3(For the PhariseesΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiG5330and allπάντεςpantesG3956the otherJewsἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiG2453do not eatἐσθίουσινesthiousinG2068unlessἐὰν μὴean mēG1437 G3361theycarefullyπυγμῇpugmēaG4435washνίψωνταιnipsōntaiG3538their handsχεῖρας,cheirasG5495, therebyholdingκρατοῦντεςkratountesG2902firmlyG2902to thetraditionπαράδοσινparadosinG3862of the eldersπρεσβυτέρων·presbuterōnG4245;

4and when they comefrom the marketplaceἀγορᾶςagorasG58,they do not eatἐσθίουσιν·esthiousinG2068unlessἐὰν μὴean mēG1437 G3361theycompletelyG907cleanseG907themselves; and there are manyG4183otherἄλλαallaG243thingsG4183whichἃhaG3739they have receivedπαρέλαβονparelabonG3880as traditionsto firmlyG2902holdG2902, such as thewashingβαπτισμοὺςbaptismousG909ofcupsποτηρίωνpotēriōnG4221,pitchersξεστῶνxestōnG3582,and copperG5473potsG5473.)

5And the PhariseesΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiG5330and the scribesγραμματεῖς·grammateisG1122askedἐπερωτῶσινeperōtōsinG1905Him, “Whyδιὰ τίdia tiG1223 G5101do Your disciplesμαθηταίmathētaiG3101not walkπεριπατοῦσινperipatousinG4043inG2596accordanceG2596withG2596thetraditionπαράδοσινparadosinG3862of the eldersπρεσβυτέρων,presbuterōnG4245,but eatἐσθίουσινesthiousinG2068their breadἄρτον;¶artonG740withunholyκοιναῖςkoinaisG2839handsχερσὶνchersinG5495?”

6But He saidG3004to them,“RightlyκαλῶςkalōsG2573did IsaiahἨσαΐαςĒsaiasG2268prophesyἐπροφήτευσενeprophēteusenG4395aboutπερὶperiG4012you hypocritesὑποκριτῶν,hupokritōnG5273,as it is writtenγέγραπταιgegraptaiG1125: ‘ThisοὗτοςhoutosG3778peopleλαὸςlaosG2992honorsτιμᾷ,timaG5091Me with their lipsχείλεσίνcheilesinG5491,But their heartκαρδίαkardiaG2588is farG4206awayπόρρω ἀπέχειporrō apecheiG568 G4206from Me.

7And inG3155vainμάτηνmatēnG3155do they worshipσέβονταίsebontaiG4576Me,TeachingδιδάσκοντεςdidaskontesG1321as doctrinesδιδασκαλίας,didaskaliasG1319the commandmentsἐντάλματαentalmataG1778of menἀνθρώπων.¶anthrōpōnG444.’

8NeglectingἈφέντεςAphentesG863the commandmentἐντολὴνentolēnG1785of GodθεοῦtheouG2316,you holdκρατεῖτεkrateiteG2902to thetraditionπαράδοσινparadosinG3862of menἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnG444.”

9He was alsoκαὶkaiG2532sayingἔλεγενelegenG3004to them,“You are expertsκαλῶςkalōsG2573at settingἀθετεῖτεatheteiteG114asideG114the commandmentἐντολὴνentolēnG1785of GodθεοῦtheouG2316inG2443orderG2443toG2443keepG5083yourtraditionπαράδοσινparadosinG3862.

10For MosesΜωϋσῆςMōusēsG3475saidG3004, ‘HonorτίμαtimaG5091your fatherπατέραpateraG3962and your motherμητέραmēteraG3384’; and, ‘The one who speaksG2551evilκακολογῶνkakologōnG2551ofG2551fatherπατέραpateraG3962orἢēG2228motherμητέραmēteraG3384, iscertainly to be putτελευτάτω.teleutatōG5053to deathθανάτῳthanatōG2288’;

11but you sayλέγετε·legeteG3004, ‘IfἐὰνeanG1437a personἄνθρωποςanthrōposG444saysG3004to his fatherπατρὶpatriG3962orἢēG2228his motherμητρί·mētriG3384,whateverἐὰνeanG3739 G1437I haveἐξexG1537that would helpὠφεληθῇς,ōphelēthēasG5623you isCorbanκορβᾶν,korbanG2878(that is,givenδῶρον,dōronG1435to God),’

12you noG3765longerG3765allowἀφίετεaphieteG863him to doποιῆσαιpoiēsaiG4160anythingοὐδὲνoudenG3762for hisfatherπατρὶpatriG3962orἢēG2228hismotherμητρίmētriG3384;

13therebyinvalidatingἀκυροῦντεςakurountesG208the wordλόγονlogonG3056of GodθεοῦtheouG2316by yourtraditionπαραδόσειparadoseiG3862whichᾗhēG3739you have handedπαρεδώκατε·paredōkateG3860downG3860;and you doποιεῖτε.¶poieiteG4160manyπολλὰpollaG4183thingsG4183suchπαρόμοιαparomoiaG3946as that.”

14After He calledπροσκαλεσάμενοςproskalesamenosG4341the crowdὄχλονochlonG3793to Him againπάλινpalinG3825, He begansayingἔλεγενelegenG3004to them,“ListenἀκούσατέakousateG191to Me, allπάντεςpantesG3956of you, and understandσύνετε.suneteG4920:

15there is nothingοὐδένoudenG3762outsideἔξωθενexōthenG1855the personἀνθρώπουanthrōpouG444which canδύναταιdunataiG1410defileκοινῶσαιkoinōsaiG2840him if it goesεἰσπορευόμενονeisporeuomenonG1531into him; but the things which comeG1607outG1607of the personἀνθρώπουanthrōpouG444are what defileκοινοῦνταkoinountaG2840the personἄνθρωπον.¶anthrōponG444.”

17And whenὅτεhoteG3753He laterenteredεἰσῆλθενeisēlthenG1525a houseοἶκονoikonG3624,awayἀπὸapoG575from the crowdὄχλου,ochlouG3793,His disciplesμαθηταὶmathētaiG3101askedἐπηρώτωνepērōtōnG1905Him about the parableπαραβολήν.parabolēnG3850.

18And He saidλέγειlegeiG3004to them,“Are you soοὕτωςhoutōsG3779lackingG801inG801understandingἀσύνετοίasunetoiG801asκαὶkaiG2532wellκαὶkaiG2532?Do you not understandνοεῖτεnoeiteG3539that whateverπᾶνpanG3956goesεἰσπορευόμενονeisporeuomenonG1531into the personἄνθρωπονanthrōponG444fromG1855outsideG1855cannotδύναταιdunataiG1410 G3756defileκοινῶσαι;koinōsaiG2840him,
