The War of the Kings

In those daysH3117 AmraphelH569 kingH4428 of ShinarH8152,1 AriochH746 kingH4428 of EllasarH495, ChedorlaomerH3540 kingH4428 of ElamH5867, and TidalH8413 kingH4428 of GoiimH1471 2went toH6213 warH4421 againstH854 BeraH1298 kingH4428 of SodomH5467H854, BirshaH1306 kingH4428 of GomorrahH6017, ShinabH8134 kingH4428 of AdmahH126, ShemeberH8038 kingH4428 of ZeboiimH6636, and the kingH4428 of BelaH1106 (that isH1931, ZoarH6820).

3The latterH428 five came as alliesH2266 toH413 the ValleyH6010 of SiddimH7708 (that isH1931, the SaltH4417 SeaH32202). 4For twelveH8147H6240 yearsH8141 they had been subjectH5647 to ChedorlaomerH3540, but in the thirteenthH7969H6240 yearH8141 they rebelledH4775.

5In the fourteenthH702H6240 yearH8141, ChedorlaomerH3540 and the kingsH4428 allied with himH854 went outH935 and defeatedH5221 the RephaitesH7497 inH6255 Ashteroth-karnaimH6255, the ZuzitesH2104 in HamH1990, the EmitesH368 in Shaveh-kiriathaimH7740H7156, 6andH853 the HoritesH2752 in the area of MountH2022 SeirH8165, as far asH5704 El-paranH364, whichH834 is nearH5921 the desertH4057. 7Then they turned backH7725 to invadeH935H413 En-mishpatH5880 (that isH1931, KadeshH6946), and they conqueredH5221 the wholeH3605 territoryH7704 of the AmalekitesH6003, asH1571 well as the AmoritesH567 who livedH3427 in Hazazon-tamarH2688.

8Then the kingH4428 of SodomH5467, the kingH4428 of GomorrahH6017, the kingH4428 of AdmahH126, the kingH4428 of ZeboiimH6636, and the kingH4428 of BelaH1106 (that isH1931, ZoarH6820) marched outH3318 and arrayedH6186 themselvesH854 for battleH4421 in the ValleyH6010 of SiddimH77083 9againstH854 ChedorlaomerH3540 kingH4428 of ElamH5867, TidalH8413 kingH4428 of GoiimH1471, AmraphelH569 kingH4428 of ShinarH8152, and AriochH746 kingH4428 of EllasarH495—fourH702 kingsH4428 againstH854 fiveH2568.

Abram Rescues Lot

10Now the ValleyH6010 of SiddimH7708 was full of tarH2564 pitsH875, and as the kingsH4428 of SodomH5467 and GomorrahH6017 fledH5127, some men fellH5307 intoH8033 the pits, but the survivorsH7604 fledH5127 to the hill countryH2022.

11The four kings seizedH3947 allH3605 the goodsH7399 of SodomH5467 and GomorrahH6017 and allH3605 their foodH400, and they went on their wayH1980. 12They also carried offH3947 Abram’sH87 nephewH1121H251 LotH3876 and his possessionsH7399, sinceH1931 Lot was livingH3427 in SodomH5467.

13Then an escapeeH6412 cameH935 and reportedH5046 this to AbramH87 the HebrewH5680. NowH1931 Abram was livingH7931 near the OaksH4364 of MamreH4471 the AmoriteH567, a brotherH251 of EshcolH812 and AnerH6063, all of whomH1992 were boundH1167 by treatyH12855 to AbramH87. 14And when AbramH87 heardH8085 thatH3588 his relativeH251 had been capturedH7617, he mobilizedH7324 the 318H8083H6240H7969H3967 trained menH2593 bornH3211 in his householdH1004, and they set out in pursuitH7291 asH5704 far as DanH1835.

15During the nightH3915, Abram dividedH2505H5921 his forcesH5650 and routedH5221 Chedorlaomer’s army, pursuing themH7291 as far asH5704 HobahH2327, northH8040 of DamascusH1834. 16He retrievedH7725 allH3605 the goodsH7399, as well asH1571 his relativeH251 LotH3876 and his possessionsH7399H7725, together withH1571 the womenH802 and the rest of the peopleH5971.

Melchizedek Blesses Abram

(Psalm 110:1–7; Hebrews 7:1–10)

17AfterH310 Abram returnedH7725 from defeatingH5221 ChedorlaomerH3540 and the kingsH4428 allied with himH834H854, the kingH4428 of SodomH5467 went outH3318 to meet himH7122 inH413 the ValleyH6010 of ShavehH7740 (that isH1931, the King’sH4428 ValleyH6010).

18Then MelchizedekH4442 kingH4428 of SalemH8004 brought outH3318 breadH3899 and wineH3196—since heH1931 was priestH3548 of GodH410 Most HighH59456— 19and he blessedH1288 Abram and saidH559:

“Blessed beH1288 AbramH87 by GodH410 Most HighH5945,CreatorH7069 of heavenH8064 and earthH776,20and blessed beH1288 GodH410 Most HighH5945,whoH834 has deliveredH4042 your enemiesH6862 into your handH3027.”

Then Abram gaveH5414 Melchizedek a tenthH4643 of everythingH3605.

21The kingH4428 of SodomH5467 saidH559 toH413 AbramH87, “GiveH5414 me the peopleH5315, but takeH3947 the goodsH7399 for yourself.”

22But AbramH87 repliedH559 toH413 the kingH4428 of SodomH5467, “I have raisedH7311 my handH3027 toH413 the LORDH3068 GodH410 Most HighH5945, CreatorH7069 of heavenH8064 and earthH776, 23thatH518 I will notH518 acceptH3947 evenH5704 a threadH2339, or a strapH8288 of a sandalH5275, or anythingH3605 thatH834 belongs to you, lestH3808 you should sayH559, ‘I have madeH589 AbramH87 richH6238.’ 24I will accept nothingH1107 butH7535 whatH834 my menH5288 have eatenH398 and the shareH2506 for the menH582 whoH834 wentH1980 with meH854—AnerH6063, EshcolH812, and MamreH4471. TheyH1992 may takeH3947 their portionH2506.”
