Darby Bible

1And it came to pass in the third yearH8141 of HosheaH1954 the sonH1121 of ElahH425, kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, that HezekiahH2396 the sonH1121 of AhazH271, kingH4428 of JudahH3063, began to reignH4427. 2He was twenty-five yearsH8141 old when he began to reignH4427; and he reignedH4427 twenty-nine yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389; and his mother's nameH8034 was Abi, daughterH1323 of ZechariahH2148. 3And he did what was rightH3477 in the sight of Jehovah, according to all that DavidH1732 his fatherH1 had done. 4He removedH5493 the highH1116 placesH1116, and brokeH7665 the columns, and cutH3772 down the Asherahs, and brokeH7665 in pieces the serpent of brass that MosesH4872 had madeH6213; for to those daysH3117 the children of IsraelH3478 burned incenseH6999 to it: and he calledH7121 it Nehushtan. 5He trustedH982 in Jehovah the 1GodH430 of IsraelH3478; so that after him wasH1961 none like him among all the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063, nor [among any] that were before him. 6And he clave to Jehovah, and did not turnH5493 asideH5493 from following him, but keptH8104 his commandmentsH4687, which Jehovah commandedH6680 MosesH4872. 7And Jehovah wasH1961 with him; he prospered whithersoever he wentH3318 forthH3318. And he rebelledH4775 against the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, and servedH5647 him not. 8He smote the PhilistinesH6430 unto Gazah and its bordersH1366, from the watchmen's towerH4026 to the fortified cityH5892. 9And it came to pass in the fourthH7243 yearH8141 of kingH4428 HezekiahH2396, which wasH1961 the seventhH7637 yearH8141 of HosheaH1954 the sonH1121 of ElahH425, kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, [that] ShalmaneserH8022 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 came up against SamariaH8111 and besieged it. 10And at the endH7097 of threeH7969 yearsH8141 they tookH3920 it; in the sixth yearH8141 of HezekiahH2396, that is, the ninth yearH8141 of HosheaH1954 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, SamariaH8111 was takenH3920. 11And the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 carried away IsraelH3478 to AssyriaH804, and settled them in HalahH2477 and by the HaborH2249, the riverH5104 of GozanH1470, and in the citiesH5892 of the Medes; 12because they hearkened not to the voiceH6963 of Jehovah their 2GodH430, but transgressed his covenantH1285, all that MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of Jehovah commandedH6680; and they would not hearH8085 nor do it. 13And in the fourteenth yearH8141 of kingH4428 HezekiahH2396, SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 cameH5927 up against all the fortifiedH1219 citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, and took them. 14And HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 sentH7971 to the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 to LachishH3923, sayingH559, I have sinnedH2398; retire from me: I will bearH5375 what thou layest upon me. And the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 laid upon HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 threeH7969 hundredH3967 talentsH3603 of silverH3701 and thirtyH7970 talentsH3603 of goldH2091. 15And HezekiahH2396 gaveH5414 all the silverH3701 that was foundH4672 in the houseH1004 of Jehovah, and in the treasuresH214 of the king's houseH1004. 16At that timeH6256 HezekiahH2396 stripped the doorsH1817 of the templeH1964 of Jehovah, and the posts that HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 had overlaidH6823, and gaveH5414 them to the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. 17And the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 sentH7971 Tartan and Rabsaris and Rab-shakeh from LachishH3923, with a strong force, against kingH4428 HezekiahH2396, to JerusalemH3389. And they wentH935 up and cameH935 to JerusalemH3389. And whenH834 they were comeH935 up, they cameH935 and stoodH5975 by the aqueduct of the upperH5945 poolH1295, which is on the highwayH4546 of the fuller's fieldH7704. 18And they calledH7121 to the kingH4428. Then cameH3318 forthH3318 to them EliakimH471 the sonH1121 of Hilkijah, who was over the householdH1004, and Shebnah the scribeH5608, and JoahH3098 the sonH1121 of AsaphH623, the chronicler. 