Darby Bible

1And the PhilistinesH6430 assembled their armiesH4264 to battleH4421, and were gatheredH622 together at Sochoh, which belongs to JudahH3063, and encampedH2583 between Sochoh and AzekahH5825, in Ephesdammim. 2And SaulH7586 and the menH376 of IsraelH3478 were gatheredH622 together, and encampedH2583 in the valleyH6010 of terebinths, and set the battleH4421 in array against the PhilistinesH6430. 3And the PhilistinesH6430 stoodH5975 on the mountainH2022 on the oneH2088 side, and IsraelH3478 stoodH5975 on the mountainH2022 on the other side; and the ravine was between them. 4And there wentH3318 out a champion from the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430, namedH8034 GoliathH1555, of GathH1661, whose heightH1363 was sixH8337 cubitsH520 and a spanH2239. 5And he had a helmetH3553 of bronzeH5178 upon his headH7218, and he was clothedH3847 with a corselet of scalesH7193; and the weightH4948 of the corselet was fiveH2568 thousandH505 shekelsH8255 of bronzeH5178. 6And he had greaves of bronzeH5178 upon his legs, and a javelinH3591 of bronzeH5178 between his shouldersH3802. 7And the shaft of his spearH2595 was like a weaver's beamH4500; and his spear's head weighed sixH8337 hundredH3967 shekelsH8255 of ironH1270; and the shield-bearer wentH1980 before him. 8And he stoodH5975 and cried to the ranks of IsraelH3478, and saidH559 to them, WhyH4100 are ye comeH3318 out to setH5975 your battleH4421 in array? am not I the PhilistineH6430, and ye servantsH5650 of SaulH7586? choose for yourselves a manH376, and let him comeH3318 down to me. 9If he beH1961 ableH3201 to fightH3898 with me, and to smite me, then will we beH1961 your servantsH5650; but if I overcome and smite him, then shall ye beH1961 our servantsH5650 and serveH5647 us. 10And the PhilistineH6430 saidH559, I have defied the ranks of IsraelH3478 this dayH3117; giveH5414 me a manH376, that we may fightH3898 togetherH3162. 11And SaulH7586 and all IsraelH3478 heardH8085 these wordsH1697 of the PhilistineH6430, and they were dismayedH2865 and greatly afraidH3372. 12Now DavidH1732 was the sonH1121 of that EphrathiteH673 of Bethlehem-Judah whose nameH8034 was JesseH3448; and he had eightH8083 sonsH1121; and the manH376 was old in the daysH3117 of SaulH7586, advanced [in years] among menH376. 13And the threeH7969 eldest of the sonsH1121 of JesseH3448 had goneH1980 and followed SaulH7586 to the battleH4421; and the namesH8034 of his threeH7969 sonsH1121 that wentH1980 to the battleH4421 were EliabH446 the firstbornH1060, and the secondH4932 to him AbinadabH41, and the thirdH7992 ShammahH8048. 14And DavidH1732 was the youngestH6996; and the threeH7969 eldest had followed SaulH7586. 15But DavidH1732 wentH1980 and returnedH7725 from SaulH7586 to feedH7462 his father's sheepH6629 at Bethlehem. 16And the PhilistineH6430 drewH5066 near morning and eveningH6150, and presentedH3320 himself fortyH705 daysH3117. 17And JesseH3448 saidH559 to DavidH1732 his sonH1121, TakeH3947, I pray, for thy brethren, this ephahH374 of parched [corn] and these tenH6235 loaves, and carry them quicklyH7323 to the campH4264 to thy brethren; 18and carry these tenH6235 cheeses to the captain of the thousandH505, and visitH6485 thy brethren to see how they are, and takeH3947 a pledge of them. 19Now SaulH7586, and they, and all the menH376 of IsraelH3478 [were] in the valleyH6010 of terebinths, fightingH3898 against the PhilistinesH6430. 20And DavidH1732 roseH7925 up earlyH7925 in the morningH1242, and left the sheepH6629 with a keeperH8104, and tookH5375 his charge and wentH3318, as JesseH3448 had commandedH6680 him. And he cameH935 to the wagon-defence; and the host which was goingH3318 forthH3318 to the battle-array shoutedH7321 for the fight. 21And IsraelH3478 and the PhilistinesH6430 put the battleH4634 in array, rank against rank. 22And DavidH1732 leftH5203 the thingsH3627 he was carrying in the handH3027 of the keeperH8104 of the baggage, and ranH7323 into the ranks, and cameH935 and saluted his brethren. 