Abram Journeys to Egypt

1Nowthe Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Abramאַבְרָ֔ם'av.RamH87, “Goלֶךְ־lekh-H1980forth from your countryמֵאַרְצְךָ֥me.'ar.tze.KhaH776,And from your relativesוּמִמּֽוֹלַדְתְּךָ֖u.mi.mo.lad.te.KhaH4138And from your father’sאָבִ֑יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1houseוּמִבֵּ֣יתu.mi.BeitH1004,To the landהָאָ֖רֶץha.'A.retzH776whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I will showאַרְאֶֽךָּ׃'ar.'E.kaH7200you;

2AndI will makeוְאֶֽעֶשְׂךָ֙ve.'e.'es.KhaH6213you a greatגָּד֔וֹלga.DolH1419nationלְג֣וֹיle.GoyH1471, AndI will blessוַאֲבָ֣רֶכְךָ֔va.'a.Va.rekh.khaH1288you,And makeוַאֲגַדְּלָ֖הva.'a.ga.de.LahH1431your nameשְׁמֶ֑ךָshe.Me.khaH8034greatH1431; And soyou shall be a blessingבְּרָכָֽה׃be.ra.KhahH1293;

3AndI will blessוַאֲבָֽרֲכָה֙va.'a.va.ra.KhahH1288those who blessמְבָ֣רְכֶ֔יךָme.Va.re.Khei.khaH1288you, And the one whocursesוּמְקַלֶּלְךָ֖u.me.ka.lel.ChaH7043you I willcurseאָאֹ֑ר'a.'OrH779.And in you allכֹּ֖לkolH3605the familiesמִשְׁפְּחֹ֥תmish.pe.ChotH4940of the earthהָאֲדָמָֽה׃ha.'a.da.MahH127will be blessedוְנִבְרְכ֣וּve.niv.re.KhuH1288.”

4So Abramאַבְרָ֗ם'av.RamH87wentוַיֵּ֣לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980forth as the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068had spokenדִּבֶּ֤רdi.BerH1696to him; andLotל֑וֹטLotH3876wentוַיֵּ֥לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980with him. Now Abramוְאַבְרָ֗םve.'av.RamH87was seventy-fiveוְשִׁבְעִ֣יםve.shiv.'ImH7657yearsH8141oldבֶּן־ben-H1121when he departedבְּצֵאת֖וֹbe.tze.ToH3318from Haranמֵחָרָֽן׃me.cha.RanH2771.

5Abramאַבְרָם֩'av.RamH87tookוַיִּקַּ֣חvai.yi.KachH3947Saraiשָׂרַ֨יsa.RaiH8297his wifeאִשְׁתּ֜וֹ'ish.ToH802and Lotל֣וֹטLotH3876his nephewבֶּן־ אָחִ֗יוben- 'a.ChivH1121 H251,and allכָּל־kol-H3605theirpossessionsרְכוּשָׁם֙re.khu.ShamH7399whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834they had accumulatedרָכָ֔שׁוּra.Kha.shuH7408, and thepersonsהַנֶּ֖פֶשׁha.Ne.feshH5315whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834they had acquiredעָשׂ֣וּ'a.SuH6213in Haranבְחָרָ֑ןve.cha.RanH2771, and theysetוַיֵּצְא֗וּ לָלֶ֙כֶת֙vai.ye.tze.'U la.Le.khetH3318 H1980out for the landאַ֣רְצָה'Ar.tzahH776of Canaanכְּנַ֔עַןke.Na.'anH3667;thus they cameוַיָּבֹ֖אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935to the landאַ֥רְצָה'Ar.tzahH776of Canaanכְּנָֽעַן׃ke.Na.'anH3667.

6Abramאַבְרָם֙'av.RamH87passedH5674throughH5674the landבָּאָ֔רֶץba.'A.retzH776as farH5704as the siteמְק֣וֹםme.KomH4725ofShechemשְׁכֶ֔םshe.KhemH7927, to theoakאֵל֣וֹן'e.LonH436of Morehמוֹרֶ֑הmo.RehH4176.Now the Canaaniteוְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖יve.ha.ke.na.'a.NiH3669wasthenאָ֥ז'azH227in the landבָּאָֽרֶץ׃ba.'A.retzH776.

