Jeremiah 3
1“IfH2005 a manH376 divorcesH7971 his wifeH802 and she leavesH1980 himH854 to marryH1961H376 anotherH312, can he everH5750 returnH7725 to herH413? Would notH3808 suchH1931 a landH776 be completely defiledH2610? But youH859 have played the harlotH2181 with manyH7227 loversH7453— and you would returnH7725 to MeH413?” declaresH5002 the LORDH3068.2“Lift upH5375 your eyesH5869 toH5921 the barren heightsH8205 and seeH7200. Is there any place whereH375 you have notH3808 been violatedH7693? You satH3427 besideH5921 the highwaysH1870 waiting for your lovers, like a nomadH6163 in the desertH4057. You have defiledH2610 the landH776 with your prostitutionH2184 and wickednessH7451.3Therefore the showersH7241 have been withheldH4513, and noH3808 spring rainsH4456 have fallenH1961. Yet you haveH1961 the brazen lookH4696 of a prostituteH802H2181; you refuseH3985 to be ashamedH3637.
Judah Follows Israel’s Example
6Now in the daysH3117 of KingH4428 JosiahH2977, the LORDH3068 saidH559 to meH413, “Have you seenH7200 whatH834 faithlessH4878 IsraelH3478 has doneH6213? SheH1931 has gone upH1980 onH5921 everyH3605 highH1364H413 hillH2022 and underH8478 everyH3605 greenH7488 treeH6086 to prostitute herselfH2181 thereH8033. 7I thoughtH559 that afterH310 she had doneH6213 allH3605 these thingsH428, she would returnH7725 to MeH413. But she did notH3808 returnH7725, and her unfaithfulH901 sisterH269 JudahH3063 saw itH7200.
8She sawH72001 thatH3588 becauseH5921H3605H182 faithlessH4878 IsraelH3478 had committed adulteryH5003, I gaveH5414 herH853 a certificateH5612 of divorceH3748 and sent her awayH7971. YetH413 that unfaithfulH898 sisterH269 JudahH3063 had noH3808 fearH3372H1931 and prostituted herselfH2181 as wellH1571. 9Indifferent toH1961H6963 her own infidelityH2184, Israel had defiledH2610 the landH776 and committed adulteryH5003 with stonesH68 and treesH6086. 10YetH1571 in spite of allH3605 thisH2063, her unfaithfulH901 sisterH269 JudahH3063 did notH3808 returnH7725 to MeH413 with allH3605 her heartH3820, but onlyH3588H518 in pretenseH8267,” declaresH5002 the LORDH3068.
A Call to Repentance
(Hosea 14:1–3; Zechariah 1:1–6)
11And the LORDH3068 saidH559 to meH413, “FaithlessH4878 IsraelH3478 has shown herselfH5315 more righteousH6663 than unfaithfulH898 JudahH3063. 12GoH1980, proclaimH7121 thisH428 messageH1697 toward the northH6828:
14“ReturnH7725, O faithlessH7726 childrenH1121,” declaresH5002 the LORDH3068, “forH3588 IH595 am your masterH1166, and I will takeH3947 youH853—oneH259 from a cityH5892 and twoH8147 from a familyH4940—and bringH935 youH853 to ZionH6726. 15Then I will giveH5414 youH853 shepherdsH7462 after My own heartH3820, who will feedH7462 you with knowledgeH1844 and understandingH7919.”
16“In thoseH1992 daysH3117H1961, whenH3588 you multiplyH7235 and increaseH6509 in the landH776,” declaresH5002 the LORDH3068, “they will noH3808 longerH5750 discussH559 the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the LORDH3068. It will neverH3808 comeH5927 toH5921 mindH3820, and no oneH3808 will rememberH2142 it or miss itH6485, norH3808 will another oneH5750 be madeH6213.
17At thatH1931 timeH6256 they will callH7121 JerusalemH3389 The ThroneH3678 of the LORDH3068, and allH3605 the nationsH1471 will be gatheredH6960 in JerusalemH3389 to honor the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068. They will no longerH3808H5750 followH1980H310 the stubbornnessH8307 of their evilH7451 heartsH3820. 18In thoseH1992 daysH3117 the houseH1004 of JudahH3063 will walkH1980 withH5921 the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, and they will comeH935 togetherH3162 from the landH776 of the northH6828 toH5921 the landH776 thatH834 I gave to your fathersH1 as an inheritanceH5157.
