2 Kings 18
American Standard Version
1Now it came to pass in the third yearH8141 of HosheaH1954 sonH1121 of ElahH425 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, that HezekiahH2396 the sonH1121 of AhazH271 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 began to reignH4427. 2TwentyH6242 and fiveH2568 yearsH8141 old was he when he began to reignH4427; and he reignedH4427 twentyH6242 and nineH8672 yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389: and his mother’sH517 nameH8034 was Abi the daughterH1323 of ZechariahH2148. 3And he did that which was rightH3477 in the eyesH5869 of Jehovah, according to all that DavidH1732 his fatherH1 had done. 4He removedH5493 the highH1116 placesH1116, and brake the pillarsH4676, and cutH3772 down the AsherahH842: and he brake in pieces the brazen serpent that MosesH4872 had madeH6213; for unto those daysH3117 the children of IsraelH3478 did burn incenseH6999 to it; and he calledH7121 it Nehushtan. 5He trustedH982 in Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478; so that after him wasH1961 none like him among all the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063, nor among them that were before him. 6For he clave to Jehovah; he departedH5493 not from following him, but keptH8104 his commandmentsH4687, which Jehovah commandedH6680 MosesH4872. 7And Jehovah wasH1961 with him; whithersoever he wentH3318 forthH3318 he prospered: and he rebelledH4775 against the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, and servedH5647 him not. 8He smote the PhilistinesH6430 unto GazaH5804 and the bordersH1366 thereof, from the towerH4026 of the watchmenH5341 to the fortified cityH5892.
9And it came to pass in the fourthH7243 yearH8141 of kingH4428 HezekiahH2396, which wasH1961 the seventhH7637 yearH8141 of HosheaH1954 sonH1121 of ElahH425 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, that ShalmaneserH8022 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 came up against SamariaH8111, and besieged it. 10And at the endH7097 of threeH7969 yearsH8141 they tookH3920 it: in the sixth yearH8141 of HezekiahH2396, which was the ninth yearH8141 of HosheaH1954 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, SamariaH8111 was takenH3920. 11And the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 carried IsraelH3478 away unto AssyriaH804, and put them in HalahH2477, and on the HaborH2249, the riverH5104 of GozanH1470, and in the citiesH5892 of the Medes, 12because they obeyed not the voiceH6963 of Jehovah their GodH430, but transgressed his covenantH1285, even all that MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of Jehovah commandedH6680, and would not hearH8085 it, nor do it.
13Now in the fourteenth yearH8141 of kingH4428 HezekiahH2396 did SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 comeH5927 up against all the fortifiedH1219 citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, and took them. 14And HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 sentH7971 to the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 to LachishH3923, sayingH559, I have offended; returnH7725 from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bearH5375. And the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 appointed unto HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 threeH7969 hundredH3967 talentsH3603 of silverH3701 and thirtyH7970 talentsH3603 of goldH2091. 15And HezekiahH2396 gaveH5414 him all the silverH3701 that was foundH4672 in the houseH1004 of Jehovah, and in the treasuresH214 of the king’sH4428 houseH1004. 16At that timeH6256 did HezekiahH2396 cutH7112 off the gold from the doorsH1817 of the templeH1964 of Jehovah, and from the pillars which HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 had overlaidH6823, and gaveH5414 it to the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. 17And the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 sentH7971 Tartan and Rab-sarisH7249 and Rabshakeh from LachishH3923 to kingH4428 HezekiahH2396 with a great army unto JerusalemH3389. And they wentH935 up and cameH935 to JerusalemH3389. And whenH834 they were comeH935 up, they cameH935 and stoodH5975 by the conduit of the upperH5945 poolH1295, which is in the highwayH4546 of the fuller’s fieldH7704. 18And whenH834 they had calledH7121 to the kingH4428, there cameH3318 out to them EliakimH471 the sonH1121 of HilkiahH2518, who was over the householdH1004, and Shebnah the scribeH5608, and JoahH3098 the sonH1121 of AsaphH623 the recorderH2142.
