Jacob’s Fear of Esau

1Now as Jacobוְיַעֲקֹ֖בve.ya.'a.KoH3290wentH1980on his wayלְדַרְכּ֑וֹle.dar.KoH1870,the angelsמַלְאֲכֵ֥יmal.'a.KheiH4397of Godאֱלֹהִֽים׃'E.lo.HimH430metוַיִּפְגְּעוּ־vai.yif.ge.'u-H6293him.

2JacobH3290saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559whenH3512he sawרָאָ֔םra.'AmH7200them, “Thisזֶ֑הZehH2088is God’sH430campמַחֲנֵ֥הma.cha.NehH4264.”So he namedוַיִּקְרָ֛א שֵֽׁם־vai.yik.Ra' shem-H7121 H8034that placeהַמָּק֥וֹםha.ma.KomH4725Mahanaimמַֽחֲנָֽיִם׃ פMa.cha.Na.yimH4266.

3Then JacobH3290sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֨חvai.yish.LachH7971messengersמַלְאָכִים֙mal.'a.KhimH4397beforeלְפָנָ֔יוle.fa.NavH6440him to his brotherאָחִ֑יו'a.ChivH251Esauעֵשָׂ֖ו'e.SavH6215in the landאַ֥רְצָה'Ar.tzahH776ofSeirשֵׂעִ֖ירse.'IrH8165, thecountryשְׂדֵ֥הse.DehH7704ofEdomH112.

4He also commandedוַיְצַ֤וvay.TzavH6680them sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, “Thusכֹּ֣הkohH3541you shall sayתֹאמְר֔וּןtom.RunH559to my lordלַֽאדֹנִ֖יla.do.NiH113EsauH6215: ‘Thusכֹּ֤הkohH3541saysאָמַר֙'a.MarH559your servantעַבְדְּךָ֣'av.de.KhaH5650JacobH3290, “I have sojournedגַּ֔רְתִּיGar.tiH1481with Labanלָבָ֣ןla.VanH3837, andstayedוָאֵחַ֖רva.'e.CharH309untilעַד־'ad-H5704nowעָֽתָּה׃'A.tahH6258;

5I haveוַֽיְהִי־vay.hi-H1961oxenשׁ֣וֹרShorH7794and donkeysוַחֲמ֔וֹרva.cha.MorH2543andflocksצֹ֖אןtzonH6629and maleוְעֶ֣בֶדve.'E.vedH5650and femaleוְשִׁפְחָ֑הve.shif.ChahH8198servantsעַבְדְּךָ֣'av.de.KhaH5650 H8198;and I have sentוָֽאֶשְׁלְחָה֙va.'esh.le.ChahH7971to tellלְהַגִּ֣ידle.ha.GidH5046my lordH113,that I may findלִמְצֹא־lim.tzo'-H4672favorחֵ֖ןchenH2580in your sightבְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃be.'ei.Nei.khaH5869.”’”

6The messengersהַמַּלְאָכִ֔יםha.mal.'a.KhimH4397returnedוַיָּשֻׁ֙בוּ֙vai.ya.Shu.vuH7725to Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “We cameבָּ֤אנוּBa.nuH935to your brotherאָחִ֙יךָ֙'a.Chi.khaH251Esauעֵשָׂ֔ו'e.SavH6215,and furthermoreוְגַם֙ve.GamH1571he is comingהֹלֵ֣ךְho.LekhH1980to meetלִקְרָֽאתְךָ֔lik.ra.te.ChaH7122you, and fourוְאַרְבַּע־ve.'ar.ba'-H702hundredמֵא֥וֹתme.'otH3967menאִ֖ישׁ'ishH376are with him.”

7Then JacobH3290wasgreatlyמְאֹ֖דme.'OdH3966afraidוַיִּירָ֧אvai.yi.Ra'H3372and distressedH6887;and he dividedוַיַּ֜חַץvai.Ya.chatzH2673the peopleהָעָ֣םha.'AmH5971whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834were with him, and the flocksהַצֹּ֧אןha.TzonH6629and the herdsהַבָּקָ֛רha.ba.KarH1241and the camelsוְהַגְּמַלִּ֖יםve.hag.ge.ma.LimH1581,into twoלִשְׁנֵ֥יlish.NeiH8147companiesמַחֲנֽוֹת׃ma.cha.NotH4264;

8for he saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Ifאִם־'im-H518Esauעֵשָׂ֛ו'e.SavH6215comesיָב֥וֹאya.Vo'H935to the oneהָאַחַ֖תha.'a.ChatH259companyH4264andattacksוְהִכָּ֑הוּve.hi.Ka.huH5221it, then the companyH4264which is leftהַנִּשְׁאָ֖רha.nish.'ArH7604will escapeלִפְלֵיטָֽה׃lif.lei.TahH6413.”

