Goliath’s Challenge
1Now 1the PhilistinesH6430 gatheredH622 their armiesH4264 for battleH4421; and they were gatheredH622 at SocohH7755 whichH834 belongs to JudahH3063, and they campedH2583 betweenH996 2SocohH7755 and 3AzekahH5825, in 4Ephes-dammimH658. 2SaulH7586 and the menH376 of IsraelH3478 were assembledH622 and campedH2583 in 5the ValleyH6010 of ElahH424, and they drewH6186 upH6186 in battleH4421 formationH4421 to confrontH7122 the PhilistinesH6430. 3The PhilistinesH6430 were standingH5975 on the mountainH2022 on oneH2088 sideH2088, while IsraelH3478 was standingH5975 on the mountainH2022 on the otherH2088 sideH2088, with the valleyH1516 betweenH996 them. 4Then a championH376H996 cameH3318 forwardH3318 from the armyH4264 encampmentH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430, namedH8034 6GoliathH1555, from 7GathH1661. His heightH1363 was 8sixH8337 cubitsH520 and a 9spanH2239. 5And he had a bronzeH5178 helmetH3553 on his headH7218, and he woreH3847 scale-armorH7193 10which weighedH4948 11fiveH2568 thousandH505 shekelsH8255 of bronzeH5178. 6He also had bronzeH5178 12greavesH4697 on his legsH7272 and a 13bronzeH5178 14saberH3591 slung betweenH996 his shouldersH3802. 715The shaftH2671 of his spearH2595 was like a weaver’sH707 beamH4500, and the headH3852 of his spearH2595 weighed 16sixH8337 hundredH3967 shekelsH8255 of ironH1270; and 17his shield-carrierH6793H5375 walkedH1980 in frontH6440 of him. 8He stoodH5975 and shoutedH7121 to the ranksH4634 of IsraelH3478 and saidH559 to them, “WhyH4100 do you comeH3318 outH3318 to drawH6186 upH6186 in battleH4421 formationH4421? Am I not the PhilistineH6430, and you the 18servantsH5650 of SaulH7586? ChooseH1262 a manH376 asH1262 your representativeH1262 and have him comeH3381 downH3381 to me. 919IfH518 he isH3201 ableH3201 to fightH3898 me and 20killH5221 me, then we will becomeH1961 your servantsH5650; but ifH518 I prevailH3201 against him and 21killH5221 him, then you shall becomeH1961 our servantsH5650 and serveH5647 us.” 10Then the PhilistineH6430 saidH559, “22I have defiedH2778 the ranksH4634 of IsraelH3478 thisH2088 dayH3117! GiveH5414 me a manH376, so that we may fightH3898 togetherH3162.” 11When SaulH7586 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 heardH8085 theseH428 wordsH1697 of the PhilistineH6430, they were dismayedH2865 and veryH3966 fearfulH3372.
12Now DavidH1732 was 23the sonH1121 of 24the 25EphrathiteH673 of BethlehemH1035 in JudahH3063, the man whose nameH8034 was JesseH3448, and 26he had eightH8083 sonsH1121. And 27Jesse wasH2204 oldH2204 in the daysH3117 of SaulH7586, advancedH935 in years among menH376. 13The threeH7969 olderH1419 sonsH1121 of JesseH3448 had 28followedH1980H310 SaulH7586 to the battleH4421. And 29the namesH8034 of his threeH7969 sonsH1121 whoH834 had goneH1980 into the battleH4421 were EliabH446 the firstbornH1060, and secondH4932 to him, AbinadabH41, and the thirdH7992, ShammahH8048. 14So 30DavidH1732 was the youngestH6996. Now the threeH7969 oldestH1419 followedH1980H310 SaulH7586, 1531but DavidH1732 wentH1980 backH7725 and forthH1980 from SaulH7586 32to tendH7462 his father’sH1 flockH6629 at BethlehemH1035. 16And the PhilistineH6430 cameH5066 forwardH5066 morningH7925 and eveningH6150, and tookH3320 his standH3320 for fortyH705 daysH3117.
