1 Samuel 14

1Now it fell upon a dayH3117, that JonathanH3129 the sonH1121 of SaulH7586 saidH559 unto the youngH5288 manH5288 that bare his armorH3627, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’H6430 garrisonH4673, that is on yonder sideH5676. But he toldH5046 not his fatherH1. 2And SaulH7586 abode in the uttermost part of GibeahH1390 under the pomegranate-tree which is in MigronH4051: and the peopleH5971 that were with him were about sixH8337 hundredH3967 menH376; 3and AhijahH281, the sonH1121 of AhitubH285, Ichabod’s brotherH251, the sonH1121 of PhinehasH6372, the sonH1121 of EliH5941, the priestH3548 of Jehovah in ShilohH7887, wearing an ephodH646. And the peopleH5971 knewH3045 not that JonathanH3129 was goneH1980. 4And between the passesH5674, by which JonathanH3129 soughtH1245 to go over unto the Philistines’H6430 garrisonH4673, there was a rocky crag on the oneH259 sideH5676, and a rocky crag on the other sideH5676: and the nameH8034 of the oneH259 was Bozez, and the nameH8034 of the other Seneh. 5The oneH259 crag rose up on the northH6828 in frontH4136 of Michmash, and the other on the southH5045 in frontH4136 of GebaH1387.

6And JonathanH3083 saidH559 to the youngH5288 manH5288 that bare his armorH3627, Come, and let us go over unto the garrisonH4673 of these uncircumcisedH6189: it may be that Jehovah will work for us; for there is no restraint to Jehovah to saveH3467 by manyH7227 or by fewH4592. 7And his armorbearer saidH559 unto him, Do all that is in thy heartH3824: turnH5186 thee, behold, I am with thee according to thy heartH3824. 8Then saidH559 JonathanH3083, Behold, we will passH5674 over unto the menH376, and we will disclose ourselves unto them. 9If they sayH559 thusH3541 unto us, Tarry until we comeH5927 to you; then we will standH5975 stillH5975 in our placeH8478, and will not goH5927 up unto them. 10But if they sayH559 thusH3541, ComeH5927 up unto us; then we will goH5927 up; for Jehovah hath delivered them into our handH3027: and this shall be the signH226 unto us. 11And both of them disclosed themselves unto the garrisonH4673 of the PhilistinesH6430: and the PhilistinesH6430 saidH559, Behold, the HebrewsH5680 comeH3318 forthH3318 out of the holesH2356 whereH834 they had hidH2244 themselves. 12And the menH376 of the garrison answered JonathanH3129 and his armorbearer, and saidH559, ComeH5927 up to us, and we will show you a thingH1697. And JonathanH3129 saidH559 unto his armorbearer, ComeH5927 up after me; for Jehovah hath delivered them into the handH3027 of IsraelH3478. 13And JonathanH3129 climbed up upon his handsH3027 and upon his feetH7272, and his armorbearer after him: and they fellH5307 before JonathanH3129; and his armorbearer slew them after him. 14And that firstH7223 slaughterH4347, which JonathanH3129 and his armorbearer made, wasH1961 about twentyH6242 menH376, within as it were halfH2677 a furrow’s length in an acre of landH7704. 15And there wasH1961 a tremblingH2729 in the campH4264, in the fieldH7704, and among all the peopleH5971; the garrisonH4673, and the spoilers, they alsoH1571 trembledH7264; and the earthH776 quakedH7264: so there wasH1961 an exceeding great tremblingH2729.

