Genesis 38:13-30
13And it was toldH5046 TamarH8559, sayingH559, Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to TimnahH8553 to shearH1494 his sheepH6629. 14And she putH5414 off from her the garmentsH899 of her widowhoodH491, and coveredH3680 herself with her veilH6809, and wrapped herself, and satH3427 in the gate of Enaim, which is by the wayH1870 to TimnahH8553; for she sawH7200 that ShelahH7956 was grownH1431 up, and she was not givenH5414 unto him to wifeH802. 15When JudahH3063 sawH7200 her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she had coveredH3680 her faceH6440. 16And he turnedH5186 unto her by the wayH1870, and saidH559, ComeH935, I pray thee, let me comeH935 in unto thee: for he knewH3045 not that she was his daughter-in-law. And she saidH559, What wilt thou giveH5414 me, that thou mayest comeH935 in unto me? 17And he saidH559, I will sendH7971 thee a kid of the goatsH5795 from the flockH6629. And she saidH559, Wilt thou giveH5414 me a pledgeH6162, till thou sendH7971 it? 18And he saidH559, What pledgeH6162 shall I giveH5414 thee? And she saidH559, Thy signet and thy cordH6616, and thy staffH4294 that is in thy handH3027. And he gaveH5414 them to her, and cameH935 in unto her, and she conceivedH2029 by him. 19And she aroseH6965, and went awayH5493, and putH3847 off her veilH6809 from her, and putH3847 on the garmentsH899 of her widowhoodH491. 20And JudahH3063 sentH7971 the kid of the goatsH5795 by the handH3027 of his friendH7453 the AdullamiteH5726, to receiveH3947 the pledgeH6162 from the woman’sH802 handH3027: but he foundH4672 her not. 21Then he askedH7592 the menH376 of her placeH4725, sayingH559, WhereH346 is the prostitute, that wasH1961 at Enaim by the wayside? And they saidH559, There hath beenH1961 no prostitute hereH2088. 22And he returnedH7725 to JudahH3063, and saidH559, I have not foundH4672 her; and alsoH1571 the menH376 of the placeH4725 saidH559, There hath beenH1961 no prostitute hereH2088. 23And JudahH3063 saidH559, Let her takeH3947 it to her, lestH6435 we beH1961 put to shame: behold, I sentH7971 this kid, and thou hast not foundH4672 her.
24And it came to pass about threeH7969 monthsH2320 after, that it wasH1961 toldH5046 JudahH3063, sayingH559, TamarH8559 thy daughter-in-law hath playedH2181 the harlot; and moreover, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And JudahH3063 saidH559, BringH3318 her forthH3318, and let her beH1961 burnt. 25WhenH834 she was broughtH3318 forthH3318, she sentH7971 to her father-in-law, sayingH559, By the manH376, whose these are, am I with child: and she saidH559, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and the cordsH6616, and the staffH4294. 26And JudahH3063 acknowledged them, and saidH559, She is moreH4480 righteousH6663 than I, forasmuch as I gaveH5414 her not to ShelahH7956 my sonH1121. And he knewH3045 her againH5750 no moreH4480. 27And it came to pass in the timeH6256 of her travail, that, behold, twinsH8380 wereH1961 in her wombH990. 28And it came to pass, when she travailed, that oneH2088 putH5414 out a handH3027: and the midwife tookH3947 and boundH7194 upon his handH3027 a scarletH8144 thread, sayingH559, This came out firstH7223. 29And it came to pass, as he drew backH7725 his handH3027, that, behold, his brotherH251 came out: and she saidH559, Wherefore hast thou made a breachH6556 for thyself? therefore his nameH8034 was calledH7121 PerezH6557. 30And afterward cameH3318 out his brotherH251, that had the scarletH8144 thread upon his handH3027: and his nameH8034 was calledH7121 ZerahH2226.
