Genesis 29

1JacobH3290 resumed his journeyH5375H7272 and cameH1980 to the landH776 of the peopleH1121 of the eastH6924. 2He lookedH7200 and sawH2009 a wellH875 in the fieldH7704, andH2009 near itH8033H5921 layH7257 threeH7969 flocksH5739 of sheepH6629, becauseH3588 the sheepH5739 were wateredH8248 fromH4480 thisH1931 wellH875. And a largeH1419 stoneH68 coveredH5921 the mouthH6310 of the wellH875. 3When allH3605 the flocksH5739 had been gatheredH622 thereH8033, the shepherds would roll awayH1556 the stoneH68 fromH5921 the mouthH6310 of the wellH875 and waterH8248 the sheepH6629. Then they would returnH7725 the stoneH68 to its placeH4725 overH5921 the mouthH6310 of the wellH875.

4“My brothersH251,” JacobH3290 askedH559 the shepherds, “whereH370 are you fromH859?”

“We areH587 from HaranH2771,” they answeredH559.

5“Do you knowH3045 LabanH3837 the grandsonH1121 of NahorH5152?” Jacob askedH559.

“We know himH3045,” they repliedH559.

6“Is he wellH7965?” Jacob inquiredH559.

“YesH7965,” they answeredH559, “and hereH2009 comesH935 his daughterH1323 RachelH7354 withH5973 his sheepH6629.”

7“LookH2005,” said JacobH559, “it is stillH5750 broadH1419 daylightH3117; it is not yetH3808 timeH6256 to gatherH622 the livestockH4735. WaterH8248 the sheepH6629 and take them backH1980 to pastureH7462.”

8But they repliedH559, “We cannotH3808H3201, untilH5704 allH3605 the flocksH5739 have been gatheredH622 and the stoneH68 has been rolledH1556 away fromH5921 the mouthH6310 of the wellH875. Then we will waterH8248 the sheepH6629.”

9WhileH5750 he was still speakingH1696 with themH5973, RachelH7354 arrivedH935 withH5973 her father’sH1 sheepH6629, forH3588 sheH1931 was a shepherdessH7462. 10As soon asH834 JacobH3290 sawH7200 RachelH7354, the daughterH1323 of his mother’sH517 brotherH251 LabanH3837, with Laban’sH3837 sheepH6629, heH3290 went upH5066 and rolledH1556 the stoneH68 away fromH5921 the mouthH6310 of the wellH875 and wateredH8248 his uncle’sH251H517H3837 sheepH6629. 11Then JacobH3290 kissedH5401 RachelH7354 and weptH1058 aloudH5375. 12HeH3290 toldH5046 RachelH7354 thatH3588 he wasH1931 Rebekah’sH7259H1931 sonH1121H3588, a relativeH251 of her fatherH1, and she ranH7323 and toldH5046 her fatherH1.

13

When LabanH3837 heardH8085 the newsH8088 about his sister’sH269 sonH1121 JacobH3290, he ran outH7323 to meet himH7122. He embracedH2263 him and kissedH5401 him and brought himH935 toH413 his homeH1004, where Jacob toldH5608 himH3837 allH3605 that had happenedH1697H428.

Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel

14Then LabanH3837 declaredH559, “You areH859 indeedH389 my own fleshH1320 and bloodH6106.”

After Jacob had stayedH3427 with himH5973 a monthH2320H3117, 15LabanH3837 saidH559 to himH3290, “Just becauseH3588 you areH859 my relativeH251, should you workH5647 for nothingH2600? TellH5046 me whatH4100 your wages should beH4909.”

16Now LabanH3837 had twoH8147 daughtersH1323; the olderH1419 was namedH8034 LeahH3812, and the youngerH6996 was namedH8034 RachelH7354. 17LeahH3812 had weakH7390 eyesH5869,1 but RachelH7354 wasH1961 shapelyH3303H8389 and beautifulH3303H4758. 18Since JacobH3290 lovedH157 RachelH7354, he answeredH559, “I will serveH5647 you sevenH7651 yearsH8141 for your youngerH6996 daughterH1323 RachelH7354.”