23And as he talked with them, behold there cameH5927 up the champion, the PhilistineH6430 of GathH1661, GoliathH1555 by nameH8034, out of the ranks of the PhilistinesH6430, and spokeH1696 according to the same wordsH1697; and DavidH1732 heardH8085 [them]. 24And all the menH376 of IsraelH3478, when they sawH7200 the manH376, fledH5127 from him and were greatly afraidH3372. 25And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559, Have ye seenH7200 this manH376 that comes up? for to defyH2778 IsraelH3478 is he come up: and it shall beH1961, that the manH376 who smites him, him will the kingH4428 enrich with greatH1419 richesH6239, and will giveH5414 him his daughterH1323, and makeH5414 his father's houseH1004 freeH2670 in IsraelH3478. 26And DavidH1732 spoke to the menH376 that stoodH5975 by him, sayingH559, What shall be done to the manH376 that smites this PhilistineH6430, and takes awayH5493 the reproachH2781 from IsraelH3478? for who is this uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430, that he should defyH2778 the armies of the living 1GodH430? 27And the peopleH5971 told him after this mannerH1697, sayingH559, So shall it be done to the manH376 that smites him. 28And EliabH446, his eldest brotherH251, heardH8085 while he spokeH1696 to the menH376; and Eliab's angerH639 was kindled against DavidH1732, and he saidH559, WhyH4100 art thou comeH3381 down? and with whom hast thou leftH5203 those fewH4592 sheepH6629 in the wildernessH4057? I knowH3045 thy prideH2087 and the naughtiness of thy heartH3824; for thou art comeH3381 down that thou mightest seeH7200 the battleH4421. 29And DavidH1732 saidH559, What have I nowH6258 done? Was it not laid upon me? 30And he turnedH7725 from him to another, and spoke after the same mannerH1697; and the peopleH5971 answered him again after the formerH7223 mannerH1697. 31And the wordsH1697 were heardH8085 which DavidH1732 spokeH1696, and they rehearsed them before SaulH7586; and he sent for him. 32And DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, Let no man's heartH3820 fail because of him: thy servantH5650 will go and fightH3898 with this PhilistineH6430. 33And SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, Thou art not ableH3201 to go against this PhilistineH6430 to fightH3898 with him; for thou art but a youthH5271, and he a manH376 of warH4421 from his youthH5271. 34And DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, Thy servantH5650 fed his father's sheepH6629, and there cameH935 a lionH738, and also a bearH5375, and tookH5375 a lambH7716 out of the flockH6629. 35And I wentH3318 after him, and smote him, and deliveredH5337 it out of his mouthH6310; and when he aroseH6965 against me, I seized him by his beardH2206, and smote him, and slew him. 36Thy servantH5650 smote both the lionH738 and the bearH1677; and this uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430 shall beH1961 as oneH259 of them, because he has defied the armies of the living 2GodH430. 37And DavidH1732 saidH559, Jehovah who deliveredH5337 me out of the paw of the lionH738 and out of the paw of the bearH1677, he will deliverH5337 me out of the handH3027 of this PhilistineH6430. And SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, Go, and Jehovah beH1961 with thee. 38And SaulH7586 clothedH3847 DavidH1732 with his dress, and putH5414 a helmetH6959 of bronzeH5178 upon his headH7218, and clothedH3847 him with a corselet. 39And DavidH1732 girdedH2296 his swordH2719 upon his dress, and endeavoured to go; for he had not yet tried [it]. And DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, I cannot go in these; for I have never tried [them]. And DavidH1732 put them off him. 40And he tookH3947 his staffH4731 in his handH3027, and choseH977 him fiveH2568 smooth stonesH68 out of the brook, and putH7760 them in the shepherd's bag that he had, into the pocket; and his sling was in his handH3027. And he drewH5066 near to the PhilistineH6430. 