Sarai and Hagar

1Now 1SaraiH8297, Abram’sH87 wifeH802, had not borneH3205 him aH3205 childH3205, but she had 2an EgyptianH4713 slaveH8198 womanH8198 whose nameH8034 was HagarH1904. 2So SaraiH8297 saidH559 to AbramH87, “SeeH2009 nowH4994, the LordH3068 has preventedH6113 me from bearingH3205 children. 3PleaseH4994 haveH935 relationsH935 withH935 my slaveH8198 womanH8198; perhapsH194 I will 4obtainH1129 childrenH1129 throughH4480 her.” And AbramH87 listenedH8085 to the voiceH6963 of SaraiH8297. 3And so afterH4480 AbramH87 had livedH3427 5tenH6235 yearsH8141 in the landH776 of CanaanH3667, Abram’sH87 wifeH802 SaraiH8297 tookH3947 HagarH1904 the EgyptianH4713, her slaveH8198 womanH8198, and gaveH5414 her to her husbandH376 AbramH87 as his wifeH802. 4Then he hadH935 relationsH935 withH935 HagarH1904, and she conceivedH2029; and when Hagar becameH7200 awareH7200 that she had conceivedH2029, her mistressH1404 wasH7043 insignificantH7043 in her sightH5869. 5So SaraiH8297 saidH559 to AbramH87, “6May the wrongH2555 done to me be upon you! I putH5414 my slaveH8198 womanH8198 into your 7armsH2436, but when she sawH7200 that she had conceivedH2029, I wasH7043 insignificantH7043 in her 8sightH5869. 9May the LordH3068 judgeH8199 betweenH996 10you and me.” 6But AbramH87 saidH559 to SaraiH8297, “LookH2009, your slaveH8198 womanH8198 is in your 11powerH3027; doH6213 to her whatH2896 isH2896 goodH2896 in your 12sightH5869.” So SaraiH8297 treatedH6031 her harshlyH6031, and 13she fledH1272 from her presenceH6440.

7Now 14the angelH4397 of the LordH3068 foundH4672 her by a springH5871 of waterH4325 in the wildernessH4057, by the springH5871 on the wayH1870 to 15ShurH7793. 8He saidH559, “HagarH1904, Sarai’sH8297 slaveH8198 womanH8198, 16from whereH335H2088 have you comeH935, and whereH575 are you goingH1980?” And she saidH559, “I am fleeingH1272 from the presenceH6440 of my mistressH1404 SaraiH8297.” 9So the angelH4397 of the LordH3068 saidH559 to her, “ReturnH7725 to your mistressH1404, and submitH6031 17to her authorityH3027.” 10The 18angelH4397 of the LordH3068 also saidH559 to her, “19I will greatlyH7235 multiplyH7235 your 20descendantsH2233 so that 21they will be tooH3808 manyH7230 to countH5608.” 11The angelH4397 of the LordH3068 saidH559 to her further, “BeholdH2009, you are pregnantH2030, And you will giveH3205 birthH3205 to a sonH1121; And you shall nameH7121H8034 him 22IshmaelH3458, BecauseH3588 23the LordH3068 has heardH8085 your afflictionH6040.12But he will be a 24wildH6501 donkeyH6501 of a manH120; His handH3027 will be against everyoneH3605, And everyone’sH3605 handH3027 will be against him; And he will liveH7931 2526inH5921H6440 defianceH5921H6440 of allH3605 his brothersH251.” 13Then she calledH7121 the nameH8034 of the LordH3068 who spokeH1696 to her, “27You are 28a GodH410 whoH7210 seesH7200 me”; for she saidH559, “29Have I evenH1571 seenH7200 Him hereH1988 and lived afterH310 30He sawH7210 me?” 14ThereforeH5921H3651 the wellH875 was calledH7121 31Beer-lahai-roiH883; beholdH2009, it is betweenH996 32KadeshH6946 and BeredH1260.

15So HagarH1904 boreH3205 a sonH1121 to AbramH87; and AbramH87 namedH7121H8034 his sonH1121, to whomH834 HagarH1904 gaveH3205 birthH3205, IshmaelH3458. 16AbramH87 was 33eighty-sixH8084 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when HagarH1904 boreH3205 IshmaelH3458 to 34him.
