1 Samuel 15

American Standard Version

1And SamuelH8050 saidH559 unto SaulH7586, Jehovah sentH7971 me to anointH4886 thee to be kingH4428 over his peopleH5971, over IsraelH3478: nowH6258 thereforeH6258 hearken thou unto the voiceH6963 of the wordsH1697 of Jehovah. 2ThusH3541 saith Jehovah of hostsH6635, I have marked that which AmalekH6002 did to IsraelH3478, how he setH7760 himself against him in the wayH1870, whenH834 he cameH5927 up out of EgyptH4714. 3NowH6258 go and smite AmalekH6002, and utterly destroyH2763 all that they have, and spareH2550 them not; but slay both manH376 and womanH802, infant and suckling, oxH7794 and sheepH7716, camelH1581 and ass.

4And SaulH7586 summoned the peopleH5971, and numbered them in Telaim, twoH3967 hundredH3967 thousandH505 footmen, and tenH6235 thousandH505 menH376 of JudahH3063. 5And SaulH7586 cameH935 to the cityH5892 of AmalekH6002, and laid wait in the valley. 6And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto the Kenites, GoH5927, departH5493, get you downH3381 from among the Amalekites, lestH6435 I destroy you with them; for ye showed kindness to all the children of IsraelH3478, when they cameH5927 up out of EgyptH4714. So the Kenites departedH5493 from among the Amalekites. 7And SaulH7586 smote the Amalekites, from HavilahH2341 as thou goest to ShurH7793, that is before EgyptH4714. 8And he took AgagH90 the kingH4428 of the Amalekites aliveH2416, and utterly destroyed all the peopleH5971 with the edge of the swordH2719. 9But SaulH7586 and the peopleH5971 sparedH2550 AgagH90, and the best of the sheepH6629, and of the oxenH1241, and of the fatlings, and the lambsH3733, and all that was goodH2896, and wouldH14 not utterly destroyH2763 them: but everythingH3605 that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

10Then came the wordH1697 of Jehovah unto SamuelH8050, sayingH559, 11It repenteth me that I have setH6965 up SaulH7586 to be kingH4428; for he is turnedH7725 backH7725 from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And SamuelH8050 was wroth; and he criedH2199 unto Jehovah all nightH3915. 12And SamuelH8050 roseH7925 earlyH7925 to meetH7122 SaulH7586 in the morningH1242; and it was toldH5046 SamuelH8050, sayingH559, SaulH7586 cameH935 to CarmelH3760, and, behold, he setH5324 him up a monument, and turnedH5437, and passedH5674 on, and wentH935 downH3381 to GilgalH1537. 13And SamuelH8050 cameH935 to SaulH7586; and SaulH7586 saidH559 unto him, BlessedH1288 be thou of Jehovah: I have performed the commandment of Jehovah. 14And SamuelH8050 saidH559, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheepH6629 in mine earsH241, and the lowing of the oxenH1241 which I hearH8085? 15And SaulH7586 saidH559, They have broughtH935 them from the Amalekites: for the peopleH5971 sparedH2550 the best of the sheepH6629 and of the oxenH1241, to sacrificeH2076 unto Jehovah thy GodH430; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. 16Then SamuelH8050 saidH559 unto SaulH7586, Stay, and I will tellH5046 thee what Jehovah hath saidH559 to me this nightH3915. And he saidH559 unto him, SayH559 on.

17And SamuelH8050 saidH559, Though thou wast littleH6996 in thine ownH5869 sight, wast thou not made the headH7218 of the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478? And Jehovah anointedH4886 thee kingH4428 over IsraelH3478; 18and Jehovah sentH7971 thee on a journeyH1870, and saidH559, GoH7971, and utterly destroyH3615 the sinnersH2400 the Amalekites, and fightH3898 against them until they be consumed. 19Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voiceH6963 of Jehovah, but didst fly upon the spoilH7998, and didst that which was evilH7451 in the sight of Jehovah? 20And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto SamuelH8050, Yea, I have obeyed the voiceH6963 of Jehovah, and have goneH935 the wayH1870 which Jehovah sentH7971 me, and have broughtH935 AgagH90 the kingH4428 of AmalekH6002, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21But the peopleH5971 tookH3947 of the spoilH7998, sheepH6629 and oxenH1241, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrificeH2076 unto Jehovah thy GodH430 in GilgalH1537. 22And SamuelH8050 saidH559, Hath Jehovah as great delightH2656 in burnt-offerings and sacrificesH2077, as in obeying the voiceH6963 of Jehovah? Behold, to obey is betterH2896 than sacrificeH2077, and to hearken than the fatH2459 of ramsH352. 23For rebellionH4805 is as the sinH2403 of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphimH8655. Because thou hast rejectedH3988 the wordH1697 of Jehovah, he hath also rejectedH3988 thee from being kingH4428.

24And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto SamuelH8050, I have sinnedH2398; for I have transgressed the commandment of Jehovah, and thy wordsH1697, because I fearedH3372 the peopleH5971, and obeyed their voiceH6963. 25NowH6258 thereforeH6258, I pray thee, pardon my sinH2403, and turnH7725 again with me, that I may worship Jehovah. 26And SamuelH8050 saidH559 unto SaulH7586, I will not returnH7725 with thee; for thou hast rejectedH3988 the wordH1697 of Jehovah, and Jehovah hath rejectedH3988 thee from being kingH4428 over IsraelH3478. 27And as SamuelH8050 turnedH5437 about to goH5437 awayH5437, Saul laid holdH2388 upon the skirtH3671 of his robeH4598, and it rent. 28And SamuelH8050 saidH559 unto him, Jehovah hath rent the kingdomH4468 of IsraelH3478 from thee this dayH3117, and hath givenH5414 it to a neighborH7453 of thine, that is betterH2896 than thou. 29And alsoH1571 the Strength of IsraelH3478 will not lie nor repentH5162; for he is not a manH120, that he should repentH5162. 30Then he saidH559, I have sinnedH2398: yet honorH3513 me nowH6258, I pray thee, before the eldersH2205 of my peopleH5971, and before IsraelH3478, and turnH7725 again with me, that I may worship Jehovah thy GodH430. 31So SamuelH8050 turnedH7725 again after SaulH7586; and SaulH7586 worshipped Jehovah.

32Then saidH559 SamuelH8050, BringH5066 ye hither to me AgagH90 the kingH4428 of the Amalekites. And AgagH90 came unto him cheerfully. And AgagH90 saidH559, Surely the bitternessH4751 of deathH4194 is past. 33And SamuelH8050 saidH559, As thy swordH2719 hath madeH7921 womenH802 childlessH7921, soH3651 shall thy motherH517 be childlessH7921 among womenH802. And SamuelH8050 hewed AgagH90 in pieces before Jehovah in GilgalH1537.

34Then SamuelH8050 wentH5927 to RamahH7414; and SaulH7586 wentH5927 up to his houseH1004 to GibeahH1390 of SaulH7586. 35And SamuelH8050 came no more to seeH7200 SaulH7586 until the dayH3117 of his deathH4194; for SamuelH8050 mournedH56 for SaulH7586: and Jehovah repentedH5162 that he had made SaulH7586 kingH4427 over IsraelH3478.
