Jeremiah 44

1This is the wordH1697 thatH834 cameH1961 toH413 JeremiahH3414 concerningH413 allH3605 the JewsH3064 livingH3427 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714H34271—in MigdolH4024, TahpanhesH8471, and MemphisH52972—and in the landH776 of PathrosH6624H559:3 2“This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, saysH559: YouH859 have seenH7200 allH3605 the disasterH7451 thatH834 I broughtH935 againstH5921 JerusalemH3389H5921 and allH3605 the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063; and beholdH2005, they lie today in ruinsH2723H3117 andH2088 desolationH369H3427 3because ofH6440 the evilH7451 they have doneH6213.

They provoked Me to angerH3707 by continuingH1980 to burn incenseH6999 and to serveH5647 otherH312 godsH430 that neitherH3808 theyH1992 nor youH859 nor your fathersH1 ever knewH3045. 4Yet I sentH7971 youH413 allH3605 My servantsH5650 the prophetsH5030 again and againH7925H7971,4 sayingH559: ‘Do notH408H4994 doH6213 thisH2063 detestableH8441 thingH1697 thatH834 I hateH8130.’

5But they did notH3808 listenH8085 or inclineH5186 their earsH241; they did notH3808 turnH7725 from their wickednessH7451 or stopH1115 burning incenseH6999 to otherH312 godsH430. 6Therefore My wrathH2534 and angerH639 poured outH5413 and burnedH1197 in the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 and in the streetsH2351 of JerusalemH3389, so that they have becomeH1961 the desolateH2723 ruinH8077 they are todayH3117H2088.

7So nowH6258, this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 GodH430 of HostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, saysH559: WhyH4100 are youH859 doingH6213 such greatH1419 harmH7451 toH413 yourselvesH5315 by cutting offH3772 fromH8432 JudahH3063 manH376 and womanH802, childH5768 and infantH3243, leavingH3498 yourselves withoutH1115 a remnantH7611? 8Why are you provoking Me to angerH3707 by the workH4639 of your handsH3027 by burning incenseH6999 to otherH312 godsH430 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714, whereH834 youH859 have goneH935 to resideH1481H8033?

As a resultH4616, you will be cut offH3772 andH4616 will becomeH1961 an object of cursingH7045 and reproachH2781 among allH3605 the nationsH1471 of the earthH776. 9Have you forgottenH7911 the wickednessH7451 of your fathersH1 andH853 of the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 andH853 their wivesH802, as well asH853 the wickedness thatH7451 youH853 andH7451 your wivesH802 committedH6213 in the landH776 of JudahH3063 and in the streetsH2351 of JerusalemH3389? 10ToH5704 thisH2088 dayH3117 they have notH3808 humbled themselvesH1792 or shown reverenceH3372, norH3808 have they followedH1980 My instructionH8451 or the statutesH2708 thatH834 I setH5414 before youH6440 andH6440 your fathersH1.

11ThereforeH3651 this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478H2005, saysH559: I will setH7760 My faceH6440 to bring disasterH7451 and to cut offH3772 allH3605 JudahH3063. 12And I will take awayH3947 the remnantH7611 of JudahH3063 whoH834 have resolvedH7760H6440 to goH935 to the landH776 of EgyptH4714 to reside thereH8033H1481; they will meet their endH8552. They will allH3605H776H4714 fallH5307 by the swordH2719 or be consumedH8552 by famineH7458. From the leastH6996 toH5704 the greatestH1419, they will dieH4191 by swordH2719 or famineH7458; and they will becomeH1961 an object of cursingH423 and horrorH8047, of vilificationH7045 and reproachH2781.

13I will punishH6485H5921 those who liveH3427 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714, just asH834 I punishedH6485H5921 JerusalemH3389, by swordH2719 and famineH7458 and plagueH1698, 14so that none ofH3808 the remnantH7611 of JudahH3063 who have goneH935 to resideH1481H8033 in EgyptH4714 willH1961 escapeH6412 or surviveH8300 to returnH7725 to the landH776 of JudahH3063, whereH834 theyH1992 longH5375 to returnH7725 and liveH3427H8033; forH3588 noneH3808 will returnH7725 exceptH3588H518 a few fugitivesH6412.”

The Stubbornness of the People

15Then allH3605 the menH582 who knewH3045 thatH3588 their wivesH802 were burning incenseH6999 to otherH312 godsH430, and allH3605 the womenH802 standing byH5975—a greatH1419 assemblyH6951—along with allH3605 the peopleH5971 livingH3427 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714 and in PathrosH6624H559,5 saidH6030 to JeremiahH3414, 16“As for the wordH1697 you have spokenH1696 to usH413 in the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068, we will notH369 listenH8085 to youH413! 17InsteadH3588, we will doH6213 everythingH3605 we vowedH1697 to doH3318H6310: We will burn incenseH6999 to the QueenH4446 of HeavenH8064 and offerH5258 drink offeringsH5262 to her, just asH834 weH587, our fathersH1, our kingsH4428, and our officialsH8269 didH6213 in the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 and in the streetsH2351 of JerusalemH3389.

