1 Samuel 14
Darby Bible
1Now it came to passH5674 one dayH3117 that JonathanH3129 the sonH1121 of SaulH7586 saidH559 to the youngH5288 manH5288 that boreH5375 his armour, Come and let us go over to the Philistines' garrisonH4673 which is on the otherH5676 sideH5676. But he did not tellH5046 his fatherH1. 2And SaulH7586 abode at the extreme endH7097 of GibeahH1390 under the pomegranate-tree which [was] in MigronH4051; and the peopleH5971 that were with him were about sixH8337 hundredH3967 menH376. 3(And AhijahH281 the sonH1121 of AhitubH285, Ichabod's brotherH251, the sonH1121 of PhinehasH6372, the sonH1121 of EliH5941, Jehovah's priestH3548 in ShilohH7887, wore the ephodH646.) And the peopleH5971 did not knowH3045 that JonathanH3129 was goneH1980. 4Now between the passesH5674 by which JonathanH3129 soughtH1245 to go over to the Philistines' garrisonH4673 there was a sharp rockH5553 on the oneH259 sideH5676 and a sharp rockH5553 on the other sideH5676; and the nameH8034 of the oneH259 [was] Bozez, and the nameH8034 of the other Seneh. 5The oneH259 crag [formed] a pillar on the northH6828 oppositeH4136 to Michmash, and the other on the southH5045 oppositeH4136 to GebaH1387. 6And JonathanH3083 saidH559 to the youngH5288 manH5288 that boreH5375 his armour, Come, and let us go over to the garrisonH4673 of these uncircumcisedH6189: perhapsH194 Jehovah will work for us; for there is no restraint to Jehovah to saveH3467 by manyH7227 or by fewH4592. 7And his armour-bearer saidH559 to him, Do all that is in thy heartH3824; turnH5186 thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heartH3824. 8Then saidH559 JonathanH3083, Behold, we will passH5674 over to the menH376, and we will shew ourselves to them. 9If they sayH559 thusH3541 to us, StandH5975 stillH5975 until we comeH5927 to you, then we will stay in our placeH8478, and will not goH5927 up to them. 10And if they sayH559 thusH3541, ComeH5927 up to us, then we will goH5927 up; for Jehovah has givenH5414 them into our handH3027; and this shall be the signH226 to us. 11And both of them shewed themselves to the garrisonH4673 of the PhilistinesH6430; and the PhilistinesH6430 saidH559, Behold, the HebrewsH5680 comeH3318 forthH3318 out of the holesH2356 whereH834 they had hidH2244 themselves. 12And the menH376 of the garrison answered JonathanH3129 and his armour-bearer and saidH559, ComeH5927 up to us, and we will shew you something. And JonathanH3129 saidH559 to his armour-bearer, ComeH5927 up after me; for Jehovah has delivered them into the handH3027 of IsraelH3478. 13And JonathanH3129 climbed up upon his handsH3027 and upon his feetH7272, and his armour-bearer after him; and they fellH5307 before JonathanH3129; and his armour-bearer slew after him. 14And that firstH7223 slaughterH4347 which JonathanH3129 and his armour-bearer wrought wasH1961 about twentyH6242 menH376, as it were on the half-furrow of an acre of landH7704. 15And there wasH1961 tremblingH2729 in the campH4264, in the fieldH7704, and among all the peopleH5971; the garrisonH4673, and the ravagers, they alsoH1571 trembledH7264, and the earthH776 quakedH7264; for it wasH1961 a tremblingH2729 [from] 1GodH430. 16And the watchmenH6822 of SaulH7586 in GibeahH1390 of BenjaminH1144 lookedH7200, and behold, the multitudeH1995 meltedH4127 awayH4127, and they went on slaying oneH7200 another. 17Then saidH559 SaulH7586 to the peopleH5971 that were with him, Muster now, and seeH7200 who is goneH1980 from us. And they musteredH6485, and behold, JonathanH3129 and his armour-bearer were not there. 