19And Rabshakeh saidH559 unto them, SayH559 ye now to HezekiahH2396, ThusH3541 saith the greatH1419 kingH4428, the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? 20Thou sayest (but they are but vain wordsH1697), There is counselH6098 and strengthH1369 for the warH4421. NowH6258 on whom dost thou trustH982, that thou hast rebelledH4775 against me? 21NowH6258, behold, thou trustest upon the staffH4938 of this bruised reedH7070, even upon EgyptH4714; whereon if a manH376 leanH5564, it will goH935 into his handH3709, and pierce it: soH3651 is PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 unto all that trustH982 on him. 22But if ye sayH559 unto me, We trustH982 in Jehovah our GodH430; is not that he, whose highH1116 placesH1116 and whose altarsH4196 HezekiahH2396 hath taken awayH5493, and hath saidH559 to JudahH3063 and to JerusalemH3389, Ye shall worship before this altarH4196 in JerusalemH3389? 23NowH6258 thereforeH6258, I pray thee, giveH5414 pledges to my masterH113 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, and I will giveH5414 thee two thousandH505 horsesH5483, if thou be ableH3201 on thy part to setH5414 ridersH7392 upon them. 24HowH349 then canst thou turnH7725 awayH7725 the faceH6440 of oneH259 captain of the least of my master’sH113 servantsH5650, and put thy trustH982 on EgyptH4714 for chariotsH7393 and for horsemenH6571? 25Am I nowH6258 comeH5927 up without Jehovah against this placeH4725 to destroyH7843 it? Jehovah saidH559 unto me, GoH5927 up against this landH776, and destroyH7843 it.
26Then saidH559 EliakimH471 the sonH1121 of HilkiahH2518, and Shebnah, and JoahH3098, unto Rabshakeh, SpeakH1696, I pray thee, to thy servantsH5650 in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speakH1696 not with us in the Jews’ language, in the earsH241 of the peopleH5971 that are on the wallH2346. 27But Rabshakeh saidH559 unto them, Hath my masterH113 sentH7971 me to thy masterH113, and to thee, to speakH1696 these wordsH1697? hath he not sentH7971 me to the menH376 that sitH3427 on the wallH2346, to eatH398 their own dung, and to drinkH8354 their own water with you? 28Then Rabshakeh stoodH5975, and cried with a loud voiceH6963 in the Jews’ language, and spake, sayingH559, HearH8085 ye the wordH1697 of the greatH1419 kingH4428, the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. 29ThusH3541 saith the kingH4428, Let not HezekiahH2396 deceiveH5377 you; for he will not be ableH3201 to deliverH5337 you out of his handH3027: 30neither let HezekiahH2396 makeH5414 you trustH982 in Jehovah, sayingH559, Jehovah will surely deliverH5337 us, and this cityH5892 shall not be givenH5414 into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. 31Hearken not to HezekiahH2396: for thusH3541 saith the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, MakeH6213 your peace with me, and comeH3318 out to me; and eatH398 ye every oneH376 of his vineH1612, and every oneH376 of his fig-tree, and drinkH8354 ye every oneH376 the watersH4325 of his own cisternH953; 32until I comeH935 and takeH3947 you awayH3947 to a landH776 like your own landH776, a landH776 of grainH1715 and newH8492 wineH8492, a landH776 of breadH3899 and vineyardsH3754, a landH776 of olive-trees and of honeyH1706, that ye may liveH2421, and not dieH4191: and hearken not unto HezekiahH2396, when he persuadeth you, sayingH559, Jehovah will deliverH5337 us. 33Hath any of the godsH430 of the nationsH1471 ever deliveredH5337 his landH776 out of the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804? 34WhereH346 are the godsH430 of HamathH2574, and of ArpadH774? whereH346 are the godsH430 of SepharvaimH5617, of HenaH2012, and IvvahH5755? have they deliveredH5337 SamariaH8111 out of my handH3027? 35Who are they among all the godsH430 of the countries, that have deliveredH5337 their country out of my handH3027, that Jehovah should deliverH5337 JerusalemH3389 out of my handH3027?
36But the peopleH5971 held their peace, and answered him not a wordH1697; for the king’sH4428 commandmentH4687 was, sayingH559, AnswerH6030 him not. 37Then cameH935 EliakimH471 the sonH1121 of HilkiahH2518, who was over the householdH1004, and ShebnaH7644 the scribeH5608, and JoahH3098 the sonH1121 of AsaphH623 the recorderH2142, to HezekiahH2396 with their clothesH899 rent, and toldH5046 him the wordsH1697 of Rabshakeh.
