Genesis 11
The Tower of Babel
(Deuteronomy 32:8; Acts 2:1–13)
1Now the wholeH3605 worldH776 hadH1961 oneH259 languageH8193 and a commonH259 form of speechH1697. 2AndH1961 as people journeyedH5265 eastwardH6924,1 they foundH4672 a plainH1237 in the landH776 of ShinarH81522 and settledH3427 thereH8033.
3And they saidH559 toH413 oneH376 anotherH7453, “ComeH3051, let us makeH3835 bricksH3843 and bake themH8313 thoroughlyH8316.” So they usedH1961 brickH3843 instead of stoneH68, and tarH2564 instead of mortarH2563.
4“ComeH3051,” they saidH559, “let us buildH1129 for ourselves a cityH5892 with a towerH4026 that reachesH7218 to the heavensH8064, that we may makeH6213 a nameH8034 for ourselves and notH6435 be scatteredH6327 overH5921 the faceH6440 of allH3605 the earthH776.”
5Then the LORDH3068 came downH3381 to seeH7200 the cityH5892 and the towerH4026 thatH834 the sonsH1121 of menH120 were buildingH1129. 6And the LORDH3068 saidH559, “IfH2005 they have begunH2490 to doH6213 thisH2088 as oneH259 peopleH5971 speaking the sameH3605H259 languageH8193, thenH6258 nothingH3808H3605 they deviseH2161H6213 will be beyondH1219 them. 7ComeH3051, let Us go downH3381H8033 and confuseH1101 their languageH8193, so thatH834 they will notH3808 understandH8085 oneH376 another’sH7453 speechH8193.”
8So the LORDH3068 scattered themH6327 from thereH8033 overH5921 the faceH6440 of allH3605 the earthH776, and they stoppedH2308 buildingH1129 the cityH5892. 9That is whyH5921H3651 itH8034 is calledH7121 BabelH894,3 forH3588 thereH8033 the LORDH3068 confusedH1101 the languageH8193 of the wholeH3605 worldH776, and from that placeH8033 the LORDH3068 scattered themH6327 overH5921 the faceH6440 of allH3605 the earthH776.
