1And SamuelH8050 saidH559 to SaulH7586, Jehovah sentH7971 me to anointH4886 thee kingH4428 over his peopleH5971, over IsraelH3478: nowH6258 thereforeH6258 hearken to the voiceH6963 of the wordsH1697 of Jehovah. 2ThusH3541 saith Jehovah of hostsH6635: I have considered what AmalekH6002 did to IsraelH3478, how he setH7760 himself against him in the wayH1870, whenH834 he cameH5927 up from EgyptH4714. 3NowH6258 go and smite AmalekH6002, and destroyH2763 utterly all that they have, and spareH2550 them not, but slay both manH376 and womanH802, infant and suckling, oxH7794 and sheepH7716, camelH1581 and ass. 4And SaulH7586 summoned the peopleH5971, and numbered them in Telaim, twoH3967 hundredH3967 thousandH505 footmen, and tenH6235 thousandH505 menH376 of JudahH3063. 5And SaulH7586 cameH935 to the cityH5892 of the Amalekites, and set an ambush in the valley. 6And SaulH7586 saidH559 to the Kenites, GoH5927, departH5493, and goH5927 down from among the Amalekites, lestH6435 I destroy you with them; for ye shewed kindness to all the children of IsraelH3478 when they cameH5927 up out of EgyptH4714. And the Kenites departedH5493 from among the Amalekites. 7And SaulH7586 smote AmalekH6002 from HavilahH2341 as thou comest to ShurH7793, which is opposite to EgyptH4714. 8And he took AgagH90 the kingH4428 of AmalekH6002 aliveH2416, and utterly destroyed all the peopleH5971 with the edge of the swordH2719. 9And SaulH7586 and the peopleH5971 sparedH2550 AgagH90, and the best of the sheepH6629 and oxenH1241, and beasts of the secondH4932 bearing, and the lambsH3733, and all that was goodH2896, and wouldH14 not devote them to destruction; but everythingH3605 that was mean and weak, that they destroyed utterly. 10And the wordH1697 of Jehovah came to SamuelH8050, sayingH559, 11It repenteth me that I have setH6965 up SaulH7586 to be kingH4428; for he is turnedH7725 awayH7725 from following me, and hath not fulfilled my wordsH1697. And SamuelH8050 was much grieved; and he criedH2199 to Jehovah all nightH3915. 12And SamuelH8050 roseH7925 earlyH7925 to meetH7122 SaulH7586 in the morningH1242. And it was toldH5046 SamuelH8050, sayingH559, SaulH7586 cameH935 to CarmelH3760, and behold, he setH5324 him up a monument, and has turnedH5437 about, and passedH5674 on, and goneH3381 downH3381 to GilgalH1537. 13And SamuelH8050 cameH935 to SaulH7586; and SaulH7586 saidH559 to him, BlessedH1288 art thou of Jehovah: I have fulfilled the wordH1697 of Jehovah. 14And SamuelH8050 saidH559, What [means] then this bleating of sheepH6629 in mine earsH241, and the lowing of oxenH1241 which I hearH8085? 15And SaulH7586 saidH559, They have broughtH935 them from the Amalekites, because the peopleH5971 sparedH2550 the best of the sheepH6629 and of the oxenH1241, to sacrificeH2076 to Jehovah thy 1GodH430; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. 16And SamuelH8050 saidH559 to SaulH7586, Stay, that I may tellH5046 thee what Jehovah has saidH559 to me this nightH3915. And he saidH559 to him, SayH559 on. 17And SamuelH8050 saidH559, Was it not when thou wast littleH6996 in thine eyesH5869 that thou [becamest] the headH7218 of the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478, and Jehovah anointedH4886 thee kingH4428 over IsraelH3478? 18And Jehovah sentH7971 thee on a wayH1870 and saidH559, GoH7971 and utterly destroyH3615 the sinnersH2400 the Amalekites, and fightH3898 against them until they be consumed. 19WhyH4100 then didst thou not hearken to the voiceH6963 of Jehovah, but didst fall upon the spoilH7998, and didst evilH7451 in the sight of Jehovah? 20And SaulH7586 saidH559 to SamuelH8050, I have indeed hearkened to the voiceH6963 of Jehovah, and have goneH935 the wayH1870 which Jehovah sentH7971 me, and have broughtH935 AgagH90 the kingH4428 of AmalekH6002, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21But the peopleH5971 tookH3947 of the spoilH7998, sheepH6629 and oxenH1241, the choicest of the devoted things, to sacrificeH2076 to Jehovah thy 2GodH430 in GilgalH1537. 22And SamuelH8050 saidH559, Has Jehovah delightH2656 in burnt-offerings and sacrificesH2077, As in hearkening to the voiceH6963 of Jehovah? Behold, obedience is betterH2896 than sacrificeH2077, AttentionH7181 than the fatH2459 of ramsH352. 23For rebellionH4805 is [as] the sinH2403 of divinationH7081, And selfwill is [as] iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejectedH3988 the wordH1697 of Jehovah, He hath also rejectedH3988 thee from being kingH4428. 24And SaulH7586 saidH559 to SamuelH8050, I have sinnedH2398, for I have transgressed the commandment of Jehovah, and thy wordsH1697; for I fearedH3372 the peopleH5971, and hearkened to their voiceH6963. 25And nowH6258, I pray thee, forgiveH5375 my sinH2403, and turnH7725 again with me, that I may worship Jehovah. 26And SamuelH8050 saidH559 to SaulH7586, I will not turnH7725 again with thee; for thou hast rejectedH3988 the wordH1697 of Jehovah, and Jehovah has rejectedH3988 thee from being kingH4428 over IsraelH3478. 27And as SamuelH8050 turnedH5437 to goH5437 awayH5437, [Saul] laid holdH2388 upon the skirtH3671 of his mantle, and it rent. 28Then SamuelH8050 saidH559 to him, Jehovah has rent the kingdomH4468 of IsraelH3478 from thee to-day, and has givenH5414 it to thy neighbour, who is betterH2896 than thou. 29And alsoH1571 the Hope of IsraelH3478 will not lie nor repentH5162; for he is not a manH120, that he should repentH5162. 30And he saidH559, I have sinnedH2398; honour me nowH6258, I pray thee, before the eldersH2205 of my peopleH5971, and before IsraelH3478, and turnH7725 again with me, that I may worship Jehovah thy 3GodH430. 31So SamuelH8050 turnedH7725 again after SaulH7586; and SaulH7586 worshipped Jehovah. 32And SamuelH8050 saidH559, BringH5066 ye near to me AgagH90 the kingH4428 of AmalekH6002. And AgagH90 came to him gaily. And AgagH90 saidH559, Surely the bitternessH4751 of deathH4194 is past. 33And SamuelH8050 saidH559, As thy swordH2719 has madeH7921 womenH802 childlessH7921, soH3651 shall thy motherH517 be childlessH7921 above womenH802. And SamuelH8050 hewed AgagH90 in pieces before Jehovah in GilgalH1537. 34And SamuelH8050 wentH5927 to RamahH7414; and SaulH7586 wentH5927 up to his houseH1004 to GibeahH1390 of SaulH7586. 35And SamuelH8050 sawH7200 SaulH7586 no more until the dayH3117 of his deathH4194; for SamuelH8050 mournedH56 over SaulH7586; and Jehovah repentedH5162 that he had made SaulH7586 kingH4427 over IsraelH3478.