41And the PhilistineH6430 cameH1980 on and approached DavidH1732; and the manH376 that boreH5375 the shieldH6793 was before him. 42And when the PhilistineH6430 lookedH7200 about and sawH7200 DavidH1732, he disdained him; for he wasH1961 a youthH5288, and ruddy, and besides of a beautifulH3303 countenance. 43And the PhilistineH6430 saidH559 to DavidH1732, Am I a dogH3611, that thou comest to me with staves? And the PhilistineH6430 cursedH7043 DavidH1732 by his 3godsH430. 44And the PhilistineH6430 saidH559 to DavidH1732, Come to me, and I will giveH5414 thy fleshH1320 to the fowls of the heavensH8064 and to the beasts of the fieldH7704. 45And DavidH1732 saidH559 to the PhilistineH6430, Thou comest to me with swordH2719, and with spearH2595, and with javelinH3591; but I comeH935 to thee in the nameH8034 of Jehovah of hostsH6635, the 4GodH430 of the armiesH6635 of IsraelH3478, whom thou hast defied. 46This dayH3117 will Jehovah deliver thee up into my handH3027; and I will smite thee, and take thy headH7218 from thee; and I will giveH5414 the carcases of the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 this dayH3117 to the fowl of the heavensH8064 and to the wild beasts of the earthH776. And all the earthH776 shall knowH3045 that IsraelH3478 has a 5GodH430; 47and all this congregation shall knowH3045 that Jehovah savesH3467 not with swordH2719 and spearH2595; for the battleH4421 is Jehovah's, and he will giveH5414 you into our handsH3027. 48And it came to pass, when the PhilistineH6430 aroseH6965, and came and advanced to meetH7122 DavidH1732, that DavidH1732 hasted, and ranH7323 towards the ranks to meetH7122 the PhilistineH6430. 49And DavidH1732 put his handH3027 into the bag, and tookH3947 thence a stoneH68, and slang it, and smote the PhilistineH6430 in his foreheadH4696, and the stoneH68 sank into his foreheadH4696; and he fellH5307 on his faceH6440 to the earthH776. 50So DavidH1732 overcame the PhilistineH6430 with a sling and a stoneH68, and smote the PhilistineH6430 and killed him; and there was no swordH2719 in the handH3027 of DavidH1732. 51And DavidH1732 ranH7323, and stoodH5975 upon the PhilistineH6430, and tookH3947 his swordH2719, and drewH8025 it out of its sheathH8593, and killedH4191 him completely, and cutH3772 off his headH7218 with it. And when the PhilistinesH6430 sawH7200 that their hero was deadH4191, they fledH5127. 52And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 and of JudahH3063 aroseH6965, and shoutedH7321, and pursuedH7291 the PhilistinesH6430, until thou comest to the ravine and to the gatesH8179 of EkronH6138. And the woundedH2491 of the PhilistinesH6430 fellH5307 downH5307 on the wayH1870 to ShaaraimH8189, even to GathH1661, and to EkronH6138. 53And the children of IsraelH3478 returnedH7725 from chasing after the PhilistinesH6430, and they pillaged their campsH4264. 54And DavidH1732 tookH3947 the headH7218 of the PhilistineH6430 and broughtH935 it to JerusalemH3389; but he putH7760 his armour in his tentH168. 55And when SaulH7586 sawH7200 DavidH1732 goH3318 forthH3318 against the PhilistineH6430, he saidH559 to AbnerH74, the captain of the hostH6635, AbnerH74, whose sonH1121 is this youngH5288 manH5288? And AbnerH74 saidH559, As thy soulH5315 liveth, O kingH4428, I cannot tell. 56And the kingH4428 saidH559, Inquire thou whose sonH1121 this youth is. 57And as DavidH1732 returnedH7725 from the slaughter of the PhilistineH6430, AbnerH74 tookH3947 him, and broughtH935 him before SaulH7586 with the headH7218 of the PhilistineH6430 in his handH3027. 58And SaulH7586 saidH559 to him, Whose sonH1121 art thou, youngH5288 manH5288? And DavidH1732 saidH559, I am the sonH1121 of thy servantH5650 JesseH3448 the Beth-lehemite.
