Goliath’s Challenge
1Now 1the PhilistinesH6430 gatheredH622 their armiesH4264 for battleH4421; and they were gatheredH622 at SocohH7755 whichH834 belongs to JudahH3063, and they campedH2583 betweenH996 2SocohH7755 and 3AzekahH5825, in 4Ephes-dammimH658. 2SaulH7586 and the menH376 of IsraelH3478 were gatheredH622 and campedH2583 in 5the valleyH6010 of ElahH424, and drewH6186 up in battleH4421 array to encounterH7122 the PhilistinesH6430. 3The PhilistinesH6430 stoodH5975 on the mountainH2022 on oneH2088 sideH2088 while IsraelH3478 stoodH5975 on the mountainH2022 on the otherH2088 sideH2088, with the valleyH1516 betweenH996 them. 4Then a championH376H996 cameH3318 out from the armiesH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 namedH8034 6GoliathH1555, from 7GathH1661, whose heightH1363 was sixH8337 8cubitsH520 and a spanH2239. 5He had a bronzeH5178 helmetH3553 on his headH7218, and he was clothedH3847 with scale-armorH7193 9which weighedH4948 fiveH2568 thousandH505 shekelsH8255 of bronzeH5178. 6He also had bronzeH5178 10greavesH4697 on his legsH7272 and a 11bronzeH5178 javelinH3591 slung betweenH996 his shouldersH3802. 712The shaftH2671 of his spearH2595 was like a weaver’sH707 beamH4500, and the headH3852 of his spearH2595 weighed sixH8337 hundredH3967 shekelsH8255 of ironH1270; 13his shield-carrierH6793H5375 also walkedH1980 beforeH6440 him. 8He stoodH5975 and shoutedH7121 to the ranksH4634 of IsraelH3478 and saidH559 to them, “WhyH4100 do you comeH3318 out to drawH6186 up in battleH4421 array? Am I not the PhilistineH6430 and you 14servantsH5650 of SaulH7586? ChooseH1262 a manH376 for yourselves and let him comeH3381 downH3381 to me. 915IfH518 he is ableH3201 to fightH3898 with me and 16killH5221 me, then we will becomeH1961 your servantsH5650; but ifH518 I prevailH3201 against him and 17killH5221 him, then you shall becomeH1961 our servantsH5650 and serveH5647 us.” 10Again the PhilistineH6430 saidH559, “18I defyH2778 the ranksH4634 of IsraelH3478 thisH2088 dayH3117; giveH5414 me a manH376 that we may fightH3898 togetherH3162.” 11When SaulH7586 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 heardH8085 theseH428 wordsH1697 of the PhilistineH6430, they were dismayedH2865 and greatlyH3966 afraidH3372.
12Now DavidH1732 was 19the sonH1121 of 20the 21EphrathiteH673 of BethlehemH1035 in JudahH3063, whose nameH8034 was JesseH3448, and 22he had eightH8083 sonsH1121. And 23Jesse was oldH2204 in the daysH3117 of SaulH7586, advancedH935 in years among menH376. 13The threeH7969 olderH1419 sonsH1121 of JesseH3448 had 24goneH1980 afterH310 SaulH7586 to the battleH4421. And 25the namesH8034 of his threeH7969 sonsH1121 whoH834 wentH1980 to the battleH4421 were EliabH446 the firstbornH1060, and the secondH4932 to him AbinadabH41, and the thirdH7992 ShammahH8048. 1426DavidH1732 was the youngestH6996. Now the threeH7969 oldestH1419 followedH1980H310 SaulH7586, 1527but DavidH1732 wentH1980H7725 backH7725 and forth from SaulH7586 28to tendH7462 his father’sH1 flockH6629 at BethlehemH1035. 16The PhilistineH6430 cameH5066 29forwardH5066 morningH7925 and eveningH6150 for fortyH705 daysH3117 and tookH3320 his standH3320.
17Then JesseH3448 saidH559 to DavidH1732 his sonH1121, “30TakeH3947 nowH4994 for your brothersH251 an ephahH374 of thisH2088 roastedH7039 grainH7039 and theseH2088 tenH6235 loavesH3899 and runH7323 to the campH4264 to your brothersH251. 1831BringH935 also theseH428 tenH6235 cutsH2757 of cheeseH2461 to the commanderH8269 of their thousandH505, 32and lookH6485 into the welfareH7965 of your brothersH251, and bringH3947 back 33newsH6161 of them. 19For SaulH7586 and they and allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 are in the valleyH6010 of ElahH424, fightingH3898 with the PhilistinesH6430.”
