Genesis 31
Revised Version 1895
1And he heardH8085 the wordsH1697 of Laban’s sonsH1121, sayingH559, JacobH3290 hath takenH3947 awayH3947 allH3605 that was our father’sH1; and of that whichH834 was our father’sH1 hath he gotten allH3605 this gloryH3519. 2And JacobH3290 beheld the countenanceH6440 of LabanH3837, and, beholdH2009, it was notH369 towardH6440 him as beforetime. 3And the LORDH3068 saidH559 unto JacobH3290, ReturnH7725 unto the landH776 of thy fathersH1, and to thy kindredH4138; and I will be with thee. 4And JacobH3290 sentH7971 and calledH7121 RachelH7354 and LeahH3812 to the fieldH7704 unto his flockH6629, 5and saidH559 unto them, I seeH7200 your father’sH1 countenanceH6440, that it is notH369 towardH413 meH413 as beforetime; but the GodH430 of my fatherH1 hath been with meH413. 6And ye knowH3045 that with allH3605 my powerH3581 I have servedH5647 your fatherH1. 7And your fatherH1 hath deceived meH5414, and changedH2498 my wagesH4909 tenH6235 timesH4489; but GodH430 suffered him notH3808 to hurt meH5414. 8IfH518 he saidH559 thusH3541, The speckledH5348 shall be thy wagesH7939; then allH3605 the flockH6629 bare speckledH5348: and ifH518 he saidH559 thusH3541, The ringstraked shall be thy wagesH7939; then bare allH3605 the flockH6629 ringstraked. 9Thus GodH430 hath takenH5337 awayH5337 the cattleH4735 of your fatherH1, and givenH5414 them to meH5414. 10And it cameH1961 to passH1961 at the time that the flockH6629 conceivedH3179, that I liftedH5375 upH5927 mine eyesH5869, and sawH7200 in a dreamH2472, and, beholdH2009, the he-goats whichH5869 leaped uponH5921 the flockH6629 were ringstraked, speckledH5348, and grisled. 11And the angelH4397 of GodH430 saidH559 unto meH413 in the dreamH2472, JacobH3290: and I saidH559, HereH2009 am I. 12And he saidH559, LiftH5375 upH5927 nowH4994 thine eyesH5869, and seeH7200, allH3605 the he-goats whichH834 leap uponH5921 the flockH6629 are ringstraked, speckledH5348, and grisled: for I have seenH7200 allH3605 that LabanH3837 doeth unto thee. 13I am the GodH410 of Beth-el, whereH834 thou anointedst a pillarH4676, whereH834 thou vowedst a vowH5088 unto meH413: nowH6258 ariseH6965, getH6965 thee outH3318 from this landH776, and returnH7725 unto the landH776 of thy nativity. 14And RachelH7354 and LeahH3812 answeredH559 and saidH559 unto him, Is there yet anyH5750 portionH2506 or inheritanceH5159 for usH559 in our father’sH1 houseH1004? 15Are weH3588 notH3808 countedH2803 of him strangers? for he hath soldH4376 usH3588, and hath also quite devouredH398 our moneyH3701. 16For allH3605 the richesH6239 whichH834 GodH430 hath takenH5337 awayH5337 from our fatherH1, that is ours and our children’sH1121: nowH6258 then, whatsoeverH3605 GodH430 hath saidH559 unto thee, doH6213. 17Then JacobH3290 roseH6965 upH6965, and setH6965 his sonsH1121 and his wivesH802 uponH5921 the camelsH1581; 18and he carriedH935 awayH3605 allH3605 his cattleH4735, and allH3605 his substance whichH834 he had gatheredH7408, the cattleH4735 of his getting, whichH834 he had gatheredH7408 in Paddan-aramH6307, for to goH935 to IsaacH3327 his fatherH1 unto the landH776 of CanaanH3667. 19NowH1980 LabanH3837 was goneH1980 to shearH1494 his sheepH6629: and RachelH7354 stoleH1589 the teraphimH8655 that were herH1980 father’sH1. 20And JacobH3290 stoleH1589 awayH1272 unawares to LabanH3837 the SyrianH761, in that he toldH5046 him notH3588 that he fledH1272. 