Genesis 16

1Now Abram’sH87 wifeH802 SaraiH8297 had borneH3205 him noH3808 children, but she had an EgyptianH4713 maidservantH8198 namedH8034 HagarH1904. 2So SaraiH8297 saidH559 toH413 AbramH87, “LookH2009 nowH4994, the LORDH3068 has prevented meH6113 from bearingH3205 children. PleaseH4994 goH935 toH413 my maidservantH8198; perhapsH194 I can build a familyH1129 by herH4480.”

And AbramH87 listenedH8085 to the voiceH6963 of SaraiH8297. 3So afterH7093 he had livedH3427 in CanaanH776H3667 for tenH6235 yearsH8141, his wifeH802 SaraiH8297 tookH3947 her EgyptianH4713 maidservantH8198 HagarH1904 and gaveH5414 herH853 to AbramH87 to be his wifeH802. 4And he slept withH935H413 HagarH1904, and she conceivedH2029. But when Hagar realizedH7200 thatH3588 she was pregnantH2029, she began to despiseH7043H5869 her mistressH1404.1

5Then SaraiH8297 saidH559 toH413 AbramH87, “May the wrong done to meH2555 be upon youH5921! IH595 deliveredH5414 my servantH8198 into your armsH2436, and ever since she sawH7200 thatH3588 she was pregnantH2029, she has treated me with contemptH7043H5869. May the LORDH3068 judgeH8199 between you and meH996.”

6“HereH2009,” saidH559 AbramH87, “your servantH8198 is in your handsH3027. DoH6213 whatever you wantH2896 with her.” Then SaraiH8297 treatedH6031 Hagar so harshly that she fledH1272 from herH6440.

7Now the angelH43972 of the LORDH3068 foundH4672 Hagar byH5921 a springH5869 of waterH4325 in the desertH4057H5921—the springH5869 along the roadH1870 to ShurH7793. 8“HagarH1904, servantH8198 of SaraiH8297,” he saidH559, “whereH335H2088 have you come fromH935, and whereH575 are you goingH1980?”

“I amH595 running awayH1272 fromH6440 my mistressH1404 SaraiH8297,” she repliedH559.

9So the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 toldH559 her, “ReturnH7725 toH413 your mistressH1404 and submitH6031 to her authorityH8478H3027.” 10Then the angelH4397H3068 addedH559, “I will greatly multiplyH7235 your offspringH2233 so thatH3808 they will be too numerousH7230 to countH5608.”

11The angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 proceededH559:

“BeholdH2009, you have conceivedH2030 and will bearH3205 a sonH1121.And you shall name himH7121H8034 IshmaelH3458,3forH3588 the LORDH3068H413 has heardH8085 your cry of afflictionH6040.12HeH1931 will beH1961 a wild donkeyH6501 of a manH120,and his handH3027 will be against everyoneH3605,and everyone’sH3605 handH3027 against him;he will liveH7931 in hostilityH5921towardH6440 allH3605 his brothersH251.”

13So Hagar gaveH7121 this nameH8034 to the LORDH3068 who had spokenH1696 to herH413: “You areH859 the GodH410 who sees meH7210,4” forH3588 she saidH559, “HereH1988 I haveH1571 seenH7200H310 the One who sees meH7200!” 14ThereforeH5921H3651 the wellH875 was calledH7121 Beer-lahai-roiH883.5 It is locatedH2009 betweenH996 KadeshH6946H996 and BeredH1260.

15And HagarH1904 boreH3205 AbramH87 a sonH1121, and AbramH87 gaveH7121 the nameH8034 IshmaelH3458 to the sonH1121 she had borneH3205. 16AbramH87 was eighty-sixH8084H8337 yearsH8141 oldH1121H8141 when HagarH1904 boreH3205 IshmaelH3458 to himH87.
