1 Samuel 17

1Now the PhilistinesH6430 gatheredH622 together their armiesH4264 to battleH4421; and they were gatheredH622 together at SocohH7755, which belongeth to JudahH3063, and encampedH2583 between SocohH7755 and AzekahH5825, in Ephes-dammim. 2And SaulH7586 and the menH376 of IsraelH3478 were gatheredH622 together, and encampedH2583 in the vale of ElahH425, and set the battleH4421 in array against the PhilistinesH6430. 3And the PhilistinesH6430 stoodH5975 on the mountainH2022 on the oneH2088 side, and IsraelH3478 stoodH5975 on the mountainH2022 on the other side: and there was a valleyH1516 between them. 4And there wentH3318 out a champion out of the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430, namedH8034 GoliathH1555, of GathH1661, whose heightH1363 was sixH8337 cubitsH520 and a spanH2239. 5And he had a helmetH3553 of brass upon his headH7218, and he was clad with a coat of mail; and the weightH4948 of the coat was fiveH2568 thousandH505 shekelsH8255 of brass. 6And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a javelinH3591 of brass between his shouldersH3802. 7And the staff of his spearH2595 was like a weaver’sH707 beamH4500; and his spear’s head weighed sixH8337 hundredH3967 shekelsH8255 of ironH1270: and his shield-bearer wentH1980 before him. 8And he stoodH5975 and cried unto the armies of IsraelH3478, and saidH559 unto them, WhyH4100 are ye comeH3318 out to setH5975 your battleH4421 in array? am not I a PhilistineH6430, and ye servantsH5650 to SaulH7586? choose you a manH376 for you, and let him comeH3318 down to me. 9If he beH1961 ableH3201 to fightH3898 with me, and kill me, then will we beH1961 your servantsH5650; but if I prevailH3201 against him, and kill him, then shall ye beH1961 our servantsH5650, and serveH5647 us. 10And the PhilistineH6430 saidH559, I defyH2778 the armies of IsraelH3478 this dayH3117; giveH5414 me a manH376, that we may fightH3898 togetherH3162. 11And when SaulH7586 and all IsraelH3478 heardH8085 those wordsH1697 of the PhilistineH6430, they were dismayedH2865, and greatly afraidH3372.

12Now DavidH1732 was the sonH1121 of that EphrathiteH673 of Beth-lehem-judah, whose nameH8034 was JesseH3448; and he had eightH8083 sonsH1121: and the manH376 was an old manH376 in the daysH3117 of SaulH7586, stricken in years among menH376. 13And the threeH7969 eldest sonsH1121 of JesseH3448 had goneH1980 after SaulH7586 to the battleH4421: and the namesH8034 of his threeH7969 sonsH1121 that wentH1980 to the battleH4421 were EliabH446 the first-born, and next unto him AbinadabH41, and the thirdH7992 ShammahH8048. 14And DavidH1732 was the youngestH6996; and the threeH7969 eldest followed SaulH7586. 15Now DavidH1732 wentH1980 to and fro from SaulH7586 to feedH7462 his father’sH1 sheepH6629 at Beth-lehem. 16And the PhilistineH6430 drewH5066 near morning and eveningH6150, and presentedH3320 himself fortyH705 daysH3117.

