1 Samuel 14

Revised Version 1895

1NowH1961 it fellH1961 uponH1961 a dayH3117, that JonathanH3129 the sonH1121 of SaulH7586 saidH559 unto the youngH5288 manH5288 that bare his armour, ComeH1961 and letH1961 usH413 goH1961 over to the Philistines’H6430 garrisonH4673, that is on yonder sideH5676. But he toldH5046 notH3808 his fatherH1. 2And SaulH7586 abodeH3427 in the uttermost part of GibeahH1390 underH8478 the pomegranateH7416 treeH7416 whichH834 is in MigronH4051: and the peopleH5971 that were with him were about sixH8337 hundredH3967 menH376: 3and AhijahH281, the sonH1121 of AhitubH285, Ichabod’sH350 brotherH251, the sonH1121 of PhinehasH6372, the sonH1121 of EliH5941, the priestH3548 of the LORDH3068 in ShilohH7887, wearingH5375 an ephodH646. And the peopleH5971 knewH3045 notH3808 that JonathanH3129 was goneH1980. 4And betweenH996 the passesH5674, by whichH834 JonathanH3129 soughtH1245 to goH5674 over unto the Philistines’H6430 garrisonH4673, there was a rockyH5553 cragH8127 on the one sideH5676, and a rockyH5553 cragH8127 on the otherH259 sideH5676: and the nameH8034 of the one was BozezH949, and the nameH8034 of the otherH259 SenehH5573. 5The one cragH8127 roseH4690 upH1387 on the northH6828 in frontH4136 of MichmashH4363, and the otherH259 on the southH5045 in frontH4136 of GebaH1387. 6And JonathanH3083 saidH559 to the youngH5288 manH5288 that bare his armour, Come and let usH413 goH5674 over unto the garrisonH4673 of theseH428 uncircumcisedH6189: it may be that the LORDH3068 will work for usH413: for there is noH369 restraint to the LORDH3068 to saveH3467 by manyH7227 or by fewH4592. 7And his armourbearer saidH559 unto him, DoH6213 allH3605 that is in thine heartH3824: turnH5186 thee, beholdH2005 I am with thee according to thy heartH3824. 8Then saidH559 JonathanH3083, BeholdH2009, weH587 will passH5674 over unto the menH376, and weH587 will discover ourselvesH587 unto them. 9IfH518 they sayH559 thusH3541 unto usH413, Tarry untilH5704 weH518 comeH5927 to youH518; then weH518 will standH5975 stillH5975 in our placeH8478, and will notH3808 goH5927 upH5927 unto them. 10But ifH518 they sayH559 thusH3541, ComeH5927 upH5927 unto usH5414; then weH3588 will goH5927 upH5927: for the LORDH3068 hath deliveredH5414 them intoH5921 our handH3027: and this shall be the signH226 unto usH5414. 11And bothH8147 of them discovered themselvesH2244 unto the garrisonH4673 of the PhilistinesH6430: and the PhilistinesH6430 saidH559, BeholdH2009, the HebrewsH5680 comeH3318 forthH3318 outH3318 of the holesH2356 whereH834 they had hidH2244 themselvesH2244. 12And the menH376 of the garrison answeredH559 JonathanH3129 and his armourbearer, and saidH559, ComeH5927 upH5927 to usH5414, and weH3588 will shew youH3588 a thingH1697. And JonathanH3129 saidH559 unto his armourbearer, ComeH5927 upH5927 afterH310 meH413: for the LORDH3068 hath deliveredH5414 them intoH413 the handH3027 of IsraelH3478. 13And JonathanH3129 climbedH5927 upH5927 uponH5921 his handsH3027 and uponH5921 his feetH7272, and his armourbearer afterH310 him: and they fellH5307 beforeH6440 JonathanH3129; and his armourbearer slew them afterH310 him. 14And that firstH7223 slaughterH4347, whichH834 JonathanH3129 and his armourbearer madeH1961, was aboutH1961 twentyH6242 menH376 within as it were halfH2677 a furrow’s length in an acreH6776 of landH7704. 15And there was a tremblingH2729 in the campH4264, in the fieldH7704, and among allH3605 the peopleH5971; the garrisonH4673, and the spoilers, they also trembledH7264: and the earthH776 quakedH7264; soH1961 there was an exceeding greatH430 tremblingH2729. 16And the watchmenH6822 of SaulH7586 in GibeahH1390 of BenjaminH1144 lookedH7200; and, beholdH2009, the multitudeH1995 meltedH4127 awayH4127, and they went hither and thither. 17Then saidH559 SaulH7586 unto the peopleH5971 that were with him, NumberH6485 nowH4994, and seeH7200 who is goneH1980 from usH4994. And when they had numberedH6485, beholdH2009, JonathanH3129 and his armourbearer were notH369 there. 