9Jacobיַעֲקֹב֒ya.'a.KoH3290saidH559, “OGodאֱלֹהֵי֙'e.lo.HeiH430of my fatherאָבִ֣י'a.ViH1Abrahamאַבְרָהָ֔ם'av.ra.HamH85and Godוֵאלֹהֵ֖יve.lo.HeiH430of my fatherאָבִ֣י'a.ViH1Isaacיִצְחָ֑קyitz.ChakH3327, O Lordיְהוָ֞הYah.wehH3068,who saidH559to me, ‘Returnשׁ֧וּבshuvH7725to your countryלְאַרְצְךָ֛le.'ar.tze.KhaH776and to your relativesוּלְמוֹלַדְתְּךָ֖u.le.mo.lad.te.KhaH4138, and I willprosperוְאֵיטִ֥יבָהve.'ei.Ti.vahH3190you,’

10I am unworthyקָטֹ֜נְתִּיka.To.ne.tiH6994of allמִכֹּ֤לmi.KolH3605the lovingkindnessהַחֲסָדִים֙ha.cha.sa.DimH2617and of allוּמִכָּל־u.mi.kol-H3605thefaithfulnessהָ֣אֱמֶ֔תha.'e.MetH571whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834You have shownעָשִׂ֖יתָ'a.Si.taH6213to Your servantעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ'av.De.khaH5650;for with my staffבְמַקְלִ֗יve.mak.LiH4731onlyI crossedעָבַ֙רְתִּי֙'a.Var.tiH5674thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּ֣ןhai.yar.DenH3383,and nowוְעַתָּ֥הve.'a.TahH6258I have becomeהָיִ֖יתִיha.Yi.tiH1961twoלִשְׁנֵ֥יlish.NeiH8147companiesמַחֲנֽוֹת׃ma.cha.NotH4264.

11Deliverהַצִּילֵ֥נִיha.tzi.Le.niH5337me, I prayנָ֛אna'H4994,from the handמִיַּ֥דmi.YadH3027of my brotherאָחִ֖י'a.ChiH251,from the handמִיַּ֣דmi.YadH3027of Esauעֵשָׂ֑ו'e.SavH6215;for I fearH3372him, that he will comeיָב֣וֹאya.Vo'H935andattackוְהִכַּ֔נִיve.hi.Ka.niH5221me and themothersאֵ֖ם'emH517with the childrenבָּנִֽים׃ba.NimH1121.

12For You saidאָמַ֔רְתָּ'a.Mar.taH559, ‘I will surelyהֵיטֵ֥בhei.TevH3190prosperאֵיטִ֖יב'ei.TivH3190you andmakeוְשַׂמְתִּ֤יve.sam.TiH7760yourdescendantsזַרְעֲךָ֙zar.'a.KhaH2233as the sandכְּח֣וֹלke.CholH2344of the seaהַיָּ֔םhai.YamH3220,whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834is tooH4480greatמֵרֹֽב׃me.RoH7230to be numberedיִסָּפֵ֖רyi.sa.FerH5608.’”

13So he spentוַיָּ֥לֶןvai.Ya.lenH3885the nightבַּלַּ֣יְלָהba.Lay.lahH3915thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033. Then heselectedוַיִּקַּ֞חvai.yi.KachH3947from whathe hadהַבָּ֧אha.Ba'H935with him apresentמִנְחָ֖הmin.ChahH4503for his brotherאָחִֽיו׃'a.ChivH251Esauלְעֵשָׂ֥וle.'e.SavH6215:

14two hundredמָאתַ֔יִםma.Ta.yimH3967femaleעִזִּ֣ים'i.ZimH5795goatsH5795and twentyעֶשְׂרִ֑ים'es.RimH6242maleוּתְיָשִׁ֖יםu.te.ya.ShimH8495goatsH8495,two hundredמָאתַ֖יִםma.Ta.yimH3967ewesרְחֵלִ֥יםre.che.LimH7353and twentyעֶשְׂרִֽים׃'es.RimH6242ramsוְאֵילִ֥יםve.'ei.LimH352,

15thirtyשְׁלֹשִׁ֑יםshe.lo.ShimH7970milkingמֵינִיק֛וֹתmei.ni.KotH3243camelsגְּמַלִּ֧יםge.ma.LimH1581and their coltsוּבְנֵיהֶ֖םu.ve.nei.HemH1121,fortyאַרְבָּעִים֙'ar.ba.'ImH705cowsפָּר֤וֹתpa.RotH6510and tenעֲשָׂרָ֔ה'a.sa.RahH6235bullsוּפָרִ֣יםu.fa.RimH6499,twentyH6242femaleאֲתֹנֹ֣ת'a.to.NotH860donkeysH860and tenעֲשָׂרָֽה׃'a.sa.RahH6235maleוַעְיָרִ֖םva'.ya.RimH5895donkeysH5895.

