Jeremiah 38:1-13

1And ShephatiahH8203 the sonH1121 of MattanH4977, and GedaliahH1436 the sonH1121 of PashhurH6583, and Jucal the sonH1121 of ShelemiahH8018, and PashhurH6583 the sonH1121 of Malchijah, heardH8085 the wordsH1697 that JeremiahH3414 spake unto all the peopleH5971, sayingH559, 2ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, He that abideth in this cityH5892 shall dieH4191 by the swordH2719, by the famineH7458, and by the pestilenceH1698; but he that goeth forthH3318 to the ChaldeansH3778 shall live, and his lifeH5315 shall beH1961 unto him for a prey, and he shall live. 3ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, This cityH5892 shall surely be givenH5414 into the handH3027 of the armyH2428 of the kingH4428 of BabylonH894, and he shall takeH3920 it. 4Then the princesH8269 saidH559 unto the kingH4428, Let this manH376, we pray thee, be putH4191 to deathH4191; forasmuch as he weakeneth the handsH3027 of the menH376 of warH4421 that remainH7604 in this cityH5892, and the handsH3027 of all the peopleH5971, in speakingH1696 such wordsH1697 unto them: for this manH376 seeketh not the welfareH7965 of this peopleH5971, but the hurt. 5And ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 saidH559, Behold, he is in your handH3027; for the kingH4428 is not he that can do anythingH1697 against you. 6Then tookH3947 they JeremiahH3414, and castH7993 him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king’s sonH1121, that was in the courtH2691 of the guardH4307: and they let down JeremiahH3414 with cordsH2256. And in the dungeon there was no waterH4325, but mire; and JeremiahH3414 sank in the mire.

7Now when Ebed-melechH5663 the Ethiopian, a eunuchH5631, who was in the king’sH4428 houseH1004, heardH8085 that they had putH5414 JeremiahH3414 in the dungeon (the kingH4428 then sittingH3427 in the gateH8179 of BenjaminH1144), 8Ebed-melechH5663 wentH3318 forthH3318 out of the king’sH4428 houseH1004, and spake to the kingH4428, sayingH559, 9My lordH113 the kingH4428, these menH376 have done evilH7489 in all that they have done to JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030, whom they have castH7993 into the dungeon; and he is like to dieH4191 in the placeH8478 whereH834 he is, because of the famineH7458; for there is no more breadH3899 in the cityH5892. 10Then the kingH4428 commandedH6680 Ebed-melechH5663 the Ethiopian, sayingH559, TakeH3947 from hence thirtyH7970 menH376 with thee, and takeH3947 up JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030 out of the dungeon, before he dieH4191. 11So Ebed-melechH5663 tookH3947 the menH376 with him, and wentH935 into the houseH1004 of the kingH4428 under the treasuryH214, and tookH3947 thence ragsH4418 and worn-outH1094 garments, and let them down by cordsH2256 into the dungeon to JeremiahH3414. 12And Ebed-melechH5663 the Ethiopian saidH559 unto JeremiahH3414, PutH7760 now these ragsH4418 and worn-outH1094 garments under thine armholes under the cordsH2256. And JeremiahH3414 did soH3651. 13So they drewH4900 up JeremiahH3414 with the cordsH2256, and took him up out of the dungeon: and JeremiahH3414 remainedH3427 in the courtH2691 of the guardH4307.