21SoH834 he fledH1272 with allH3605 that he had; and he roseH6965 upH6965, and passedH5674 over the RiverH5104, and setH7760 his faceH6440 towardH6440 the mountainH2022 of GileadH1568. 22And it was toldH5046 LabanH3837 on the thirdH7992 dayH3117 that JacobH3290 was fledH1272. 23And he tookH3947 his brethrenH251 with him, and pursuedH7291 afterH310 him sevenH7651 days’H3117 journeyH1870; and he overtookH1692 him in the mountainH2022 of GileadH1568. 24And GodH430 cameH935 to LabanH3837 the SyrianH761 in a dreamH2472 of the nightH3915, and saidH559 unto him, TakeH8104 heedH8104 to thyself that thou speakH1696 notH6435 to JacobH3290 eitherH5704 goodH2896 or badH7451. 25And LabanH3837 came upH853 with JacobH3290. Now JacobH3290 had pitchedH8628 his tentH168 in the mountainH2022: and LabanH3837 with his brethrenH251 pitchedH8628 in the mountainH2022 of GileadH1568. 26And LabanH3837 saidH559 to JacobH3290, WhatH4100 hast thou doneH6213, that thou hast stolenH1589 awayH7617 unawares to meH4100, and carriedH7617 awayH7617 my daughtersH1323 as captivesH7617 of the swordH2719? 27Wherefore didst thou fleeH1272 secretlyH2244, and stealH1589 awayH7971 from meH7971; and didst notH3808 tellH5046 meH7971, that I might have sentH7971 thee awayH7971 with mirthH8057 and with songsH7892, with tabret and with harpH3658; 28and hast notH3808 suffered meH5203 to kiss my sonsH1121 and my daughtersH1323? nowH6258 hast thou doneH6213 foolishlyH5528. 29It is in the powerH3027 of my handH3027 to doH6213 youH5704 hurt: but the GodH430 of your fatherH1 spake unto meH413 yesternight, sayingH559, TakeH8104 heedH8104 to thyself that thou speakH1696 not to JacobH3290 eitherH5704 goodH2896 or badH7451. 30And nowH6258, thoughH3588 thou wouldest needs be goneH1980, becauseH3588 thou sore longedst afterH3588 thy father’sH1 houseH1004, yet wherefore hast thou stolenH1589 my godsH430? 31And JacobH3290 answeredH559 and saidH559 to LabanH3837, BecauseH3588 I was afraidH3372: for I saidH559, LestH6435 thou shouldest takeH1497 thy daughtersH1323 from meH5973 by forceH1497. 32With whomsoever thou findest thy godsH430, he shall notH3808 liveH2421: beforeH5048 our brethrenH251 discernH3045 thou whatH4100 is thine with meH5978, and takeH3947 it to thee. For JacobH3290 knewH3045 notH3808 that RachelH7354 had stolenH1589 them. 33And LabanH3837 wentH3318 intoH935 Jacob’sH3290 tentH168, and intoH935 Leah’sH3812 tentH168, and intoH935 the tentH168 of the twoH8147 maidservants; but he foundH4672 them notH3808. And he wentH3318 outH3318 of Leah’sH3812 tentH168, and enteredH935 intoH935 Rachel’sH7354 tentH168. 34Now RachelH7354 had takenH3947 the teraphimH8655, and putH7760 them in the camel’sH1581 furniture, and satH3427 uponH5921 them. And LabanH3837 feltH4959 aboutH5921 allH3605 the tentH168, but foundH4672 them notH3808. 35And sheH3588 saidH559 to herH413 fatherH1, LetH408 notH3808 my lordH113 be angryH2734 that I cannotH3808 riseH6965 upH6965 beforeH6440 thee; for the mannerH1870 of womenH802 is uponH413 meH413. And he searchedH2664, but foundH4672 notH3808 the teraphimH8655. 36And JacobH3290 was wroth, and chode with LabanH3837: and JacobH3290 answeredH559 and saidH559 to LabanH3837, WhatH4100 is my trespass? whatH4100 is my sinH2403, that thou hast hotlyH1814 pursuedH1814 afterH310 meH310? 37Whereas thou hast feltH4959 aboutH1004 allH3605 my stuff, whatH4100 hast thou foundH4672 of allH3605 thy householdH1004 stuff? SetH7760 it hereH3541 beforeH5048 my brethrenH251 and thy brethrenH251, that they may judge betwixt usH3588 twoH8147. 