Isaiah 40
New American Standard Bible 1995
The Greatness of God
1“1ComfortH5162, O comfortH5162 My peopleH5971,” saysH559 your GodH430.2“2SpeakH1696 3kindlyH3820 to JerusalemH3389; And callH7121 out to her, that her 45warfareH6635 has endedH4390, That her 67iniquityH5771 has been removedH7521, That she has receivedH3947 of the Lord’sH3068 handH3027 8DoubleH3718 for allH3605 her sinsH2403.”
39A voiceH6963 10is callingH7121, “11ClearH6437 the wayH1870 for the LordH3068 in the wildernessH4057; MakeH3474 smoothH3474 in the desertH6160 a highwayH4546 for our GodH430.4Let everyH3605 valleyH1516 be liftedH5375 up, And everyH3605 mountainH2022 and hillH1389 be madeH8213 lowH8213; And let the roughH6121 groundH6121 becomeH1961 a plainH4334, And the ruggedH7406 terrainH7406 a broadH1237 valleyH1237;512Then the 13gloryH3519 of the LordH3068 will be revealedH1540, And 14allH3605 fleshH1320 will seeH7200 it togetherH3164; For the 15mouthH6310 of the LordH3068 has spokenH1696.”6A voiceH6963 saysH559, “CallH7121 out.” Then 16he answeredH559, “WhatH4100 shall I callH7121 out?” 17AllH3605 fleshH1320 is grassH2682, and allH3605 its 18lovelinessH2617 is like the flowerH6731 of the fieldH7704.7The 19grassH2682 withersH3001, the flowerH6731 fadesH5034, 20WhenH3588 the 21breathH7307 of the LordH3068 blowsH5380 upon it; SurelyH403 the peopleH5971 are grassH2682.8The grassH2682 withersH3001, the flowerH6731 fadesH5034, But 22the wordH1697 of our GodH430 standsH6965 foreverH5769.
9GetH5927 yourself up on a 23highH1364 mountainH2022, O ZionH6726, bearerH1319 of 24good newsH1319, LiftH7311 up your voiceH6963 mightilyH3581, O JerusalemH3389, bearerH1319 of good newsH1319; LiftH7311 it up, do not fearH3372. SayH559 to the 25citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, “26HereH2009 is your GodH430!”10BeholdH2009, the LordH136 27GodH3068 will comeH935 28with mightH2389, With His 29armH2220 rulingH4910 for Him. BeholdH2009, His 30rewardH7939 is with Him And His recompenseH6468 beforeH6440 Him.11Like a shepherdH7462 He will 31tendH7462 His flockH5739, In His armH2220 He will gatherH6908 the lambsH2924 And carryH5375 them in His bosomH2436; He will gently leadH5095 the nursingH5763 ewes.
12WhoH4310 has 32measuredH4058 the 33watersH4325 in the hollowH8168 of His handH8168, And markedH8505 offH8505 the heavensH8064 by the 34spanH2239, And 35calculatedH3557 the dustH6083 of the earthH776 by the measureH7991, And weighedH8254 the mountainsH2022 in a balanceH6425 And the hillsH1389 in a pair of scalesH3976?1336WhoH4310 has 37directedH8505 the SpiritH7307 of the LordH3068, Or as His 38counselorH376H6098 has informedH3045 Him?1439With whomH4310 did He consultH3289 and who 40gaveH995 Him understandingH995? And who taughtH3925 Him in the pathH734 of justiceH4941 and taughtH3925 Him knowledgeH1847 And informedH3045 Him of the wayH1870 of understandingH8394?15BeholdH2005, the 41nationsH1471 are like a dropH4752 from a bucketH1805, And are regardedH2803 as a speckH7834 of 42dustH7834 on the scalesH3976; BeholdH2005, He liftsH5190 up the 43islandsH339 like fineH1851 dustH1851.16Even LebanonH3844 is not enoughH1767 to burnH1197, NorH369 its 44beastsH2421 enoughH1767 for a burntH5930 offeringH5930.1745AllH3605 the nationsH1471 are as nothingH369 beforeH5048 Him, They are regardedH2803 by Him as lessH657 thanH4480 nothingH657 and 46meaninglessH8414.
1847To whomH4310 then will you likenH1819 GodH410? Or whatH4100 likenessH1823 will you compareH6186 with Him?19As for the 4849idolH6459, a craftsmanH2796 castsH5258 it, A goldsmithH6884 50platesH7554 it with goldH2091, And a silversmithH6884 fashions chainsH7577 of silverH3701.20He who is too impoverishedH5532 for such an offeringH8641 SelectsH977 a 51treeH6086 that does not rotH7537; He seeksH1245 out for himself a skillfulH2450 craftsmanH2796 To 52prepareH3559 53an idolH6459 that 54will not totterH4131.
2155Do you not knowH3045? Have you not heardH8085? Has it not been declaredH5046 to you from the beginningH7218? Have you not understoodH995 56from the foundationsH4144 of the earthH776?22It is He who 57sitsH3427 aboveH5921 the 5859circleH2329 of the earthH776, And its inhabitantsH3427 are like 60grasshoppersH2284, Who 61stretchesH5186 out the heavensH8064 like a 62curtainH1852 And spreadsH4969 them out like a 63tentH168 to dwellH3427 in.23He it is who reducesH5414 64rulersH7336 to nothingH369, Who 65makesH6213 the judgesH8199 of the earthH776 66meaninglessH8414.2467ScarcelyH1077H637 have they been plantedH5193, 68ScarcelyH1077H637 have they been sownH2232, 69ScarcelyH1077H637 has their stockH1503 takenH8327 rootH8327 in the earthH776, But He merelyH1571 blowsH5398 on them, and they witherH3001, And the 70stormH5591 carriesH5375 them away like stubbleH7179.25“71To whomH4310 then will you likenH1819 Me That I would be his equalH7737?” saysH559 the HolyH6918 OneH6918.2672LiftH5375 up your eyesH5869 on highH4791 And seeH7200 73whoH4310 has createdH1254 theseH428 stars, The 74One who leadsH3318 forthH3318 their hostH6635 by numberH4557, He callsH7121 them allH3605 by nameH8034; BecauseH4480 of the 75greatnessH7230 of His mightH202 and the 76strengthH533 of His powerH3581, 77Not oneH376 of them is missingH5737.
2778WhyH4100 do you sayH559, O JacobH3290, and assertH1696, O IsraelH3478, “My wayH1870 is 79hiddenH5641 from the LordH3068, And the 80justiceH4941 due me 81escapesH5674 the noticeH5674 of 82my GodH430”?2883Do you not knowH3045? Have you not heardH8085? The 84EverlastingH5769 GodH430, the LordH3068, the CreatorH1254 of the endsH7098 of the earthH776 Does not becomeH3286 wearyH3286 or tiredH3021. His understandingH8394 is 85inscrutableH369H2714.29He givesH5414 strengthH3581 to the 86wearyH3287, And to him who lacksH369 mightH202 He 87increasesH7235 powerH6109.30Though 88youthsH5288 growH3286 wearyH3286 and tiredH3021, And vigorousH970 89youngH970 menH970 stumbleH3782 badlyH3782,31Yet those who 90waitH6960 for the LordH3068 Will 91gainH2498 newH2498 strengthH3581; They will 9293mountH5927 up with 94wingsH83 like eaglesH5404, They will runH7323 and not getH3021 tiredH3021, They will walkH1980 and not becomeH3286 wearyH3286.
