Genesis 31

American Standard Version

1And he heardH8085 the wordsH1697 of Laban’s sonsH1121, sayingH559, JacobH3290 hath takenH3947 awayH3947 all that was our father’sH1; and of that which was our father’sH1 hath he gotten all this gloryH3519. 2And JacobH3290 beheld the countenance of LabanH3837, and, behold, it was not toward him as beforetime. 3And Jehovah saidH559 unto JacobH3290, ReturnH7725 unto the landH776 of thy fathersH1, and to thy kindredH4138; and I will beH1961 with thee. 4And JacobH3290 sentH7971 and calledH7121 RachelH7354 and LeahH3812 to the fieldH7704 unto his flockH6629, 5and saidH559 unto them, I seeH7200 your father’sH1 countenance, that it is not toward me as beforetime; but the GodH430 of my fatherH1 hath beenH1961 with me. 6And ye knowH3045 that with all my powerH3581 I have servedH5647 your fatherH1. 7And your fatherH1 hath deceived me, and changedH2498 my wagesH4909 tenH6235 times; but GodH430 suffered him not to hurt me. 8If he saidH559 thusH3541, The speckled shall beH1961 thy wagesH7939; then all the flockH6629 bare speckled: and if he saidH559 thusH3541, The ringstreaked shall beH1961 thy wagesH7939; then bare all the flockH6629 ringstreaked. 9Thus GodH430 hath taken awayH5337 the cattle of your fatherH1, and givenH5414 them to me. 10And it came to pass at the timeH6256 that the flockH6629 conceive, that I liftedH5375 up mine eyesH5869, and sawH7200 in a dreamH2472, and, behold, the he-goats which leaped upon the flockH6629 wereH1961 ringstreaked, speckled, and grizzled. 11And the angelH4397 of GodH430 saidH559 unto me in the dreamH2472, JacobH3290: and I saidH559, HereH2009 am I. 12And he saidH559, LiftH5375 up now thine eyesH5869, and seeH7200: all the he-goats which leap upon the flockH6629 are ringstreaked, speckled, and grizzled: for I have seenH7200 all that LabanH3837 doeth unto thee. 13I am the GodH410 of Beth-el, whereH834 thou anointedst a pillarH4676, whereH834 thou vowedst a vowH5088 unto me: nowH6258 ariseH6965, get thee out from this landH776, and returnH7725 unto the landH776 of thy nativity. 14And RachelH7354 and LeahH3812 answered and saidH559 unto him, Is there yetH5750 any portionH2506 or inheritanceH5159 for us in our father’sH1 houseH1004? 15Are we not accountedH2803 by him as foreignersH5237? for he hath soldH4376 us, and hath alsoH1571 quite devouredH398 our moneyH3701. 16For all the richesH6239 which GodH430 hath taken awayH5337 from our fatherH1, that is ours and our children’s: nowH6258 then, whatsoever GodH430 hath saidH559 unto thee, do.

17Then JacobH3290 roseH6965 up, and setH6965 his sonsH1121 and his wivesH802 upon the camelsH1581; 18and he carried away all his cattle, and all his substance which he had gathered, the cattle of his getting, which he had gathered in Paddan-aram, to goH935 to IsaacH3327 his fatherH1 unto the landH776 of CanaanH3667. 19Now LabanH3837 was goneH1980 to shearH1494 his sheepH6629: and RachelH7354 stoleH1589 the teraphimH8655 that were her father’sH1. 20And JacobH3290 stoleH1589 awayH1272 unawares to LabanH3837 the Syrian, in that he toldH5046 him not that he fledH1272. 21So he fledH1272 with all that he had; and he roseH6965 up, and passedH5674 over the RiverH5104, and setH7760 his faceH6440 toward the mountainH2022 of GileadH1568.

22And it was toldH5046 LabanH3837 on the thirdH7992 dayH3117 that JacobH3290 was fledH1272. 23And he tookH3947 his brethren with him, and pursuedH7291 after him sevenH7651 days’H3117 journeyH1870; and he overtook him in the mountainH2022 of GileadH1568. 24And GodH430 cameH935 to LabanH3837 the Syrian in a dreamH2472 of the nightH3915, and saidH559 unto him, TakeH8104 heedH8104 to thyself that thou speakH1696 not to JacobH3290 either goodH2896 or badH7451. 25And LabanH3837 came up with JacobH3290. Now JacobH3290 had pitchedH8628 his tentH168 in the mountainH2022: and LabanH3837 with his brethren encamped in the mountainH2022 of GileadH1568. 26And LabanH3837 saidH559 to JacobH3290, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolenH1589 away unawares to me, and carried away my daughtersH1323 as captivesH7617 of the swordH2719? 27Wherefore didst thou fleeH1272 secretly, and stealH1589 awayH7971 from me, and didst not tellH5046 me, that I might have sentH7971 thee awayH7971 with mirth and with songsH7892, with tabret and with harpH3658; 28and didst not suffer me to kiss my sonsH1121 and my daughtersH1323? nowH6258 hast thou done foolishlyH5528. 29It is in the power of my handH3027 to do you hurt: but the GodH430 of your fatherH1 spake unto me yesternight, sayingH559, TakeH8104 heedH8104 to thyself that thou speakH1696 not to JacobH3290 either goodH2896 or badH7451. 30And nowH6258, though thou wouldest needs be goneH1980, because thou sore longedst after thy father’sH1 houseH1004, yet wherefore hast thou stolenH1589 my godsH430? 31And JacobH3290 answered and saidH559 to LabanH3837, Because I was afraidH3372: for I saidH559, LestH6435 thou shouldest take thy daughtersH1323 from me by force. 32With whomsoever thou findest thy godsH430, he shall not liveH2421: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and takeH3947 it to thee. For JacobH3290 knewH3045 not that RachelH7354 had stolenH1589 them.

