Genesis 27
(Hebrews 11:20)
1WhenH3588 IsaacH3327 wasH1961 oldH2204 and his eyesH5869 were so weakH3543 that he could no longer seeH7200, he calledH7121 his olderH1419 sonH1121 EsauH6215 and saidH559 to himH413, “My sonH1121.”
“Here I amH2009,” Esau repliedH559H413.
2“LookH2009,” saidH559 Isaac, “I am nowH4994 oldH2204, and I do notH3808 knowH3045 the dayH3117 of my deathH4194. 3TakeH5375H4994 your weaponsH3627—your quiverH8522 and bowH7198—and go outH3318 into the fieldH7704 to huntH6679 some gameH6718 for me. 4Then prepareH6213 a tasty dishH4303 thatH834 I loveH157 and bringH935 it to me to eatH398, so thatH5668 IH5315 may blessH1288 you beforeH2962 I dieH4191.”
5Now RebekahH7259 was listeningH8085 to what IsaacH3327 toldH1696H413 his sonH1121 EsauH6215. So when EsauH6215 wentH1980 into the fieldH7704 to huntH6679 gameH6718 and bringH935 it back, 6RebekahH7259 saidH559 toH413 her sonH1121 JacobH3290, “BeholdH2009, I overheardH8085 your fatherH1 sayingH1696 toH413 your brotherH251H559 EsauH6215, 7‘BringH935 me some gameH6718 and prepareH6213 me a tasty dishH4303 to eatH398, so that I may bless youH1288 in the presenceH6440 of the LORDH3068 beforeH6440 I dieH4194.’
8NowH6258, my sonH1121, listen toH8085 my voiceH6963 and do exactly asH834 IH589 tellH6680 youH853. 9Go outH1980H4994 toH413 the flockH6629 and bringH3947 meH8033 twoH8147 choiceH2896 young goatsH1423H5795, so that I can makeH6213 themH853 into a tasty dishH4303 for your fatherH1—the kindH834 he lovesH157. 10Then takeH935 it to your fatherH1 to eatH398, so thatH5668 he may blessH1288 you beforeH6440 he diesH4194.”
11JacobH3290H413 answeredH559 his motherH517 RebekahH7259, “LookH2005, my brotherH251 EsauH6215 is a hairyH8163 manH376, but I amH595H376 smooth-skinnedH2509. 12What ifH194 my fatherH1 touches meH4959? Then I would be revealedH1961 to himH5869 as a deceiverH8591, and I would bringH935 upon myselfH5921 a curseH7045 rather thanH3808 a blessingH1293.”
13His motherH517 repliedH559, “Your curseH7045 be on meH5921, my sonH1121. JustH389 obeyH8085 my voiceH6963 and goH1980 get themH3947 for me.”
14So Jacob wentH1980 and gotH3947 two goats and brought themH935 to his motherH517, whoH517 madeH6213 the tasty foodH4303 his fatherH1 lovedH157. 15And RebekahH7259 tookH3947 the finestH2532 clothesH899 in the houseH1004 thatH834 belongedH854 to her olderH1419 sonH1121 EsauH6215, and she put them onH3847 her youngerH6996 sonH1121 JacobH3290. 16She also putH853H3847 the skinsH5785 of the youngH1423 goatsH5795 onH5921 his handsH3027 and onH5921 the smooth partH2513 of his neckH6677. 17ThenH853 she handedH5414H3027 her sonH1121 JacobH3290 the tasty foodH4303 and breadH3899 she had madeH6213.
18So Jacob wentH935 toH413 his fatherH1 and saidH559, “My fatherH1.”
“Here I amH2009!” he answeredH559. “Which oneH4310 are youH859, my sonH1121?”
19JacobH3290 saidH559 toH413 his fatherH1, “IH595 am EsauH6215, your firstbornH1060. I have doneH6213 asH834 you told meH1696H413. PleaseH4994H6965 sit upH3427 and eatH398 some of my gameH6718, so thatH5668 youH5315 may bless meH1288.”
20But IsaacH3327 askedH559H413 his sonH1121, “HowH4100 did you ever findH4672 it soH2088 quicklyH4116, my sonH1121?”
“BecauseH3588 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 broughtH7136 it to meH6440,” he repliedH559.
21Then IsaacH3327 saidH559 toH413 JacobH3290, “PleaseH4994 come closerH5066 so I can touch youH4184, my sonH1121. Are youH859 reallyH2088 my sonH1121 EsauH6215, orH518 notH3808?”
22So JacobH3290 came closeH5066 toH413 his fatherH1 IsaacH3327, who touched himH4959 and saidH559, “The voiceH6963 is the voiceH6963 of JacobH3290, but the handsH3027 are the handsH3027 of EsauH6215.” 23Isaac did notH3808 recognize himH5234, becauseH3588 his handsH3027 wereH1961 hairyH8163 like thoseH3027 of his brotherH251 EsauH6215; so he blessed himH1288.
