Jeremiah 42
Then allH3605 the commandersH8269 of the forcesH2428, along with JohananH3110 sonH1121 of KareahH7143, JezaniahH31531 sonH1121 of HoshaiahH1955, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 from the leastH6996 toH5704 the greatestH1419, approachedH5066 2JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030 and saidH559, “May our petitionH8467 comeH5307H4994 before youH6440; prayH6419H1157 toH413 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 on behalf ofH1157 thisH2063 entireH3605 remnantH7611. ForH3588 fewH4592 of us remainH7604 of the manyH7235, asH834 you can seeH7200 with your own eyesH5869. 3Pray that the LORDH3068 your GodH430 will tellH5046 us the wayH1870 we should walkH1980 and the thingH1697 we should doH6213.”
“I have heard youH8085,” repliedH559 JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030. “I will surelyH2005 prayH6419 toH413 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 as you requestH1697H1961, and I will tell youH5046 everythingH3605H1697 thatH834 the LORDH3068 answersH6030. I will notH3808 withholdH4513 a wordH1697 from you.”
Then theyH1992 saidH559 toH413 JeremiahH3414, “May the LORDH3068 beH1961 a trueH571 and faithfulH539 witnessH5707 against us ifH518 we do notH3808 act uponH6213 everyH3605 wordH1697 thatH834 the LORDH3068 your GodH430 sends youH7971 to tell usH413. 6WhetherH518 it is pleasantH2896 orH518 unpleasantH7451, we will obeyH8085 the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068 our GodH430 to whomH834 weH580 are sendingH7971 youH853, so thatH4616 it may go well with usH3190 whenH3588 we obeyH8085 the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068 our GodH430!”
AfterH7093 tenH6235 daysH3117H1961 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 toH413 JeremiahH3414, 8and he summonedH7121H413 JohananH3110 sonH1121 of KareahH7143H413, allH3605 the commandersH8269 of the forcesH2428 whoH834 were with himH854, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 from the leastH6996 toH5704 the greatestH1419.
Jeremiah toldH559 themH413, “ThusH3541 saysH559 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, toH413 whomH834 you sentH7971 meH853 to presentH5307 your petitionH8467: 10‘IfH518H7725 you will indeed stayH3427 in thisH2063 landH776, then I will buildH1129 you upH853 and notH3808 tear you downH2040; I will plantH5193 youH853 and notH3808 uproot youH5428, forH3588 I will relentH5162 ofH413 the disasterH7451 I have broughtH6213 upon you.
Do notH408 be afraidH3372 ofH6440 the kingH4428 of BabylonH894, whomH834 youH859 now fearH3373; do notH408 be afraidH3372 of himH4480, declaresH5002 the LORDH3068, forH3588 IH589 am withH854 you to saveH3467 youH853 and deliverH5337 youH853 from himH3027. 12And I will showH5414 you compassionH7356, and he will have compassionH7355 on youH853 and restoreH7725 youH853 toH413 your own landH127.’
But ifH518 youH859 sayH559, ‘We will notH3808 stayH3427 in thisH2063 landH776,’ and you thus disobeyH1115H8085 the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068 your GodH430, 14and if you sayH559, ‘NoH3808, butH3588 we will goH935 to the landH776 of EgyptH4714 and liveH3427 thereH8033, whereH834 we will notH3808 seeH7200 warH4421 or hearH8085 the soundH6963 of the ram’s hornH7782H3808 or hungerH7456 for breadH3899,’ 15thenH6258H3651 hearH8085 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, O remnantH7611 of JudahH3063! This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, saysH559: ‘IfH518 youH859 are determinedH7760H6440 to goH935 to EgyptH4714H935 and resideH1481 thereH8033, 16then the swordH2719 youH859 fearH3373 will overtakeH5381 youH853 thereH8033, and the famineH7458 youH859 dreadH1672H4480 will follow on your heelsH1692H310 into EgyptH4714, and you will dieH4191 thereH8033. 17So allH3605H582 whoH834 resolveH7760 to goH935 to EgyptH4714 to reside thereH8033 willH1961 dieH4191 by swordH2719 and famineH7458 and plagueH1698. Not oneH3808 of them willH1961 surviveH8300 or escapeH6412H6440 the disasterH7451 IH589 will bringH935 upon themH5921.’
ForH3588 this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, saysH559: ‘Just asH834 My angerH639 and wrathH2534 were poured outH5413 onH5921 the residentsH3427 of JerusalemH3389, soH3651 will My wrathH2534 be poured outH5413 on youH5921 if you goH935 to EgyptH4714. You will becomeH1961 an object of cursingH423 and horrorH8047, of vilificationH7045 and disgraceH2781, and you will neverH3808 seeH7200 thisH2088 placeH4725 againH5750.’
The LORDH3068 has toldH1696 youH5921, O remnantH7611 of JudahH3063, ‘Do notH408 goH935 to EgyptH4714.’ Know for sureH3045 thatH3588 I have warnedH5749 you todayH3117! 20ForH3588 youH5315H3588 have deceivedH8582 yourselvesH859 by sendingH7971 meH853 toH413 the LORDH3068 your GodH430, sayingH559, ‘PrayH6419 toH413 the LORDH3068 our GodH430 on our behalfH1157, and as for allH3605 thatH834 the LORDH3068 our GodH430H3651 saysH559, tell itH5046 to us and we will do itH6213.’
For I have toldH5046 you todayH3117, but you have notH3808 obeyedH8085 the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068 your GodH430 in allH3605 He has sent meH7971 to tell youH413. 22Now thereforeH6258, knowH3045 for sureH3045 thatH3588 by swordH2719 and famineH7458 and plagueH1698 you will dieH4191 in the placeH4725 whereH834 you desireH2654 to goH935 to resideH1481H8033.”
