Genesis 19

(Judges 19:1–30)

1Now the twoH8147 angelsH4397 arrivedH935 at SodomH5467 in the eveningH6153, and LotH3876 was sittingH3427 in the gatewayH8179 ofH5467 the city. “NoH3808H3588,” they answeredH559, “we will spend the nightH3885 in the squareH7339.”

Lot Flees to Zoar

12Then the two menH582 saidH559 toH413 LotH3876, “DoH4310 you have anyone elseH5750 hereH6311—a son-in-lawH2860, your sonsH1121 or daughtersH1323, or anyoneH3605 else in the cityH5892 who belongsH834 to you? Get them outH3318 ofH4480 hereH4725, 13becauseH3588 weH587 are about to destroyH7843 thisH2088 placeH4725. ForH3588 the outcryH6818 toH854H6440 the LORDH3068 against its people is so greatH1431 thatH3068 He has sent usH7971 to destroy itH7843.”

14So LotH3876 went outH3318 and spokeH1696 toH413 the sons-in-lawH2860 who were pledged in marriage toH3947 his daughtersH1323. “Get upH6965,” he saidH559. “Get outH3318 ofH4480 thisH2088 placeH4725, forH3588 the LORDH3068 is about to destroyH7843 the cityH5892!” But his sons-in-lawH2860 thoughtH5869 he wasH1961 jokingH6711.

15AtH3644 daybreakH7837H5927 the angelsH4397 hurriedH213 Lot alongH3876, sayingH559, “Get upH6965! TakeH3947 your wifeH802 and your twoH8147 daughtersH1323 who are hereH4672, orH6435 you will be swept awayH5595 in the punishmentH5771 of the cityH5892.” 16But when Lot hesitatedH4102, the menH582 grabbedH2388 his handH3027 and the handsH3027 of his wifeH802 andH3027 his twoH8147 daughtersH1323. And they led themH3318 safelyH5117 out ofH2351 the cityH5892, because of the LORD’sH3068 compassionH2551 for themH5921.

As soon as the men had broughtH3318 themH853 outH2351, one of them saidH559, “RunH4422 forH5921 your livesH5315! Do notH408 lookH5027 backH310, and do notH408 stopH5975 anywhereH3605 on the plainH3603! FleeH4422 to the mountainsH2022, orH6435 you will be swept awayH5595!”

18But LotH3876 repliedH559H413, “NoH408, my lordsH136, pleaseH4994! 19Your servantH5650 has indeedH2009H4994 foundH4672 favorH2580 in your sightH5869, and you have shown meH6213H5978 greatH1431 kindnessH2617 by sparingH2421 my lifeH5315. But IH595 cannotH3808H3201 runH4422 to the mountainsH2022H6435; the disasterH7451 will overtake meH1692, and I will dieH4191. 20LookH2009, thereH2063 is a townH5892 nearbyH7138 whereH8033 I can fleeH5127, and itH1931 is a small placeH4705. PleaseH4994 let me fleeH4422H4994 thereH8033—is itH1931 notH3808 a small placeH4705? Then my lifeH5315 will be savedH2421.”

21“Very wellH2009,” he answeredH559H413, “I will grant this requestH5375H6440H2088H1697 as wellH1571, and will notH1115 demolishH2015 the townH5892 you indicateH1696. 22HurryH4116! The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

(Luke 17:20–37)

24Then the LORDH3068 rained downH4305 sulfurH1614 and fireH784 onH5921 SodomH5467H5921 and GomorrahH6017—fromH854 the LORDH3068 out ofH4480 the heavensH8064. 25Thus He destroyedH2015 theseH411 citiesH5892 and the entireH3605 plainH3603, includingH853 allH3605 the inhabitantsH3427 of the citiesH5892 and everything that grewH6780 on the groundH127.

26But Lot’s wifeH802 lookedH5027 backH310, and she becameH1961 a pillarH5333 of saltH4417.

27Early the next morningH1242, AbrahamH85 got upH7925 and returned toH413 the placeH4725 whereH834 he had stoodH5975H8033H854 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. 28He lookedH8259 downH5921 towardH6440 SodomH5467 and GomorrahH6017H5921 and allH3605H6440 the landH776 of the plainH3603, and he sawH7200H2009 the smokeH7008 risingH5927 from the landH776 like smokeH7008 from a furnaceH3536.

29SoH1961 when GodH430 destroyedH7843 the citiesH5892 of the plainH3603, HeH430 rememberedH2142 AbrahamH85, and He broughtH7971 LotH3876 out of theH8432 catastropheH2018 that destroyedH2015 the citiesH5892 whereH834 he had livedH3427.

Lot and His Daughters

30LotH3876 andH5973 his twoH8147 daughtersH1323 leftH5927 ZoarH6820 and settledH3427 in the mountainsH2022—forH3588 he was afraidH3372 to stayH3427 in ZoarH6820—whereH1931H8147H1323 they livedH3427 in a caveH4631.

31One day the olderH1067 daughter saidH559 toH413 the youngerH6810, “Our fatherH1 is oldH2204, and there is noH369 manH376 in the landH776 to sleep withH935 usH5921, as is the customH1870 over allH3605 the earthH776. 32ComeH1980, let us get our fatherH1 drunkH8248 with wineH3196 so we can sleepH7901 with himH5973 and preserveH2421 his lineH2233.”

36Thus bothH8147 of Lot’sH3876 daughtersH1323 became pregnantH2029 by their fatherH1. 37The olderH1067 daughter gave birth toH3205 a sonH1121 and named himH7121H8034 MoabH4124.2 HeH1931 is the fatherH1 of the MoabitesH4124 ofH5704 todayH3117. 38The youngerH6810 daughter alsoH1571 gave birth toH3205 a sonH1121, and she namedH7121 himH8034 Ben-ammiH1151H1931.3 He is the fatherH1 of the AmmonitesH1121H5983 ofH5704 todayH3117.