18And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto AhijahH281, BringH5066 hither the arkH727 of GodH430. For the arkH727 of GodH430 was there at that time with the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478. 19And it cameH1961 to passH1961, whileH5704 SaulH7586 talkedH1696 unto the priestH3548, that the tumultH1995 that was in the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 wentH1980 on and increased: and SaulH7586 saidH559 unto the priestH3548, WithdrawH622 thine handH3027. 20And SaulH7586 and allH3605 the peopleH5971 that were with him were gathered togetherH2199, and cameH935 to the battleH4421: and, beholdH2009, everyH3605 man’sH376 swordH2719 was againstH854 his fellowH376, and there was a veryH3966 greatH1419 discomfiture. 21NowH1961 the HebrewsH5680 that were with the PhilistinesH6430 as beforetime, whichH834 wentH5927 upH5927 with them intoH1961 the campH4264 from the country roundH5439 aboutH1961; evenH1571 they also turnedH1961 to be with the IsraelitesH3478 that were with SaulH7586 and JonathanH3129. 22Likewise allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 whichH2022 had hidH2244 themselvesH310 in the hillH2022 countryH2022 of EphraimH669, when they heardH8085 that the PhilistinesH6430 fledH5127, evenH1571 they also followedH310 hardH2244 afterH310 them in the battleH4421. 23SoH5674 the LORDH3068 savedH3467 IsraelH3478 that dayH3117: and the battleH4421 passedH5674 over by Beth-aven. 24And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 were distressed that dayH3117: but SaulH7586 adjured the peopleH5971, sayingH559, CursedH779 be the manH376 that eateth anyH3605 foodH3899 untilH5704 it be eveningH6153, and I be avengedH5358 on mine enemiesH341. SoH3808 noneH3808 of the peopleH5971 tastedH2938 foodH3899. 25And allH3605 the peopleH776 cameH935 intoH935 the forestH3293; and there was honeyH1706 uponH5921 the groundH776. 26And when the peopleH5971 were comeH935 unto the forestH3293, beholdH2009, the honeyH1706 dropped: but noH369 manH369 putH935 his handH3027 to his mouthH6310; for the peopleH5971 fearedH3372 the oathH7621. 27But JonathanH3129 heardH8085 notH3808 when his fatherH1 charged the peopleH5971 with the oathH7650: wherefore he putH7971 forthH7971 the endH7097 of the rodH4294 that was in his handH3027, and dippedH2881 it in the honeycombH3295, and putH7971 his handH3027 to his mouthH6310; and his eyesH5869 were enlightened. 28Then answeredH559 one of the peopleH5971, and saidH559, Thy fatherH1 straitly charged the peopleH5971 with an oathH7650, sayingH559, CursedH779 be the manH376 that eateth foodH3899 this dayH3117. And the peopleH5971 were faint. 29Then saidH559 JonathanH3129, My fatherH1 hath troubledH5916 the landH776: seeH7200, I prayH4994 youH3588, howH3588 mine eyesH5869 have been enlightenedH215, becauseH3588 I tastedH2938 a littleH4592 of this honeyH1706. 30HowH834 muchH7235 moreH637, ifH3588 haply the peopleH5971 had eatenH398 freelyH398 todayH3117 of the spoilH7998 of their enemiesH341 whichH834 they foundH4672? for nowH6258 hath there been noH3808 great slaughterH4347 among the PhilistinesH6430. 31And they smoteH5221 of the PhilistinesH6430 that dayH3117 from MichmashH4363 to AijalonH357: and the peopleH5971 were veryH3966 faint. 32and the peopleH5971 flew uponH5921 the spoilH7998, and tookH3947 sheepH6629, and oxenH1241, and calvesH1121, and slewH7819 them on the groundH776: and the peopleH5971 didH6213 eatH398 them with the bloodH1818. 33Then they toldH5046 SaulH7586, sayingH559, BeholdH2009, the peopleH5971 sinH2398 againstH5921 the LORDH3068, in that they eatH398 with the bloodH1818. And he saidH559, Ye have dealtH898 treacherouslyH898: rollH1556 a greatH1419 stoneH68 unto meH413 this dayH3117. 34And SaulH7586 saidH559, Disperse yourselves among the peopleH5971, and sayH559 unto them, BringH5066 meH413 hither everyH3605 manH376 his oxH7794, and everyH3605 manH376 his sheepH7716, and slayH7819 them hereH2088, and eatH398; and sinH2398 notH3808 againstH413 the LORDH3068 in eatingH398 with the bloodH1818. And allH3605 the peopleH5971 broughtH5066 everyH3605 manH376 his oxH7794 with him that nightH3915, and slewH7819 them there. 