17Then JesseH3448 saidH559 to his sonH1121 DavidH1732, “33TakeH3947 nowH4994 for your brothersH251 an ephahH374 of thisH2088 roastedH7039 grainH7039 and theseH2088 tenH6235 loavesH3899, and runH7323 to the campH4264 to your brothersH251. 1834BringH935 also theseH428 tenH6235 slicesH2757 of cheeseH2461 to the commanderH8269 of their thousandH505, 35and lookH6485 into the well-beingH7965 of your brothersH251 and bringH3947 back 36confirmationH6161 from them. 19For SaulH7586 and they and allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 are in the ValleyH6010 of ElahH424, fightingH3898 the PhilistinesH6430.”
David Accepts the Challenge
20So DavidH1732 gotH7925 upH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242 and leftH5203 the flockH6629 with a keeperH8104, and tookH5375 the supplies and wentH1980 as JesseH3448 had commandedH6680 him. And he cameH935 to the 37entrenchmentH4570 encirclingH4570 the campH4570 while the armyH2428 was goingH3318 outH3318 in battleH4634 formationH4634, shoutingH7321 theH7321 warH4421 cryH7321. 21IsraelH3478 and the PhilistinesH6430 drewH6186 upH6186 inH6186 battleH6186 formationH6186, armyH4634 againstH7122 armyH4634. 22Then DavidH1732 leftH5203 the 38baggageH3627 in the 39careH3027 of the baggageH3627 keeperH8104 and ranH7323 to the battleH4634 lineH4634. And he enteredH935 and 40greetedH7592H7965 his brothersH251. 23As he was speakingH1696 with them, beholdH2009, the championH376H996, the PhilistineH6430 from GathH1661 namedH8034 GoliathH1555, was comingH5927 upH5927 from the armyH4634 of the PhilistinesH6430, and he spokeH1696 41theseH428 same wordsH1697; and DavidH1732 heardH8085 him.
24When allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 sawH7200 the manH376, they fledH5127 from him and wereH3372 veryH3966 fearfulH3372. 25And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559, “Have you seenH7200 thisH2088 manH376 who is comingH5927 upH5927? SurelyH3588 he is comingH5927 upH5927 to defyH2778 IsraelH3478. And it will be that the kingH4428 will makeH6238 the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 him wealthyH6238 with greatH1419 richesH6239, and 42will giveH5414 him his daughterH1323 and makeH6213 his father’sH1 houseH1004 43freeH2670 in IsraelH3478.”
26Then DavidH1732 saidH559 to the menH376 who were standingH5975 by him, “WhatH4100 will be doneH6213 for the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 thisH1975 PhilistineH6430 and ridsH5493 IsraelH3478 of 44the disgraceH2781? For whoH4310 is thisH2088 45uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430, that he has dared to 46defyH2778 the armiesH4634 of 47the livingH2416 GodH430?” 27The peopleH5971 48answeredH559 him in agreement with thisH2088 statementH1697, sayingH559, “49ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 will be doneH6213 for the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 him.”
28Now EliabH446 his oldestH1419 brotherH251 heardH8085 him when he spokeH1696 to the menH376; and 50Eliab’sH446 angerH639 burnedH2734 against DavidH1732 and he saidH559, “WhyH4100 is it that you have comeH3381 downH3381? And with whomH4310 have you leftH5203 thoseH2007 fewH4592 sheepH6629 in the wildernessH4057? I myselfH589 knowH3045 your insolenceH2087 and the wickednessH7455 of your heartH3824; for you have comeH3381 downH3381 inH4616 orderH4616 toH4616 seeH7200 the battleH4421.” 29But DavidH1732 saidH559, “WhatH4100 have I doneH6213 nowH6258? Was it not just a 51questionH1697?” 30Then he turnedH5437 52awayH5437H681 from him to anotherH312 and 53saidH559 the sameH2088 thingH1697; and the peopleH5971 repliedH7725 with the same wordsH1697 as 54beforeH7223.