16And the watchmenH6822 of SaulH7586 in GibeahH1390 of BenjaminH1144 lookedH7200; and, behold, the multitudeH1995 meltedH4127 awayH4127, and they went hither and thither. 17Then saidH559 SaulH7586 unto the peopleH5971 that were with him, Number now, and seeH7200 who is goneH1980 from us. And whenH834 they had numbered, behold, JonathanH3129 and his armorbearer were not there. 18And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto AhijahH281, BringH5066 hither the arkH727 of GodH430. For the arkH727 of GodH430 wasH1961 there at that time with the children of IsraelH3478. 19And it came to pass, while SaulH7586 talked unto the priestH3548, that the tumultH1995 that wasH1961 in the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 wentH1980 on and increased: and SaulH7586 saidH559 unto the priestH3548, WithdrawH622 thy handH3027. 20And SaulH7586 and all the peopleH5971 that were with him were gathered togetherH2199, and cameH935 to the battleH4421: and, behold, every man’sH376 swordH2719 wasH1961 against his fellow, and there wasH1961 a veryH3966 greatH1419 discomfiture. 21Now the HebrewsH5680 that were with the PhilistinesH6430 as beforetime, and that wentH5927 up with them into the campH4264, from the country roundH5439 about, even they alsoH1571 turned to beH1961 with the Israelites that were with SaulH7586 and JonathanH3129. 22Likewise all the menH376 of IsraelH3478 that had hidH2244 themselves in the hill-country of EphraimH669, when they heardH8085 that the PhilistinesH6430 fledH5127, even they alsoH1571 followed hard after them in the battleH4421. 23So Jehovah savedH3467 IsraelH3478 that dayH3117: and the battleH4421 passedH5674 over by Beth-aven.

24And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 were distressed that dayH3117; for SaulH7586 had adjured the peopleH5971, sayingH559, CursedH779 be the manH376 that eateth any foodH3899 until it be eveningH6153, and I be avengedH5358 on mine enemiesH341. So none of the peopleH5971 tastedH2938 foodH3899. 25And all the people cameH935 into the forestH3293; and there wasH1961 honeyH1706 upon the groundH776. 26And when the peopleH5971 were comeH935 unto the forestH3293, behold, the honeyH1706 dropped: but no man put his handH3027 to his mouthH6310; for the peopleH5971 fearedH3372 the oathH7621. 27But JonathanH3129 heardH8085 not whenH834 his fatherH1 charged the peopleH5971 with the oathH7650: wherefore he put forthH7971 the endH7097 of the rodH4294 that was in his handH3027, and dippedH2881 it in the honeycomb, and put his handH3027 to his mouthH6310; and his eyesH5869 were enlightened. 28Then answered oneH376 of the peopleH5971, and saidH559, Thy fatherH1 straitly charged the peopleH5971 with an oathH7650, sayingH559, CursedH779 be the manH376 that eateth foodH3899 this dayH3117. And the peopleH5971 were faint. 29Then saidH559 JonathanH3129, My fatherH1 hath troubledH5916 the landH776: seeH7200, I pray you, how mine eyesH5869 have been enlightened, because I tastedH2938 a littleH4592 of this honeyH1706. 30How muchH7235 more, if haply the peopleH5971 had eatenH398 freely to-day of the spoilH7998 of their enemiesH341 which they foundH4672? for nowH6258 hath there been no great slaughterH4347 among the PhilistinesH6430.

31And they smote of the PhilistinesH6430 that dayH3117 from Michmash to AijalonH357. And the peopleH5971 were veryH3966 faint; 32and the peopleH5971 flew upon the spoilH7998, and tookH3947 sheepH6629, and oxenH1241, and calves, and slew them on the groundH776; and the peopleH5971 did eatH398 them with the bloodH1818. 33Then they toldH5046 SaulH7586, sayingH559, Behold, the peopleH5971 sinH2398 against Jehovah, in that they eatH398 with the bloodH1818. And he saidH559, Ye have dealtH898 treacherouslyH898: rollH1556 a greatH1419 stoneH68 unto me this dayH3117. 34And SaulH7586 saidH559, Disperse yourselves among the peopleH5971, and sayH559 unto them, BringH5066 me hither every manH376 his oxH7794, and every manH376 his sheepH7716, and slay them hereH2088, and eatH398; and sinH2398 not against Jehovah in eatingH398 with the bloodH1818. And all the peopleH5971 broughtH5066 every manH376 his oxH7794 with him that nightH3915, and slew them there. 35And SaulH7586 builtH1129 an altarH4196 unto Jehovah: the same was the first altarH4196 that he builtH1129 unto Jehovah.

