Hezekiah Seeks Isaiah’s Help

1And 1when KingH4428 HezekiahH2396 heardH8085 it, he toreH7167 his clothesH899, coveredH3680 himself with sackclothH8242 and enteredH935 the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. 2Then he sentH7971 2EliakimH471 whoH834 was overH5921 the householdH1004 with 3ShebnaH7644 the scribeH5613 and the eldersH2205 of the priestsH3548, coveredH3680 with sackclothH8242, to 4IsaiahH3470 the prophetH5030, the sonH1121 of AmozH531. 3They saidH559 to him, “ThusH3541 saysH559 HezekiahH2396, ‘ThisH2088 dayH3117 is a 5dayH3117 of distressH6869, rebukeH8433 and rejectionH5007; for 6childrenH1121 have comeH935 to birthH4866, and thereH369 is noH369 strengthH3581 to 7deliverH3205. 4PerhapsH194 the LordH3068 your GodH430 will hearH8085 the wordsH1697 of RabshakehH7262, whomH834 his masterH113 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 has sentH7971 to 8reproachH2778 the livingH2416 GodH430, and will rebukeH3198 the wordsH1697 whichH834 the LordH3068 your GodH430 has heardH8085. Therefore, offerH5375 a prayerH8605 for 9the remnantH7611 that is leftH4672.’”

5So the servantsH5650 of KingH4428 HezekiahH2396 cameH935 to IsaiahH3470. 6IsaiahH3470 saidH559 to them, “ThusH3541 you shall sayH559 to your masterH113, ‘ThusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068, “10Do not be afraidH3372 becauseH4480H6440 of the wordsH1697 that you have heardH8085, with whichH834 the servantsH5288 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 have blasphemedH1442 Me. 7BeholdH2009, I will putH5414 a spiritH7307 in him so that he will 11hearH8085 a rumorH8052 and 12returnH7725 to his own landH776. And I will make him fallH5307 by the swordH2719 in his own landH776.”’”

8Then RabshakehH7262 returnedH7725 and foundH4672 the king of AssyriaH804 fightingH3898 againstH5921 13LibnahH3841, for he had heardH8085 that 14the king had leftH5265 15LachishH3923. 9When he 16heardH8085 them sayH559 concerningH5921 TirhakahH8640 kingH4428 of 1718CushH3568, “He has comeH3318 out to fightH3898 againstH854 you,” and when he heardH8085 it he sentH7971 messengersH4397 to HezekiahH2396, sayingH559, 10“ThusH3541 you shall sayH559 to HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of 19JudahH3063, ‘20Do not let your GodH430 in whomH834 you trustH982 deceiveH5378 you, sayingH559, “JerusalemH3389 will not be givenH5414 into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804.” 1121BeholdH2009, you have heardH8085 whatH834 the kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 have doneH6213 to allH3605 the landsH776, destroyingH2763 them completelyH2763. So will you be 22sparedH5337? 12Did the godsH430 of 23those nationsH1471 whichH834 my fathersH1 have destroyedH7843 deliverH5337 them, even 24GozanH1470 and 25HaranH2771 and RezephH7530 and the sonsH1121 of EdenH5729 whoH834 were in TelassarH8515? 13WhereH346 is the kingH4428 of HamathH2574, the kingH4428 of ArpadH774, the kingH4428 of the cityH5892 of SepharvaimH5617, and of HenaH2012 and IvvahH5755?’”

Hezekiah’s Prayer in the Temple

14Then HezekiahH2396 tookH3947 the 26letterH5612 from the handH3027 of the messengersH4397 and readH7121 it, and he wentH5927 up to the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 and 27spreadH6566 it out beforeH6440 the LordH3068. 15HezekiahH2396 prayedH6419 to the LordH3068 sayingH559, 16“O LordH3068 of hostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, 28who is enthronedH3427 above the cherubimH3742, You are the 29GodH430, You aloneH905, of allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 of the earthH776. 30You have madeH6213 heavenH8064 and earthH776. 1731InclineH5186 Your earH241, O LordH3068, and hearH8085; openH6491 Your eyesH5869, O LordH3068, and seeH7200; and 32listenH8085 to allH3605 the wordsH1697 of SennacheribH5576, who sentH7971 them to 33reproachH2778 the livingH2416 GodH430. 18TrulyH551, O LordH3068, the 34kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 have devastatedH2717 allH3605 the countriesH776 and their landsH776, 19and have castH5414 their godsH430 into the fireH784, for they were not godsH430 but the 35workH4639 of men’sH120 handsH3027, woodH6086 and stoneH68. So they have 36destroyedH6 them. 20NowH6258, O LordH3068 our GodH430, 37deliverH3467 us from his handH3027 that 38allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 of the earthH776 may knowH3045 that You aloneH905, LordH3068, 39are GodH430.”