16He deliveredוַיִּתֵּן֙vai.yi.TenH5414theminto the handבְּיַד־be.yad-H3027of his servantsעֲבָדָ֔יו'a.va.DavH5650,everyH5739droveH5739by itselfלְבַדּ֑וֹle.va.DoH905,and saidוַ֤יֹּאמֶרVai.yo.merH559to his servantsעֲבָדָיו֙'a.va.DavH5650, “Passעִבְר֣וּ'iv.RuH5674on beforeלְפָנַ֔יle.fa.NaiH6440me, and putתָּשִׂ֔ימוּta.Si.muH7760a spaceוְרֶ֣וַחve.Re.vachH7305betweenH996drovesH5739.”

17He commandedוַיְצַ֥וvay.TzavH6680theoneH7223in frontH7223,sayingH559, “Whenכִּ֣יkiH3588my brotherאָחִ֗י'a.ChiH251Esauעֵשָׂ֣ו'e.SavH6215meetsיִֽפְגָּשְׁךָ֞yif.ga.she.KhaH6298you and asksוִשְׁאֵֽלְךָ֙vish.'e.le.KhaH7592you, sayingH559, ‘To whomלְמִי־le.mi-H4310do you belong, and whereוְאָ֣נָהve.'A.nahH575are you goingתֵלֵ֔ךְte.LekhH1980,and to whomוּלְמִ֖יu.le.MiH4310do theseאֵ֥לֶּה'E.lehH428animalsin frontH6440of you belong?’

18then you shall sayH559, ‘Thesebelong to your servantלְעַבְדְּךָ֣le.'av.de.KhaH5650Jacobלְיַעֲקֹ֔בle.ya.'a.KoH3290;it is a presentמִנְחָ֥הmin.ChahH4503sentשְׁלוּחָ֔הshe.lu.ChahH7971to my lordלַֽאדֹנִ֖יla.do.NiH113EsauH6215.And beholdוְהִנֵּ֥הve.hi.NehH2009,he alsoגַם־gam-H1571is behindאַחֲרֵֽינוּ׃'a.cha.Rei.nuH310us.’”

19Then he commandedוַיְצַ֞וvay.TzavH6680alsoH1571the secondהַשֵּׁנִ֗יha.she.NiH8145and the thirdהַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔יha.she.li.ShiH7992,and allכָּל־kol-H3605those who followedהַהֹ֣לְכִ֔יםha.Ho.le.KhimH1980 H310the drovesהָעֲדָרִ֖יםha.'a.da.RimH5739,sayingH559, “After thisהַזֶּה֙ha.ZehH2088mannerכַּדָּבָ֤רka.da.VarH1697you shall speakתְּדַבְּר֣וּןte.da.be.RunH1696to EsauH6215when you findבְּמֹצַאֲכֶ֖םbe.mo.tza.'a.KhemH4672him;

20and you shall sayH559, ‘Beholdהִנֵּ֛הhi.NehH2009,your servantעַבְדְּךָ֥'av.de.KhaH5650Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290alsoH1571is behindH310us.’” For he saidH559, “I will appeaseאֲכַפְּרָ֣ה פָנָ֗יו'a.kha.pe.Rah fa.NavH3722 H6440him with the presentבַּמִּנְחָה֙ba.min.ChahH4503that goesH1980beforeלְפָנָ֔יle.fa.NaiH6440me. Then afterwardכֵן֙khenH310 H3651I will seeאֶרְאֶ֣ה'er.'EhH7200his faceפָנָ֔יוfa.NavH6440;perhapsאוּלַ֖י'u.LaiH194he will acceptיִשָּׂ֥א פָנָֽי׃yi.Sa' fa.NaiH5375 H6440me.”

21So the presentH4503passedוַתַּעֲבֹ֥רva.ta.'a.VorH5674on beforeעַל־'al-H5921 H6440him, while he himselfH1931spentלָ֥ןlanH3885that nightבַּלַּֽיְלָה־ba.lay.lah-H3915in the campבַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃Ba.ma.cha.NehH4264.

22Now he aroseוַיָּ֣קָם׀vai.Ya.komH6965that sameH1931nightH3915and tookוַיִּקַּ֞חvai.yi.KachH3947his twoשְׁתֵּ֤יshe.TeiH8147wivesנָשָׁיו֙na.ShavH802and his twoשְׁתֵּ֣יshe.TeiH8147maidsשִׁפְחֹתָ֔יוshif.cho.TavH8198and his elevenאַחַ֥ד עָשָׂ֖ר'a.Chad 'a.SarH259 H6240childrenיְלָדָ֑יוye.la.DavH3206,and crossedH5674the fordמַעֲבַ֥רma.'a.VarH4569of theJabbokיַבֹּֽק׃ya.BokH2999.