36And SaulH7586 saidH559, Let us goH3381 down after the PhilistinesH6430 by nightH3915, and takeH962 spoilH962 among them until the morningH1242 lightH216, and let us not leaveH7604 a manH376 of them. And they saidH559, Do whatsoever seemeth goodH2896 unto thee. Then saidH559 the priestH3548, Let us drawH7126 near hither unto GodH430. 37And SaulH7586 askedH7592 counsel of GodH430, Shall I goH3381 down after the PhilistinesH6430? wilt thou deliver them into the handH3027 of IsraelH3478? But he answeredH6030 him not that dayH3117. 38And SaulH7586 saidH559, DrawH5066 nigh hither, all ye chiefs of the peopleH5971; and knowH3045 and seeH7200 wherein this sinH2403 hath beenH1961 this dayH3117. 39For, as Jehovah liveth, who saveth IsraelH3478, though it be in JonathanH3129 my sonH1121, he shall surely dieH4191. But there was not a man among all the peopleH5971 that answeredH6030 him. 40Then saidH559 he unto all IsraelH3478, BeH1961 ye on oneH259 sideH5676, and I and JonathanH3129 my sonH1121 will beH1961 on the other sideH5676. And the peopleH5971 saidH559 unto SaulH7586, Do what seemeth goodH2896 unto thee. 41Therefore SaulH7586 saidH559 unto Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, Show the right. And JonathanH3129 and SaulH7586 were takenH3920 by lot; but the peopleH5971 escaped. 42And SaulH7586 saidH559, CastH5307 lots between me and JonathanH3129 my sonH1121. And JonathanH3129 was takenH3920.

43Then SaulH7586 saidH559 to JonathanH3129, TellH5046 me what thou hast done. And JonathanH3129 toldH5046 him, and saidH559, I did certainlyH4191 tasteH2938 a littleH4592 honeyH1706 with the endH7097 of the rodH4294 that was in my handH3027; and, lo, I must dieH4191. 44And SaulH7586 saidH559, GodH430 do so and more also; for thou shalt surely dieH4191, JonathanH3129. 45And the peopleH5971 saidH559 unto SaulH7586, Shall JonathanH3129 dieH4191, who hath wrought this greatH1419 salvationH3444 in IsraelH3478? FarH2486 from it: as Jehovah liveth, there shall not oneH2088 hairH8185 of his headH7218 fallH5307 to the groundH776; for he hath wrought with GodH430 this dayH3117. So the peopleH5971 rescued JonathanH3129, that he diedH4191 not. 46Then SaulH7586 wentH1980 up from following the PhilistinesH6430; and the PhilistinesH6430 wentH1980 to their own placeH4725.

47Now whenH834 SaulH7586 had takenH3920 the kingdom over IsraelH3478, he foughtH3898 against all his enemiesH341 on every side, against MoabH4124, and against the children of AmmonH5983, and against EdomH123, and against the kingsH4428 of ZobahH6678, and against the PhilistinesH6430: and whithersoever he turnedH6437 himself, he put them to the worse. 48And he did valiantly, and smote the Amalekites, and deliveredH5337 IsraelH3478 out of the handsH3027 of them that despoiled them.

49Now the sonsH1121 of SaulH7586 wereH1961 JonathanH3129, and IshviH3440, and Malchishua; and the namesH8034 of his twoH8147 daughtersH1323 wereH1961 these: the nameH8034 of the first-born MerabH4764, and the nameH8034 of the youngerH6996 MichalH4324: 50and the nameH8034 of Saul’s wifeH802 was AhinoamH293 the daughterH1323 of AhimaazH290. And the nameH8034 of the captain of his hostH6635 was AbnerH74 the sonH1121 of NerH5369, Saul’s uncleH1730. 51And KishH7027 was the fatherH1 of SaulH7586; and NerH5369 the fatherH1 of AbnerH74 was the sonH1121 of AbielH22.

52And there wasH1961 sore warH4421 against the PhilistinesH6430 all the daysH3117 of SaulH7586: and when SaulH7586 sawH7200 any mightyH1368 manH376, or any valiant manH376, he took him unto him.