19And Rab-shakeh saidH559 to them, SayH559 now to HezekiahH2396, ThusH3541 saysH559 the greatH1419 kingH4428, the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804: What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? 20Thou sayest — but it is a wordH1697 of the lipsH8193 — There is counselH6098 and strengthH1369 for warH4421. NowH6258 on whom dost thou relyH982, that thou hast revolted against me? 21NowH6258 behold, thou reliest upon the staffH4938 of that broken reedH7070, upon EgyptH4714, on which if a manH376 leanH5564, it goesH935 into his handH3709 and pierces it: soH3651 is PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 to all that relyH982 upon him. 22And if ye sayH559 to me, We relyH982 upon Jehovah our 3GodH430: is it not he whose highH1116 placesH1116 and whose altarsH4196 HezekiahH2396 has removedH5493, sayingH559 to JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389, Ye shall worship before this altarH4196 in JerusalemH3389? 23And nowH6258, engage, I pray thee, with my masterH113 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, and I will giveH5414 thee two thousandH505 horsesH5483, if thou canst setH5414 the ridersH7392 upon them. 24HowH349 then wilt thou turnH7725 awayH7725 the faceH6440 of oneH259 captain of the least of my master's servantsH5650? And thou reliest upon EgyptH4714 for chariotsH7393 and for horsemenH6571! 25Am I nowH6258 comeH5927 up without Jehovah against this placeH4725 to destroyH7843 it? Jehovah saidH559 to me, GoH5927 up against this landH776 and destroyH7843 it. 26And EliakimH471 the sonH1121 of Hilkijah, and Shebnah and JoahH3098 saidH559 to Rab-shakeh, SpeakH1696, we pray thee, to thy servantsH5650 in Syriac, for we understand it, and talk not with us in the Jewish [language] in the earsH241 of the peopleH5971 that are on the wallH2346. 27And Rab-shakeh saidH559 to them, Is it to thy masterH113 and to thee that my masterH113 sentH7971 me to speakH1696 these wordsH1697? Is it not to the menH376 that sitH3427 on the wallH2346, that they may eatH398 their own dung and drinkH8354 their own urine with you? 28And Rab-shakeh stoodH5975 and cried with a loud voiceH6963 in the Jewish [language], and spokeH1696 and saidH559, HearH8085 the wordH1697 of the greatH1419 kingH4428, the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804! 29ThusH3541 saysH559 the kingH4428: Let not HezekiahH2396 deceiveH5377 you; for he will not be ableH3201 to deliverH5337 you out of the [king's] handH3027. 30Neither let HezekiahH2396 makeH5414 you relyH982 upon Jehovah, sayingH559, Jehovah will certainly deliverH5337 us, and this cityH5892 shall not be givenH5414 into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. 31Hearken not to HezekiahH2396; for thusH3541 saysH559 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804: MakeH6213 peace with me, and comeH3318 out to me; and eatH398 every oneH376 of his vineH1612 and every oneH376 of his fig-tree, and drinkH8354 every oneH376 the watersH4325 of his own cisternH953; 32until I comeH935 and takeH3947 you awayH3947 to a landH776 like your own landH776, a landH776 of corn and wineH8492, a landH776 of breadH3899 and vineyardsH3754, a landH776 of olive-trees and of honeyH1706, that ye may liveH2421 and not dieH4191; and hearken not to HezekiahH2396, when he persuades you, sayingH559, Jehovah will deliverH5337 us. 33Have any of the 4godsH430 of the nationsH1471 deliveredH5337 at all his landH776 out of the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804? 34WhereH346 are the 5godsH430 of HamathH2574 and of ArpadH774? WhereH346 are the 6godsH430 of SepharvaimH5617, HenaH2012, and IvvahH5755? and have they deliveredH5337 SamariaH8111 out of my handH3027? 35Which are they among all the 7godsH430 of the countries, who have deliveredH5337 their country out of my handH3027, that Jehovah should deliverH5337 JerusalemH3389 out of my handH3027? 36But the peopleH5971 were silentH2790 and answered him not a wordH1697; for the king's commandH4687 was, sayingH559, AnswerH6030 him not. 37And EliakimH471 the sonH1121 of Hilkijah, who was over the householdH1004, and ShebnaH7644 the scribeH5608, and JoahH3098 the sonH1121 of AsaphH623, the chronicler, cameH935 to HezekiahH2396 with their garmentsH899 rent, and toldH5046 him the wordsH1697 of Rab-shakeh.