17And JesseH3448 saidH559 unto DavidH1732 his sonH1121, TakeH3947 now for thy brethren an ephahH374 of this parched grainH7039, and these tenH6235 loaves, and carry them quicklyH7323 to the campH4264 to thy brethren; 18and bringH935 these tenH6235 cheeses unto the captain of their thousandH505, and look how thy brethren fare, and takeH3947 their pledge. 19Now SaulH7586, and they, and all the menH376 of IsraelH3478, were in the vale of ElahH425, fightingH3898 with the PhilistinesH6430. 20And DavidH1732 roseH7925 up earlyH7925 in the morningH1242, and left the sheepH6629 with a keeperH8104, and tookH5375, and wentH3318, as JesseH3448 had commandedH6680 him; and he cameH935 to the place of the wagons, as the host which was goingH3318 forthH3318 to the fight shoutedH7321 for the battleH4421. 21And IsraelH3478 and the PhilistinesH6430 put the battleH4634 in array, army against army. 22And DavidH1732 leftH5203 his baggage in the handH3027 of the keeperH8104 of the baggage, and ranH7323 to the army, and cameH935 and saluted his brethren. 23And as he talked with them, behold, there cameH5927 up the champion, the PhilistineH6430 of GathH1661, GoliathH1555 by nameH8034, out of the ranks of the PhilistinesH6430, and spake according to the same wordsH1697: and DavidH1732 heardH8085 them. 24And all the menH376 of IsraelH3478, when they sawH7200 the manH376, fledH5127 from him, and were sore afraidH3372. 25And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559, Have ye seenH7200 this manH376 that is come up? surely to defyH2778 IsraelH3478 is he come up: and it shall beH1961, that the manH376 who killeth him, the kingH4428 will enrich him with greatH1419 richesH6239, and will giveH5414 him his daughterH1323, and makeH5414 his father’sH1 houseH1004 freeH2670 in IsraelH3478. 26And DavidH1732 spake to the menH376 that stoodH5975 by him, sayingH559, What shall be done to the manH376 that killeth this PhilistineH6430, and taketh awayH5493 the reproachH2781 from IsraelH3478? for who is this uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430, that he should defyH2778 the armies of the living GodH430? 27And the peopleH5971 answered him after this mannerH1697, sayingH559, So shall it be done to the manH376 that killeth him.

28And EliabH446 his eldest brotherH251 heardH8085 when he spake unto the menH376; and Eliab’s angerH639 was kindled against DavidH1732, and he saidH559, WhyH4100 art thou comeH3381 down? and with whom hast thou leftH5203 those fewH4592 sheepH6629 in the wildernessH4057? I knowH3045 thy prideH2087, and the naughtiness of thy heartH3824; for thou art comeH3381 down that thou mightest seeH7200 the battleH4421. 29And DavidH1732 saidH559, What have I nowH6258 done? Is there not a cause? 30And he turnedH7725 awayH7725 from him toward another, and spake after the same mannerH1697: and the peopleH5971 answered him again after the formerH7223 mannerH1697.

31And whenH834 the wordsH1697 were heardH8085 which DavidH1732 spake, they rehearsed them before SaulH7586; and he sent for him. 32And DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, Let no man’sH120 heartH3820 fail because of him; thy servantH5650 will go and fightH3898 with this PhilistineH6430. 33And SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, Thou art not ableH3201 to go against this PhilistineH6430 to fightH3898 with him; for thou art but a youthH5271, and he a manH376 of warH4421 from his youthH5271. 34And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto SaulH7586, Thy servantH5650 wasH1961 keeping his father’sH1 sheepH6629; and when there cameH935 a lionH738, or a bearH5375, and tookH5375 a lambH7716 out of the flockH6629, 35I wentH3318 out after him, and smote him, and deliveredH5337 it out of his mouthH6310; and when he aroseH6965 against me, I caught him by his beardH2206, and smote him, and slew him. 36Thy servantH5650 smote both the lionH738 and the bearH1677: and this uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430 shall beH1961 as oneH259 of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living GodH430. 37And DavidH1732 saidH559, Jehovah that deliveredH5337 me out of the paw of the lionH738, and out of the paw of the bearH1677, he will deliverH5337 me out of the handH3027 of this PhilistineH6430. And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto DavidH1732, Go, and Jehovah shall beH1961 with thee. 38And SaulH7586 clad DavidH1732 with his apparel, and he putH5414 a helmetH6959 of brass upon his headH7218, and he clad him with a coat of mail. 39And DavidH1732 girdedH2296 his swordH2719 upon his apparel, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto SaulH7586, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And DavidH1732 put them off him. 40And he tookH3947 his staffH4731 in his handH3027, and choseH977 him fiveH2568 smooth stonesH68 out of the brook, and putH7760 them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, even in his wallet; and his sling was in his handH3027: and he drewH5066 near to the PhilistineH6430.

