Genesis 47

1So JosephH3130 wentH935 and toldH5046 PharaohH6547H559: “My fatherH1 and my brothersH251, with their flocksH6629 and herdsH1241 and allH3605 they ownH834, have comeH935 from the landH776 of CanaanH3667 and are nowH2005 in GoshenH776H1657.”

2

And he choseH3947 fiveH2568 ofH582 his brothersH251 and presented themH3322 beforeH6440 PharaohH6547.

3“WhatH4100 is your occupationH4639?” PharaohH6547 askedH559 Joseph’s brothersH251.

“Your servantsH5650 are shepherdsH7462H6629,” they repliedH559H413H6547, “bothH1571 weH587 andH1571 our fathersH1.”

4Then they saidH559 toH413 PharaohH6547, “We have comeH935 to live in the landH776 for a timeH1481, becauseH3588 there is noH369 pastureH4829 for the flocksH6629 of your servantsH5650, sinceH3588 the famineH7458 in the landH776 of CanaanH3667 has been severeH3515. So nowH6258, pleaseH4994 allow your servantsH5650 to settleH3427 in the landH776 of GoshenH1657.”

5PharaohH6547 saidH559 toH413 JosephH3130H559, “Now that your fatherH1 and brothersH251 have comeH935 to youH413, 6the landH776 of EgyptH4714 is before youH6440H1931; settleH3427 your fatherH1 and brothersH251 in the bestH4315 part of the landH776. They may dwellH3427 in the landH776 of GoshenH1657. And ifH518 you know ofH3045H3426 any talentedH2428 men among themH582, put themH7760 in charge ofH8269 my own livestockH4735H5921.”

7Then JosephH3130 brought inH935 his fatherH1 JacobH3290 and presented himH5975 beforeH6440 PharaohH6547, and JacobH3290 blessedH1288 PharaohH6547.

8“How manyH4100 yearsH3117H8141 have you livedH2416?” PharaohH6547 askedH559H413H3290.

9“My travelsH40331 have lasted 130H3967H7970 yearsH8141,” JacobH3290 repliedH559H413H6547. “My yearsH3117H8141H2416 have beenH1961 fewH4592 and hardH7451, and they have notH3808 matchedH5381 the yearsH3117H8141H2416 of the travelsH4033 of my fathersH1.”

10Then JacobH3290 blessedH1288 PharaohH6547 and departedH3318 fromH6547 his presenceH6440.

11So JosephH3130 settledH3427 his fatherH1 and brothersH251H5414 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714 and gave them propertyH272 in the bestH4315 part of the landH776, the districtH776 of RamesesH7486, asH834 PharaohH6547 had commandedH6680. 12Joseph alsoH3130 providedH3557 his fatherH1 andH853 brothersH251 and allH3605 his father’sH1 householdH1004 with foodH3899 forH6310 their familiesH2945.

The Famine Continues

13There was noH369 food, howeverH3899, in allH3605 that regionH776, becauseH3588 the famineH7458 was soH3966 severeH3515; the landsH776 of EgyptH4714 andH776 CanaanH3667 had been exhaustedH3856 byH6440 the famineH7458. 14JosephH3130 collectedH3950 allH3605 the moneyH3701 to be foundH4672 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714 and the landH776 of CanaanH3667 in exchange for the grainH7668 theyH1992 were buyingH7666, and heH3130 broughtH935 it into Pharaoh’sH6547 palaceH1004. 15When the moneyH3701 from the landsH776 of EgyptH4714 andH776 CanaanH3667 was goneH8552, allH3605 the EgyptiansH4713 cameH935 toH413 JosephH3130 and saidH559, “GiveH3051 us foodH3899. WhyH4100 should we dieH4191 before your eyesH5048? ForH3588 our fundsH3701 have run outH656!”

16“Then bring meH3051 your livestockH4735,” saidH559 JosephH3130. “SinceH518 the moneyH3701 is goneH656, I will sellH5414 you food in exchange for your livestockH4735.” 17So they broughtH935 their livestockH4735 toH413 JosephH3130, and heH3130 gaveH5414 them foodH3899 in exchange for their horsesH5483, their flocksH4735H6629 and herdsH1241, and their donkeysH2543. Throughout thatH1931 yearH8141 he provided themH5095 with foodH3899 in exchange for allH3605 their livestockH4735.