18And SaulH7586 saidH559 to AhijahH281, BringH5066 hither the arkH727 of 2GodH430. For the arkH727 of 3GodH430 wasH1961 at that time with the children of IsraelH3478. 19And it came to pass while SaulH7586 talked to the priestH3548, that the noiseH1995 which wasH1961 in the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 wentH1980 on and increased; and SaulH7586 saidH559 to the priestH3548, WithdrawH622 thy handH3027. 20And SaulH7586 and all the peopleH5971 that were with him were calledH2199 togetherH2199, and they cameH935 to the battleH4421; and behold, every man's swordH2719 wasH1961 against his fellow, a veryH3966 greatH1419 confusionH4103. 21And there were HebrewsH5680 with the PhilistinesH6430 before that time, who had goneH5927 up with them into the campH4264 roundH5439 about; and they alsoH1571 [turned] to beH1961 with the Israelites who were with SaulH7586 and JonathanH3129. 22And all the menH376 of IsraelH3478 who had hidH2244 themselves in mount EphraimH669 heardH8085 that the PhilistinesH6430 fledH5127, and they alsoH1571 followed hard after them in the battleH4421. 23And Jehovah savedH3467 IsraelH3478 that dayH3117; and the battleH4421 passedH5674 over beyond Beth-Aven. 24But the menH376 of IsraelH3478 were distressed that dayH3117. Now SaulH7586 had adjured the peopleH5971, sayingH559, CursedH779 be the manH376 that eateth foodH3899 until eveningH6153, and [until] I am avengedH5358 on mine enemiesH341. So none of the peopleH5971 tastedH2938 foodH3899. 25And all they of the landH776 cameH935 to a wood; and there wasH1961 honeyH1706 on the groundH776. 26And the peopleH5971 had comeH935 into the wood, and behold, the honeyH1706 flowed; but no man put his handH3027 to his mouthH6310, for the peopleH5971 fearedH3372 the oathH7621. 27But JonathanH3129 had not heardH8085 whenH834 his fatherH1 adjured the peopleH5971; and he put forthH7971 the endH7097 of his staffH4294 which was in his handH3027, and dippedH2881 it in the honeycomb, and put his handH3027 to his mouthH6310, and his eyesH5869 became bright. 28Then answered oneH376 of the peopleH5971 and saidH559, Thy fatherH1 strictly adjured the peopleH5971, sayingH559, CursedH779 be the manH376 that eateth foodH3899 this dayH3117; and the peopleH5971 are faint. 29And JonathanH3129 saidH559, My fatherH1 has troubledH5916 the landH776: seeH7200, I pray you, that mine eyesH5869 are bright, because I tastedH2938 a littleH4592 of this honeyH1706. 30How muchH7235 more, if the peopleH5971 had eatenH398 freely to-day of the spoilH7998 of their enemiesH341 which they foundH4672? for would there not nowH6258 have been a muchH7235 greaterH7235 slaughterH4347 among the PhilistinesH6430? 31And they smote the PhilistinesH6430 that dayH3117 from Michmash to Ajalon; and the peopleH5971 were veryH3966 faint. 32And the peopleH5971 fell on the spoilH7998, and tookH3947 sheepH6629, and oxenH1241, and calves, and slaughteredH7819 them on the groundH776; and the peopleH5971 ateH398 [them] with the bloodH1818. 33And they toldH5046 SaulH7586, sayingH559, Behold, the peopleH5971 sinH2398 against Jehovah, in that they eatH398 with the bloodH1818. And he saidH559, Ye have actedH898 perversely: rollH1556 me now a greatH1419 stoneH68. 34And SaulH7586 saidH559, Disperse yourselves among the peopleH5971, and sayH559 to them, BringH5066 near to me every manH376 his oxH7794, and every manH376 his sheepH7716, and slaughterH7819 them hereH2088, and eatH398; and sinH2398 not against Jehovah in eatingH398 with the bloodH1818. And all the peopleH5971 broughtH5066 every manH376 his oxH7794 with him that nightH3915, and slaughteredH7819 [them] there. 