Jeremiah 48
(Isaiah 15:1–9)
1Concerning MoabH4124, this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, saysH559:
“WoeH1945 toH413 NeboH5015,forH3588 it will be devastatedH7703.KiriathaimH7156 will be capturedH3920 and disgracedH954;the fortressH4869 will be shatteredH2865 and dismantledH954.2There is noH369 longerH5750 praiseH8416 for MoabH4124;in HeshbonH28091 they deviseH2803 evilH7451 against herH5921:‘ComeH1980, let us cut her offH3772 from nationhoodH1471.’
You tooH1571, O people of MadmenH4086,2 will be silencedH1826;the swordH2719 will pursueH310 youH1980.3A voiceH6963 cries outH6818 from HoronaimH2773:‘DevastationH7701 and greatH1419 destructionH7667!’4MoabH4124H8085 will be shatteredH7665;her littleH6810 ones will cry outH2201.3
5ForH3588 on the ascentH4608 to LuhithH3872they weepH1065 bitterlyH1065 as they goH5927,andH3588 on the descentH4174 to HoronaimH2773criesH6818 of distressH6862 resoundH8085over the destructionH7667:6‘FleeH5127! RunH4422 for your livesH5315!BecomeH1961 like a juniperH6176 in the desertH4057.4’
7BecauseH3282 you trustH982 in your worksH4639 and treasuresH214,youH859 tooH1571 will be capturedH3920,and ChemoshH3645 will goH3318 into exileH1473withH3162 his priestsH3548 and officialsH8269.8The destroyerH7703 will moveH935 againstH413 everyH3605 cityH5892,and notH3808 one townH5892 will escapeH4422.The valleyH6010 will also be ruinedH6,and the high plainH4334 will be destroyedH8045,asH834 the LORDH3068 has saidH559.
9PutH5414 saltH6731 on MoabH4124,forH3588 she will be laid wasteH5323H3318;5her citiesH5892 will becomeH1961 desolateH8047,with no oneH369 to dwellH3427 in them.10CursedH779 is the one who is remissH7423in doingH6213 the workH4399 of the LORDH3068,and cursed isH779 he who withholdsH4513his swordH2719 from bloodshedH1818.
11MoabH4124 has been at easeH7599 from youthH5271,settledH8252H1931 like wineH413 on its dregsH8105;he has notH3808 been pouredH7324 from vesselH3627 toH413 vesselH3627or goneH1980 into exileH1473.SoH5921H3651 his flavorH2940 has remained the sameH5975,and his aromaH7381 is unchangedH3808H4171.12ThereforeH3651 beholdH2009, the daysH3117 are comingH935,declaresH5002 the LORDH3068,when I will sendH7971 to him wanderersH6808,who will pour him outH6808.They will emptyH7324 his vesselsH3627and shatterH5310 his jarsH5035.13Then MoabH4124 will be ashamedH954 of ChemoshH3645,just asH834 the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 was ashamedH954when they trusted inH4009 BethelH1008.
14HowH349 can you sayH559, ‘WeH587 are warriorsH1368,mightyH2428 menH582 ready for battleH4421’?15MoabH4124 has been destroyedH7703and its townsH5892 have been invadedH5927;the bestH4005 of its young menH970have gone downH3381 in the slaughterH2874,declaresH5002 the KingH4428,whose nameH8034 is the LORDH3068 of HostsH6635.16Moab’sH4124 calamityH343 is at handH7138H935,and his afflictionH7451 is rushingH4116 swiftlyH3966.17MournH5110 for him, all youH3605 who surround himH5439,everyoneH3605 who knowsH3045 his nameH8034;tellH559 howH349 the mightyH5797 scepterH4294 is shatteredH7665—the gloriousH8597 staffH4731!
18Come downH3381 from your gloryH3519; sitH3427 on parched groundH6772,O daughterH1323 dwellingH3427 in DibonH1769,forH3588 the destroyerH7703 of MoabH4124 has comeH5927 against you;he has destroyedH7843 your fortressesH4013.19StandH5975 byH413 the roadH1870 and watchH6822,O dwellerH3427 of AroerH6177!AskH7592 the man fleeingH5127 or the woman escapingH4422H559,‘WhatH4100 has happenedH1961?’20MoabH4124 is put to shameH954, forH3588 it has been shatteredH2865.WailH3213 and cry outH2199!DeclareH5046 by the ArnonH769thatH3588 MoabH4124 is destroyedH7703.
21JudgmentH4941 has comeH935 uponH413 the high plainH776H4334—uponH413 HolonH2473H413, JahzahH3096,6 andH5921 MephaathH4158,22uponH5921 DibonH1769H5921, NeboH5015, andH5921 Beth-diblathaimH1015,23uponH5921 KiriathaimH7156H5921, Beth-gamulH1014, andH5921 Beth-meonH1010,24uponH5921 KeriothH7152H5921, BozrahH1224H5921, and allH3605 the townsH5892 of MoabH776H4124,those farH7350 and nearH7138.
