Genesis 32
Revised Version 1895
1And Jacob wentH7725 on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2And JacobH3290 said when he saw them, This is God’sH430 host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim. 3And JacobH3290 sentH559 messengers beforeH430 him to EsauH559 his brother unto the landH4725 of Seir, the field of Edom. 4And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye say unto my lord EsauH6215; Thus saith thy servant JacobH3290, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now: 5and I have oxen, and asses and flocks, and menservants ard maidservants: and I have sentH6680 to tellH559 my lordH113, that I may find grace in thy sight. 6And the messengersH5046 returned to JacobH7971, saying, WeH4672 cameH1961 to thy brother Esau, and moreoverH1961 he cometh to meetH4672 thee, and four hundred menH5650 with him. 7Then JacobH3290 was greatly afraid and was distressed: and he divided the peopleH376 that was with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, intoH413 twoH3967 companies; 8and he said, IfH834 Esau come to the one companyH4264, and smite it, then the companyH4264 whichH834 is left shall escape. 9And JacobH559 saidH559, O GodH559 of my father AbrahamH559, and GodH559 of my father IsaacH559, O LORD, which saidst unto meH413, ReturnH935 unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will doH518 thee good: 10I am notH776 worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and nowH3327 I am becomeH7725 two companies. 11Deliver meH1961, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he comeH1961 and smite meH1961, the mother with the children. 12And thou saidst, I will surelyH3588 doH3027 thee good, and makeH3588 thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. 13And he lodged there that night; and tookH853 of that whichH834 he had with him a present for EsauH559 his brother; 14twoH3947 hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, twoH3947 hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15thirty milch camels and their colts, forty kine and ten bulls, twentyH6242 she-asses and ten foals. 16And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and said unto his servants, Pass over before meH1121, and put a space betwixt drove and drove. 17And he commandedH559 the foremost, sayingH559, When EsauH559 my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, sayingH559, WhoseH5650 art thou? and whither goest thou? and whoseH5650 are theseH7760 beforeH6440 thee? 18then thou shalt sayH559, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sentH6680 unto my lord EsauH6215: and, behold, he also is behind usH3588. 19And he commandedH559 also the second, and the third, and allH2009 that followedH310 the droves, sayingH559, On this manner shall ye speakH559 unto EsauH6215, when ye find him; 20and ye shall sayH559, MoreoverH1571, behold, thy servant JacobH559 is behindH310 usH413. For he saidH559, I will appease him with the presentH4672 that goeth beforeH413 meH413, and afterwardH310 I will see his face; peradventure he will accept meH413. 21SoH3651 the presentH4503 passedH310 over beforeH6440 him: and he himselfH6440 lodged that night in the company. 22And he rose upH5921 that nightH3915, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven children, and passedH5674 over the ford of Jabbok. 23And he tookH3947 them, and sentH3947 them over the stream, and sentH3947 over that he had. 24And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. 25And when he saw that he prevailed not againstH5973 him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’sH3290 thigh was strained, as he wrestledH79 with him. 26And he said, LetH3808 meH7200 go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will notH3808 letH3808 thee go, exceptH3808 thou bless meH7200. 27And he saidH559 unto him, WhatH3588 is thy nameH559? And he saidH559, JacobH559. 28And he saidH559, Thy nameH8034 shall be calledH559 no more JacobH3290, but Israel: for thou hast striven with GodH559 and with menH559, and hast prevailed. 29And JacobH3290 askedH559 him, and saidH559, TellH559 meH5973, I pray thee, thy nameH8034. And he saidH559, Wherefore is it that thou dost askH559 afterH3588 my nameH8034? And he blessed him there. 30And JacobH3290 calledH559 the nameH8034 of the placeH8033 Peniel: for, saidH559 he, I have seen GodH559 face to face, and my life is preserved. 31And the sun rose uponH7121 him as he passed over PenuelH6439, and he halted uponH7121 his thigh. 32Therefore the children of Israel eat not the sinew of the hipH3409 whichH834 is uponH5921 the hollow of the thighH3409, unto this day: becauseH5921 he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thighH3409 in the sinew of the hipH3409.