35And SaulH7586 builtH1129 an altarH4196 to Jehovah: this was the first altarH4196 he builtH1129 to Jehovah. 36And SaulH7586 saidH559, Let us goH3381 down after the PhilistinesH6430 by nightH3915, and plunderH962 them until the morningH1242 lightH216, and let us not leaveH7604 a manH376 of them. And they saidH559, Do whatsoever is goodH2896 in thy sight. Then saidH559 the priestH3548, Let us comeH3381 near hither to 4GodH430. 37And SaulH7586 inquired of 5GodH430, Shall I goH3381 down after the PhilistinesH6430? wilt thou giveH5414 them into the handH3027 of IsraelH3478? But he did not answerH6030 him that dayH3117. 38And SaulH7586 saidH559, DrawH5066 ye near hither, all the heads of the peopleH5971; and knowH3045 and seeH7200 wherein this sinH2403 has beenH1961 this dayH3117. 39For, [as] Jehovah liveth, who has savedH3467 IsraelH3478, though it be in JonathanH3129 my sonH1121, he shall certainly dieH4191. And no one answeredH6030 him among all the peopleH5971. 40Then saidH559 he to all IsraelH3478, BeH1961 ye on oneH259 sideH5676, and I and JonathanH3129 my sonH1121 will beH1961 on the other sideH5676. And the peopleH5971 saidH559 to SaulH7586, Do what is goodH2896 in thy sight. 41And SaulH7586 saidH559 to Jehovah the 6GodH430 of IsraelH3478, GiveH3051 a perfectH8549 [testimony]! And JonathanH3129 and SaulH7586 were takenH3920, and the peopleH5971 escaped. 42And SaulH7586 saidH559, CastH5307 [lots] between me and JonathanH3129 my sonH1121. And JonathanH3129 was takenH3920. 43And SaulH7586 saidH559 to JonathanH3129, TellH5046 me what thou hast done. And JonathanH3129 toldH5046 him and saidH559, With the endH7097 of the staffH4294 which is in my handH3027 I tastedH2938 a littleH4592 honeyH1706, [and] behold, I must dieH4191! 44And SaulH7586 saidH559, 7GodH430 do so [to me] and more also; thou shalt certainly dieH4191, JonathanH3129. 45And the peopleH5971 saidH559 to SaulH7586, Shall JonathanH3129 dieH4191, who has wrought this greatH1419 salvationH3444 in IsraelH3478? FarH2486 be it! [as] Jehovah liveth, there shall not a hairH8185 of his headH7218 fallH5307 to the groundH776; for he has wrought with 8GodH430 this dayH3117. So the peopleH5971 delivered JonathanH3129, that he diedH4191 not. 46And SaulH7586 wentH1980 up from following the PhilistinesH6430; and the PhilistinesH6430 wentH1980 to their own placeH4725. 47And SaulH7586 tookH3920 the kingdom over IsraelH3478, and foughtH3898 against all his enemiesH341 roundH5439 about, against MoabH4124, and against the children of AmmonH5983, and against EdomH123, and against the kingsH4428 of ZobahH6678, and against the PhilistinesH6430; and whithersoever he turnedH6437 himself, he discomfited [them]. 48And he did valiantly, and smote the Amalekites, and deliveredH5337 IsraelH3478 out of the handsH3027 of their spoilers. 49And the sonsH1121 of SaulH7586 wereH1961 JonathanH3129, and Jishvi, and Malchi-shuaH4444. And the namesH8034 of his twoH8147 daughtersH1323: the nameH8034 of the firstbornH1067 MerabH4764, and the nameH8034 of the youngerH6996 MichalH4324. 50And the nameH8034 of Saul's wifeH802 was AhinoamH293, the daughterH1323 of AhimaazH290; and the nameH8034 of the captain of his hostH6635 was AbnerH74, the sonH1121 of NerH5369, Saul's uncleH1730. 51And KishH7027 the fatherH1 of SaulH7586, and NerH5369 the fatherH1 of AbnerH74 were sonsH1121 of AbielH22. 52And there wasH1961 sore warH4421 against the PhilistinesH6430 all the daysH3117 of SaulH7586; and when SaulH7586 sawH7200 any mightyH1368 manH376, or any valiant manH376, he took him to himself.