33And LabanH3837 wentH3318 into Jacob’s tentH168, and into Leah’s tentH168, and into the tentH168 of the twoH8147 maid-servants; but he foundH4672 them not. And he wentH3318 out of Leah’s tentH168, and entered into Rachel’s tentH168. 34Now RachelH7354 had takenH3947 the teraphimH8655, and putH7760 them in the camel’sH1581 saddle, and satH3427 upon them. And LabanH3837 feltH4959 about all the tentH168, but foundH4672 them not. 35And she saidH559 to her fatherH1, Let not my lordH113 be angryH2734 that I cannot riseH6965 up before thee; for the manner of womenH802 is upon me. And he searchedH2664, but foundH4672 not the teraphimH8655.

36And JacobH3290 was wroth, and chode with LabanH3837: and JacobH3290 answered and saidH559 to LabanH3837, What is my trespass? what is my sinH2403, that thou hast hotlyH1814 pursued after me? 37Whereas thou hast feltH4959 about all my stuff, what hast thou foundH4672 of all thy householdH1004 stuff? SetH7760 it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us twoH8147. 38These twentyH6242 yearsH8141 have I been with thee; thy ewesH7353 and thy she-goats have not cast their young, and the ramsH352 of thy flocksH6629 have I not eatenH398. 39That which was tornH2966 of beasts I broughtH935 not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my handH3027 didst thou requireH1245 it, whether stolenH1589 by dayH3117 or stolenH1589 by nightH3915. 40Thus I wasH1961; in the dayH3117 the drought consumedH398 me, and the frostH7140 by nightH3915; and my sleepH8142 fledH5074 from mine eyesH5869. 41These twentyH6242 yearsH8141 have I been in thy houseH1004; I servedH5647 thee fourteen yearsH8141 for thy twoH8147 daughtersH1323, and sixH8337 yearsH8141 for thy flockH6629: and thou hast changedH2498 my wagesH4909 tenH6235 times. 42Except the GodH430 of my fatherH1, the GodH430 of AbrahamH85, and the FearH6343 of IsaacH3327, had beenH1961 with me, surely nowH6258 hadst thou sentH7971 me awayH7971 emptyH7387. GodH430 hath seenH7200 mine affliction and the labor of my handsH3709, and rebuked thee yesternight.

43And LabanH3837 answered and saidH559 unto JacobH3290, The daughtersH1323 are my daughtersH1323, and the children are my children, and the flocksH6629 are my flocksH6629, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this dayH3117 unto these my daughtersH1323, or unto their children whom they have borneH3205? 44And nowH6258 come, let us makeH3772 a covenantH1285, I and thou; and let it beH1961 for a witnessH5707 between me and thee. 45And JacobH3290 tookH3947 a stoneH68, and set it up for a pillarH4676. 46And JacobH3290 saidH559 unto his brethren, GatherH3950 stonesH68; and they tookH3947 stonesH68, and madeH6213 a heapH1530: and they did eatH398 there by the heapH1530. 47And LabanH3837 calledH7121 it Jegar-saha-dutha: but JacobH3290 calledH7121 it GaleedH1567. 48And LabanH3837 saidH559, This heapH1530 is witnessH5707 between me and thee this dayH3117. ThereforeH3651 was the nameH8034 of it calledH7121 GaleedH1567: 49and MizpahH4709, for he saidH559, Jehovah watchH6822 between me and thee, when we are absent oneH376 from another. 50If thou shalt afflictH6031 my daughtersH1323, and if thou shalt takeH3947 wivesH802 besides my daughtersH1323, no manH376 is with us; seeH7200, GodH430 is witnessH5707 betwixt me and thee. 51And LabanH3837 saidH559 to JacobH3290, Behold this heapH1530, and behold the pillarH4676, which I have set betwixt me and thee. 52This heapH1530 be witnessH5707, and the pillarH4676 be witnessH5707, that I will not passH5674 over this heapH1530 to thee, and that thou shalt not passH5674 over this heapH1530 and this pillarH4676 unto me, for harmH7451. 53The GodH430 of AbrahamH85, and the GodH430 of NahorH5152, the GodH430 of their fatherH1, judgeH8199 betwixt us. And JacobH3290 sware by the FearH6343 of his fatherH1 IsaacH3327. 54And JacobH3290 offeredH2076 a sacrificeH2077 in the mountainH2022, and calledH7121 his brethren to eatH398 breadH3899: and they did eatH398 breadH3899, and tarried all night in the mountainH2022. 55And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.