23He tookH3947them and sentH5674them acrossH5674the streamהַנָּ֑חַלha.Na.chalH5158.And he sentH5674acrossH5674whateverאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834he had.

24Then Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290was leftוַיִּוָּתֵ֥רvai.yi.va.TerH3498aloneלְבַדּ֑וֹle.va.DoH905,and a manאִישׁ֙'ishH376wrestledוַיֵּאָבֵ֥קvai.ye.'a.VekH79with him untilעַ֖ד'adH5704daybreakהַשָּֽׁחַר׃ha.Sha.charH7837.

25When he sawוַיַּ֗רְאvai.Yar'H7200that he had not prevailedיָכֹל֙ya.KholH3201against him, he touchedוַיִּגַּ֖עvai.yi.Ga'H5060the socketבְּכַף־be.khaf-H3709of his thighיְרֵכ֑וֹye.re.KhoH3409;so the socketכַּף־kaf-H3709of Jacob’sH3290thighיֶ֣רֶךְYe.rekhH3409was dislocatedוַתֵּ֙קַע֙va.Te.ka'H3363while he wrestledH79with him.

26Then he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “LetH7971me goשַׁלְּחֵ֔נִיsha.le.Che.niH7971,for the dawnהַשָּׁ֑חַרha.Sha.charH7837is breakingעָלָ֖ה'a.LahH5927.”But he saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “I will not letH7971you goאֲשַֽׁלֵּחֲךָ֔'a.sha.le.cha.KhaH7971unlessאִם־'im-H3588 H518you blessבֵּרַכְתָּֽנִי׃be.rakh.Ta.niH1288me.”

27So he saidH559to him, “Whatמַה־mah-H4100is your nameשְּׁמֶ֑ךָshe.Me.khaH8034?”And he saidH559, “Jacobיַעֲקֹֽב׃ya.'a.KoH3290.”

28He saidH559, “Your nameH8034shall noלֹ֤אlo'H3808longerעוֹד֙'OdH5750be JacobH3290, butIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478;for you have strivenשָׂרִ֧יתָsa.Ri.taH8280with Godאֱלֹהִ֛ים'E.lo.HimH430and with menH376and have prevailedוַתּוּכָֽל׃va.tu.KhalH3201.”

29ThenJacobH3290askedוַיִּשְׁאַ֣לvai.yish.'AlH7592him and saidH559, “Pleaseנָּ֣אna'H4994tellהַגִּֽידָה־ha.gi.dah-H5046me your nameH8034.”But he saidH559, “Whyלָ֥מָּהLa.mahH4100is it that you askתִּשְׁאַ֣לtish.'AlH7592my nameH8034?”And he blessedוַיְבָ֥רֶךְvay.Va.rekhH1288him thereשָֽׁם׃ShamH8033.

30So JacobH3290namedוַיִּקְרָ֧אvai.yik.Ra'H7121 H8034the placeהַמָּק֖וֹםha.ma.KomH4725Penielפְּנִיאֵ֑לpe.ni.'ElH6439, for he said, “I have seenרָאִ֤יתִיra.'I.tiH7200Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430faceפָּנִ֣יםpa.NimH6440to faceפָּנִ֔יםpa.NimH6440, yet mylifeנַפְשִֽׁי׃naf.ShiH5315has been preservedוַתִּנָּצֵ֖לva.ti.na.TzelH5337.”

31Now the sunהַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁha.She.meshH8121roseוַיִּֽזְרַֽח־vai.yiz.rach-H2224upon him justH3512as he crossedH5674overH5674PenuelH6439,and he was limpingצֹלֵ֖עַtzo.Le.a'H6760on his thighיְרֵכֽוֹ׃ye.re.KhoH3409.

32Thereforeכֵּ֡ןkenH5921 H3651,to thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088dayהַיּ֣וֹםhai.YomH3117the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֜לYis.ra.'ElH3478do not eatיֹאכְל֨וּyo.khe.LuH398the sinewגִּ֣ידgidH1517of the hipהַנָּשֶׁ֗הha.na.ShehH5384whichH834is on the socketכַּ֣ףkafH3709of the thighH3409,becauseכִּ֤יkiH3588he touchedנָגַע֙na.Ga'H5060the socketבְּכַף־be.khaf-H3709of Jacob’sיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290thighH3409in the sinewבְּגִ֖ידbe.GidH1517of the hipהַנָּשֶֽׁה׃ha.na.ShehH5384.