25The hornH7161 of MoabH4124 has been cut offH1438,and his armH2220 is brokenH7665,”declaresH5002 the LORDH3068.26“Make him drunkH7937,becauseH3588 he has magnified himselfH1431 againstH5921 the LORDH3068;so MoabH4124 will wallowH5606 in his own vomitH6892,and heH1931 will alsoH1571 becomeH1961 a laughingstockH7814.27WasH1961 notH3808 IsraelH3478 your object of ridiculeH7814?Was he ever foundH4672 among thieves?ForH3588 wheneverH1767 you speak of himH1697you shake your headH5110.
28AbandonH5800 the townsH5892 and settleH7931 among the rocksH5553,O dwellersH3427 of MoabH4124!BeH1961 like a doveH3123that nestsH7077 atH5676 the mouthH6310 of a caveH6354.29We have heardH8085 of Moab’sH4124 pomposityH1347,his exceedingH3966 prideH1343 and conceitH1363,his proudH1347 arroganceH1346 and haughtinessH7312 of heartH3820.30IH589 knowH3045 his insolenceH5678,”declaresH5002 the LORDH3068,“but it is futileH3808H3651.His boastingH907 is as emptyH3808 asH3651 his deedsH6213.
31ThereforeH5921H3651 I will wailH3213 forH5921 MoabH4124;I will cry outH2199 for allH3605 of MoabH4124;I will moanH1897 forH413 the menH582 of Kir-heresH7025.732I will weepH1058 for you, O vineH1612 of SibmahH7643,more than I weepH1065 for JazerH3270.Your tendrilsH5189 have extendedH5674 to the seaH3220;8they reachH5060 even toH5704 JazerH3270.9The destroyerH7703 has descendedH5307onH5921 your summer fruitH7019H5921 and grape harvestH1210.33JoyH8057 and gladnessH1524 are removedH622 from the orchardH3759and from the fieldsH776 of MoabH4124.I have stoppedH7673 the flow of wineH3196 from the pressesH3342;no oneH3808 treads themH1869 with shouts of joyH1959;their shoutsH1959 are notH3808 for joyH1959.
34There is a cryH2201 from HeshbonH2809 toH5704 ElealehH500;they raiseH5414 their voicesH6963 toH5704 JahazH3096,from ZoarH6820 toH5704 HoronaimH2773 and Eglath-shelishiyahH5697H7992;forH3588 evenH1571 the watersH4325 of NimrimH5249 have dried upH1961H4923.
35In MoabH4124, declaresH5002 the LORDH3068,I will bring an endH7673to those who make offeringsH5927 on the high placesH1116and burn incenseH6999 to their godsH430.36ThereforeH5921H3651 My heartH3820 lamentsH1993 like a fluteH2485 for MoabH4124;it lamentsH1993 like a fluteH2485 forH413 the menH582 of Kir-heresH7025,becauseH5921H3651 the wealthH3502 they acquiredH6213 has perishedH6.
37ForH3588 everyH3605 headH7218 is shavedH7144and everyH3605 beardH2206 is clippedH1639;onH5921 everyH3605 handH3027 is a gashH1417,and aroundH5921 every waistH4975 is sackclothH8242.38OnH5921 allH3605 the rooftopsH1406 of MoabH4124and in the public squaresH7339,everyoneH3605 is mourningH4553;forH3588 I have shatteredH7665 MoabH4124 like an unwantedH369H2656 jarH3627,”declaresH5002 the LORDH3068.39“HowH349 shatteredH2865 it is! How they wailH3213!HowH349 MoabH4124 has turnedH6437 his backH6203 in shameH954!MoabH4124 has becomeH1961 an object of ridiculeH7814 and horrorH4288to all thoseH3605 around himH5439.”
40ForH3588 this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559:
“BeholdH2009, an eagleH5404 swoops downH1675and spreadsH6566 his wingsH3671 againstH413 MoabH4124.41KiriothH7152 has been takenH3920,and the strongholdsH4679 seizedH8610.In thatH1931 dayH3117 the heartH3820 of Moab’sH4124 warriorsH1368will beH1961 like the heartH3820 of a womanH802 in laborH6887.42MoabH4124 will be destroyedH8045 as a nationH5971becauseH3588 he vaunted himselfH1431 againstH5921 the LORDH3068.
43TerrorH6343 and pitH6354 and snareH6341 await youH5921, O dwellerH3427 of MoabH4124,”declaresH5002 the LORDH3068.44“Whoever fleesH5211H6440 the panicH6343will fallH5307 intoH413 the pitH6354,and whoever climbsH5927 fromH4480 the pitH6354will be caughtH3920 in the snareH6341.ForH3588 I will bringH935 uponH413 MoabH4124the yearH8141 of their punishmentH6486,”declaresH5002 the LORDH3068.45“Those who fleeH5127 will standH5975 helplessH3581 in Heshbon’sH2809 shadowH6738,becauseH3588 fireH784 has gone forthH3318 from HeshbonH2809and a flameH3852 from withinH996 SihonH5511.It devoursH398 the foreheadsH6285 of MoabH4124and the skullsH6936 of the sonsH1121 of tumultH7588.46WoeH188 to you, O MoabH4124!The peopleH5971 of ChemoshH3645 have perishedH6;forH3588 your sonsH1121 have been takenH3947 into exileH7628and your daughtersH1323 have gone into captivityH7633.47Yet in the latterH319 daysH3117 I will restoreH7725 MoabH4124 from captivityH7622,10”declaresH5002 the LORDH3068.
