The Descendants of Ishmael

(1 Chronicles 1:28–31)

12ThisH428 is the accountH8435 of Abraham’sH85 sonH1121 IshmaelH3458, whomH834 HagarH1904 the EgyptianH4713, Sarah’sH8283 maidservantH8198, boreH3205 to AbrahamH85. 13TheseH428 are the namesH8034 of the sonsH1121 of IshmaelH3458 in the order of their birthH8034H8435: NebaiothH5032 the firstbornH1060 of IshmaelH3458, then KedarH6938, AdbeelH110, MibsamH4017, 14MishmaH4927, DumahH1746, MassaH4854, 15HadadH2301, TemaH8485, JeturH3195, NaphishH5305, and KedemahH6929.

16TheseH428 wereH1992 the sonsH1121 of IshmaelH3458, and theseH428 were their namesH8034 by their villagesH2691 and encampmentsH2918—twelveH8147H6240 princesH5387 of their tribesH523. 17IshmaelH3458 livedH2416 a total ofH428H8141 137H3967H7970H8141H7651 yearsH8141. Then he breathed his lastH1478 and diedH4191, and was gatheredH622 toH413 his peopleH5971.

18Ishmael’s descendants settledH7931 from HavilahH2341 toH5704 ShurH7793, whichH834 is nearH5921 the borderH6440 of EgyptH4714 as you goH935 toward AsshurH804.1 And they livedH5307 in hostilityH5921 towardH6440 allH3605 their brothersH251.

Jacob and Esau

(Malachi 1:1–5; Romans 9:6–29)

19ThisH428 is the accountH8435 of Abraham’sH85 sonH1121 IsaacH3327. AbrahamH85 became the father ofH3205 IsaacH3327, 20and IsaacH3327 wasH1961 fortyH705 years oldH1121H8141 when he marriedH3947 RebekahH7259, the daughterH1323 of BethuelH1328 the ArameanH761 from Paddan-aramH6307H7582 and the sisterH269 of LabanH3837 the ArameanH761.

21Later, IsaacH3327 prayedH6279 to the LORDH3068 on behalf ofH5227 his wifeH802, becauseH3588 sheH1931 was barrenH6135. And the LORDH3068 heard his prayerH6279, and his wifeH802 RebekahH7259 conceivedH2029.

22But the childrenH1121 inside herH7130 struggled with each otherH7533, and she saidH559H518H3651, “WhyH4100 is thisH2088 happening to meH595?” So Rebekah wentH1980 to inquireH1875 of the LORDH3068, 23andH3068 He declared to herH559:

“TwoH8147 nationsH1471 are in your wombH990,and twoH8147 peoplesH3816 from within youH4578 will be separatedH6504;one peopleH3816 will be strongerH553 than the otherH3816,and the olderH7227 will serveH5647 the youngerH6810.”3

24When her timeH3117 cameH4390 to give birthH3205, there were indeedH2009 twinsH8380 in her wombH990. 25The firstH7223 one came outH3318 redH132H3605, covered with hairH8181 like a fur coatH155; so they named himH7121H8034 EsauH6215.4 26AfterH310 thisH3651, his brotherH251 came outH3318 graspingH270 Esau’sH6215 heelH6119; so he was namedH7121H8034 JacobH3290.5 And IsaacH3327 was sixtyH8346 years oldH1121H8141 when the twins were bornH3205.

27When the boysH5288 grew upH1431, EsauH6215 becameH1961 a skillfulH3045 hunterH6718, a manH376 of the fieldH7704, while JacobH3290H376 was a quietH8535 manH376 who stayedH3427 at homeH168. 28BecauseH3588 IsaacH3327 had a tasteH6310 for wild gameH6718, he lovedH157 EsauH6215; but RebekahH7259 lovedH157 JacobH3290.

Esau Sells His Birthright

29One day, while JacobH3290 was cookingH2102 some stewH5138, EsauH6215 came inH935 fromH4480 the fieldH7704 andH1931 was famishedH5889. 30HeH6215 saidH559 toH413 JacobH3290, “Let me eatH3938H4994 some ofH4480 thatH2088 redH122 stew, forH3588 I amH595 famishedH5889.” (That is whyH5921H3651 he was also calledH7121H8034 EdomH123.6)

31“FirstH3117 sellH4376 me your birthrightH1062,” JacobH3290 repliedH559.

32“LookH2009,” saidH559 EsauH6215, “I amH595 about to dieH1980H4191, so what goodH4100H2088 is a birthrightH1062 to me?”

33“Swear to me firstH7650,” JacobH3290 saidH559.

So Esau sworeH7650 to Jacob and soldH4376 himH3290 the birthrightH1062. 34Then JacobH3290 gaveH5414 some breadH3899 and lentilH5742 stewH5138 to EsauH6215, who ateH398 and drankH8354 and then got upH6965 and went awayH1980. Thus EsauH6215 despisedH959 his birthrightH1062.
