Jacob Moves to Bethel
1Then GodH430 saidH559 to JacobH3290, “AriseH6965, goH5927 upH5927 to 1BethelH1008 and liveH3427 thereH8033, and makeH6213 an altarH4196 thereH8033 to 2GodH410, who appearedH7200 to you 3when you fledH1272 4from your brotherH251 EsauH6215.” 2So JacobH3290 saidH559 to his 5householdH1004 and to allH3605 whoH834 were with him, “RemoveH5493 6the foreignH5236 godsH430 whichH834 are amongH8432 you, and 7purifyH2891 yourselves and changeH2498 your garmentsH8071; 3and let’s ariseH6965 and goH5927 upH5927 to BethelH1008, and I will makeH6213 8an altarH4196 thereH8033 to GodH410, 9who answeredH6030 me on the dayH3117 of my distressH6869 and 10has beenH1961 with me 11whereverH1870H834 I have goneH1980.” 4So they gaveH5414 JacobH3290 allH3605 the foreignH5236 godsH430 whichH834 12they hadH3027 and the ringsH5141 whichH834 were in their earsH241, and JacobH3290 hidH2934 them underH8478 the 13oakH424 whichH834 was nearH5973 ShechemH7927.
5As they journeyedH5265, there was 1415a greatH430 terrorH2847 upon the citiesH5892 whichH834 were aroundH5439 them, and they did not pursueH7291 the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290. 6So JacobH3290 cameH935 to 16LuzH3870 (that is, BethelH1008), whichH834 is in the landH776 of CanaanH3667, he and allH3605 the peopleH5971 whoH834 were with him. 7Then 17he builtH1129 an altarH4196 thereH8033, and calledH7121 the placeH4725 18El-bethelH416, becauseH3588 thereH8033 GodH430 had revealedH1540 Himself to him when he fledH1272 19from his brotherH251. 8Now 20DeborahH1683, Rebekah’sH7259 nurseH3243, diedH4191, and she was buriedH6912 belowH4480H8478 BethelH1008 underH8478 the oakH437; and it was namedH7121H8034 21Allon-bacuthH439.
Jacob Is Named Israel
9Then GodH430 appearedH7200 to JacobH3290 againH5750 when he cameH935 from Paddan-aramH6307, and He 22blessedH1288 him. 1023GodH430 saidH559 to him, “Your nameH8034 is JacobH3290; 24You shall noH3808 longerH5750 be calledH7121 JacobH3290, But IsraelH3478 shall be your nameH8034.” So He calledH7121 25him IsraelH3478. 11GodH430 also saidH559 to him, “I am 2627GodH410 AlmightyH7706; 28BeH6509 fruitfulH6509 and multiplyH7235; A nationH1471 and a 29multitudeH6951 of nationsH1471 shall 30comeH1961 from you, And 31kingsH4428 shall 32comeH3318 from 33you.12And 34the landH776 whichH834 I gaveH5414 to AbrahamH85 and IsaacH3327, I will giveH5414 to you, And I will giveH5414 the landH776 to your 35descendantsH2233 after you.” 13Then 36GodH430 wentH5927 upH5927 from him at the placeH4725 whereH834 He had spokenH1696 with him. 14So JacobH3290 setH5324 upH5324 37a memorialH4676 stoneH4676 in the placeH4725 whereH834 He had spokenH1696 with him, a memorialH4676 of stoneH68, and he pouredH5258 outH5258 a drinkH5262 offeringH5262 on it; he also pouredH3332 oilH8081 on it. 15And JacobH3290 namedH7121H8034 the placeH4725 whereH834H8033 GodH430 had spokenH1696 with him, 3839BethelH1008.
16Then they journeyedH5265 onH5265 from BethelH1008; but when there was stillH5750 someH3530 distanceH3530H776 to goH935 to 40EphrathH672, RachelH7354 began to giveH3205 birthH3205 and she sufferedH7185 severeH7185 difficultiesH7185 in her laborH3205. 17And when she was sufferingH7185 severeH7185 difficultiesH7185 in her laborH3205, the midwifeH3205 saidH559 to her, “Do not fearH3372, for 41you have anotherH1571 sonH1121!” 18And it cameH1961 aboutH1961, as her soulH5315 was departingH3318 (for she diedH4191), that she namedH7121H8034 him 42Ben-oniH1126; but his fatherH1 calledH7121 him 43BenjaminH1144. 19So 44RachelH7354 diedH4191 and was buriedH6912 on the wayH1870 to 45EphrathH672 (that is, BethlehemH1035). 20And JacobH3290 setH5324 upH5324 a memorialH4676 stoneH4676 overH5921 her graveH6900; that is the 46memorialH4676 stoneH4676 of Rachel’sH7354 graveH6900 to this dayH3117. 21Then IsraelH3478 journeyedH5265 onH5265 and pitchedH5186 his tentH168 beyondH4480H1973 the 4748towerH4029 ofH4029 49EderH4029.
The Sons of Israel
22And it cameH1961 aboutH1961, while IsraelH3478 was livingH7931 in that landH776, that 50ReubenH7205 wentH1980 and sleptH7901 with his father’sH1 concubineH6370 BilhahH1090, and IsraelH3478 heardH8085 about it.
Now there were twelveH8147H6240 sonsH1121 of JacobH3290-- 2351the sonsH1121 of LeahH3812 were ReubenH7205, Jacob’sH3290 firstbornH1060, then SimeonH8095, LeviH3878, JudahH3063, IssacharH3485, and ZebulunH2074; 2452the sonsH1121 of RachelH7354 were JosephH3130 and BenjaminH1144; 25and 53the sonsH1121 of BilhahH1090, Rachel’sH7354 femaleH8198 slaveH8198, were DanH1835 and NaphtaliH5321; 26and 54the sonsH1121 of ZilpahH2153, Leah’sH3812 femaleH8198 slaveH8198, were GadH1410 and AsherH836. TheseH428 were the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 whoH834 were bornH3205 to him in Paddan-aramH6307.
27JacobH3290 cameH935 to his fatherH1 IsaacH3327 at 55MamreH4471 of 56Kiriath-arbaH7153 (that is, HebronH2275), whereH834H8033 AbrahamH85 and IsaacH3327 had residedH1481.
28Now the daysH3117 of IsaacH3327 were 57180H3967H8084 yearsH8141. 29Then IsaacH3327 breathedH1478 his lastH1478 and diedH4191, and was 58gatheredH622 to his peopleH5971, an 59oldH2205 manH2205 60of ripeH7649 ageH3117; and 61his sonsH1121 EsauH6215 and JacobH3290 buriedH6912 him.
