The Man with a Measuring Rod
(Zechariah 2:1–5)
1In the twenty-fifthH6242H2568 yearH8141 of our exileH1546, at the beginningH7218 of the yearH8141, on the tenthH6218 day of the monthH2320—in the fourteenthH702H6240 yearH8141 afterH310 JerusalemH5892 had been struck downH5221—on thatH2088 veryH6106 dayH3117 the handH3027 of the LORDH3068 wasH1961 upon meH5921, and He tookH935 meH853 thereH8033. 2In visionsH4759 of GodH430 He took meH935 toH413 the landH776 of IsraelH3478 and set meH5117 onH413 a veryH3966H5921 highH1364 mountainH2022, on whose southern slopeH5045 was a structureH4011 that resembled a cityH5892.
3So He tookH935 meH853 thereH8033, and I sawH2009 a manH376 whose appearanceH4758 was like bronzeH5178. HeH1931 was standingH5975 in the gatewayH8179 with a linenH6593 cordH6616 and a measuringH4060 rodH7070 in his handH3027. 4“SonH1121 of manH120,” he saidH1696 to meH413H376, “lookH7200 with your eyesH5869, hearH8085 with your earsH241, and pay attentionH7760H3820 to everythingH3605 IH589 am going to show youH7200, forH3588 thatH4616 is why you have been broughtH935 hereH2008. ReportH5046 to the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 everythingH3605 youH859 seeH7200.”
The East Gate
5And I sawH2009 a wallH2346 surroundingH5439 the temple areaH2351H1004. Now the length of the measuringH4060 rodH7070 in the man’sH376 handH3027 was sixH8337 long cubitsH5201 (each measuring a cubitH520 and a handbreadthH2948), and he measuredH4058 theH1146 wall to be oneH259 rodH7070 thickH7341 and oneH259 rodH7070 highH6967.
6Then he cameH935 toH413 the gateH8179 facingH834H6440H1870 eastH6921 and climbedH5927 its stepsH4609. He measuredH4058 the thresholdH5592 of the gateH8179 to be oneH259 rodH7070 deepH7341.2 7Each gate chamberH8372 was oneH259 rodH7070 longH753 and oneH7070H259 rod wideH7341, and there were fiveH2568 cubitsH5203 betweenH996 the gate chambersH8372. The inner thresholdH5592 of the gateH8179 byH681 the porticoH197H8179 facing inwardH1004 was oneH259 rodH7070 deep. 8Then he measuredH4058 the porticoH197 of the gatewayH8179 insideH1004;4 9it was eightH8083 cubitsH520 deep,5 and its jambsH352 were twoH8147 cubitsH520 thick.6 And the porticoH197 of the gatewayH8179 facedH1004 the temple.
10There were threeH7969 gate chambersH8372 on each sideH6311H7969 of the eastH6921 gateH8179H1870, each with the sameH259H7969 measurementsH4060, and the gatepostsH352 on either sideH6311 also had the sameH259 measurementsH4060. 11And he measuredH4058 the widthH7341 of the gatewayH8179 entranceH6607 to be tenH6235 cubitsH520,7 and its lengthH753H8179 was thirteenH7969H6240 cubitsH520.8
12In frontH6440 of each gate chamberH8372 was a wallH1366 oneH259 cubitH520 high, and the gate chambersH8372 were sixH8337 cubitsH520H259H1366 squareH6311. 13Then he measuredH4058 the gatewayH8179 from the roofH1406 of one gate chamberH8372 to the roofH1406 of the opposite oneH7341; the distance was twenty-fiveH6242H2568 cubitsH5209 from doorwayH6607 toH5048 doorwayH6607.
14Next he measuredH6213 the gatepostsH352 to be sixtyH8346 cubitsH520 high.10 The gatewayH8179 extended aroundH5439 toH413 the gatepostH352 of the courtyardH2691. 15And the distance fromH5921 the entranceH6440H2978 of the gatewayH8179 toH5921 the far end ofH6440 its innerH6442 porticoH197 was fiftyH2572 cubitsH520.11
16The gate chambersH8372H413 and their side pillarsH35212 hadH413 beveledH331 windowsH2474 all aroundH5439H3651 the insideH6441 of the gatewayH8179. The porticosH361 also had windowsH2474 all aroundH5439 on the insideH6441H413. Each side pillarH352 was decorated with palm treesH8561.
