19ThisαὕτηhautēG3778isthe testimonyμαρτυρίαmarturiaG3141of JohnἸωάννουIōannouG2491,whenὅτεhoteG3753the JewsἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiG2453sentἀπέστειλανapesteilanG649to him priestsἱερεῖςhi'ereisG2409and LevitesΛευίταςLeuitasG3019from JerusalemἹεροσολύμωνHi'erosolumōnG2414to askἐρωτήσωσινerōtēsōsinG2065him, “WhoτίςtisG5101are you?”

20And he confessedὡμολόγησενhōmologēsenG3670and did not denyἠρνήσατοērnēsatoG720,but confessedὡμολόγησενhōmologēsenG3670, “I amεἰμὶeimiG1510notthe Christχριστός.¶christosG5547.”

21They askedἠρώτησανērōtēsanG2065him, “WhatτίtiG5101thenοὖν;ounG3767? Are youElijahἨλίαςĒliasG2243?”And he saidλέγει·legeiG3004, “I amG1510not.” “Are youthe ProphetπροφήτηςprophētēsG4396?”And he answeredἀπεκρίθη·apekrithēG611, “NoG3756.”

22ThenοὖνounG3767they saidλέγειςlegeisG3004to him, “WhoτίςtisG5101are you, soἵναinaG2443that we may giveδῶμενdōmenG1325an answerἀπόκρισινapokrisinG612to thoseτοῖςtoisG3588who sentπέμψασινpempsasinG3992us? WhatτίtiG5101do you sayG3004aboutπερὶperiG4012yourselfG4572?”

23He saidἔφη·ephēG5346, “I ama voiceφωνὴphōnēG5456of one cryingβοῶντοςboōntosG994in the wildernessἐρήμῳ·erēmōG2048, ‘MakeG2116straightG2116the wayὁδὸνhodonG3598of the Lordκυρίου·kuriouG2962,’as IsaiahἨσαΐαςĒsaiasG2268the prophetπροφήτης.prophētēsG4396saidG3004.”

24NowκαὶkaiG2532they had beenἦσανēsanG1510sentἀπεσταλμένοιapestalmenoiG649from the PhariseesΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnG5330.

25They askedἠρώτησανērōtēsanG2065him, and saidG3004to him, “WhyτίtiG5101thenοὖνounG3767are you baptizingβαπτίζειςbaptizeisG907,ifεἰeiG1487you are not theChristχριστὸςchristosG5547,norοὐδὲoudeG3761ElijahἨλίαςĒliasG2243,norοὐδὲoudeG3761the Prophetπροφήτης;prophētēsG4396?”

26JohnἸωάννηςIōannēsG2491answeredἀπεκρίθηapekrithēG611them sayingλέγων·legōnG3004, “I baptizeβαπτίζωbaptizōG907in waterὕδατι·hudatiG5204, butamongμέσοςmesosG3319you standsG4739One whomὃνhonG3739you do not knowG3609.

27It isHe who comesἐρχόμενος,erchomenosG2064afterὀπίσωopisōG3694me, thethongἱμάνταhimantaG2438of whoseοὗhouG3739sandalὑποδήματος.hupodēmatosG5266I amεἰμὶeimiG1510not worthyἄξιοςaxiosG514to untieλύσωlusōG3089.”

28TheseG3778thingsταῦταtautaG3778tookG1096placeἐγένετοegenetoG1096in BethanyΒηθανίᾳBēthaniaG963beyondπέρανperanG4008the JordanἸορδάνουIordanouG2446,whereὅπουhopouG3699JohnἸωάννηςIōannēsG2491was baptizingβαπτίζων.¶baptizōnG907.

29The nextἐπαύριονepaurionG1887dayG1887he sawβλέπειblepeiG991JesusἸησοῦνIēsounG2424comingἐρχόμενονerchomenonG2064to him and saidλέγει·legeiG3004, “BeholdἴδεideG2396,the LambἀμνὸςamnosG286of Godθεοῦ,theouG2316whotakesG142awayαἴρωνairōnG142the sinἁμαρτίανhamartianG266of the worldκόσμου.kosmouG2889!

30ThisοὗτόςhoutosG3778is He on behalfὑπὲρhuperG5228of whomοὗhouG3739I saidG3004, ‘AfterὀπίσωopisōG3694me comesἔρχεταιerchetaiG2064a ManἀνὴρanērG435whoὃςhosG3739hasγέγονενgegonenG1096a higherG1715rankG1715than I,for He existedG1510beforeπρῶτόςprōtosG4413me.’

31I did not recognizeG3609Him, but soἵναinaG2443that He might be manifestedφανερωθῇphanerōthēaG5319to IsraelἸσραήλ,IsraēlG2474,I cameἦλθονēlthonG2064baptizingβαπτίζων.baptizōnG907in waterὕδατιhudatiG5204.”

32JohnἸωάννηςIōannēsG2491testifiedἐμαρτύρησενemarturēsenG3140sayingλέγωνlegōnG3004, “I have seenτεθέαμαιtetheamaiG2300the SpiritπνεῦμαpneumaG4151descendingκαταβαῖνονkatabainonG2597as a doveπεριστερὰνperisteranG4058out of heavenοὐρανοῦ,ouranouG3772,and He remainedἔμεινενemeinenG3306upon Him.

33I did not recognizeG3609Him, but He who sentπέμψαςpempsasG3992me to baptizeβαπτίζεινbaptizeinG907in waterὕδατι,hudatiG5204saidG3004to me, ‘He upon whomὃνhonG3739you seeG3708the SpiritπνεῦμαpneumaG4151descendingκαταβαῖνονkatabainonG2597and remainingμένονmenonG3306upon Him,thisοὗτόςhoutosG3778is the One who baptizesβαπτίζωνbaptizōnG907in the Holyἁγίῳ.hagiōG40SpiritπνεύματιpneumatiG4151.’

34I myselfκἀγὼkagōkaiG1473have seenἑώρακαhe'ōrakaG3708,and have testifiedμεμαρτύρηκαmemarturēkaG3140that thisοὗτόςhoutosG3778isthe SonυἱὸςhuiosG5207of Godθεοῦ.¶theouG2316.”

35AgainπάλινpalinG3825the nextἐπαύριονepaurionG1887dayG1887JohnἸωάννηςIōannēsG2491was standingεἱστήκειheistēkeiG2476with twoδύο.duoG1417of his disciplesμαθητῶνmathētōnG3101,

36and he lookedἐμβλέψαςemblepsasG1689at JesusἸησοῦIēsouG2424as He walkedπεριπατοῦντιperipatountiG4043,and saidλέγει·legeiG3004, “BeholdἴδεideG2396,the LambἀμνὸςamnosG286of Godθεοῦ.theouG2316!”

37The twoδύοduoG1417disciplesμαθηταὶmathētaiG3101heardἤκουσανēkousanG191him speakλαλοῦντοςlalountosG2980,and they followedἠκολούθησανēkolouthēsanG190JesusἸησοῦ.¶IēsouG2424.