24Again he askedH559, “Are youH859 reallyH2088 my sonH1121 EsauH6215?”
And he repliedH559, “I amH589.”
25“ServeH5066 me,” saidH559 Isaac, “and let me eatH398 some of my son’sH1121 gameH6718, so thatH4616 IH5315 may bless youH1288.”
Jacob brought itH5066 to him, and he ateH398; then he broughtH935 him wineH3196, and he drankH8354.
26Then his fatherH1 IsaacH3327 saidH559 to himH413, “PleaseH4994 come nearH5066 and kissH5401 me, my sonH1121.”
27So he came nearH5066 and kissedH5401 him. When Isaac smelledH7306 his clothingH899, he blessed himH1288 and saidH559:
Esau’s Lost Hope
As soon asH834 IsaacH3327 had finishedH3615 blessingH1288 him and JacobH3290H854 had leftH3318 his father’sH1 presenceH6440H3327, his brotherH251 EsauH6215 returnedH935 from the huntH6718. 31HeH1931 tooH1571 madeH6213 some tasty foodH4303, broughtH935 it to his fatherH1, and saidH559 toH1 him, “My fatherH1, sit upH6965 and eatH398 of your son’sH1121 gameH6718, so thatH5668 youH5315 may bless meH1288.”
32But his fatherH1 IsaacH3327 repliedH559, “WhoH4310 are youH859?”
“IH589 am EsauH6215, your firstbornH1060 sonH1121,” he answeredH559.
33IsaacH3327 began to tremble violentlyH2729H2731H1419H5704H3966 and saidH559, “WhoH4310 was itH1931, thenH645, who huntedH6679 the gameH6718 and brought itH935 to me? BeforeH2962 you came inH935, I ateH398 it allH3605 and blessed himH1288—and indeedH1571, he will beH1961 blessedH1288!”
34When EsauH6215 heardH8085 his father’sH1 wordsH1697, he let outH6817 a loudH1419 and bitterH4751H5704H3966 cryH6818 and saidH559 to his fatherH1, “Bless meH1288 tooH1571H589, O my fatherH1!”
35But Isaac repliedH559, “Your brotherH251 cameH935 deceitfullyH4820 and tookH3947 your blessingH1293.”
36So Esau declaredH559, “Is he not rightlyH3588 namedH7121H8034 JacobH3290?1 For he has cheated meH6117H2088 twiceH6471. He tookH3947 my birthrightH1062, andH2009 nowH6258 he has takenH3947 my blessingH1293.” Then he askedH559, “Haven’tH3808 you savedH680 a blessingH1293 for me?”
37But IsaacH3327H559 answeredH6030 EsauH6215: “LookH2005, I have madeH7760 him your masterH1376 andH853 givenH5414 him allH3605 his relativesH251 as servantsH5650; I have sustainedH5564 him with grainH1715 and new wineH8492. WhatH4100 is leftH645 that I can do for youH6213, my sonH1121?”
38EsauH6215 saidH559 toH413 his fatherH1, “Do you have only oneH259H1931 blessingH1293, my fatherH1? Bless meH1288 tooH1571H589, O my fatherH1!” Then EsauH6215 weptH1058 aloudH5375H6963.
39His fatherH1H559H413 IsaacH3327 answered himH6030:
41EsauH6215 held a grudgeH7852 against JacobH3290 because ofH5921 the blessingH1293 his fatherH1 had given himH1288. And EsauH6215 saidH559 in his heartH3820, “The daysH3117 of mourningH60 for my fatherH1 are at handH7126; then I will killH2026 my brotherH251 JacobH3290.”
42When the wordsH1697 of her olderH1419 sonH1121 EsauH6215 were relayedH5046 to RebekahH7259, she sent forH7971H7121 her youngerH6996 sonH1121 JacobH3290 and toldH559 himH413, “LookH2009, your brotherH251 EsauH6215 is consoling himselfH5162 by plotting to kill youH2026. 43So nowH6258, my sonH1121, obeyH8085 my voiceH6963 and fleeH1272 at onceH6965 toH413 my brotherH251 LabanH3837 in HaranH2771. 44StayH3427 with himH5973 for a whileH259H3117, untilH5704 your brother’sH251 furyH2534 subsidesH7725— 45untilH5704 your brother’sH251 rageH639 against youH4480 wanesH7725 and he forgetsH7911 whatH834 you have doneH6213 to him. Then I will send for youH7971 and bring you backH3947 from thereH8033. WhyH4100 should I loseH7921 bothH1571 of youH8147 in oneH259 dayH3117?”
46Then RebekahH7259 saidH559 toH413 IsaacH3327, “I am wearyH6973 of my lifeH2416 because ofH6440 these HittiteH2845 womenH1323.2 IfH518 JacobH3290 takesH3947 a HittiteH2845 wifeH802 fromH1323 among themH428H1323H776, what goodH4100 is my lifeH2416?”
