1 Samuel 2

1And HannahH2584 prayedH6419, and saidH559:

My heartH3820 exulteth in Jehovah; My hornH7161 is exaltedH7311 in Jehovah; My mouthH6310 is enlargedH7337 over mine enemiesH341;Because I rejoiceH8055 in thy salvationH3444.2There is none holyH6918 as Jehovah; For there is none besides thee,Neither is there any rockH6697 like our GodH430.3Talk no more so exceeding proudly;Let not arrogancy comeH3318 out of your mouthH6310;For Jehovah is a GodH410 of knowledgeH1844,And by him actions are weighedH8505.4The bowsH7198 of the mightyH1368 menH1368 are broken; And they that stumbledH3782 are girdedH247 with strengthH2428.5They that were full have hiredH7936 out themselves for breadH3899;And they that were hungryH7457 have ceasedH2308to hunger:Yea, the barrenH6135 hath borneH3205 sevenH7651;And she that hath manyH7227 children languisheth.6Jehovah killeth, and maketh aliveH2421:He bringeth downH3381 to SheolH7585, and bringeth up.7Jehovah maketh poor, and maketh richH6238:He bringeth lowH8213, he alsoH637 lifteth up.8He raiseth up the poor out of the dustH6083,He lifteth up the needyH34 from the dunghill,To makeH7896 them sitH3427 with princes,And inheritH5157 the throneH3678 of gloryH3519:For the pillars of the earthH776 are Jehovah’s,And he hath setH6965 the worldH8398 upon them.9He will keepH8104 the feetH7272 of his holy onesH2623;But the wickedH7563 shall be put to silence in darknessH2822;For by strengthH3581 shall no manH376 prevailH1396.10They that strive with Jehovah shall be broken to pieces;Against them will he thunderH7481 in heavenH8064:Jehovah will judgeH1777 the endsH657 of the earthH776;And he will giveH5414 strengthH5797 unto his kingH4428,And exaltH7311 the hornH7161 of his anointedH4899.

11And ElkanahH511 went to RamahH7414 to his houseH1004. And the child did minister unto Jehovah before EliH5941 the priestH3548.

12Now the sonsH1121 of EliH5941 were base men; they knewH3045 not Jehovah. 13And the customH4941 of the priestsH3548 with the peopleH5971 was, that, when any manH376 offeredH2076 sacrificeH2077, the priest’sH3548 servantH5288 cameH935, while the fleshH1320 was boilingH1310, with a flesh-hook of threeH7969 teethH8127 in his handH3027; 14and he struckH5221 it into the pan, or kettle, or caldronH7037, or potH6517; all that the flesh-hook broughtH935 up the priestH3548 tookH3947 therewith. So they did in ShilohH7887 unto all the Israelites that cameH935 thither. 15Yea, before they burnt the fatH2459, the priest’sH3548 servantH5288 cameH935, and saidH559 to the manH376 that sacrificedH2076, GiveH5414 fleshH1320 to roast for the priestH3548; for he will not have boiledH1310 fleshH1320 of thee, but raw. 16And if the manH376 saidH559 unto him, They will surely burn the fatH2459 first, and then takeH3947 as much as thy soulH5315 desireth; then he would sayH559, Nay, but thou shalt giveH5414 it me nowH6258: and if not, I will takeH3947 it by forceH2394. 17And the sinH2403 of the youngH5288 menH376 wasH1961 veryH3966 greatH1419 before Jehovah; for the menH376 despised the offeringH4503 of Jehovah.

18But SamuelH8050 ministered before Jehovah, being a child, girdedH2296 with a linenH906 ephodH646. 19Moreover his motherH517 madeH6213 him a littleH6996 robeH4598, and broughtH5927 it to him from year to year, when she cameH5927 up with her husbandH376 to offerH5927 the yearly sacrificeH2077. 20And EliH5941 blessedH1288 ElkanahH511 and his wifeH802, and saidH559, Jehovah give thee seedH2233 of this womanH802 for the petitionH7596 which was askedH7592 of Jehovah. And they wentH1980 unto their own home. 21And Jehovah visitedH6485 HannahH2584, and she conceivedH2029, and bare threeH7969 sonsH1121 and twoH8147 daughtersH1323. And the child SamuelH8050 grewH1431 before Jehovah.