35And SaulH7586 builtH1129 an altarH4196 unto the LORDH3068: the sameH853 was the first altarH4196 that he builtH1129 unto the LORDH3068. 36And SaulH7586 saidH559, LetH3381 usH413 goH3381 downH3381 afterH310 the PhilistinesH6430 by nightH3915, and spoilH962 them untilH5704 the morningH1242 lightH216, and letH3381 usH413 notH3808 leaveH7604 a manH376 of them. And they saidH559, DoH6213 whatsoeverH3605 seemeth goodH2896 unto thee. Then saidH559 the priestH3548, LetH3381 usH413 drawH7126 nearH7126 hither unto GodH430. 37And SaulH7586 askedH7592 counsel of GodH430, Shall I goH3381 downH3381 afterH310 the PhilistinesH6430? wilt thou deliverH5414 them intoH3027 the handH3027 of IsraelH3478? But he answeredH6030 him notH3808 that dayH3117. 38And SaulH7586 saidH559, DrawH5066 nigh hither, allH3605 ye chiefsH6438 of the peopleH5971: and knowH3045 and seeH7200 wherein this sinH2403 hath been this dayH3117. 39For, as the LORDH3068 liveth, which saveth IsraelH3478, thoughH3588 it be in JonathanH3129 my sonH1121, he shall surelyH3588 dieH4191. But there was notH369 a manH1121 among allH3605 the peopleH5971 that answeredH6030 him. 40Then saidH559 he unto allH3605 IsraelH3478, Be ye on one sideH5676, and I and JonathanH3129 my sonH1121 will be on the otherH259 sideH5676. And the peopleH5971 saidH559 unto SaulH7586, DoH6213 whatH2896 seemeth goodH2896 unto thee. 41Therefore SaulH7586 saidH559 unto the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, Shew the right. And JonathanH3129 and SaulH7586 were takenH3920 by lot: but the peopleH5971 escapedH3318. 42And SaulH7586 saidH559, CastH5307 lots betweenH996 meH3920 and JonathanH3129 my sonH1121. And JonathanH3129 was takenH3920. 43Then SaulH7586 saidH559 to JonathanH3129, TellH5046 meH413 whatH4100 thou hast doneH6213. And JonathanH3129 toldH5046 him, and saidH559, I didH6213 certainlyH4191 tasteH2938 a littleH4592 honeyH1706 with the endH7097 of the rodH4294 that was in mine handH3027; and, loH2005, I mustH4191 dieH4191. 44And SaulH7586 saidH559, GodH430 doH6213 soH6213 and moreH3254 also: for thou shalt surelyH3588 dieH4191, JonathanH3129. 45And the peopleH5971 saidH559 unto SaulH7586, Shall JonathanH3129 dieH4191, who hath wrought this greatH1419 salvationH3444 in IsraelH3478? GodH430 forbidH2486: as the LORDH3068 liveth, there shall notH3808 one hairH8185 of his headH7218 fallH5307 to the groundH776; for he hath wrought with GodH430 this dayH3117. SoH6213 the peopleH5971 rescuedH6299 JonathanH3129, that he diedH4191 notH3808. 46Then SaulH7586 wentH1980 upH5927 from followingH310 the PhilistinesH6430: and the PhilistinesH6430 wentH1980 to their own placeH4725. 47Now when SaulH7586 had takenH3920 the kingdomH4410 over IsraelH3478, he foughtH3898 againstH5921 allH3605 his enemiesH341 on everyH3605 sideH5439, againstH5921 MoabH4124, and againstH5921 the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983, and againstH5921 EdomH123, and againstH5921 the kingsH4428 of ZobahH6678, and againstH5921 the PhilistinesH6430: and whithersoever he turnedH6437 himselfH6437, he vexed them. 48And he didH6213 valiantlyH2428, and smoteH5221 the AmalekitesH6002, and deliveredH5337 IsraelH3478 outH3027 of the handsH3027 of them that spoiled them. 49NowH1961 the sonsH1121 of SaulH7586 were JonathanH3129, and IshviH3440, and Malchishua: and the namesH8034 of his twoH8147 daughtersH1323 were these; the nameH8034 of the firstbornH1067 MerabH4764, and the nameH8034 of the youngerH6996 MichalH4324: 50and the nameH8034 of Saul’sH7586 wifeH802 was AhinoamH293 the daughterH1323 of AhimaazH290: and the nameH8034 of the captainH8269 of his hostH6635 was AbnerH74 the sonH1121 of NerH5369, Saul’sH7586 uncleH1730. 51And KishH7027 was the fatherH1 of SaulH7586; and NerH5369 the fatherH1 of AbnerH74 was the sonH1121 of AbielH22. 52And there was sore warH4421 againstH5921 the PhilistinesH6430 allH3605 the daysH3117 of SaulH7586: and when SaulH7586 sawH7200 anyH3605 mightyH1368 manH376, or anyH3605 valiantH2428 manH376, he tookH1961 him unto him.