7The Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068appearedוַיֵּרָ֤אvai.ye.Ra'H7200to Abramאַבְרָ֔ם'av.RamH87and saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “To yourdescendantsלְזַ֨רְעֲךָ֔le.Zar.'a.khaH2233I will giveאֶתֵּ֖ן'e.TenH5414thisH2088landהָאָ֣רֶץha.'A.retzH776.”So he builtוַיִּ֤בֶןvai.Yi.venH1129an altarמִזְבֵּ֔חַmiz.Be.achH4196thereשָׁם֙shamH8033to the Lordלַיהוָ֖הla.Yah.wehH3068who had appearedהַנִּרְאֶ֥הha.nir.'EhH7200to him.

8Then he proceededוַיַּעְתֵּ֨קvai.ya'.TekH6275from thereמִשָּׁ֜םmi.ShamH8033to the mountainהָהָ֗רָהha.Ha.rahH2022on the eastמִקֶּ֛דֶםmi.Ke.demH6924of BethelH1008,and pitchedוַיֵּ֣טvai.YetH5186his tentאָהְָל֑וֹ'o.ho.LoH168, withBethelH1008on the westמִיָּם֙mi.YamH3220and Aiוְהָעַ֣יve.ha.'AiH5857on the eastמִקֶּ֔דֶםmi.Ke.demH6924;and thereשָׁ֤םshamH8033he builtוַיִּֽבֶן־vai.yi.ven-H1129an altarמִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙miz.Be.achH4196to the Lordלַֽיהוָ֔הla.Yah.wehH3068andcalledוַיִּקְרָ֖אvai.yik.Ra'H7121upon the nameבְּשֵׁ֥םbe.ShemH8034of the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068.

9Abramאַבְרָ֔ם'av.RamH87journeyedוַיִּסַּ֣עvai.yi.Sa'H5265on, continuingהָל֥וֹךְ וְנָס֖וֹעַha.Lokh ve.na.So.a'H1980 H5265toward theNegevהַנֶּֽגְבָּה׃ פha.Neg.bahH5045.

10Now there wasa famineרָעָ֖בra.'AvH7458in the landבָּאָ֑רֶץba.'A.retzH776;so Abramאַבְרָ֤ם'av.RamH87wentH3381downוַיֵּ֨רֶדvai.Ye.redH3381to Egyptמִצְרַ֙יְמָה֙mitz.Ray.mahH4714to sojournלָג֣וּרla.GurH1481thereשָׁ֔םShamH8033,for the famineהָרָעָ֖בha.ra.'AvH7458wassevereכָבֵ֥דkha.VedH3515in the landבָּאָֽרֶץ׃ba.'A.retzH776.

11It cameוַיְהִ֕יvay.HiH1961about whenH3512hecameלָב֣וֹאla.Vo'H7126 H935nearH7126to Egyptמִצְרָ֑יְמָהmitz.Ra.ye.mahH4714,that he saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559to Saraiשָׂרַ֣יsa.RaiH8297his wifeאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ'ish.ToH802, “Seeהִנֵּה־hi.neh-H2009nowנָ֣אna'H4994,I knowיָדַ֔עְתִּיya.Da'.tiH3045that you are abeautifulיְפַת־ye.fat-H3303womanאִשָּׁ֥ה'i.ShahH802;

12and whenכִּֽי־ki-H3588the Egyptiansהַמִּצְרִ֔יםha.mitz.RimH4713seeיִרְא֤וּyir.'UH7200you, they will sayוְאָמְר֖וּve.'a.me.RuH559, ‘ThisH2088is his wifeאִשְׁתּ֣וֹ'ish.ToH802’;and they will killוְהָרְג֥וּve.ha.re.GuH2026me, but they will let you liveיְחַיּֽוּ׃ye.chai.YuH2421.

13Pleaseנָ֖אna'H4994sayאִמְרִי־'im.ri-H559that you aremy sisterאֲחֹ֣תִי'a.Cho.tiH269soלְמַ֙עַן֙le.Ma.'anH4616that it may goיִֽיטַב־yi.tav-H3190wellH3190with me becauseבַעֲבוּרֵ֔ךְva.'a.vu.RekhH5668of you, and thatI may liveוְחָיְתָ֥הve.cha.ye.TahH2421on accountבִּגְלָלֵֽךְ׃big.la.LekhH1558of you.”