19LabanH3837 repliedH559, “BetterH2896 that I giveH5414 herH853 to you thanH5414 to anotherH312. Stay hereH3427 with meH5978.” 20So JacobH3290 servedH5647 sevenH7651 yearsH8141 for RachelH7354, yet it seemedH1961 but a fewH259 daysH3117 because of his loveH160 for herH853.

21Finally JacobH3290 saidH559 toH413 LabanH3837, “GrantH3051 meH853 my wifeH802, forH3588 my timeH3117 is completeH4390, and I want to sleep withH935 herH413.”

22

So LabanH3837 invited allH3605 the menH582 of that placeH4725 and preparedH6213 a feastH4960. 23But whenH1961 evening cameH6153, Laban tookH3947 his daughterH1323 LeahH3812 and gaveH935 herH853 to JacobH413, and he slept withH935 herH413. 24And LabanH3837 gaveH5414 his servant girlH8198 ZilpahH2153 to his daughterH1323 LeahH3812 as her maidservantH8198.

25When morningH1242 cameH1961, thereH2009H1931 was LeahH3812! “WhatH4100H2063 have you doneH6213 to me?” Jacob saidH559 toH413 LabanH3837. “Wasn’tH3808 it for RachelH7354 that I servedH5647 youH5973? WhyH4100 have you deceived meH7411?”

26LabanH3837 repliedH559, “It is notH3808 our customH6213H3651 hereH4725 to give the younger daughterH6810 in marriageH5414 beforeH6440 the olderH1067. 27FinishH4390 thisH2063 week’s celebrationH7620H1571, and we will giveH5414 you the younger oneH2063 in return forH5647 anotherH5750H312 sevenH7651 yearsH8141 of workH5656.”

28And JacobH3290 didH6213 just thatH3651. He finishedH4390 the week’s celebrationH7620H2063, and Laban gaveH5414 himH853 his daughterH1323 RachelH7354 as his wifeH802. 29Laban alsoH3837 gaveH5414 his servant girlH8198 BilhahH1090 to his daughterH1323 RachelH7354 as her maidservantH8198.

30Jacob slept withH935H413 RachelH7354 as wellH1571, and indeedH1571, he lovedH157 RachelH7354 more than LeahH3812. So he workedH5647 forH5973 LabanH5750 anotherH312 sevenH7651 yearsH8141.

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah

31When the LORDH3068 sawH7200 thatH3588 LeahH3812 was unlovedH8130, He openedH6605 her wombH7358; but RachelH7354 was barrenH6135. 32And LeahH3812 conceivedH2029 and gave birth toH3205 a sonH1121, and she named himH7121H8034 ReubenH7205,2 forH3588 she saidH559, “The LORDH3068 has seenH7200 my afflictionH6040H3588. SurelyH3588 my husbandH376 will love meH157 nowH6258.”

33AgainH5750 she conceivedH2029 and gave birth toH3205 a sonH1121, and she saidH559, “Because the LORDH3068H3588 has heardH8085 thatH3588 IH595 am unlovedH8130, He has givenH5414 me thisH2088 son as wellH1571.” So she named himH7121H8034 SimeonH8095.3

34Once againH5750 Leah conceivedH2029 and gave birth toH3205 a sonH1121, and she saidH559, “NowH6258 at lastH6471 my husbandH376 will become attachedH3867 to meH413, becauseH3588 I have borneH3205 him threeH7969 sonsH1121.” SoH5921H3651 he was namedH7121H8034 LeviH3878.4

35And once moreH5750 she conceivedH2029 and gave birth toH3205 a sonH1121 and saidH559, “This timeH6471 I will praiseH3034 the LORDH3068.” SoH5921H3651 she named himH7121H8034 JudahH3063.5 Then Leah stoppedH5975 having childrenH3205.
