Genesis 24

American Standard Version

1And AbrahamH85 was oldH2204, and well stricken in age: and Jehovah had blessedH1288 AbrahamH85 in all things. 2And AbrahamH85 saidH559 unto his servantH5650, the elderH2205 of his houseH1004, that ruledH4910 over all that he had, PutH7760, I pray thee, thy handH3027 under my thighH3409: 3and I will make thee swearH7650 by Jehovah, the GodH430 of heavenH8064 and the GodH430 of the earthH776, that thou wilt not takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121 of the daughtersH1323 of the CanaanitesH3669, among whom I dwellH3427: 4but thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindredH4138, and takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121 IsaacH3327. 5And the servantH5650 saidH559 unto him, Peradventure the womanH802 will not be willingH14 to follow me unto this landH776: must I needs bringH3318 thy sonH1121 again unto the landH776 from whence thou camest? 6And AbrahamH85 saidH559 unto him, Beware thou that thou bringH7725 not my sonH1121 thither again. 7Jehovah, the GodH430 of heavenH8064, who tookH3947 me from my father’sH1 houseH1004, and from the landH776 of my nativity, and who spake unto me, and who sware unto me, sayingH559, Unto thy seedH2233 will I giveH5414 this landH776; he will sendH7971 his angelH4397 before thee, and thou shalt takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121 from thence. 8And if the womanH802 be not willingH14 to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oathH7621; onlyH7535 thou shalt not bringH7725 my sonH1121 thither again. 9And the servantH5650 putH7760 his handH3027 under the thighH3409 of AbrahamH85 his masterH113, and sware to him concerning this matterH1697.

10And the servantH5650 tookH3947 tenH6235 camelsH1581, of the camelsH1581 of his masterH113, and departed, having all goodly things of his master’sH113 in his handH3027: and he aroseH6965, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the cityH5892 of NahorH5152. 11And he made the camelsH1581 to kneel down without the cityH5892 by the wellH875 of waterH4325 at the timeH6256 of eveningH6153, the timeH6256 that women goH3318 out to drawH7579 waterH4325. 12And he saidH559, O Jehovah, the GodH430 of my masterH113 AbrahamH85, send me, I pray thee, good speed this dayH3117, and show kindness unto my masterH113 AbrahamH85. 13Behold, I am standingH5324 by the fountain of waterH4325; and the daughtersH1323 of the menH376 of the cityH5892 are comingH3318 out to drawH7579 waterH4325: 14and let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall sayH559, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drinkH8354; and she shall sayH559, DrinkH8354, and I will giveH8248 thy camelsH1581 drinkH8354 alsoH1571: let the same beH1961 she that thou hast appointedH3198 for thy servantH5650 IsaacH3327; and thereby shall I knowH3045 that thou hast showed kindness unto my masterH113. 15And it came to pass, before he had done speakingH1696, that, behold, RebekahH7259 came out, who wasH1961 bornH3205 to BethuelH1328 the sonH1121 of MilcahH4435, the wifeH802 of NahorH5152, Abraham’s brotherH251, with her pitcher upon her shoulderH7926. 16And the damsel was veryH3966 fair to look upon, a virginH1330, neither had any manH376 knownH3045 her: and she wentH5927 downH3381 to the fountain, and filledH4390 her pitcher, and cameH5927 up. 17And the servantH5650 ranH7323 to meet her, and saidH559, Give me to drink, I pray thee, a littleH4592 waterH4325 from thy pitcher. 18And she saidH559, DrinkH8354, my lordH113: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her handH3027, and gave him drinkH8354. 19And when she had done givingH8248 him drinkH8354, she saidH559, I will drawH7579 for thy camelsH1581 alsoH1571, until they have done drinkingH8354. 20And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ranH7323 againH5750 unto the wellH875 to drawH7579, and drewH7579 for all his camelsH1581. 21And the manH376 looked stedfastly on her, holding his peace, to knowH3045 whether Jehovah had madeH3045 his journeyH1870 prosperous or not. 22And it came to pass, as the camelsH1581 had done drinkingH8354, that the manH376 tookH3947 a golden ringH5141 of half a shekel weightH4948, and twoH8147 braceletsH6781 for her handsH3027 of tenH6235 shekels weightH4948 of goldH2091, 23and saidH559, Whose daughterH1323 art thou? tellH5046 me, I pray thee. Is there room in thy father’sH1 houseH1004 for us to lodge in? 24And she saidH559 unto him, I am the daughterH1323 of BethuelH1328 the sonH1121 of MilcahH4435, whom she bare unto NahorH5152. 25She saidH559 moreover unto him, We have both strawH8401 and provender enough, and roomH4725 to lodge in. 26And the manH376 bowedH7812 his head, and worshipped Jehovah. 27And he saidH559, BlessedH1288 be Jehovah, the GodH430 of my masterH113 AbrahamH85, who hath not forsaken his lovingkindness and his truthH571 toward my masterH113: as for me, Jehovah hath ledH5148 me in the wayH1870 to the houseH1004 of my master’sH113 brethren.