14It cameוַיְהִ֕יvay.HiH1961about when Abramאַבְרָ֖ם'av.RamH87cameכְּב֥וֹאke.Vo'H935into Egyptמִצְרָ֑יְמָהmitz.Ra.ye.mahH4714,the Egyptiansהַמִּצְרִים֙ha.mitz.RimH4713sawוַיִּרְא֤וּvai.yir.'UH7200that the womanהָ֣אִשָּׁ֔הha.'i.ShahH802was veryמְאֹֽד׃me.'OdH3966beautifulיָפָ֥הya.FahH3303.

15Pharaoh’sפַרְעֹ֔הfar.'OhH6547officialsשָׂרֵ֣יsa.ReiH8269sawוַיִּרְא֤וּvai.yir.'UH7200her and praisedוַיְהַֽלְל֥וּvay.ha.LuH1984her to Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֑הpar.'OhH6547; andthe womanהָאִשָּׁ֖הha.'i.ShahH802was takenוַתֻּקַּ֥חva.tu.KachH3947into Pharaoh’sפַּרְעֹֽה׃par.'OhH6547houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004.

16Thereforehe treatedH3190Abramוּלְאַבְרָ֥םul.'av.RamH87wellH3190for her sakeבַּעֲבוּרָ֑הּba.'a.vu.RahH5668; andgaveוַֽיְהִי־vay.hi-H1961him sheepצֹאן־tzon-H6629and oxenוּבָקָר֙u.va.KarH1241and donkeysוַחֲמֹרִ֔יםva.cha.mo.RimH2543and maleוַעֲבָדִים֙va.'a.va.DimH5650and femaleוּשְׁפָחֹ֔תu.she.fa.ChotH8198servantsH8198and femaleוַאֲתֹנֹ֖תva.'a.to.NotH860donkeysH860and camelsוּגְמַלִּֽים׃u.ge.ma.LimH1581.

17But the Lordיְהוָ֧ה׀Yah.wehH3068struckוַיְנַגַּ֨עvay.na.Ga'H5060Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֛הpar.'OhH6547and his houseבֵּית֑וֹbei.ToH1004with greatגְּדֹלִ֖יםge.do.LimH1419plaguesנְגָעִ֥יםne.ga.'ImH5061becauseעַל־ דְּבַ֥ר'al- de.VarH5921 H1697of Saraiשָׂרַ֖יsa.RaiH8297,Abram’sאַבְרָֽם׃'av.RamH87wifeאֵ֥שֶׁת'E.shetH802.

18Then Pharaohפַרְעֹה֙far.'OhH6547calledוַיִּקְרָ֤אvai.yik.Ra'H7121Abramלְאַבְרָ֔םle.'av.RamH87and saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Whatמַה־mah-H4100is thisH2088you have doneעָשִׂ֣יתָ'a.Si.taH6213to me? Whyלָ֚מָּהLa.mahH4100did you not tellהִגַּ֣דְתָּhi.Gad.taH5046me that she was your wifeאִשְׁתְּךָ֖'ish.te.KhaH802?

19Whyלָמָ֤הla.MahH4100did you sayאָמַ֙רְתָּ֙'a.Mar.taH559, ‘She is my sisterאֲחֹ֣תִי'a.Cho.tiH269,’so that I tookוָאֶקַּ֥חva.'e.KachH3947her for my wifeלְאִשָּׁ֑הle.'i.ShahH802?Nowוְעַתָּ֕הve.'a.TahH6258then,hereהִנֵּ֥הhi.NehH2009is your wifeאִשְׁתְּךָ֖'ish.te.KhaH802,takeקַ֥חkachH3947her and goוָלֵֽךְ׃va.LekhH1980.”

20Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֖הpar.'OhH6547commandedוַיְצַ֥וvay.TzavH6680hismenH376concerningעָלָ֛יו'a.LavH5921him; and theyescortedH7971him awayוַֽיְשַׁלְּח֥וּvay.sha.le.ChuH7971,with his wifeאִשְׁתּ֖וֹ'ish.ToH802and allכָּל־kol-H3605that belonged to him.
