Ezekiel 16

Jerusalem’s Unfaithfulness
Again the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 to meH413, sayingH559, 2“SonH1121 of manH120, confrontH3045 JerusalemH3389 with herH853 abominationsH8441 3and tellH559 her that this is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559 to JerusalemH3389: Your originH4351 and your birthH4138 were in the landH776 of the CanaanitesH3669. Your fatherH1 was an AmoriteH567 and your motherH517 a HittiteH2850. 4On the dayH3117 of your birthH4138 your cordH8270 was notH3808 cutH3772, norH3808 were you washedH7364 with waterH4325 for cleansingH4935. You were notH3808 rubbed with saltH4414 or wrapped in clothsH2853H3808. 5NoH3808 one cared enoughH2347H5869 for youH5921 to doH6213 even oneH259 of these thingsH428 out of compassionH2550 for youH5921. Instead, you were thrown outH7993 intoH413 the openH6440 fieldH7704, because youH5315 were despisedH1604 on the dayH3117 of your birthH3205.
Then I passedH5674 byH5921 and sawH7200 you wallowingH947 in your bloodH1818, and as you lay there in your bloodH1818 I saidH559 to you, ‘LiveH2421!’ There I saidH559 to you, ‘LiveH2421!’ 7I madeH5414 you thriveH7233 like a plantH6780 of the fieldH7704. You grew upH7235 and maturedH1431 and becameH935H5716 very beautifulH5716. Your breastsH7699 were formedH3559 and your hairH8181 grewH6779, but youH859 were nakedH5903 and bareH6181.
Then I passedH5674 byH5921 and saw youH7200, and you were indeedH2009 old enoughH6256 for loveH1730. So I spreadH6566 My cloakH3671 over youH5921 and coveredH3680 your nakednessH6172. I pledged MyselfH7650 to you, enteredH935 into a covenantH1285 with youH854, and you becameH1961 Mine, declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069. 9Then I bathedH7364 you with waterH4325, rinsed offH7857 your bloodH1818H5921, and anointedH5480 you with oilH8081. 10I clothedH3847 you in embroidered clothH7553 and gave you sandalsH5274 of fine leatherH8476. I wrappedH2280 you in fine linenH8336 and coveredH3680 you with silkH4897. 11I adornedH5710 you with jewelryH5716, and I putH5414 braceletsH6781 onH5921 your wristsH3027 and a chainH7242 aroundH5921 your neckH1627. 12I putH5414 a ringH5141 inH5921 your noseH639, earringsH5694 onH5921 your earsH241, and a beautifulH8597 crownH5850 upon your headH7218.
So you were adornedH5710 with goldH2091 and silverH3701, and your clothingH4403 was made of fine linenH8336, silkH4897, and embroidered clothH7553. You ateH398 fine flourH5560, honeyH1706, and oilH8081. You became veryH3966 beautifulH3302 and rose to beH6743 queenH4410. 14Your fameH8034 spreadH3318 among the nationsH1471 on account of your beautyH3308, forH3588 itH1931 was perfectH3632 in the splendorH1926 I bestowedH7760 on youH5921, declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069.
But because ofH5921 your fameH8034, you trustedH982 in your beautyH3308 and played the harlotH2181. You lavishedH8210 your favorsH8457 onH5921 everyoneH3605 who passed byH5674, and your beauty was theirs for the askingH1961. 16You tookH3947 some of your garmentsH899 and madeH6213 colorfulH2921 high placesH1116 for yourself, and on themH5921 you prostituted yourselfH2181. Such things should notH3808 have happenedH935; never shouldH3808 they have occurredH1961!
You also tookH3947 the fineH8597 jewelryH3627 of goldH2091 and silverH3701 I had givenH5414 you, and you madeH6213 maleH2145 idolsH6754 with which to prostitute yourselfH2181. 18You tookH3947 your embroideredH7553 garmentsH899 to cover themH3680, and you setH5414 My oilH8081 and incenseH7004 before themH6440. 19And you setH5414 before themH6440 as a pleasingH5207 aromaH7381 the foodH3899 I had given youH5414—the fine flourH5560, oilH8081, and honeyH1706 that I had fed youH398. That is what happenedH1961, declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069.
You even tookH3947 the sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323 you boreH3205 to Me and sacrificedH2076 them as food to idolsH398. Was your prostitutionH8457 not enoughH4592? 21You slaughteredH7819 My childrenH1121 and delivered them upH5414 through the fireH5674 to idols.
AndH853 in allH3605 your abominationsH8441 and acts of prostitutionH8457, you did notH3808 rememberH2142 the daysH3117 of your youthH5271 when you wereH1961 nakedH5903 and bareH6181, wallowingH947 in your own bloodH1818H1961.
