Genesis 30

1When RachelH7354 sawH7200 thatH3588 she was notH3808 bearingH3205 any childrenH7354 for JacobH3290, she enviedH7065 her sisterH269. “GiveH3051 me childrenH1121, orH518H369 IH595 will dieH4191!” she saidH559 toH413 JacobH3290.

2JacobH3290 became angryH2734H639 with RachelH7354 and saidH559, “Am IH595 in the placeH8478 of GodH430, whoH834 has withheldH4513 childrenH6529H990 from youH4480?”

3Then she saidH559, “HereH2009 is my maidservantH519 BilhahH1090. Sleep withH935 herH413, that she may bear childrenH3205 for me,1 so that through herH4480 IH595 tooH1571 can build a familyH1129.”

4So Rachel gaveH5414 Jacob her servantH8198 BilhahH1090 as a wifeH802, andH3290 he slept withH935 herH413, 5and BilhahH1090 conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 him a sonH1121. 6Then RachelH7354 saidH559, “GodH430 has vindicated meH1777; He has heardH8085 my pleaH6963 and givenH5414 me a sonH1121H5921H3651.” So she named himH7121H8034 DanH1835.2

7And Rachel’sH7354 servantH8198 BilhahH1090 conceivedH2029 againH5750 and boreH3205 JacobH3290 a secondH8145 sonH1121. 8Then RachelH7354 saidH559, “In my great strugglesH5319H430, I have wrestledH6617 withH5973 my sisterH269 andH1571 wonH3201.” So she namedH7121 himH8034 NaphtaliH5321.3

Gad and Asher

9When LeahH3812 sawH7200 thatH3588 she had stoppedH5975 having childrenH3205, she gaveH3947H5414 her servantH8198 ZilpahH2153 to JacobH3290 as a wifeH802. 10And Leah’sH3812 servantH8198 ZilpahH2153 boreH3205 JacobH3290 a sonH1121. 11Then LeahH3812 saidH559, “How fortunateH935!”4 So she namedH7121 himH8034 GadH1410.5

12When Leah’sH3812 servantH8198 ZilpahH2153 boreH3205 JacobH3290 a secondH8145 sonH1121, 13LeahH3812 saidH559, “How happy I amH837! ForH3588 the womenH1323 call me happyH833.” So she namedH7121 himH8034 AsherH836.6

14Now during the wheatH2406 harvestH7105, ReubenH7205H3117 went outH1980 and foundH4672 some mandrakesH1736 in the fieldH7704. When he broughtH935 themH853 toH413 his motherH517, RachelH7354 beggedH559H413 LeahH3812, “PleaseH4994 give meH5414 some of your son’sH1121 mandrakesH1736.”

15But Leah repliedH559, “Is it not enoughH4592 that you have taken awayH3947 my husbandH376? Now youH1571 want to takeH3947 my son’sH1121 mandrakesH1736 as well?”

“Very wellH3651,” saidH559 RachelH7354, “he may sleepH7901 with youH5973 tonightH3915 in exchange forH8478 your son’sH1121 mandrakesH1736.”

16When JacobH3290 came inH935 fromH4480 the fieldH7704 that eveningH6153, LeahH3812 went outH3318 to meet himH7122 and saidH559, “You must comeH935 with meH413, forH3588 I have hired youH7936 with my son’sH1121 mandrakesH1736.” So he sleptH7901 with herH5973 thatH1931 nightH3915.

Issachar, Zebulun, and Dinah

17And GodH430 listenedH8085 toH413 LeahH3812, and she conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 a fifthH2549 sonH1121 to JacobH3290. 18Then LeahH3812 saidH559, “GodH430 has rewarded meH5414H7939 forH834 givingH5414 my maidservantH8198 to my husbandH376.” So she named himH7121H8034 IssacharH3485.7

19AgainH5750 LeahH3812 conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 a sixthH8345 sonH1121 to JacobH3290. 20“GodH430 has given meH2064 a goodH2896 giftH2065,” she saidH559. “This timeH6471 my husbandH376 will honor meH2082, becauseH3588 I have borneH3205 him sixH8337 sonsH1121.” And she namedH7121 himH8034 ZebulunH2074.8

21After thatH310, Leah gave birth toH3205 a daughterH1323 and namedH7121 herH8034 DinahH1783.

Joseph

22Then GodH430 rememberedH2142 RachelH7354. HeH430 listenedH8085 to herH413 and openedH6605 her wombH7358, 23and she conceivedH2029 and gave birth toH3205 a sonH1121. “GodH430 has taken awayH622 my shameH2781,” she saidH559. 24She namedH7121 himH8034 JosephH3130,9 and saidH559, “May the LORDH3068 addH3254 to me anotherH312 sonH1121.”