The Outer Court
17Then he brought meH935 intoH413 the outerH2435 courtH2691, and thereH2009 were chambersH3957 and a pavementH7531 laid outH6213 all aroundH5439 the courtH2691. ThirtyH7970 chambersH3957 facedH413 the pavementH7531, 18which flankedH3802 the gatewaysH8179 and corresponded toH5980 the lengthH753 of the gatesH8179H7531; this was the lowerH8481 pavementH7531.
19Then he measuredH4058 the distanceH7341 from the frontH6440 of the lowerH8481 gatewayH8179 to the outsideH2351 of the innerH6442 courtH2691; it was a hundredH3967 cubitsH52013 on the east sideH6921 as well as on the northH6828.
The North Gate
20He also measuredH4058 the lengthH753 and widthH7341 of the gatewayH8179 of the outerH2435 courtH2691 facingH6440H1870 northH6828. 21Its threeH7969 gate chambersH8372 on each sideH6311H7969, its side pillarsH352, and its porticoH361 all hadH1961 the same measurementsH4060 as the firstH7223 gateH8179: fiftyH2572 cubitsH520 longH753 and twenty-fiveH2568H6242 cubitsH520 wideH7341. 22Its windowsH2474, porticoH361, and palm treesH8561 had the same measurementsH4060 as those of the gateH8179 facingH6440H1870 eastH6921. SevenH7651 stepsH4609 led upH5927 to it, with its porticoH361 opposite themH6440.
23There was a gateH8179 to the innerH6442 courtH2691 facingH5048 the northH6828 gateH8179, just as there was on the eastH6921. He measured the distanceH4058 from gatewayH8179 toH413 gatewayH8179 to be a hundredH3967 cubitsH520.
The South Gate
24Then he led meH1980 toH1870 the south sideH1864, and I sawH2009 a gatewayH8179 facingH1870 southH1864. He measuredH4058 its side pillarsH352 and porticoH361, and they had the same measurementsH4060 as the othersH428. 25Both the gateway and its porticoH361 had windowsH2474 all aroundH5439, like the otherH428 windowsH2474. It was fiftyH2572 cubitsH520 longH753 and twenty-fiveH2568H6242 cubitsH520 wideH7341. 26SevenH7651 stepsH4609 led up to itH5930, and its porticoH361 was opposite themH6440; it had palm treesH8561 onH413 its side pillarsH352, oneH259 on each sideH6311H259.
27The innerH6442 courtH2691 also had a gateH8179 facingH1870 southH1864, and he measuredH4058 the distance from gatewayH8179 toH413 gatewayH8179 towardH1870 the southH1864 to be a hundredH3967 cubitsH520.
The Gates of the Inner Court
28Next he brought meH935 intoH413 the innerH6442 courtH2691 through the southH1864 gateH8179, and he measuredH4058 the southH1864 gateH8179; it had the same measurementsH4060 as the othersH428. 29Its gate chambersH8372, side pillarsH352, and porticoH361 had the same measurementsH4060 as the othersH428. Both the gateway and its porticoH361 had windowsH2474 all aroundH5439; it was fiftyH2572 cubitsH520 longH753 and twenty-fiveH6242H2568 cubitsH520 wideH7341. 30(The porticoesH361 aroundH5439 the inner court were twenty-fiveH6242H2568 cubitsH520 longH753 and fiveH2568 cubitsH520 deepH7341.14) 31Its porticoH361 facedH413 the outerH2435 courtH2691, and its side pillarsH352 were decorated with palm treesH8561H413. EightH8083 stepsH4609 led up to itH4608.
32And he brought meH935 toH413 the innerH6442 courtH2691 onH1870 the east sideH6921, and he measuredH4058 the gatewayH8179; it had the same measurementsH4060 as the othersH428. 33Its gate chambersH8372, side pillarsH352, and porticoH361 had the same measurementsH4060 as the othersH428. Both the gateway and its porticoH361 had windowsH2474 all aroundH5439. It was fiftyH2572 cubitsH520 longH753 and twenty-fiveH6242H2568 cubitsH520 wideH7341. 34Its porticoH361 faced the outerH2435 courtH2691, and its side pillarsH413 were decorated with palm treesH8561H413 on each sideH6311. EightH8083 stepsH4609 led up to itH4608.