David Kills Goliath
31When the wordsH1697 that DavidH1732 spokeH1696 were heardH8085, they informedH5046 55SaulH7586, and he 56sentH3947 for him. 32And DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “57May noH408 one’sH120 heartH3820 failH5307 onH5921 accountH5921 ofH5921 him; 58your servantH5650 will goH1980 and fightH3898 thisH2088 PhilistineH6430!” 33But SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “59You areH3201 not ableH3201 to goH1980 againstH413 thisH2088 PhilistineH6430 to fightH3898 him; for you are only a youthH5271, while he has been a warriorH4421 sinceH4480 his youthH5271.” 34But DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “Your servantH5650 was tendingH7462 his father’sH1 sheepH6629. When a lionH738 or a bearH1677 cameH935 and tookH5375 a sheepH7716 from the flockH5739, 35I wentH3318 outH3318 afterH310 it and 60attackedH5221 it, and 61rescuedH5337 the sheep from its mouthH6310; and when it roseH6965 upH6965 againstH5921 me, I grabbedH2388 it by its maneH2206 and struckH5221 it and killedH4191 it. 36Your servantH5650 has 62killedH5221 bothH1571 the lionH738 and the bearH1677; and thisH2088 uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430 will be like oneH259 of them, sinceH3588 he has defiedH2778 the armiesH4634 of the livingH2416 GodH430.” 37And DavidH1732 saidH559, “63The LordH3068 whoH834 savedH5337 me from the pawH3027 of the lionH738 and the pawH3027 of the bearH1677, He will saveH5337 me from the handH3027 of thisH2088 PhilistineH6430.” So SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “64GoH1980, and may the LordH3068 be with you.” 38Then SaulH7586 clothedH3847 DavidH1732 with his militaryH4055 attireH4055 and putH5414 a bronzeH5178 helmetH6959 on his headH7218, and outfittedH3847 him with armorH8302. 39And DavidH1732 strappedH2296 onH2296 his swordH2719 overH4480H5921 his militaryH4055 attireH4055 and struggledH2974 at walkingH1980, for he had not trainedH5254 with the armor. So DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “I cannotH3201H3808 goH1980 with theseH428, becauseH3588 I have not trainedH5254 with them.” And DavidH1732 tookH5493 them 65offH4480H5921. 40Then he tookH3947 his staffH4731 in his handH3027 and choseH977 for himself fiveH2568 smoothH2512 stonesH68 from the brookH5158, and putH7760 them in the shepherd’sH7462 bagH3627 whichH834 he had, that is, in his shepherd’sH3219 pouchH3219, and 66his slingH7050 was in his handH3027; and he approachedH5066 the PhilistineH6430.
41Then the PhilistineH6430 cameH1980 and approachedH7126 DavidH1732, with the shield-bearerH6793H5375 in frontH6440 of him. 42When the PhilistineH6430 lookedH5027 and sawH7200 DavidH1732, 67he wasH959 contemptuousH959 of him; for he was only a youthH5288, and 6869reddishH132, with a handsomeH3303 appearanceH4758. 43So the PhilistineH6430 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “70Am I a dogH3611, that you comeH935 to me with sticksH4731?” And 71the PhilistineH6430 cursedH7043 DavidH1732 by his godsH430. 44The PhilistineH6430 also saidH559 to DavidH1732, “ComeH1980 to me, and I will giveH5414 your fleshH1320 72to the birdsH5775 of the skyH8064 and the 73wildH7704 animalsH929.” 45But DavidH1732 saidH559 to the PhilistineH6430, “You comeH935 to me with a swordH2719, a spearH2595, and a 74saberH3591, 75but I comeH935 to you in the nameH8034 of the LordH3068 of armiesH6635, the GodH430 of the armiesH4634 of IsraelH3478, whomH834 you have defiedH2778. 46ThisH2088 dayH3117 the LordH3068 will handH5462H3027 you overH5462 to me, and I will strikeH5221 you and removeH5493 your headH7218 from you. Then I will giveH5414 the 76deadH6297 bodiesH6297 of the armyH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 thisH2088 dayH3117 to the birdsH5775 of the skyH8064 and the wildH2421 animalsH2421 of the earthH776, 77so that allH3605 the earthH776 may knowH3045 that thereH3426 isH3426 a GodH430 in IsraelH3478, 47and that thisH2088 entireH3605 assemblyH6951 may knowH3045 that 78the LordH3068 does not saveH3467 by swordH2719 or by spearH2595; 79for the battleH4421 is the Lord’sH3068, and He will handH5414H3027 you overH5414 to us!”
