The Birth of Isaac

1Now the LORDH3068 attendedH6485 to SarahH8283 asH834 He had saidH559, and the LORDH3068 didH6213 for SarahH8283 whatH834 He had promisedH1696. 2So SarahH8283 conceivedH2029 and boreH3205 a sonH1121 to AbrahamH85 in his old ageH2208, at the very timeH4150 GodH430 had promisedH1696H854.

3And AbrahamH85 gaveH7121 the nameH8034 IsaacH33271 to the sonH1121 SarahH8283 boreH3205 to him. 4When his sonH1121 IsaacH3327 was eightH8083 days oldH3117, AbrahamH85 circumcised himH4135, asH834 GodH430 had commanded himH6680. 5AbrahamH85 was a hundredH3967 years oldH1121H8141 when his sonH1121 IsaacH3327 was bornH3205 to him.

6Then SarahH8283 saidH559, “GodH430 has madeH6213 me laughH6712, and everyoneH3605 who hears of thisH8085 will laughH6711 with me.” 7She addedH559, “WhoH4310 would have toldH4448 AbrahamH85 that SarahH8283 would nurseH3243 childrenH1121? YetH3588 I have borne himH3205 a sonH1121 in his old ageH2208.”

8So the childH3206 grewH1431 and was weanedH1580, and AbrahamH85 heldH6213 a greatH1419 feastH4960 on the dayH3117 IsaacH3327 was weanedH1580.

Sarah Turns against Hagar

(Galatians 4:21–30)

9But SarahH8283 saw thatH7200 the sonH1121 whomH834 HagarH1904 the EgyptianH4713 had borneH3205 to AbrahamH85 was mockingH6711 her son,2 10and she saidH559 to AbrahamH85, “ExpelH1644 theH2063 slave womanH519 and her sonH1121, forH3588 the slave woman’sH519H2063 sonH1121 will neverH3808 share in the inheritanceH3423 withH5973 my sonH1121H5973 IsaacH3327!”3

11Now this matterH1697 distressedH7489H5869 AbrahamH85 greatlyH3966 because it concernedH5921H182 his sonH1121 Ishmael. 12But GodH430 saidH559 toH413 AbrahamH85, “Do notH408 be distressedH7489H5869 aboutH5921 the boyH5288H5921 and your maidservantH519. Listen toH8085H6963 everythingH3605 thatH834 SarahH8283 tellsH559 youH413, forH3588 through IsaacH3327 your offspringH2233 will be reckonedH7121.4 13But I will alsoH1571 makeH7760 a nationH1471 of the slave woman’sH519 sonH1121, becauseH3588 heH1931 is your offspringH2233.”

14Early in the morningH1242, AbrahamH85 got upH7925, tookH3947 breadH3899 and a skin of waterH2573H4325H5414H413, put themH7760 onH5921 Hagar’sH1904 shouldersH7926, and sent her away with the boyH3206H7971. She leftH1980 and wanderedH8582 in the WildernessH4057 ofH884 BeershebaH884. 15When the waterH4325 inH4480 the skinH2573 was goneH3615, she leftH7993 the boyH3206 underH8478 oneH259 of the bushesH7880. 16Then she went offH1980 and sat downH3427 nearbyH5048, about a bowshotH2909H7198 awayH7368, forH3588 she saidH559, “I cannotH408 bear to watchH7200 the boyH3206 dieH4194!” And as she satH3427 nearbyH5048, she lifted upH5375 her voiceH6963 and weptH1058.5

17Then GodH430 heardH8085 the voiceH6963 of the boyH5288, and the angelH4397 of GodH430 calledH7121 toH413 HagarH1904 fromH4480 heavenH8064, “What is wrongH4100, HagarH1904? Do notH408 be afraidH3372, forH3588 GodH430H413 has heardH8085 the voiceH6963 of the boyH5288 whereH834 heH1931 liesH8033. 18Get upH6965, lift upH5375 the boyH5288, and takeH2388 him by the handH3027, forH3588 I will make himH7760 into a greatH1419 nationH1471.” 19Then GodH430 openedH6491 her eyesH5869, and she sawH7200 a wellH875 of waterH4325. So she wentH1980 and filledH4390 the skin with waterH2573H4325 and gave the boyH5288 a drinkH8248.

20And GodH430 wasH1961 withH854 the boyH5288, and he grew upH1431 and settledH3427 in the wildernessH4057 and becameH1961 a greatH7235 archerH7199. 21And while he was dwellingH3427 in the WildernessH4057 of ParanH6290, his motherH517 gotH3947 a wifeH802 for him from the landH776 of EgyptH4714.

The Covenant at Beersheba

At thatH1931 timeH6256 AbimelechH40 and PhicolH6369 the commanderH8269 of his armyH6635 saidH559 toH413 AbrahamH85H559, “GodH430 is with youH5973 in allH3605 thatH834 youH859 doH6213. 23Now, thereforeH6258, swearH7650 to me hereH2008 before GodH430 that you will notH518 deal falselyH8266 with me or my childrenH5209 or descendantsH5220. ShowH6213 to meH5978 andH5973 to the countryH776 in whichH834 you resideH1481 the same kindnessH2617 thatH834 I have shownH6213 to youH5973.”

24And AbrahamH85 repliedH559, “IH595 swear itH7650.”

25But when AbrahamH85 complainedH3198 to AbimelechH40 aboutH5921H182 a wellH875H4325 thatH834 Abimelech’sH40 servantsH5650 had seizedH1497, 26AbimelechH40 repliedH559, “I do notH3808 knowH3045 whoH4310 has doneH6213 thisH2088H1571H1697. YouH859 did notH3808 tellH5046 meH1571, so IH595 have notH3808 heardH8085 about it until todayH1115H3117.”

27So AbrahamH85 broughtH3947 sheepH6629 and cattleH1241 and gave themH5414 to AbimelechH40, and the two menH8147 madeH3772 a covenantH1285. 28AbrahamH85 separatedH5324H905 sevenH7651 ewe lambsH3535 from the flockH6629, 29and AbimelechH40 askedH559H413 him, “WhyH4100H2007 have you set apartH5324H905 theseH428 sevenH7651 ewe lambsH3535?”

30He repliedH559, “You are to acceptH3947 the sevenH7651 ewe lambsH3535 from my handH3027 as my witnessH5668H1961H5713 thatH3588 I dugH2658 thisH2063 wellH875.” 31SoH5921H3651 thatH1931 placeH4725 was calledH7121 BeershebaH884,6 becauseH3588 it was thereH8033 that the twoH8147 of them swore an oathH7650. 32After they had madeH3772 the covenantH1285 at BeershebaH884, AbimelechH40 and PhicolH6369 the commanderH8269 of his armyH6635 got upH6965 and returnedH7725 toH413 the landH776 of the PhilistinesH6430.

33And Abraham plantedH5193 a tamarisk treeH815 in BeershebaH884, and thereH8033 he calledH7121 upon the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068, the EternalH5769 GodH410.7 34And AbrahamH85 residedH1481 in the landH776 of the PhilistinesH6430 for a longH7227 timeH3117.