35Then he brought meH935 toH413 the northH6828 gateH8179 and measuredH4058 it. It had the same measurementsH4060 as the othersH428, 36as did its gate chambersH8372, side pillarsH413, and porticoH361. It also had windowsH2474 all aroundH5439. It was fiftyH2572 cubitsH520 longH753 and twenty-fiveH6242H2568 cubitsH520 wideH7341. 37Its porticoH35215 faced the outerH2435 courtH2691, and its side pillarsH352 were decorated with palm treesH8561H413 on each sideH6311. EightH8083 stepsH4609 led up to itH4608.
Eight Tables for Sacrifices
38There was a chamberH3957 with a doorwayH6607 by the porticoH35216 in each of the inner gatewaysH8179. ThereH8033 the burnt offeringH5930 was to be washedH1740. 39Inside the porticoH197 of the gatewayH8179 were twoH8147 tablesH7979 on each sideH6311H8147H7979, on whichH413 the burnt offeringsH5930, sin offeringsH2403, and guilt offeringsH817 were to be slaughteredH7819.
40OutsideH2351, as one goes upH5927 to the entranceH6607 of the northH6828 gatewayH8179, there were twoH8147 tablesH7979 onH413 one sideH3802 and twoH8147 more tablesH7979 onH413 the otherH312 sideH3802 of the gate’sH8179 porticoH197. 41So there were fourH702 tablesH7979 insideH6311 the gatewayH8179 and fourH702 outsideH6311—eightH8083 tablesH7979 in allH413—on which the sacrifices were to be slaughteredH7819.
42There were also fourH702 tablesH7979 of dressed stoneH68H1496 for the burnt offeringH5930, each a cubitH520 and aH259 halfH2677 longH753, a cubitH520 and aH259 halfH2677 wideH7341, and aH259 cubitH520 highH1363.17 On theseH413 were placedH5117 the utensilsH3627 used to slaughterH7819 the burnt offeringsH5930 and the other sacrificesH2077.
43The double-pronged hooksH8240,18 each aH259 handbreadthH2948 long,19 were fastenedH3559 all aroundH5439 the inside of the roomH1004, and the fleshH1320 of the offeringH7133 was to be placed onH413 the tablesH7979.
Chambers for Ministry
44OutsideH2351 the innerH6442 gateH8179, within the innerH6442 courtH2691, were two chambersH3957,20 one besideH413H3802 the northH6828 gateH8179 and facingH6440H1870 southH1864, and anotherH259 besideH413H3802 the south gateH8179H692121 and facingH6440H1870 northH6828.
45Then the man saidH1696 to meH413: “TheH2090 chamberH3957 thatH834 facesH6440H1870 southH1864 is for the priestsH3548 who keepH8104 chargeH4931 of the templeH1004, 46and the chamberH3957 thatH834 facesH6440H1870 northH6828 is for the priestsH3548 who keepH8104 chargeH4931 of the altarH4196. TheseH1992 are the sonsH1121 of ZadokH6659, the only LevitesH1121H3878H413 who may approachH7131 the LORDH3068 to minister before HimH8334.”
The Inner Court
47Next he measuredH4058 the courtH2691. It was squareH7251, a hundredH3967 cubitsH520 longH753 and a hundredH3967 cubitsH520 wideH7341. And the altarH4196 was in frontH6440 of the templeH1004.
48Then he brought meH935 toH413 the porticoH197 of the templeH1004 and measuredH4058 the side pillarsH352 of the porticoH197 to be fiveH2568 cubitsH520 on eachH6311 sideH6311. The widthH7341 of the gateway wasH8179 fourteen cubits and its sidewalls were threeH7969 cubitsH520 on either sideH6311H7969H520.22 49The porticoH197 was twentyH6242 cubitsH520 wideH75323 and twelveH6249H6240 cubitsH520 deepH7341,24 and ten stepsH4609 led upH5927 to itH413.25 There were columnsH5982 byH413 the side pillarsH352, oneH259 on each sideH6311H259.