18When thatH1931 yearH8141 was overH8552, they cameH935 to himH413 the secondH8145 yearH8141 and saidH559, “We cannotH3808 hideH3582 from our lordH113 thatH3588 our moneyH3701 is goneH8552 and all our livestockH4735H929 belongs toH413 you. There is nothingH3808 leftH7604 forH6440 our lordH113 exceptH1115H518 our bodiesH1472 and our landH127. 19WhyH4100 should we perishH4191 before your eyesH5869—weH587 andH1571 our landH127 as wellH1571? PurchaseH7069 usH853 andH853 our landH127 in exchange for foodH3899. Then weH587, along with our landH127, will beH1961 slavesH5650 to PharaohH6547. Give usH5414 seedH2233 that we may liveH2421 and notH3808 dieH4191, and that the landH127 may notH3808 become desolateH3456.”

20So JosephH3130 acquiredH7069 for PharaohH6547 allH3605 the landH127 in EgyptH4714; the EgyptiansH4713, one and allH376, soldH4376 their fieldsH7704 becauseH3588 the famineH7458 was so severeH2388 upon themH5921. The landH776 became Pharaoh’sH1961H6547, 21and Joseph reducedH5674 the peopleH5971 to servitudeH58922 from one endH7097H1366 of EgyptH4714 toH5704 the otherH7097. 22HoweverH7535, he did notH3808 acquireH7069 the priests’ portionH3548 of the landH127, forH3588 it had been given to them by PharaohH6547. They ateH398 the rations thatH2706 PharaohH6547 suppliedH5414; soH5921H3651 they did notH3808 sellH4376 their landH127.

23Then JosephH3130 saidH559 toH413 the peopleH5971, “Now thatH2005 I have acquiredH7069 you and your landH127 for PharaohH6547 this dayH3117, hereH1887 is seedH2233 for you to sowH2232 in the landH127. 24At harvest timeH8393, you are to giveH5414 a fifthH2549 of it to PharaohH6547, and four-fifthsH702H3027 will beH1961 yours as seedH2233 for the fieldH7704 and food for yourselvesH400 and your householdsH1004H398 and childrenH2945.”

25“You have saved our livesH2421,” they saidH559. “We have foundH4672 favorH2580 in our lord’sH113 eyesH5869, and we will beH1961 Pharaoh’sH6547 servantsH5650.” 26So JosephH3130 establishedH7760 a lawH2706 that a fifthH2569 of the produce belongs to PharaohH6547, and it is in effectH5704 inH5921 the landH127 of EgyptH4714 to thisH2088 dayH3117. OnlyH7535 the priestsH3548H905’ landH127 does notH3808 belong toH1961 PharaohH6547.

The Israelites Prosper in Goshen

27Now the IsraelitesH3478 settledH3427 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714, in the regionH776 of GoshenH1657. They acquired propertyH270 there and became fruitfulH6509 and increased greatlyH3966 in numberH7235. 28And JacobH3290 livedH2421 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714 seventeenH7651H6240 yearsH8141, and the length of his lifeH8141H2416 wasH1961H3117H3290 147H3967H7651H705 yearsH8141.

29When the timeH3117 drew nearH7126 for IsraelH3478 to dieH4191, he calledH7121 his sonH1121 JosephH3130 and saidH559 to him, “IfH518H4994 I have foundH4672 favorH2580 in your eyesH5869, putH7760H4994 your handH3027 underH8478 my thighH3409 and promise to showH6213 meH5978 kindnessH2617 and faithfulnessH571. Do notH408H4994 bury meH6912 in EgyptH4714, 30but when I lie downH7901 withH5973 my fathersH1, carry meH5375 out of EgyptH4714 and bury meH6912 with themH6900.”

Joseph answeredH559, “IH595 will doH6213 as you have requestedH1697.”

31“SwearH7650 to me,” Jacob saidH559.

So Joseph sworeH7650 to him, and IsraelH3478 bowedH7812 in worship atH5921 the headH7218 of his bedH4296.3