22Now EliH5941 was veryH3966 old; and he heardH8085 all that his sonsH1121 did unto all IsraelH3478, and how that they layH7901 with the womenH802 that did service at the doorH6607 of the tentH168 of meetingH4150. 23And he saidH559 unto them, WhyH4100 do ye such thingsH1697? for I hearH8085 of your evilH7451 dealings from all this peopleH5971. 24Nay, my sonsH1121; for it is no goodH2896 reportH8052 that I hearH8085: ye makeH8085 Jehovah’s peopleH5971 to transgressH5674. 25If oneH376 manH376 sinH2398 against another, GodH430 shall judge him; but if a manH376 sinH2398 against Jehovah, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding, they hearkened not unto the voiceH6963 of their fatherH1, because Jehovah was minded to slay them. 26And the child SamuelH8050 grew on, and increased in favor both with Jehovah, and alsoH1571 with menH376.

27And there cameH935 a manH376 of GodH430 unto EliH5941, and saidH559 unto him, ThusH3541 saith Jehovah, Did I revealH1540 myself unto the houseH1004 of thy fatherH1, when they wereH1961 in EgyptH4714 in bondage to Pharaoh’sH6547 houseH1004? 28and did I chooseH977 him out of all the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 to be my priestH3548, to goH5927 up unto mine altarH4196, to burn incenseH7004, to wear an ephodH646 before me? and did I giveH5414 unto the houseH1004 of thy fatherH1 all the offeringsH801 of the children of IsraelH3478 madeH5414 by fireH801? 29Wherefore kick ye at my sacrificeH2077 and at mine offeringH4503, which I have commandedH6680 in my habitationH4583, and honorest thy sonsH1121 above me, to makeH3513 yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offeringsH4503 of IsraelH3478 my peopleH5971? 30ThereforeH3651 Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, saith, I saidH559 indeed that thy houseH1004, and the houseH1004 of thy fatherH1, should walkH1980 before me for everH5769: but nowH6258 Jehovah saith, Be it far from me; for them that honorH3513 me I will honorH3513, and they that despiseH959 me shall be lightly esteemed. 31Behold, the daysH3117 comeH935, that I will cutH1438 off thine armH2220, and the armH2220 of thy father’sH1 houseH1004, that there shall not beH1961 an oldH2205 manH2205 in thy houseH1004. 32And thou shalt behold the affliction of my habitationH4583, in all the wealth which God shall give IsraelH3478; and there shall not beH1961 an oldH2205 manH2205 in thy houseH1004 for ever. 33And the manH376 of thine, whom I shall not cutH3772 off from mine altarH4196, shall be to consume thine eyesH5869, and to grieve thy heart; and all the increase of thy houseH1004 shall dieH4191 in the flower of their age. 34And this shall be the signH226 unto thee, that shall comeH935 upon thy twoH8147 sonsH1121, on HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372: in oneH259 dayH3117 they shall dieH4191 both of them. 35And I will raiseH6965 me up a faithfulH539 priestH3548, that shall do according to that which is in my heartH3824 and in my mind: and I will buildH1129 him a sure houseH1004; and he shall walkH1980 before mine anointedH4899 for ever. 36And it shall comeH935 to pass, that every oneH259 that is leftH3498 in thy houseH1004 shall comeH935 and bowH7812 downH7812 to him for a pieceH6595 of silverH3701 and a loafH3603 of breadH3899, and shall sayH559, Put me, I pray thee, into oneH259 of the priests’ offices, that I may eatH398 a morselH6595 of breadH3899.