WoeH188! WoeH188 to you, declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069. AndH1961 in addition toH310 allH3605 your other wickednessH7451, 24you builtH1129 yourself a moundH1354 and madeH6213 yourself a lofty shrineH7413 in everyH3605 public squareH7339. 25AtH413 the headH7218 of everyH3605 streetH1870 you builtH1129 your lofty shrinesH7413 and degradedH8581 your beautyH3308. With increasingH7235 promiscuityH8457, you spreadH6589 your legsH7272 to allH3605 who passed byH5674. 26You prostituted yourselfH2181 withH413 your lustfulH1432H1320 neighborsH7934, the EgyptiansH4714, and increasedH7235 your promiscuityH8457 to provoke Me to angerH3707.
ThereforeH2009 I stretched outH5186 My handH3027 against youH5921 and reducedH1639 your portionH2706. I gave you overH5414 to the desireH5315 of those who hate youH8130, the daughtersH1323 of the PhilistinesH6430, who were ashamedH3637 of your lewdH2154 conductH1870. 28Then you prostituted yourselfH2181 withH413 the AssyriansH804H1121, because you were not yetH1115 satisfiedH7646. Even afterH2181 that, you were stillH1571 notH3808 satisfiedH7654. 29So you extendedH7235 your promiscuityH8457 toH413 ChaldeaH3778,1 the landH776 of merchantsH3667—but evenH1571 with thisH2063 you were notH3808 satisfiedH7646!
HowH4100 weak-willedH535 is your heartH3826,2 declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069, while you doH6213 allH3605 these thingsH428, the actsH4639 of a shamelessH7986H802 prostituteH2181! 31But when you builtH1129 your moundsH1354 at the headH7218 of everyH3605 streetH1870 and madeH6213 your lofty shrinesH7413 in everyH3605 public squareH7339, you wereH1961 not even likeH3808 a prostituteH2181, because you scornedH7046 paymentH868.
You adulterous wifeH5003H802! You receiveH3947 strangersH2114 instead ofH8478 your own husbandH376! 33Men giveH5414 giftsH5078 to allH3605 their prostitutesH2181, but youH859 gaveH5414 giftsH5083 to allH3605 your loversH157. You bribedH7809 themH853 to comeH935 to youH413 from everywhereH5439 for your illicit favorsH8457. 34So your prostitutionH8457 isH1961 the oppositeH2016 of thatH4480 of other womenH802: No oneH3808 solicitedH310 your favorsH2181, and you paidH5414 a feeH868 instead ofH3808 receivingH5414 oneH868; so you areH1961 the very oppositeH2016!
Judgment on Jerusalem
ThereforeH3651, O prostituteH2181, hearH8085 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068! 36This is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559: BecauseH3282 you poured outH8210 your wealthH5178 and exposedH1540 your nakednessH6172 in your promiscuityH8457 withH5921 your loversH157 and withH5921 allH3605 your detestableH8441 idolsH1544, and because of the bloodH1818 of your childrenH1121 whichH834 you gaveH5414 to them, 37thereforeH3651 I will surelyH2005 gatherH6908 allH3605 the loversH157 with whomH834 you found pleasureH6149, allH3605 thoseH834 you lovedH157 and allH3605 thoseH834 you hatedH8130. I will gatherH6908 themH853 against youH5921 from all aroundH5439 and exposeH1540 you before themH413, and they will see youH7200 completelyH3605 nakedH6172. 38And I will sentence youH8199 to the punishmentH4941 of women who commit adulteryH5003 and those who shedH8210 bloodH1818; so I will bring upon youH5414 the wrathH2534 of your bloodshedH1818 and jealousyH7068.
Then I will deliverH5414 youH853 into the handsH3027 of your lovers, and they will levelH2040 your moundsH1354 and tear downH5422 your lofty shrinesH7413. They will strip offH6584 your clothesH899, takeH3947 your fineH8597 jewelryH3627, and leave youH5117 nakedH5903 and bareH6181. 40They will bringH5927 a mobH6951 against youH5921, who will stoneH7275 youH853H68 and cut you to piecesH1333 with their swordsH2719. 41Then they will burn downH8313H784 your housesH1004 and executeH6213 judgmentH8201 against you in the sightH5869 of manyH7227 womenH802.
I will put an endH7673 to your prostitutionH2181, and you will neverH3808H5750 againH1571 payH5414 your loversH868. 42So I will lay to restH5117 My wrathH2534 against you, and My jealousyH7068 will turn awayH5493 from youH4480. Then I will be calmH8252 and noH3808 longerH5750 angryH3707.