At that time we had plentyH7646 of foodH3899H1961 and good thingsH2896, and we sawH7200 noH3808 disasterH7451. 18But from the timeH4480H227 we stoppedH2308 burning incenseH6999 to the QueenH4446 of HeavenH8064 and pouring outH5258 drink offeringsH5262 to her, we have lackedH2637 everythingH3605 and have been perishingH8552 by swordH2719 and famineH7458.”

19“Moreover,” said the women, “whenH3588 weH587 burned incenseH6999 to the QueenH4446 of HeavenH8064 and poured outH5258 drink offeringsH5262 to her, was it withoutH1107 our husbands’ knowledgeH582 that we madeH6213 sacrificial cakesH3561 in her imageH6087 and poured outH5258 drink offeringsH5262 to her?”

Calamity for the Jews

20Then JeremiahH3414 saidH559 toH413 allH3605 the peopleH5971H5921, both menH1397 andH5921 womenH802, who were answeringH6030 himH853, 21“As for the incenseH6999 you burnedH7002 in the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 and in the streetsH2351 of JerusalemH3389—youH859, your fathersH1, your kingsH4428, your officialsH8269, and the peopleH5971 of the landH776—did the LORDH3068 notH3808 rememberH2142 and bringH5927 this toH5921 mindH3820? 22So the LORDH3068 couldH3201 noH3808 longerH5750 endureH5375H6440 the evilH7455 deedsH4611H6440 and detestable actsH8441 you committedH6213, and your landH776 becameH1961 a desolationH2723, a horrorH8047, and an object of cursingH7045, withoutH369 inhabitantH3427, as it is thisH2088 dayH3117. 23BecauseH6440 you burned incenseH6999 and sinnedH2398 against the LORDH3068 and did notH3808 obeyH8085 the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068 or walkH1980 inH5921H3651 His instructionH8451, His statutesH2708, and His testimoniesH5715, thisH2063 disasterH7451 has befallen youH7122, as you see todayH3117H2088.”

24Then JeremiahH3414 saidH559 toH413 allH3605 the peopleH5971H413, including allH3605 the womenH802, “HearH8085 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, all thoseH3605 of JudahH3063 whoH834 are in the landH776 of EgyptH4714. 25This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, saysH559: As for youH859 and your wivesH802, you have spokenH1696 with your mouthsH6310 and fulfilledH4390 with your handsH3027 your wordsH559: ‘We will surely performH6213 our vowsH5088 thatH834 we have madeH5087 to burn incenseH6999 to the QueenH4446 of HeavenH8064 and to pour outH5258 drink offeringsH5262 to her.’ Go ahead, thenH6965, doH6965 what you have promisedH5088H6213! KeepH6213 your vowsH5088!

26NeverthelessH3651, hearH8085 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, all youH3605 people of JudahH3063 livingH3427 in EgyptH4714: BeholdH2005, I have swornH7650 by My greatH1419 nameH8034, saysH559 the LORDH3068, that neverH518 againH5750 willH1961 anyH3605 manH376 of JudahH3063 living in the landH776 of EgyptH4714 invokeH7121H6310 My nameH8034 or sayH559, ‘As surely as the LordH136 GODH3069 livesH2416.’

27

I am watchingH8245 over themH5921 for harmH7451 and notH3808 for goodH2896, and everyH3605 manH376 of JudahH3063 whoH834 is in the landH776 of EgyptH4714 will meet his endH8552 by swordH2719 or famineH7458, untilH5704 they are finished offH3615.

28Those who escapeH6412 the swordH2719 will returnH7725 fromH4480 EgyptH4714 to JudahH3063, fewH4962 in numberH4557, and the wholeH3605 remnantH7611 of JudahH3063 who wentH935 to dwellH8033H1481 in the landH776 of EgyptH4714 will knowH3045 whoseH4310 wordH1697 will standH6965, MineH4480 or theirs!

29ThisH2063 will be a signH226 to you thatH3588 IH589 will punishH6485 youH5921 in thisH2088 placeH4725, declaresH5002 the LORDH3068, so thatH4616 you may knowH3045 thatH3588 My threatsH1697 of harmH7451 against youH5921 will surely standH6965. 30This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559: BeholdH2005, I will deliverH5414 PharaohH6547 HophraH6548 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 into the handsH3027 of his enemiesH341H3027 who seekH1245 his lifeH5315, just asH834 I deliveredH5414 ZedekiahH6667 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 into the handH3027 of NebuchadnezzarH5019 kingH4428 of BabylonH894, the enemyH341 who was seekingH1245 his lifeH5315.”