38This twentyH6242 yearsH8141 have I been with thee; thy ewesH7353 and thy she-goats have notH3808 castH7921 their young, and the ramsH352 of thy flocksH6629 have I notH3808 eatenH398. 39That which was tornH2966 of beastsH2966 I broughtH935 notH3808 unto thee; I bare the lossH2398 of it; of my handH3027 didst thou requireH1245 it, whether stolenH1589 by dayH3117 or stolenH1589 by nightH3915. 40ThusH1961 I was; in the dayH3117 the drought consumedH398 meH398, and the frostH7140 by nightH3915; and my sleepH8142 fledH5074 from mine eyesH5869. 41TheseH2088 twentyH6242 yearsH8141 have I been in thy houseH1004; I servedH5647 thee fourteenH6240 yearsH8141 for thy twoH8147 daughtersH1323, and sixH8337 yearsH8141 for thy flockH6629: and thou hast changedH2498 my wagesH4909 tenH6235 timesH4489. 42ExceptH3588 the GodH430 of my fatherH1, the GodH430 of AbrahamH85, and the FearH6343 of IsaacH3327, had been with meH7971, surelyH3588 nowH6258 hadst thou sentH7971 meH7971 awayH7971 emptyH7387. GodH430 hath seenH7200 mine affliction and the labour of my handsH3709, and rebuked thee yesternight. 43And LabanH3837 answeredH559 and saidH559 unto JacobH3290, The daughtersH1323 are my daughtersH1323, and the childrenH1121 are my childrenH1121, and the flocksH6629 are my flocksH6629, and allH3605 that thou seest is mine: and whatH4100 canH4100 I doH6213 this dayH3117 unto theseH428 my daughtersH1323, or unto their childrenH1121 whichH834 they have borneH3205? 44And nowH6258 comeH1961, letH6258 usH996 makeH3772 a covenantH1285, I and thou; and letH6258 it be for a witnessH5707 betweenH996 meH589 and thee. 45And JacobH3290 tookH3947 a stoneH68, and setH7311 it upH7311 for a pillarH4676. 46And JacobH3290 saidH559 unto his brethrenH251, GatherH3950 stonesH68; and they tookH3947 stonesH68, and madeH6213 an heapH1530: and they didH6213 eatH398 there by the heapH1530. 47And LabanH3837 calledH7121 it Jegar-sahaduthaH3026: but JacobH3290 calledH7121 it GaleedH1567. 48And LabanH3837 saidH559, This heapH1530 is witnessH5707 betweenH996 meH5921 and thee this dayH3117. Therefore was the nameH8034 of it calledH7121 GaleedH1567: 49and MizpahH4709, for he saidH559, The LORDH3068 watchH6822 betweenH996 meH5641 and thee, when weH3588 are absentH5641 one from anotherH7453. 50IfH518 thou shalt afflictH6031 my daughtersH1323, and ifH518 thou shalt takeH3947 wivesH802 besideH5921 my daughtersH1323, noH369 manH376 is with usH5921; seeH7200, GodH430 is witnessH5707 betwixt meH5921 and thee. 51And LabanH3837 saidH559 to JacobH3290, BeholdH2009 this heapH1530, and beholdH2009 the pillarH4676, whichH834 I have setH3384 betwixt meH834 and thee. 52This heapH1530 be witnessH5707, and the pillarH4676 be witnessH5707, that I will notH3808 passH5674 over this heapH1530 to thee, and that thou shalt notH3808 passH5674 over this heapH1530 and this pillarH4676 unto meH413, for harmH7451. 53The GodH430 of AbrahamH85, and the GodH430 of NahorH5152, the GodH430 of their fatherH1, judgeH8199 betwixt usH996. And JacobH3290 sware by the FearH6343 of his fatherH1 IsaacH3327. 54And JacobH3290 offeredH2076 a sacrificeH2077 in the mountainH2022, and calledH7121 his brethrenH251 to eatH398 breadH3899: and they did eatH398 breadH3899, and tarried allH398 night in the mountainH2022. 55And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.