28And the damsel ranH7323, and toldH5046 her mother’sH517 houseH1004 according to these wordsH1697. 29And RebekahH7259 had a brotherH251, and his nameH8034 was LabanH3837: and LabanH3837 ranH7323 out unto the manH376, unto the fountain. 30And it cameH935 to pass, when he sawH7200 the ringH5141, and the braceletsH6781 upon his sister’sH269 handsH3027, and when he heardH8085 the wordsH1697 of RebekahH7259 his sisterH269, sayingH559, ThusH3541 spake the manH376 unto me; that he cameH935 unto the manH376; and, behold, he wasH1961 standingH5975 by the camelsH1581 at the fountain. 31And he saidH559, ComeH935 in, thou blessedH1288 of Jehovah; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the houseH1004, and room for the camelsH1581. 32And the manH376 cameH935 into the houseH1004, and he ungirded the camelsH1581; and he gaveH5414 strawH8401 and provender for the camelsH1581, and waterH4325 to washH7364 his feetH7272 and the feetH7272 of the menH376 that were with him. 33And there was set food before him to eatH398: but he saidH559, I will not eatH398, until I have told mine errand. And he saidH559, SpeakH1696 on. 34And he saidH559, I am Abraham’s servantH5650. 35And Jehovah hath blessedH1288 my masterH113 greatly; and he is becomeH1431 greatH1431: and he hath givenH5414 him flocksH6629 and herdsH1241, and silverH3701 and goldH2091, and men-servants and maid-servants, and camelsH1581 and asses. 36And SarahH8283 my master’sH113 wifeH802 bare a sonH1121 to my masterH113 whenH834 she was old: and unto him hath he givenH5414 all that he hath. 37And my masterH113 madeH7650 me swearH7650, sayingH559, Thou shalt not takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121 of the daughtersH1323 of the CanaanitesH3669, in whose landH776 I dwellH3427: 38but thou shalt go unto my father’sH1 houseH1004, and to my kindred, and takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121. 39And I saidH559 unto my masterH113, Peradventure the womanH802 will not follow me. 40And he saidH559 unto me, Jehovah, before whom I walkH1980, will sendH7971 his angelH4397 with thee, and prosperH6743 thy wayH1870; and thou shalt takeH3947 a wifeH802 for my sonH1121 of my kindred, and of my father’sH1 houseH1004: 41thenH227 shalt thou beH1961 clear from my oathH423, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they giveH5414 her not to thee, thou shalt beH1961 clear from my oathH423. 42And I cameH935 this dayH3117 unto the fountain, and saidH559, O Jehovah, the GodH430 of my masterH113 AbrahamH85, if now thou do prosperH6743 my wayH1870 which I goH1980: 43behold, I am standingH5324 by the fountain of waterH4325; and let it come to pass, that the maiden that cometh forthH3318 to drawH7579, to whom I shall sayH559, GiveH8248 me, I pray thee, a littleH4592 waterH4325 from thy pitcher to drinkH8248; 44and she shall sayH559 to me, Both drinkH8354 thou, and I will alsoH1571 drawH7579 for thy camelsH1581: let the same be the womanH802 whom Jehovah hath appointedH3198 for my master’sH113 sonH1121. 45And before I had done speakingH1696 in my heartH3820, behold, RebekahH7259 cameH3318 forthH3318 with her pitcher on her shoulderH7926; and she wentH3318 downH3381 unto the fountain, and drewH7579: and I saidH559 unto her, Let me drinkH8248, I pray thee. 46And she madeH4116 hasteH4116, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and saidH559, DrinkH8354, and I will giveH8248 thy camelsH1581 drinkH8354 alsoH1571: so I drankH8354, and she madeH4116 the camelsH1581 drinkH8354 alsoH1571. 47And I askedH7592 her, and saidH559, Whose daughterH1323 art thou? And she saidH559, The daughterH1323 of BethuelH1328, Nahor’s sonH1121, whom MilcahH4435 bare unto him: and I putH7760 the ringH5141 upon her noseH639, and the braceletsH6781 upon her handsH3027. 48And I bowedH7812 my head, and worshipped Jehovah, and blessedH1288 Jehovah, the GodH430 of my masterH113 AbrahamH85, who had ledH5148 me in the right wayH1870 to takeH3947 my master’sH113 brother’sH251 daughterH1323 for his sonH1121. 49And nowH6258 if ye will deal kindly and truly with my masterH113, tellH5046 me: and if not, tellH5046 me; that I may turnH6437 to the rightH3225 handH3225, or to the left.