God Answers through Isaiah

21Then 40IsaiahH3470 the sonH1121 of AmozH531 sentH7971 word to HezekiahH2396, sayingH559, “ThusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, ‘BecauseH834 you have prayedH6419 to Me aboutH413 SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, 22thisH2088 is the wordH1697 that the LordH3068 has spokenH1696 againstH5921 him: “She has despisedH959 you and mockedH3932 you, The 41virginH1330 42daughterH1323 of ZionH6726; She has 43shakenH5128 her headH7218 behindH310 you, The daughterH1323 of JerusalemH3389!23WhomH4310 have you 44reproachedH2778 and blasphemedH1442? And againstH5921 whomH4310 have you raisedH7311 your voiceH6963 And 45haughtilyH4791 46liftedH5375 up your eyesH5869? AgainstH413 the 47HolyH6918 OneH6918 of IsraelH3478!24ThroughH3027 your servantsH5650 you have reproachedH2778 the LordH136, And you have saidH559, ‘With my manyH7230 chariotsH7393 I cameH5927 up to the heightsH4791 of the mountainsH2022, To the remotestH3411 partsH3411 of 48LebanonH3844; And I cutH3772 downH3772 its tallH6967 49cedarsH730 and its choiceH4004 cypressesH1265. And I will goH935 to its 50highestH7093 peakH7093, its thickestH3759 51forestH3293.25I dugH6979 wells and drankH8354 watersH4325, And 52with the soleH3709 of my feetH6471 I driedH2717 up AllH3605 the riversH2975 of 53EgyptH4693.’2654Have you not heardH8085? LongH7350 agoH7350 I didH6213 it, From ancientH6924 timesH3117H6924 I 55plannedH3335 it. NowH6258 56I have broughtH935 it to passH935, That 57you should turnH7582 fortifiedH1219 citiesH5892 into 58ruinousH5327 heapsH1530.27Therefore their inhabitantsH3427 were shortH7116 of strengthH3027, They were dismayedH2865 and putH954 to shameH954; They were as the 59vegetationH6212 of the fieldH7704 and as the greenH3419 herbH1877, As 60grassH2682 on the housetopsH1406 61is scorchedH7711 beforeH6440 it is grownH7054 up.28But I 62knowH3045 your sittingH3427 downH3427 And your goingH3318 out and your comingH935 in And your ragingH7264 againstH413 Me.29BecauseH3282 of your ragingH7264 againstH413 Me And because your 6364arroganceH7600 has comeH5927 up to My earsH241, Therefore I will putH7760 My 65hookH2397 in your noseH639 And My 66bridleH4964 in your lipsH8193, And I will turnH7725 you backH7725 67by the wayH1870 whichH834 you cameH935.

30“Then thisH2088 shall be the signH226 for you: 68you will eatH398 this yearH8141 whatH5599 69growsH5599 of itself, in the secondH8145 yearH8141 whatH5501 springsH5501 from the same, and in the thirdH7992 yearH8141 sowH2232, reapH7114, plantH5193 vineyardsH3754 and eatH398 their fruitH6529. 31The 70survivingH7604 71remnantH7604 of the houseH1004 of JudahH3063 will againH3254 72take rootH8328 downwardH4295 and bearH6213 fruitH6529 upwardH4605. 32For out of JerusalemH3389 will goH3318 forthH3318 a 73remnantH7611 and out of MountH2022 ZionH6726 74survivorsH6413. The 75zealH7068 of the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 will performH6213 thisH2088.”’

33“ThereforeH3651, thusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068 concerningH413 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, ‘He will not comeH935 to thisH2088 cityH5892 or shootH3384 an arrowH2671 thereH8033; and he will not comeH6923 beforeH6923 it with a shieldH4043, orH3808 throwH8210 up a 76siegeH5550 rampH5550 againstH5921 it. 3477By the wayH1870 that he cameH935, by the same he will returnH7725, and he will not comeH935 to thisH2088 cityH5892,’ declaresH5002 the LordH3068. 35‘For I will 78defendH1598 thisH2088 cityH5892 to saveH3467 it 79for My own sakeH4616 and for My servantH5650 David’sH1732 sakeH4616.’”

Assyrians Destroyed

36Then the 80angelH4397 of the LordH3068 wentH3318 out and struckH5221 185,000H3967H8084H2568H505 in the campH4264 of the AssyriansH804; and when 81men aroseH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242, beholdH2009, allH3605 of these were 82deadH4191H6297. 37So SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 departedH5265 and 83returnedH7725 home and livedH3427 at 84NinevehH5210. 38It cameH1961 about as he was worshipingH7812 in the houseH1004 of NisrochH5268 his godH430, that AdrammelechH152 and SharezerH8272 his sonsH1121 killedH5221 him with the swordH2719; and they escapedH4422 into the landH776 of 85AraratH780. And 86EsarhaddonH634 his sonH1121 becameH4427 kingH4427 in his placeH8478.