BecauseH3282 you did notH3808 rememberH2142 the daysH3117 of your youthH5271, but enragedH7264 Me with allH3605 theseH428 thingsH589H1887, I will surelyH1571 bring your deedsH1870 downH5414 upon your own headH7218, declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069. Have you notH3808 committedH6213 this lewdnessH2154 on topH5921 of allH3605 your other abominationsH8441?
BeholdH2009, allH3605 who speak in proverbsH4911 will quote this proverbH4911H559 about youH5921:
YouH859 are the daughterH1323 of your motherH517, who despisedH1602 her husbandH376 and childrenH1121. YouH859 are the sisterH269 of your sistersH269, whoH834 despisedH1602 their husbandsH582 and childrenH1121. Your motherH517 was a HittiteH2850 and your fatherH1 an AmoriteH567. 46Your olderH1419 sisterH269 was SamariaH8111, whoH1931 livedH3427 with her daughtersH1323 toH5921 your northH8040; and your youngerH6996 sisterH269 was SodomH5467, who livedH3427 with her daughtersH1323 toH4480 your southH3225. 47And you not onlyH3808 walkedH1980 in their waysH1870 and practicedH6213 their abominationsH8441, but soon you wereH4592H6985 more depraved than they wereH7843.
As surely as IH589 liveH2416, declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069, your sisterH269H1931 SodomH5467 and her daughtersH1323 neverH518 didH6213 asH834 youH859 and your daughtersH1323 have doneH6213. 49NowH2009 thisH2088 wasH1961 the iniquityH5771 of your sisterH269 SodomH5467: She and her daughtersH1323H3027 wereH1961 arrogantH1347, overfedH7653H3899, and complacentH8252H7962; they did notH3808 helpH2388 the poorH6041 and needyH34. 50Thus they were haughtyH1361 and committedH6213 abominationsH8441 before MeH6440. Therefore I removedH5493 themH853, asH834 you have seenH7200.3
Furthermore, SamariaH8111 did notH3808 commitH2398 halfH2677 the sins you didH2403. You have multipliedH7235 your abominationsH8441 beyond theirs, and allH3605 the abominationsH8441 you have committedH6213 have made your sistersH269 appear righteousH6663. 52So nowH1571 youH859 must bearH5375 your disgraceH3639, sinceH834 you have brought justificationH6419 for your sistersH269. For they appear more righteousH6663 than youH4480, because your sinsH2403 were more vileH8581 than theirs. So youH859 tooH1571 must bearH5375 your shameH954 and disgraceH3639, since you have made your sistersH269 appear righteousH6663.
But I will restoreH7725 SodomH5467 and her daughtersH1323 from captivityH7622,4 as well asH7622 SamariaH8111 and her daughtersH1323. And I will restore youH7622 along with themH8432. 54SoH4616 you will bearH5375 your disgraceH3639 and be ashamedH3637 of allH3605 you didH6213 to comfort themH5162.
And your sistersH269, SodomH5467 with her daughtersH1323 and SamariaH8111 with her daughtersH1323, will returnH7725 to their former stateH6927. YouH859 and your daughtersH1323H7725H6927 will also returnH7725 to your former stateH6927. 56Did you notH3808 treatH1961H6310 your sisterH269 SodomH5467 as an object of scornH8052 in the dayH3117 of your prideH1347, 57beforeH2962 your wickednessH7451 was uncoveredH1540? Even soH3644, you are nowH6256 scornedH2781 by the daughtersH1323 of EdomH7585 and allH3605 those around herH5439, and by the daughtersH1323 of the PhilistinesH6430—all those around youH5439 who despiseH7590 youH853. 58YouH859 will bear the consequencesH5375 of your lewdnessH2154 andH853 your abominationsH8441, declaresH5002 the LORDH3068.
The Covenant Remembered
ForH3588 this is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559: I will dealH6213 with youH854 according toH834 your deedsH6213, sinceH834 you have despisedH959 the oathH423 by breakingH6565 the covenantH1285. 60But IH589 will rememberH2142 the covenantH1285 I made with youH854 in the daysH3117 of your youthH5271, and I will establishH6965 an everlasting covenantH5769 with you. 61Then you will rememberH2142 your waysH1870 and be ashamedH3637 when you receiveH3947 your olderH1419 andH413 youngerH6996H4480 sistersH269. I will giveH5414 themH853 to you as daughtersH1323, but not because ofH3808 My covenant with youH1285.
So IH589 will establishH6965 My covenantH1285 with youH854, and you will knowH3045 thatH3588 IH589 am the LORDH3068, 63so thatH4616 when I make atonementH3722 forH3605 allH834 you have doneH6213, you will rememberH2142 and be ashamedH954 and neverH3808H1961 againH5750 openH6610 your mouthH6310 because ofH6440 your disgraceH3639, declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069.”
