Signs of the Coming Captivity
1Then the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 to meH413, sayingH559, 2“SonH1121 of manH120, youH859 are livingH3427 inH8432 a rebelliousH4805 houseH1004. They have eyesH5869 to seeH7200 but do notH3808 seeH7200, and earsH241 to hearH8085 but do notH3808 hearH8085, forH3588 theyH1992 are a rebelliousH4805 houseH1004.
3ThereforeH859, sonH1121 of manH120, packH6213 your bagsH3627 for exileH1473H1540. In broad daylightH3119H5869, set out from your placeH4725 and goH1540 toH413 anotherH312 as they watchH5869. PerhapsH194 they will understandH7200, thoughH3588 theyH1992 are a rebelliousH4805 houseH1004. 4Bring outH3318 your baggageH3627 for exileH1473 by dayH3119, as they watchH5869H859. Then in the eveningH6153, as they watchH5869, go outH3318 like those who goH4161 into exileH1473.
5As they watchH5869, digH2864 through the wallH7023 and carryH3318 your belongings out through it. 6And as they watchH5869, liftH5375 your bags toH5921 your shoulderH3802 and take them outH3318 at duskH5939; coverH3680 your faceH6440 so that you cannotH3808 seeH7200 the landH776. ForH3588 I have made youH5414 a signH4159 to the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478.”
7So I didH6213H3651 asH834 I was commandedH6680. I brought outH3318 my bagsH3627 for exileH1473 by dayH3119, and in the eveningH6153 I dugH2864 through the wallH7023 by handH3027. I took my belongings outH3318 at duskH5939, carrying themH5375 onH5921 my shoulderH3802 as they watchedH5869.
8And in the morningH1242 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 to meH413, sayingH559, 9“SonH1121 of manH120, hasn’tH3808 the rebelliousH4805 houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 askedH559 youH413, ‘WhatH4100 are youH859 doingH6213?’ 10TellH559 themH413 that this is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559: ‘ThisH2088 burdenH4853 concerns the princeH5387 in JerusalemH3389 and allH3605 the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 whoH834 areH1992 thereH8432.’
11You are to sayH559, ‘IH589 am a sign to youH4159.’ Just asH834 it happened hereH6213,1 soH3651 will it be doneH6213 to them; they will goH1980 into exileH1473 as captivesH7628. 12And at duskH5939 the princeH5387 among themH8432 will liftH5375 his bags toH413 his shoulderH3802 and go outH3318. They will digH2864 through the wallH7023 to bring him outH3318. He will coverH3680 his faceH6440 soH3282 heH1931 cannotH3808 seeH7200 the landH776. 13But I will spreadH6566 My netH7568 over himH5921, and he will be caughtH8610 in My snareH4686. I will bringH935 himH853 to BabylonH894, the landH776 of the ChaldeansH3778; yet he will notH3808 see itH7200, and thereH8033 he will dieH4191.
14And I will scatterH2219 to everyH3605 windH7307 allH3605 the attendantsH5828 around himH834H5439 and allH3605 his troopsH102, and I will drawH7324 a swordH2719 to chase after themH310. 15And they will knowH3045 thatH3588 IH589 am the LORDH3068, when I disperseH6327 themH853 among the nationsH1471 and scatterH2219 themH853 throughout the countriesH776.
16But I will spareH3498 a fewH4557 of themH582 from swordH2719 and famineH7458 and plagueH1698, so thatH4616 in the nationsH1471 to whichH834 they goH935, they can recountH5608 allH3605 their abominationsH8441H8033. Then they will knowH3045 thatH3588 IH589 am the LORDH3068.”
17Moreover, the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 to meH413, sayingH559, 18“SonH1121 of manH120, eatH398 your breadH3899 with tremblingH7494, and drinkH8354 your waterH4325 with quiveringH7269 and anxietyH1674. 19Then tellH559H413 the peopleH5971 of the landH776 that this is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559 about those livingH3427 in JerusalemH3389 and inH413 the landH127 of IsraelH3478: ‘They will eatH398 their breadH3899 with anxietyH1674 and drinkH8354 their waterH4325 in dreadH8078, forH4616 their landH776 will be strippedH3456 of everything in itH4393 because of the violenceH2555 of allH3605 who dwellH3427 in it. 20The inhabitedH3427 citiesH5892 will be laid wasteH2717, and the landH776 will becomeH1961 desolateH8077. Then you will knowH3045 thatH3588 IH589 am the LORDH3068.’”
The Presumptuous Proverb
21Again the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 to meH413, sayingH559, 22“SonH1121 of manH120, whatH4100 is thisH2088 proverbH4912 that you have inH5921 the landH127 of IsraelH3478:
23ThereforeH3651 tellH559 themH413 that this is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559: ‘I will put an endH7673 to thisH2088 proverbH4912, and in IsraelH3478 they will no longerH3808H5750 reciteH4911 itH853.’
ButH3588H518 sayH1696 to themH413: ‘The daysH3117 are at handH7126 when everyH3605 visionH2377 will be fulfilledH1697. 24ForH3588 there will beH1961 noH3808 moreH5750 falseH7723 visionsH2377 or flatteringH2509 divinationsH4738 withinH8432 the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, 25becauseH3588 IH589, the LORDH3068, will speakH1696 whateverH834 wordH1697 I speakH1696, and it will be fulfilledH6213 withoutH3808 delayH4900. ForH3588 in your daysH3117, O rebelliousH4805 houseH1004, I will speakH1696 a messageH1697 and bring it to passH6213, declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069.’”
26Furthermore, the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 to meH413, sayingH559, 27“SonH1121 of manH120, take noteH2009 that the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 is sayingH559, ‘The visionH2377 thatH834 heH1931 seesH2372 is for manyH7227 years from nowH3117; heH1931 prophesiesH5012 about the distantH7350 futureH6256.’
28ThereforeH3651 tellH559 themH413 that this is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559: ‘NoneH3808H3605 of My wordsH1697 will be delayedH4900 any longerH5750. The messageH1697 I speakH1696 will be fulfilledH6213, declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069.’”
Notes
- 1. Ezekiel 12:11 Literally ‘I am a sign to you.’ Just as I have done; some translators close the quotation at the end of the verse. ↩