48Then it happenedH1961, whenH3588 the PhilistineH6430 80cameH1980 closerH7126 to meetH7122 DavidH1732, that 81DavidH1732 ranH7323 quicklyH4116 toward the battleH4634 lineH4634 to meetH7122 the PhilistineH6430. 49And DavidH1732 putH7971 his handH3027 into his bagH3627 and tookH3947 from it a stoneH68 and slungH7049 it, and struckH5221 the PhilistineH6430 on his foreheadH4696. And the stoneH68 penetratedH2883 his foreheadH4696, and he fellH5307 on his faceH6440 to the groundH776.
50So DavidH1732 prevailedH2388 overH4480 the PhilistineH6430 with the slingH7050 and the stoneH68: he struckH5221 the PhilistineH6430 and killedH4191 him, and thereH369 wasH369 noH369 swordH2719 in David’sH1732 handH3027. 51Then DavidH1732 ranH7323 and stoodH5975 overH413 the PhilistineH6430, and 82tookH3947 his swordH2719 and drewH8025 it outH8025 of its sheathH8593 and finishedH4191 him, and cutH3772 offH3772 his headH7218 with it. 83When the PhilistinesH6430 sawH7200 that their championH1368 was deadH4191, they fledH5127. 52Then the menH376 of IsraelH3478 and JudahH3063 roseH6965 upH6965 and shoutedH7321, and they pursuedH7291 the PhilistinesH6430 84as farH5704 as the valleyH1516, and to the gatesH8179 of 85EkronH6138. And the PhilistineH6430 deadH2491 86layH5307 along the wayH1870 to 87ShaaraimH8189, even to GathH1661 and EkronH6138. 53Then the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 returnedH7725 from their closeH1814 pursuitH310H1814 of the PhilistinesH6430, and plunderedH8155 their campsH4264. 54And DavidH1732 tookH3947 the Philistine’sH6430 headH7218 and broughtH935 it to JerusalemH3389, but he putH7760 his weaponsH3627 in his tentH168.
55Now when SaulH7586 had seenH7200 DavidH1732 goingH3318 outH3318 againstH7122 the PhilistineH6430, he saidH559 to AbnerH74 the commanderH8269 of the armyH6635, “AbnerH74, whoseH4310 sonH1121 is 88thisH2088 youngH5288 manH5288?” And AbnerH74 saidH559, “By your lifeH5315, O kingH4428, I do not knowH3045.” 56And the kingH4428 saidH559, “You then, askH7592 whoseH4310 sonH1121 the youthH5958 is.” 57So when DavidH1732 returnedH7725 from killingH5221 the PhilistineH6430, AbnerH74 tookH3947 him and 89broughtH935 him beforeH6440 SaulH7586 with the Philistine’sH6430 headH7218 in his handH3027. 58Then SaulH7586 saidH559 to him, “WhoseH4310 sonH1121 are you, youngH5288 manH5288?” And DavidH1732 answeredH559, “90I am the sonH1121 of your servantH5650 JesseH3448 the BethlehemiteH1022.”
