1 Samuel Chapter 1
Revised Version 1895
1NowH1961 there was a certainH259 manH376 of Ramathaim-zophimH7436, of the hillH2022 countryH2022 of EphraimH669, and his nameH8034 was ElkanahH511, the sonH1121 of JerohamH3395, the sonH1121 of ElihuH453, the sonH1121 of TohuH8459, the sonH1121 of ZuphH6689, an EphraimiteH673: 2and he had twoH8147 wivesH802; the nameH8034 of the one was HannahH2584, and the nameH8034 of the otherH259 PeninnahH6444: and PeninnahH6444 had childrenH3206, but HannahH2584 had noH369 childrenH3206. 3And this manH376 wentH5927 upH5927 outH8147 of his cityH5892 from yearH3117 to yearH3117 to worshipH7812 and to sacrificeH2076 unto the LORDH3068 of hostsH6635 in ShilohH7887. And the twoH8147 sonsH1121 of EliH5941, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372, priestsH3548 unto the LORDH3068, were there. 4And when the dayH3117 cameH1961 that ElkanahH511 sacrificedH2076, he gaveH5414 to PeninnahH6444 his wifeH802, and to allH3605 herH3605 sonsH1121 and herH3605 daughtersH1323 portionsH4490: 5but unto HannahH2584 he gaveH5414 a doubleH639 portionH4490: for he lovedH157 HannahH2584, but the LORDH3068 had shutH5462 upH5462 herH5414 wombH7358. 6And herH5462 rival provokedH3707 herH5462 sore, for to makeH3588 herH5462 fret, becauseH3588 the LORDH3068 had shutH5462 upH5462 herH5462 wombH7358. 7And as he didH6213 soH3651 yearH8141 by yearH8141, when sheH3808 wentH5927 upH5927 to the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, soH3651 sheH3808 provokedH3707 herH398; therefore sheH3808 weptH1058, and didH6213 notH3808 eatH398. 8And ElkanahH511 herH398 husbandH376 saidH559 unto herH398, HannahH2584, whyH4100 weepest thou? and whyH4100 eatest thou notH3808? and whyH4100 is thy heartH3824 grieved? am notH3808 I betterH2896 to thee thanH3808 tenH6235 sonsH1121? 9SoH6965 HannahH2584 roseH6965 upH6965 afterH310 they had eatenH398 in ShilohH7887, and afterH310 they had drunkH8354. NowH310 EliH5941 the priestH3548 satH3427 uponH5921 his seatH3678 by the doorH4201 postH4201 of the templeH1964 of the LORDH3068. 10And sheH1931 was in bitternessH4751 of soulH5315, and prayedH6419 unto the LORDH3068, and weptH1058 sore. 11And sheH518 vowedH5087 a vowH5088, and saidH559, O LORDH3068 of hostsH6635, ifH518 thou wilt indeedH518 lookH7200 on the affliction of thine handmaidH519, and rememberH2142 meH5414, and notH3808 forgetH7911 thine handmaidH519, but wilt giveH5414 unto thine handmaidH519 a manH376 childH2233, then I will giveH5414 him unto the LORDH3068 allH3605 the daysH3117 of his lifeH3117, and there shall noH3808 razor comeH5927 uponH5921 his headH7218. 12And it cameH1961 to passH1961, as sheH3588 continuedH1961 prayingH6419 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, that EliH5941 marked herH1961 mouthH6310. 13NowH8085 HannahH2584, sheH1931 spake in herH5921 heartH3820; onlyH7535 herH5921 lipsH8193 moved, but herH5921 voiceH6963 was notH3808 heardH8085: therefore EliH5941 thoughtH3820 sheH1931 had been drunkenH7910. 14And EliH5941 saidH559 unto herH413, HowH4970 longH5704 wilt thou be drunken? putH5493 awayH5493 thy wineH3196 from thee. 15And HannahH2584 answeredH559 and saidH559, NoH3808, my lordH3068, I am a womanH802 of a sorrowful spiritH7307: I have drunkH8354 neitherH3808 wineH3196 norH3808 strongH7941 drinkH8354, but I pouredH8210 outH8210 my soulH5315 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 16Count notH408 thine handmaidH519 for a daughterH1323 of Belial: for outH6440 of the abundanceH7230 of my complaintH7879 and my provocation have I spokenH1696 hitherto. 17Then EliH5941 answeredH559 and saidH559, Go in peaceH7965: and the GodH430 of IsraelH3478 grantH5414 thy petitionH7596 that thou hast askedH7592 of him. 18And sheH3808 saidH559, LetH1961 thy servantH8198 findH4672 graceH2580 in thy sightH5869. SoH1961 the womanH802 wentH6440 herH802 wayH1870, and didH3808 eatH398, and herH802 countenanceH6440 was noH3808 moreH5750 sad. 19And they roseH7925 upH7925 in the morningH1242 earlyH7925, and worshipped beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, and returnedH7725, and cameH935 to their houseH1004 to RamahH7414: and ElkanahH511 knewH3045 HannahH2584 his wifeH802; and the LORDH3068 rememberedH2142 herH413. 20And it cameH1961 to passH1961, when the time was comeH1961 aboutH1961, that HannahH2584 conceivedH2029, and bare a sonH1121; and sheH3588 calledH7121 his nameH8034 SamuelH8050, saying, BecauseH3588 I have askedH7592 him of the LORDH3068. 21And the manH376 ElkanahH511, and allH3605 his houseH1004, wentH5927 upH5927 to offerH5927 unto the LORDH3068 the yearlyH3117 sacrificeH2077, and his vowH5088. 22But HannahH2584 wentH935 notH3808 upH5927; for sheH3588 saidH559 unto herH7200 husbandH376, I will notH3808 goH935 upH5927 untilH5704 the childH5288 be weanedH1580, and then I will bringH935 him, that he may appearH7200 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068, and there abideH3427 for everH5769. 23And ElkanahH511 herH802 husbandH376 saidH559 unto herH802, DoH6213 whatH1697 seemeth thee goodH2896; tarry untilH5704 thou have weanedH1580 him; onlyH389 the LORDH3068 establishH6965 his wordH1697. SoH6213 the womanH802 tarried and gaveH559 herH802 sonH1121 suckH3243, untilH5704 sheH2896 weanedH1580 him. 24And when sheH834 had weanedH1580 him, sheH834 tookH5927 him upH5927 with herH935, with threeH7969 bullocks, and one ephahH374 of mealH7058, and a bottle of wineH3196, and broughtH935 him unto the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 in ShilohH7887: and the childH5288 was youngH5288. 25And they slewH7819 the bullock, and broughtH935 the childH5288 to EliH5941. 26And sheH5973 saidH559, Oh my lordH3068, as thy soulH5315 liveth, my lordH3068, I am the womanH802 that stoodH5324 by thee hereH2088, prayingH6419 unto the LORDH3068. 27For this childH5288 I prayedH6419; and the LORDH3068 hath givenH5414 meH413 my petitionH7596 whichH834 I askedH7592 of him: 28wherefore I also have granted him to the LORDH3068; as longH3117 as he liveth he is granted to the LORDH3068. And he worshipped the LORDH3068 there.
