Genesis 40
1Some time laterH310H1697H428, the king’sH4428 cupbearerH4945 and bakerH644 offendedH2398 their masterH113, the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714. 2PharaohH6547 was angryH7107 withH5921 his twoH8147 officersH5631H5921, the chiefH8269 cupbearerH4945H5921 and the chiefH8269 bakerH644, 3and imprisoned themH5414 in the houseH1004 of the captainH8269 of the guardH2876, the same prisonH1004H5470H413H4725 whereH834 JosephH3130 was confinedH631H8033. 4The captainH8269 of the guardH2876 assignedH6485 themH854 to JosephH3130, and he became their personal attendantH8334.
After they had beenH1961 in custodyH4929 for some timeH3117, 5bothH8147 of these menH376—the EgyptianH4714 king’sH4428 cupbearerH4945 and bakerH644, whoH834 were being heldH631 in the prisonH1004H5470—had a dreamH2492H2472 on the sameH259H376 nightH3915, and each dreamH2472 had its own meaningH6623.
6When JosephH3130 cameH935 to themH413 in the morningH1242, he sawH7200 that they were distraughtH2196. 7So he askedH7592 the officialsH5631 of PharaohH6547 whoH834 were in custodyH4929 with himH854 in his master’sH113H559 houseH1004, “WhyH4069 are your facesH6440 so downcastH7451 todayH3117?”
8“We both had dreamsH2472H2492,” they repliedH559H413, “but there is no oneH369 to interpret themH6622.”
Then JosephH3130 saidH559 to themH413, “Don’tH3808 interpretationsH6623 belong to GodH430? Tell me your dreamsH5608H4994.”
9So the chiefH8269 cupbearerH4945 toldH5608 JosephH3130 his dreamH2472H559: “In my dreamH2472 thereH2009 was a vineH1612 before meH6440, 10and on the vineH1612 were threeH7969 branchesH8299. As itH1931 buddedH6524, its blossomsH5322 openedH5927 and its clustersH811 ripenedH1310 into grapesH6025. 11Pharaoh’sH6547 cupH3563 was in my handH3027, and I tookH3947 the grapesH6025, squeezedH7818 themH853 intoH413 his cupH3563, and placedH5414 the cupH3563 inH5921 his handH3709.”
12JosephH3130 repliedH559, “ThisH2088 is the interpretationH6623: The threeH7969 branchesH8299 are threeH7969 daysH3117H1992. 13WithinH5750 threeH7969 daysH3117 PharaohH6547 will lift upH5375 your headH7218 and restoreH7725 yourH5921 positionH3653. You will putH5414 Pharaoh’sH6547 cupH3563 in his handH3027, just asH4639 you didH7223 whenH834 you wereH1961 his cupbearerH4945. 14ButH3588H518 whenH834 it goes wellH3190 for you, pleaseH4994 rememberH2142 meH854 and showH6213 meH5978 kindnessH2617 by mentioning meH2142 toH413 PharaohH6547, that he might bring me outH3318 ofH4480 thisH2088 prisonH1004. 15ForH3588 I was kidnappedH1589 from the landH776 of the HebrewsH5680, and evenH1571 hereH6311 I have doneH6213 nothingH3808H3972 for whichH3588 they should have putH7760 meH853 in this dungeonH953.”
16When the chiefH8269 bakerH644 sawH7200 thatH3588 the interpretationH6622 was favorableH2896, he saidH559 toH413 JosephH3130, “IH589 tooH637 had a dreamH2472: There wereH2009 threeH7969 basketsH5536 of white breadH2751 onH5921 my headH7218. 17In the topH5945 basketH5536 were all sorts ofH3605 bakedH644 goodsH3978 for PharaohH6547H4639, but the birdsH5775 were eatingH398 themH853 out ofH4480 the basketH5536 onH5921 my headH7218.”
18JosephH3130H559 repliedH6030, “ThisH2088 is the interpretationH6623: The threeH7969 basketsH5536 are threeH7969 daysH3117H1992. 19WithinH5750 threeH7969 daysH3117 PharaohH6547 will lift offH5375 your headH7218H5921 and hangH8518 youH853 onH5921 a treeH6086.1 Then the birdsH5775 will eatH398 the fleshH1320 of your bodyH5921.”
On the thirdH7992 dayH3117, which was Pharaoh’sH6547 birthdayH3117H3205, he heldH6213 a feastH4960 for allH3605 his officialsH5650, and inH8432 their presence he lifted upH5375 the headsH7218 of the chiefH8269 cupbearerH4945 and the chiefH8269 bakerH644. 21Pharaoh restoredH7725 the chiefH8269 cupbearerH4945 toH5921 his positionH4945, so that he once again placedH5414 the cupH3563 inH5921 Pharaoh’sH6547 handH3709. 22ButH853 Pharaoh hangedH8518 the chiefH8269 bakerH644, just asH834 JosephH3130 had describedH6622 to them in his interpretation.2
23The chiefH8269 cupbearerH4945, however, did notH3808 rememberH2142 JosephH3130; he forgot all about himH7911.