David Accepts the Challenge
20So DavidH1732 aroseH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242 and leftH5203 the flockH6629 with a keeperH8104 and tookH5375 the supplies and wentH1980 as JesseH3448 had commandedH6680 him. And he cameH935 to the 34circleH4570 of the campH4570 while the armyH2428 was goingH3318 out in battleH4634 arrayH4634 shoutingH7321 the warH4421 cryH7321. 21IsraelH3478 and the PhilistinesH6430 drewH6186 up in battleH6186 array, armyH4634 againstH7122 armyH4634. 22Then DavidH1732 leftH5203 his 35baggageH3627 in the 36careH3027 of the baggageH3627 keeperH8104, and ranH7323 to the battleH4634 lineH4634 and enteredH935 in order to greetH7592H7965 his brothersH251. 23As he was talkingH1696 with them, beholdH2009, the championH376H996, the PhilistineH6430 from GathH1661 namedH8034 GoliathH1555, was comingH5927 up from the armyH4634 of the PhilistinesH6430, and he spokeH1696 37theseH428 sameH428 wordsH1697; and DavidH1732 heardH8085 them.
24When allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 sawH7200 the manH376, they fledH5127 from him and were greatlyH3966 afraidH3372. 25The menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559, “Have you seenH7200 thisH2088 manH376 who is comingH5927 up? SurelyH3588 he is comingH5927 up to defyH2778 IsraelH3478. And it will be that the kingH4428 will enrichH6238 the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 him with greatH1419 richesH6239 and 38will giveH5414 him his daughterH1323 and makeH6213 his father’sH1 houseH1004 39freeH2670 in IsraelH3478.”
26Then DavidH1732 spokeH559 to the menH376 who were standingH5975 by him, sayingH559, “WhatH4100 will be doneH6213 for the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 thisH1975 PhilistineH6430 and takesH5493 awayH5493 40the reproachH2781 from IsraelH3478? For whoH4310 is thisH2088 41uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430, that he should 42tauntH2778 the armiesH4634 of 43the livingH2416 GodH430?” 27The peopleH5971 44answeredH559 him in accord with thisH2088 wordH1697, sayingH559, “45ThusH3541 it will be doneH6213 for the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 him.”
28Now EliabH446 his oldestH1419 brotherH251 heardH8085 when he spokeH1696 to the menH376; and 46Eliab’sH446 angerH639 burnedH2734 against DavidH1732 and he saidH559, “WhyH4100 have you comeH3381 downH3381? And with whomH4310 have you leftH5203 thoseH2007 fewH4592 sheepH6629 in the wildernessH4057? I knowH3045 your insolenceH2087 and the wickednessH7455 of your heartH3824; for you have comeH3381 downH3381 in orderH4616 to seeH7200 the battleH4421.” 29But DavidH1732 saidH559, “WhatH4100 have I doneH6213 nowH6258? Was it not just a 47questionH1697?” 30Then he turnedH5437 48awayH5437H681 from him to anotherH312 and 49saidH559 the sameH2088 thingH1697; and the peopleH5971 answeredH7725 the sameH1697 thingH1697 as 50beforeH7223.
David Kills Goliath
31When the wordsH1697 whichH834 DavidH1732 spokeH1696 were heardH8085, they toldH5046 them 51to SaulH7586, and he sentH3947 for him. 32DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “52Let noH408 man’sH120 heartH3820 failH5307 on accountH5921 of him; 53your servantH5650 will goH1980 and fightH3898 with thisH2088 PhilistineH6430.” 33Then SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “54You are not ableH3201 to goH1980 againstH413 thisH2088 PhilistineH6430 to fightH3898 with him; for you are but a youthH5271 while he has been a warriorH4421 from his youthH5271.” 34But DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “Your servantH5650 was tendingH7462 his father’sH1 sheepH6629. When a lionH738 or a bearH1677 cameH935 and tookH5375 a lambH7716 from the flockH5739, 35I wentH3318 out afterH310 him and 55attackedH5221 him, and 56rescuedH5337 it from his mouthH6310; and when he roseH6965 up againstH5921 me, I seizedH2388 him by his beardH2206 and 57struckH5221 him and killedH4191 him. 36Your servantH5650 has 58killedH5221 bothH1571 the lionH738 and the bearH1677; and thisH2088 uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430 will be like oneH259 of them, sinceH3588 he has tauntedH2778 the armiesH4634 of the livingH2416 GodH430.” 37And DavidH1732 saidH559, “59The LordH3068 whoH834 deliveredH5337 me from the pawH3027 of the lionH738 and from the pawH3027 of the bearH1677, He will deliverH5337 me from the handH3027 of thisH2088 PhilistineH6430.” And SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “60GoH1980, and may the LordH3068 be with you.” 38Then SaulH7586 clothedH3847 DavidH1732 with his garmentsH4055 and putH5414 a bronzeH5178 helmetH6959 on his headH7218, and he clothedH3847 him with armorH8302. 39DavidH1732 girdedH2296 his swordH2719 overH4480H5921 his armorH4055 and triedH2974 to walkH1980, for he had not testedH5254 them. So DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “I cannotH3201H3808 goH1980 with theseH428, for I have not testedH5254 them.” And DavidH1732 tookH5493 them 61offH4480H5921. 40He tookH3947 his stickH4731 in his handH3027 and choseH977 for himself fiveH2568 smoothH2512 stonesH68 from the brookH5158, and putH7760 them in the shepherd’sH7462 bagH3627 whichH834 he had, even in his pouchH3219, and 62his slingH7050 was in his handH3027; and he approachedH5066 the PhilistineH6430.
