A Prophecy against Israel’s Shepherds
1Then the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 to meH413, sayingH559, 2“SonH1121 of manH120, prophesyH5012 againstH5921 the shepherdsH7462 of IsraelH3478. ProphesyH5012 and tellH559 them that this is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559: ‘WoeH1945 to the shepherdsH7462 of IsraelH3478, whoH834 only feedH1961H7462 themselvesH853! Should notH3808 the shepherdsH7462 feedH7462 their flockH6629? 3You eatH398 the fatH2459, wearH3847 the woolH6785, and butcherH2076 the fattened sheepH1277, but you do notH3808 feedH7462 the flockH6629.
You have notH3808 strengthenedH2388 the weakH2470, healedH7495 the sickH2470H3808, bound upH2280 the injuredH7665H3808, brought backH7725 the straysH5080H3808, or searched forH1245 the lostH6. InsteadH3808, you have ruledH7287 themH853 with violenceH2394 and crueltyH6531. 5They were scatteredH6327 for lack ofH1097 a shepherdH7462, and when they were scatteredH6327 they becameH1961 foodH402 for allH3605 the wildH7704 beastsH2416. 6My flockH6629 went astrayH7686 on allH3605 the mountainsH2022 andH5921 everyH3605 highH7311H5921 hillH1389. They were scatteredH6327H6629 over the faceH6440 of allH3605 the earthH776, with no oneH369 to searchH1875 for them orH369 seek them outH1245.’
7ThereforeH3651, you shepherdsH7462, hearH8085 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068: 8‘As surely as IH589H518 liveH2416, declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069, becauseH3282 My flockH6629 lacksH369 a shepherdH7462 and has becomeH1961 preyH957H1961 and foodH402 for everyH3605 wildH7704 beastH2416, and because My shepherdsH7462 did notH3808 searchH1875 for My flockH6629 but fedH7462 themselvesH853 instead, 9thereforeH3651, you shepherdsH7462, hearH8085 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068!’
10This is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559: ‘BeholdH2005, I am againstH413 the shepherdsH7462, and I will demandH1875 from themH3027 My flockH6629 and remove themH7673 from tendingH7462 the flockH6629, so that they can noH3808 longerH5750 feedH7462 themselvesH853. For I will deliverH5337 My flockH6629 from their mouthsH6310, and it will no longerH3808 beH1961 foodH402 for them.’
The Good Shepherd
(Psalm 23:1–6; John 10:1–21)
11ForH3588 this is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559: ‘BeholdH2005, I MyselfH589 will search forH1875 My flockH6629 and seek them outH1239. 12As a shepherdH7462 looks forH1243 his scatteredH6567 sheepH5739 whenH3117 he isH1961 amongH8432 the flockH6629, soH3651 I will look forH1239 My flockH6629.
I will rescue themH5337 fromH853 allH3605 the placesH4725 to whichH834 they were scatteredH6327H8033 on a dayH3117 of cloudsH6051 and darknessH6205. 13I will bring them outH3318 fromH4480 the peoplesH5971, gather themH6908 fromH4480 the countriesH776, and bring themH935 intoH413 their own landH127. I will feed themH7462 onH413 the mountainsH2022 of IsraelH3478, in the ravinesH650, and in allH3605 the settlementsH4186 of the landH776. 14I will feedH7462 themH853 in goodH2896 pastureH4829, and the loftyH4791 mountainsH2022 of IsraelH3478 will beH1961 their grazing landH5116. ThereH8033 they will lie downH7257 in a goodH2896 grazing landH5116; they will feedH7462 in richH8082 pastureH4829 onH413 the mountainsH2022 of IsraelH3478.
15IH589 will tendH7462 My flockH6629H589 and make them lie downH7257, declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069. 16I will seekH1245 the lostH6, bring backH7725 the straysH5080, bind upH2280 the brokenH7665, and strengthenH2388 the weakH2470; but the sleekH8082 and strongH2389 I will destroyH8045. I will shepherd themH7462 with justiceH4941.’
17This is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069H2005 saysH559 to youH859, My flockH6629: ‘I will judgeH8199 betweenH996 one sheepH7716 and anotherH7716, between the ramsH352 and the goatsH6260. 18Is it not enoughH4592 for you to feed onH7462 the goodH2896 pastureH4829? Must you also trampleH7429 the restH3499 of the pastureH4829 with your feetH7272? Is it not enough for you to drinkH8354 the clearH4950 watersH4325? Must you also muddyH7515 the restH3498 with your feetH7272? 19Why must My flockH6629 feed onH7462 what your feetH7272 have trampledH4823, and drinkH8354 what your feetH7272 have muddiedH4833?’
20ThereforeH3651 this is whatH3541 the LordH136 GODH3069 saysH559 to themH413: ‘BeholdH2005, I MyselfH589 will judgeH8199 betweenH996 the fatH1274 sheepH7716 andH996 the leanH7330 sheepH7716. 21SinceH3282 you shoveH1920 with flankH6654 and shoulderH3802, buttingH5055 allH3605 the weak onesH2470 with your hornsH7161 untilH5704 you have scatteredH6327 themH853 abroadH2351, 22I will saveH3467 My flockH6629, and they will noH3808 longerH5750 beH1961 preyH957. I will judgeH8199 betweenH996 one sheepH7716 and anotherH7716. 23I will appointH6965 over themH5921 oneH259 shepherdH7462, My servantH5650 DavidH1732, and he will feedH7462 themH853. HeH1931 will feedH7462 themH853 andH1931 beH1961 their shepherdH7462. 24IH589, the LORDH3068, will beH1961 their GodH430, and My servantH5650 DavidH1732 will be a princeH5387 among themH8432. IH589, the LORDH3068, have spokenH1696.
The Covenant of Peace
25I will makeH3772 with them a covenantH1285 of peaceH7965 and ridH7673 the landH776 ofH4480 wildH7451 animalsH2416, so that they may dwellH3427 securelyH983 in the wildernessH4057 and sleepH3462 in the forestH3293. 26I will makeH5414 themH853 and the places aroundH5439 My hillH1389 a blessingH1293. I will send downH3381 showersH1653 in seasonH6256—showersH1653 of blessingH1293H1961. 27The treesH6086 of the fieldH7704 will giveH5414 their fruitH6529, and the landH776 will yieldH5414 its produceH2981; My flock will beH1961 secureH983 inH5921 their landH127. Then they will knowH3045 thatH3588 IH589 am the LORDH3068, when I have brokenH7665 the barsH4133 of their yokeH5923 and delivered themH5337 from the handsH3027 that enslavedH5647 them.
28They will noH3808 longerH5750 beH1961 preyH957 for the nationsH1471, and the beastsH2416 of the earthH776 will notH3808 consume themH398. They will dwell securelyH3427H983, and noH369 one will frighten themH2729.
29And I will raise upH6965 for them a gardenH4302 of renownH8034, and they will noH3808 longerH5750 beH1961 victimsH622 of famineH7458 in the landH776 or bearH5375 the scornH3639 of the nationsH1471. 30Then they will knowH3045 thatH3588 IH589, the LORDH3068 their GodH430, am with themH854, and that theyH1992, the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478, are My peopleH5971,’ declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069.
31‘YouH859 are My flockH6629, the sheepH6629 of My pastureH4830, My peopleH120H859, and IH589 am your GodH430,’ declaresH5002 the LordH136 GODH3069.”