41And the PhilistineH6430 cameH1980 on and drew near unto DavidH1732; and the manH376 that bare the shieldH6793 wentH1980 before him. 42And when the PhilistineH6430 lookedH7200 about, and sawH7200 DavidH1732, he disdained him; for he wasH1961 but a youthH5288, and ruddy, and withal of a fair countenance. 43And the PhilistineH6430 saidH559 unto DavidH1732, Am I a dogH3611, that thou comest to me with staves? And the PhilistineH6430 cursedH7043 DavidH1732 by his godsH430. 44And the PhilistineH6430 saidH559 to DavidH1732, Come to me, and I will giveH5414 thy fleshH1320 unto the birdsH5775 of the heavensH8064, and to the beasts of the fieldH7704. 45Then saidH559 DavidH1732 to the PhilistineH6430, Thou comest to me with a swordH2719, and with a spearH2595, and with a javelinH3591: but I comeH935 to thee in the nameH8034 of Jehovah of hostsH6635, the GodH430 of the armiesH6635 of IsraelH3478, whom thou hast defied. 46This dayH3117 will Jehovah deliver thee into my handH3027; and I will smite thee, and take thy headH7218 from off thee; and I will giveH5414 the dead bodies of the host of the PhilistinesH6430 this dayH3117 unto the birdsH5775 of the heavensH8064, and to the wild beasts of the earthH776; that all the earthH776 may knowH3045 that there is a GodH430 in IsraelH3478, 47and that all this assemblyH6951 may knowH3045 that Jehovah saveth not with swordH2719 and spearH2595: for the battleH4421 is Jehovah’s, and he will giveH5414 you into our handH3027. 48And it came to pass, when the PhilistineH6430 aroseH6965, and came and drewH7126 nigh to meetH7122 DavidH1732, that DavidH1732 hastenedH4116, and ranH7323 toward the army to meetH7122 the PhilistineH6430. 49And DavidH1732 put his handH3027 in his bag, and tookH3947 thence a stoneH68, and slang it, and smote the PhilistineH6430 in his foreheadH4696; and the stoneH68 sank into his foreheadH4696, and he fellH5307 upon his faceH6440 to the earthH776.

50So DavidH1732 prevailedH2388 over the PhilistineH6430 with a sling and with a stoneH68, and smote the PhilistineH6430, and slew him; but there was no swordH2719 in the handH3027 of DavidH1732. 51Then DavidH1732 ranH7323, and stoodH5975 over the PhilistineH6430, and tookH3947 his swordH2719, and drewH8025 it out of the sheathH8593 thereof, and slew him, and cutH3772 off his headH7218 therewith. And when the PhilistinesH6430 sawH7200 that their champion was deadH4191, they fledH5127. 52And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 and of JudahH3063 aroseH6965, and shoutedH7321, and pursuedH7291 the PhilistinesH6430, until thou comest to Gai, and to the gatesH8179 of EkronH6138. And the woundedH2491 of the PhilistinesH6430 fellH5307 downH5307 by the wayH1870 to ShaaraimH8189, even unto GathH1661, and unto EkronH6138. 53And the children of IsraelH3478 returnedH7725 from chasing after the PhilistinesH6430, and they plunderedH8155 their campH4264. 54And DavidH1732 tookH3947 the headH7218 of the PhilistineH6430, and broughtH935 it to JerusalemH3389; but he putH7760 his armorH3627 in his tentH168.

55And when SaulH7586 sawH7200 DavidH1732 goH3318 forthH3318 against the PhilistineH6430, he saidH559 unto AbnerH74, the captain of the hostH6635, AbnerH74, whose sonH1121 is this youthH5288? And AbnerH74 saidH559, As thy soulH5315 liveth, O kingH4428, I cannot tell. 56And the kingH4428 saidH559, Inquire thou whose sonH1121 the stripling is. 57And as DavidH1732 returnedH7725 from the slaughter of the PhilistineH6430, AbnerH74 tookH3947 him, and broughtH935 him before SaulH7586 with the headH7218 of the PhilistineH6430 in his handH3027. 58And SaulH7586 saidH559 to him, Whose sonH1121 art thou, thou youngH5288 manH5288? And DavidH1732 answered, I am the sonH1121 of thy servantH5650 JesseH3448 the Beth-lehemite.