50Then LabanH3837 and BethuelH1328 answered and saidH559, The thingH1697 proceedeth from Jehovah: we cannot speakH1696 unto thee badH7451 or goodH2896. 51Behold, RebekahH7259 is before thee, takeH3947 her, and go, and let her beH1961 thy master’sH113 son’sH1121 wifeH802, as Jehovah hath spokenH1696. 52And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servantH5650 heardH8085 their wordsH1697, he bowedH7812 himself downH7812 to the earthH776 unto Jehovah. 53And the servantH5650 broughtH3318 forthH3318 jewels of silverH3701, and jewels of goldH2091, and raiment, and gaveH5414 them to RebekahH7259: he gaveH5414 also to her brotherH251 and to her motherH517 preciousH4030 thingsH3627. 54And they did eatH398 and drinkH8354, he and the menH376 that were with him, and tarried all night; and they roseH6965 up in the morningH1242, and he saidH559, SendH7971 me awayH7971 unto my masterH113. 55And her brotherH251 and her motherH517 saidH559, Let the damsel abide with us a few daysH3117, at the least tenH6218; after that she shall go. 56And he saidH559 unto them, Hinder me not, seeing Jehovah hath prospered my wayH1870; sendH7971 me awayH7971 that I may goH7971 to my masterH113. 57And they saidH559, We will callH7121 the damsel, and inquire at her mouthH6310. 58And they calledH7121 RebekahH7259, and saidH559 unto her, Wilt thou go with this manH376? And she saidH559, I will go. 59And they sentH7971 awayH7971 RebekahH7259 their sisterH269, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servantH5650, and his menH376. 60And they blessedH1288 RebekahH7259, and saidH559 unto her, Our sisterH269, beH1961 thou the mother of thousandsH505 of tenH7233 thousandsH505, and let thy seedH2233 possessH3423 the gateH8179 of those that hateH8130 them.

61And RebekahH7259 aroseH6965, and her damsels, and they rodeH7392 upon the camelsH1581, and followed the manH376: and the servantH5650 tookH3947 RebekahH7259, and went his way. 62And IsaacH3327 cameH935 from the way of Beer-lahai-roiH883; for he dweltH3427 in the landH776 of the SouthH5045. 63And IsaacH3327 wentH3318 out to meditate in the fieldH7704 at the eventide: and he liftedH5375 up his eyesH5869, and sawH7200, and, behold, there were camelsH1581 comingH935. 64And RebekahH7259 liftedH5375 up her eyesH5869, and when she sawH7200 IsaacH3327, she alighted from the camelH1581. 65And she saidH559 unto the servantH5650, What manH376 is this that walketh in the fieldH7704 to meet us? And the servantH5650 saidH559, It is my masterH113: and she tookH3947 her veilH6809, and coveredH3680 herself. 66And the servantH5650 told IsaacH3327 all the thingsH1697 that he had done. 67And IsaacH3327 broughtH935 her into his motherH517 Sarah’s tentH168, and tookH3947 RebekahH7259, and she becameH1961 his wifeH802; and he lovedH157 her. And IsaacH3327 wasH1961 comfortedH5162 after his mother’sH517 death.
