Mourning and Burial for Jacob
1Then JosephH3130 fellH5307 uponH5921 his father’sH1 faceH6440, weptH1058 over himH5921, and kissedH5401 him.
2And JosephH3130 directedH6680 the physiciansH7495 in his serviceH5650 to embalmH2590 his fatherH1 IsraelH3478. So theyH7495 embalmed himH2590, 3taking the fortyH705 daysH3117 required to completeH4390 the embalmingH2590. And the EgyptiansH4713 mournedH1058 for him seventyH7657 daysH3117.
4When the daysH3117 of mourningH1068 had passedH5674, JosephH3130 saidH1696 toH413 Pharaoh’sH6547H559 courtH1004, “IfH518 I have foundH4672 favorH2580 in your eyesH5869, pleaseH4994 tellH1696H4994H241 Pharaoh thatH6547H559 5my fatherH1 made me swear an oathH7650 when he saidH559H2009, ‘IH595 am about to dieH4191. You must bury meH6912H8033 in the tombH6913 thatH834 I dugH3738 for myself in the landH776 of CanaanH3667.’ NowH6258 let me goH5927H4994 and buryH6912 my fatherH1, and then returnH7725.”
6PharaohH6547 repliedH559, “Go upH5927 and buryH6912 your fatherH1, asH834 he made you swearH7650 to do.”
7Then JosephH3130 wentH5927 to buryH6912 his fatherH1, and allH3605 the servantsH5650 of PharaohH6547 accompaniedH5927 himH854—the eldersH2205 of Pharaoh’s householdH1004 and allH3605 the eldersH2205 of the landH776 of EgyptH4714— 8along with allH3605 of Joseph’sH3130 householdH1004, and his brothersH251, and his father’sH1 householdH1004. OnlyH7535 their childrenH2945 and flocksH6629 and herdsH1241 were leftH5800 in GoshenH776H1657.
9ChariotsH7393 andH1571 horsemenH6571 alikeH1571 went upH5927 with himH5973, and it wasH1961 an exceedinglyH3966 largeH3515 processionH4264. 10When they reachedH935H5704 the threshing floorH1637 of AtadH329, whichH834 is acrossH5676 the JordanH3383, they lamentedH5594H8033 and wailedH4553 loudlyH1419H3515H3966, and Joseph mournedH6213H60 for his fatherH1 sevenH7651 daysH3117.
11When the CanaanitesH3669 of the landH3427H776 sawH7200 the mourningH60H1637 at the threshing floor of AtadH329, they saidH559, “ThisH2088 is a solemnH3515 ceremony of mourningH60 by the EgyptiansH4714.” ThusH5921H3651 the placeH834 acrossH5676 the JordanH3383 is calledH7121H8034 Abel-mizraimH67.1
12So Jacob’s sonsH1121 didH6213 asH834 he had charged themH6680. 13TheyH1121 carriedH5375 himH853 to the landH776 of CanaanH3667 and buriedH6912 himH853 in the caveH4631 at MachpelahH4375 in the fieldH7704 nearH5921H6440 MamreH4471, whichH834 AbrahamH85 had purchasedH7069 from EphronH6085 the HittiteH2850 as a burialH6913H854 siteH272.
14AfterH310H6912 JosephH3130 had buriedH6912 his fatherH1, he returnedH7725 to EgyptH4714H1931 with his brothersH251 and allH3605 who had goneH5927 with himH854 to bury his fatherH1.
Joseph Comforts His Brothers
15When Joseph’sH3130 brothersH251 sawH7200 thatH3588 their fatherH1 was deadH4191, they saidH559, “What ifH3863 JosephH3130 bears a grudgeH7852? Then he will surely repayH7725 us for allH3605 the evilH7451 thatH834 we didH1580 to himH853.”
16So they sent wordH6680 toH413 JosephH3130, sayingH559, “BeforeH6440 he diedH4194H559, your fatherH1 commandedH6680, 17‘This is whatH3541 you are to sayH559 to JosephH3130: I beg youH577, pleaseH4994 forgiveH5375 the transgressionH6588 and sinH2403 of your brothersH251, forH3588 they didH1580 you wrongH7451.’ So nowH6258, Joseph, pleaseH4994 forgiveH5375 the transgressionH6588 of the servantsH5650 of the GodH430 of your fatherH1.”
When their messageH1696 came to himH413, JosephH3130 weptH1058. 18His brothersH251 alsoH1571 came to himH1980, bowed downH5307 before himH6440, and saidH559H2009, “We are your slavesH5650!”
19But JosephH3130 repliedH559H413, “Do notH408 be afraidH3372H3588. Am IH589 in the place ofH8478 GodH430? 20As for youH859, what you intendedH2803 against meH5921 for evilH7451, GodH430 intendedH2803 for goodH2896, in order toH4616 accomplishH6213 a dayH3117 like thisH2088—to preserve the livesH2421 of manyH7227 peopleH5971. 21ThereforeH6258 do notH408 be afraidH3372. IH595 will provide forH3557 youH853 and your little onesH2945.” So Joseph reassuredH5162 his brothers and spokeH1696 kindly to themH5921H3820.
The Death of Joseph
22Now JosephH3130 and his father’sH1 householdH1004 remainedH3427 in EgyptH4714H1931, and JosephH3130 livedH2421 to the ageH8141 of 110H3967H6235. 23HeH3130 sawH7200 Ephraim’sH669 sonsH1121 to the third generationH8029, and indeedH1571 the sonsH1121 of MachirH4353 sonH1121 of ManassehH4519 were brought upH32052 onH5921 Joseph’sH3130 kneesH1290.
24Then JosephH3130 saidH559 toH413 his brothersH251, “IH595 am about to dieH4191, but GodH430 will surely visitH6485 youH853 and bring you upH5927 fromH4480 thisH2063 landH776 toH413 the landH776 He promised on oathH7650 to AbrahamH85, IsaacH3327, and JacobH3290.” 25And JosephH3130 made the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 take an oathH7650 and saidH559, “GodH430 will surely attend toH6485 youH853, and then you must carryH5927 my bonesH6106 up from this placeH2088.”
26So JosephH3130 diedH4191 at the ageH1121 of 110H3967H6235H8141. And they embalmedH2590 his body and placed itH3455 in a coffinH727 in EgyptH4714.
