Genesis 39

1Meanwhile, JosephH3130 had been taken downH3381 to EgyptH4714, where an EgyptianH4713 named PotipharH6318, an officerH5631 of PharaohH6547 and captainH8269 of the guardH2876H376, bought himH7069 fromH3027 the IshmaelitesH3459 whoH834 had taken himH3381 thereH8033. 2And the LORDH3068 wasH1961 withH854 JosephH3130, and he becameH1961 a successfulH6743 manH376, servingH1961 in the householdH1004 of his EgyptianH4713 masterH113.

3When his masterH113 sawH7200 thatH3588 the LORDH3068 was with himH854 and made him prosperH6743H3027 in allH3605 heH1931 didH6213, 4JosephH3130 foundH4672 favorH2580 in his sightH5869 and became his personal attendantH8334.

Potiphar put himH6485 in charge ofH5921 his householdH1004 and entrustedH5414 himH3027 with everythingH3605 he ownedH3426. 5From the timeH227 that he put Joseph in chargeH6485 of his householdH1004 andH5921 allH3605 he ownedH3426, the LORDH3068 blessedH1288 the Egyptian’sH4713 householdH1004 on account ofH1558 him. The LORD’sH3068 blessingH1293 was on everythingH3605 he ownedH3426, both in his houseH1004 and in his fieldH7704. 6So Potiphar leftH5800 allH3605 thatH834 he owned in Joseph’sH3130 careH3027; he did notH3808 concern himselfH3045H854 with anythingH3972 exceptH3588H518 the foodH3899 heH1931 ateH398.

Now JosephH3130 wasH1961 well-builtH3303H8389 and handsomeH3303H4758, 7andH1961 after some timeH310H1697H428 his master’sH113 wifeH802 castH5375 her eyesH5869 uponH413 JosephH3130 and saidH559, “SleepH7901 with meH5973.”

8But he refusedH3985. “LookH2005,” he saidH559 toH413 his master’sH113 wifeH802, “with me hereH854, my masterH113 does notH3808 concern himselfH3045 with anythingH4100 in his houseH1004, and he has entrustedH5414 everythingH3605 he ownsH3426 to my careH3027. 9NoH369 one in thisH2088 houseH1004 is greaterH1419 than I amH4480. He has withheldH2820 nothingH3808H3972 from meH4480 exceptH3588 youH518, becauseH834 youH859 are his wifeH802. So howH349 could I doH6213 suchH2063 a greatH1419 evilH7451 and sinH2398 against GodH430?”

10AlthoughH1961 Potiphar’s wife spokeH1696 toH413 JosephH3130 dayH3117 after dayH3117, he refusedH3808H8085H413 to go to bedH7901 with herH681 or even beH1961 near herH5973. 11One dayH3117H2088, howeverH1961, Joseph wentH935 into the houseH1004 to attend toH6213 his workH4399, and notH369 a singleH376 householdH1004 servantH582 was insideH1004. 12She grabbedH8610 Joseph by his cloakH899 and saidH559, “SleepH7901 with meH5973!” But leavingH5800 his cloakH899 in her handH3027, he escapedH5127 and ranH3318 outsideH2351.

13

Joseph Falsely Imprisoned

When she sawH7200 thatH3588 he had leftH5800 his cloakH899 in her handH3027 and had runH5127 outH2351 of the house, 14she calledH7121 her householdH1004 servantsH582. “LookH7200,” she saidH559, “this HebrewH5680H376 has been broughtH935 to us to make sportH6711 of us. He cameH935 to meH413 so he could sleepH7901 with meH5973, but I screamedH7121 as loudH6963 as I couldH1419. 15When he heard meH8085H3588 scream for helpH7311H6963H7121, he leftH5800 his cloakH899 beside meH681 and ranH5127H3318 outH2351 of the house.”

16So Potiphar’s wife keptH5117 Joseph’s cloakH899 beside herH681 untilH5704 his masterH113H413 cameH935 homeH1004. 17Then she told himH1696H413 the sameH428H559 storyH1697: “The HebrewH5680 slaveH5650 you broughtH935 usH413 cameH935 to me to make sportH6711 of me, 18but when I screamed for helpH7311H6963H7121, he leftH5800 his cloakH899 beside meH681 and ranH5127 outH2351 of the house.”

19WhenH1961 his masterH113 heardH8085 the storyH1697 his wifeH802 toldH1696 himH413, sayingH559, “ThisH428 is whatH1697 your slaveH5650 didH6213 to me,” he burnedH2734 with angerH639. 20So Joseph’sH3130 masterH113 tookH3947 himH853 and had him thrownH5414 intoH413 the prisonH1004H5470 whereH4725 the king’sH4428 prisonersH631 were confinedH631.

While Joseph wasH1961 thereH8033 in the prisonH1004H5470, 21the LORDH3068 wasH1961 withH854 him and extendedH5186 kindnessH2617 to himH413, granting himH5414 favorH2580 in the eyesH5869 of the prisonH1004H5470 wardenH8269. 22And the wardenH8269H1004H5470 putH5414 allH3605 the prisonersH615H834 under Joseph’sH3130 careH3027, so that heH1931 wasH1961 responsibleH6213 for allH3605 thatH834 was doneH6213 inH1004 the prisonH5470. 23The wardenH8269H1004H5470 did notH369 concern himselfH7200 with anythingH3605H3972 under Joseph’s careH3027, becauseH834 the LORDH3068 was withH854 Joseph and gave him successH6743 in whateverH834 heH1931 didH6213.