41Then the PhilistineH6430 cameH1980 on and approachedH7126 DavidH1732, with the shield-bearerH6793H5375 in frontH6440 of him. 42When the PhilistineH6430 lookedH5027 and sawH7200 DavidH1732, 63he disdainedH959 him; for he was but a youthH5288, and 64ruddyH132, with a handsomeH3303 appearanceH4758. 43The PhilistineH6430 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “65Am I a dogH3611, that you comeH935 to me with sticksH4731?” And 66the PhilistineH6430 cursedH7043 DavidH1732 by his godsH430. 44The PhilistineH6430 also saidH559 to DavidH1732, “ComeH1980 to me, and I will giveH5414 your fleshH1320 67to the birdsH5775 of the skyH8064 and the beastsH929 of the fieldH7704.” 45Then DavidH1732 saidH559 to the PhilistineH6430, “You comeH935 to me with a swordH2719, a spearH2595, and a javelinH3591, 68but I comeH935 to you in the nameH8034 of the LordH3068 of hostsH6635, the GodH430 of the armiesH4634 of IsraelH3478, whomH834 you have tauntedH2778. 46ThisH2088 dayH3117 the LordH3068 will deliverH5462 you up into my handsH3027, and I will strikeH5221 you downH5221 and removeH5493 your headH7218 from you. And I will giveH5414 the 69deadH6297 bodiesH6297 of the armyH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 thisH2088 dayH3117 to the birdsH5775 of the skyH8064 and the wildH2421 beastsH2421 of the earthH776, 70that allH3605 the earthH776 may knowH3045 that thereH3426 is a GodH430 in IsraelH3478, 47and that allH3605 thisH2088 assemblyH6951 may knowH3045 that 71the LordH3068 does not deliverH3467 by swordH2719 or by spearH2595; 72for the battleH4421 is the Lord’sH3068 and He will giveH5414 you into our handsH3027.”
48Then it happenedH1961 whenH3588 the PhilistineH6430 roseH6965 and cameH1980 and drewH7126 nearH7126 to meetH7122 DavidH1732, that 73DavidH1732 ranH7323 quicklyH4116 toward the battleH4634 lineH4634 to meetH7122 the PhilistineH6430. 49And DavidH1732 putH7971 his handH3027 into his bagH3627 and tookH3947 from it a stoneH68 and slungH7049 it, and struckH5221 the PhilistineH6430 on his foreheadH4696. And the stoneH68 sankH2883 into his foreheadH4696, so that he fellH5307 on his faceH6440 to the groundH776.
50Thus DavidH1732 prevailedH2388 overH4480 the PhilistineH6430 with a slingH7050 and a stoneH68, and he struckH5221 the PhilistineH6430 and killedH4191 him; but thereH369 was noH369 swordH2719 in David’sH1732 handH3027. 51Then DavidH1732 ranH7323 and stoodH5975 overH413 the PhilistineH6430 and 74tookH3947 his swordH2719 and drewH8025 it out of its sheathH8593 and killedH4191 him, and cutH3772 offH3772 his headH7218 with it. 75When the PhilistinesH6430 sawH7200 that their championH1368 was deadH4191, they fledH5127. 52The menH376 of IsraelH3478 and JudahH3063 aroseH6965 and shoutedH7321 and pursuedH7291 the PhilistinesH6430 76as farH5704 as the valleyH1516, and to the gatesH8179 of 77EkronH6138. And the slainH2491 PhilistinesH6430 78layH5307 along the wayH1870 to 79ShaaraimH8189, even to GathH1661 and EkronH6138. 53The sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 returnedH7725 from chasingH1814 the PhilistinesH6430 and plunderedH8155 their campsH4264. 54Then DavidH1732 tookH3947 the Philistine’sH6430 headH7218 and broughtH935 it to JerusalemH3389, but he putH7760 his weaponsH3627 in his tentH168.
55Now when SaulH7586 sawH7200 DavidH1732 goingH3318 out againstH7122 the PhilistineH6430, he saidH559 to AbnerH74 the commanderH8269 of the armyH6635, “AbnerH74, whoseH4310 sonH1121 is 80thisH2088 youngH5288 manH5288?” And AbnerH74 saidH559, “By your lifeH5315, O kingH4428, I do not knowH3045.” 56The kingH4428 saidH559, “You inquireH7592 whoseH4310 sonH1121 the youthH5958 is.” 57So when DavidH1732 returnedH7725 from killingH5221 the PhilistineH6430, AbnerH74 tookH3947 him and 81broughtH935 him beforeH6440 SaulH7586 with the Philistine’sH6430 headH7218 in his handH3027. 58SaulH7586 saidH559 to him, “WhoseH4310 sonH1121 are you, youngH5288 manH5288?” And DavidH1732 answeredH559, “82I am the sonH1121 of your servantH5650 JesseH3448 the BethlehemiteH1022.”