Jacob Prospers

25NowH1961 afterH834 RachelH7354 had given birth toH3205 JosephH3130, JacobH3290 saidH559 toH413 LabanH3837, “Send me on my wayH7971 so I can returnH1980 toH413 my homelandH4725H776. 26GiveH5414 me my wivesH802 andH853 childrenH3206 for whomH834 I have served youH5647, that I may go on my wayH1980H3588. YouH859 knowH3045 howH834 hard I have workedH5656 for youH5647.”

27But LabanH3837 repliedH559H413, “IfH518 I have foundH4672 favorH2580 in your eyesH5869, please stayH4994. I have learned by divinationH5172 that the LORDH3068 has blessed meH1288 because of youH1558.” 28And he addedH559, “NameH5344 your wagesH7939H5921, and I will pay themH5414.”

29Then Jacob answeredH559H413, “YouH859 knowH3045 howH834 I have served youH5647 andH853 howH834 your livestockH4735 have thrivedH1961 under my careH854. 30IndeedH3588, you hadH1961 very littleH4592 before my arrivalH6440, but now your wealthH7230 has increased many times overH6555. The LORDH3068 has blessedH1288 youH853 wherever I set footH7272. But nowH6258, whenH4970 may IH595 alsoH1571 provideH6213 for my own householdH1004?”

31“WhatH4100 can I giveH5414 you?” Laban askedH559.

“You do notH3808 need to giveH5414 me anythingH3972,” Jacob repliedH3290H559. “IfH518 you doH6213 thisH2088 one thingH1697 for me, I will keep onH7725 shepherdingH7462 and keepingH8104 your flocksH6629. 32Let me goH5674 through allH3605 your flocksH6629 todayH3117 and removeH5493 from themH8033 everyH3605 speckledH5348 or spottedH2921 sheepH7716, everyH3605 dark-coloredH2345 lambH7716H3775, and every spottedH2921 or speckledH5348 goatH5795. These will beH1961 my wagesH7939. 33So my honestyH6666 will testifyH6030 for me whenH3588 you come to checkH935H6440 onH5921 my wagesH7939 in the futureH3117H4279. If I haveH854 anyH3605 goatsH5795 thatH834 are notH369 speckledH5348 or spottedH2921, or any lambsH3775 that are not dark-coloredH2345, theyH1931 will be considered stolenH1589.”

34“AgreedH2005H3863,” saidH559 LabanH3837. “Let it beH1961 as you have saidH1697.”

35That veryH1931 dayH3117 Laban removedH5493 all the streakedH6124 or spottedH2921 male goatsH8495 andH853 everyH3605 speckledH5348 or spottedH2921 female goatH5795—every oneH3605 thatH834 had any whiteH3836 on it—and everyH3605 dark-coloredH2345 lambH3775, and he placed themH5414 under the careH3027 of his sonsH1121. 36Then he putH7760 a three-dayH7969H3117 journeyH1870 between himselfH996 and JacobH3290, while JacobH3290 was shepherdingH7462 the restH3498 of Laban’sH3837 flocksH6629.

37Jacob, howeverH3290, tookH3947 freshH3892 branchesH4731 of poplarH3839, almondH3869, and plane treesH6196, and peeledH6478 the bark, exposingH4286H3836 the whiteH3836 inner woodH6479 ofH5921 the branchesH4731. 38Then he setH3322 the peeledH6478 branchesH4731 in the wateringH4325 troughsH8268 in front ofH5227 the flocksH6629 coming inH935 to drinkH8354. So when the flocksH6629 were in heatH3179 and cameH935 to drinkH8354, 39theyH6629 matedH3179 in front ofH413 the branchesH4731. And they boreH3205 youngH6629 that were streakedH6124 or speckledH5348 or spottedH2921. 40JacobH3290 set apartH6504 the youngH3775, but madeH5414 theH6629 rest faceH6440H413 the streakedH6124 dark-coloredH3605H2345 sheep in Laban’sH3837 flocksH6629. Then he setH7896 his own stockH5739 apartH905 and did notH3808 put themH7896 withH5921 Laban’sH3837 animalsH6629.

41

WheneverH3605 the stronger femalesH7194 of the flockH6629 were in heatH3179, JacobH3290 would placeH7760 the branchesH4731 in the troughsH7298, in full viewH5869 of the animalsH6629, so that they would breedH3179 in front of the branchesH4731. 42But if the animalsH6629 were weakH5848, he did notH3808 set out the branchesH7760. So the weaker animalsH5848 went toH1961 LabanH3837 and the stronger onesH7194 to JacobH3290.

43ThusH376 Jacob becameH3966 exceedinglyH3966 prosperousH6555. He ownedH1961 largeH7227 flocksH6629, maidservantsH8198 and menservantsH5650, and camelsH1581 and donkeysH2543.
