Genesis 48

1Some time laterH310H1697H428 JosephH3130H2009 was toldH559, “Your fatherH1 is illH2470.” So he set outH3947 withH5973 his twoH8147 sonsH1121, ManassehH4519 and EphraimH669. 2When JacobH3290H559H2009 was toldH5046, “Your sonH1121 JosephH3130 has comeH935 to youH413,” IsraelH3478 rallied his strengthH2388 and sat upH3427 inH5921 bedH4296.

3JacobH3290 saidH559 toH413 JosephH3130, “GodH410 AlmightyH77061 appearedH7200 to meH413 at LuzH3870 in the landH776 of CanaanH3667, and there He blessedH1288 meH853 4and toldH559 meH413, ‘BeholdH2005, I will make you fruitfulH6509 and multiply youH7235; I will make youH5414 a multitudeH6951 of peoplesH5971, and will giveH5414 thisH2063 landH776 to your descendantsH2233 after youH310 as an everlastingH5769 possessionH272.’

5And nowH6258 your twoH8147 sonsH1121 bornH3205 to you in EgyptH776H4714 beforeH5704 I cameH935 to youH413 here shall be reckoned as mine; EphraimH669 and ManassehH4519 shall beH1961 mine, just as ReubenH7205 and SimeonH8095 are mine. 6Any childrenH4138 bornH3205 to you after themH310 shall be yoursH1961, and they shall be calledH7121 byH5921 the namesH8034 of their brothersH251 in the territory they inheritH5159.

7Now as for meH589, when I was returningH935 from PaddanH6307,2 to my sorrowH5921 RachelH7354 diedH4191 along the wayH1870 in the landH776 of CanaanH3667H5750, some distanceH3530H776H935 from EphrathH672. So I buried herH6912 thereH8033 beside the roadH1870 to EphrathH672” (thatH1931 is, BethlehemH1035).

8When IsraelH3478 sawH7200 the sonsH1121 of JosephH3130, he askedH559, “WhoH4310 are theseH428?”

9JosephH3130 saidH559 toH413 his fatherH1, “TheyH1992 are the sonsH1121 GodH430 has givenH5414 me in thisH2088 place.”

So Jacob saidH559, “PleaseH4994 bring themH3947 to meH413, that I may blessH1288 them.”

10Now Israel’sH3478 eyesightH5869 was poorH3513 because of old ageH2207; he couldH3201 hardlyH3808 seeH7200. Joseph broughtH5066 his sons to himH413, and his father kissedH5401 them and embracedH2263 them.

11“I neverH3808 expectedH6419 to seeH7200 your face againH6440,” IsraelH3478 saidH559 toH413 JosephH3130, “but nowH2009 GodH430 has let me seeH7200 your childrenH2233 as wellH1571.”

12Then JosephH3130 removedH3318 his sons fromH5973 his father’s kneesH1290 and bowedH7812 facedownH639H776.

13And JosephH3130 tookH3947 bothH8147 of themH853—with EphraimH669 in his right handH3225 toward Israel’sH3478 left handH8040, and ManassehH4519 in his left handH8040 toward Israel’sH3478 right handH3225—and brought them closeH5066 to himH413. 14But IsraelH3478 stretched outH7971 his right handH3225 and putH7896 it onH5921 the headH7218 of EphraimH669H1931, the youngerH6810; and crossingH7919 his handsH3027, he put his leftH8040 onH5921 Manasseh’sH4519 headH7218, althoughH3588 ManassehH4519 was the firstbornH1060. 15Then he blessedH1288 JosephH3130 and saidH559:

“May the GodH430 beforeH6440 whomH834 my fathersH1 AbrahamH85 and IsaacH3327 walkedH1980,the GodH430 who has been my shepherdH7462 all my lifeH5750 toH5704 thisH2088 dayH3117,16the angelH43973 who has redeemedH1350 meH853 from allH3605 harmH7451—may He blessH1288 these boysH5288.And may they be calledH7121 by my nameH8034and the namesH8034 of my fathersH1 AbrahamH85 and IsaacH3327,and may they growH1711 into a multitudeH7230 uponH7130 the earthH776.”

17When JosephH3130 sawH7200 thatH3588 his fatherH1 had placedH7896 his rightH3225 handH3027 onH5921 Ephraim’sH669 headH7218, he was displeasedH7489H5869 and tookH8551 his father’sH1 handH3027 to moveH5493 itH853 fromH5921 Ephraim’sH669 headH7218 toH5921H7218 Manasseh’sH4519. 18“NotH3808 soH3651, my fatherH1!” JosephH3130 saidH559. “ThisH2088 one is the firstbornH1060; putH7760 your right handH3225 onH5921 his headH7218.”

19But his fatherH1 refusedH3985. “I knowH3045, my sonH1121, I knowH3045!” he saidH559. “HeH1931 tooH1571 shall becomeH1961 a peopleH5971, and heH1931 tooH1571 shall be greatH1431; neverthelessH199, his youngerH6996 brotherH251 shall be greaterH1431 than heH4480, and his offspringH2233 shall becomeH1961 a multitudeH4393 of nationsH1471.”

20So that dayH3117 Jacob blessedH1288 themH1931 and saidH559:

“By you shall IsraelH3478 pronounceH559 this blessingH1288:‘May GodH430 makeH7760 you like EphraimH669 and ManassehH4519.’”

So he putH7760 EphraimH669 beforeH6440 ManassehH4519.

21Then IsraelH3478 saidH559 toH413 JosephH3130, “LookH2009, IH595 am about to dieH4191, but GodH430 will beH1961 with youH5973 and bringH7725 youH853 back toH413 the landH776 of your fathersH1. 22And to you, as one who is aboveH5921 your brothersH251, IH589 giveH5414 theH259 ridge of landH79264 thatH834 I tookH3947 fromH3027 the AmoritesH567 with my swordH2719 and bowH7198.”
