1 Samuel 22
1DavidH1732 therefore departed thence, and escapedH4422 to the caveH4631 of AdullamH5725: and when his brethren and all his father’sH1 houseH1004 heardH8085 it, they wentH3381 downH3381 thither to him. 2And every oneH376 that wasH1961 in distressH4689, and every oneH376 that wasH1961 in debt, and every oneH376 that wasH1961 discontented, gatheredH6908 themselves unto him; and he becameH1961 captain over them: and there were with him about fourH702 hundredH3967 menH376.
3And DavidH1732 wentH3318 thence to Mizpeh of MoabH4124: and he saidH559 unto the kingH4428 of MoabH4124, Let my fatherH1 and my motherH517, I pray thee, comeH3318 forthH3318, and be with you, till I knowH3045 what GodH430 will do for me. 4And he brought them before the kingH4428 of MoabH4124: and they dweltH3427 with him all the while that DavidH1732 wasH1961 in the stronghold. 5And the prophetH5030 GadH1410 saidH559 unto DavidH1732, Abide not in the stronghold; depart, and get thee into the landH776 of JudahH3063. Then DavidH1732 departed, and cameH935 into the forestH3293 of Hereth.
6And SaulH7586 heardH8085 that DavidH1732 was discovered, and the menH376 that were with him: now SaulH7586 was sittingH3427 in GibeahH1390, under the tamarisk-tree in Ramah, with his spearH2595 in his handH3027, and all his servantsH5650 were standingH5324 about him. 7And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto his servantsH5650 that stoodH5324 about him, HearH8085 now, ye Benjamites; will the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 giveH5414 every one of you fieldsH7704 and vineyardsH3754, will he makeH7760 you all captains of thousandsH505 and captains of hundredsH3967, 8that all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that discloseth to me when my sonH1121 maketh a league with the sonH1121 of JesseH3448, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or discloseth unto me that my sonH1121 hath stirred up my servantH5650 against me, to lieH693 in waitH693, as at this dayH3117? 9Then answered DoegH1673 the EdomiteH130, who stoodH5324 by the servantsH5650 of SaulH7586, and saidH559, I sawH7200 the sonH1121 of JesseH3448 comingH935 to NobH5011, to AhimelechH288 the sonH1121 of AhitubH285. 10And he inquired of Jehovah for him, and gaveH5414 him victuals, and gaveH5414 him the swordH2719 of GoliathH1555 the PhilistineH6430.
11Then the kingH4428 sentH7971 to callH7121 AhimelechH288 the priestH3548, the sonH1121 of AhitubH285, and all his father’sH1 houseH1004, the priestsH3548 that were in NobH5011: and they cameH935 all of them to the kingH4428. 12And SaulH7586 saidH559, HearH8085 now, thou sonH1121 of AhitubH285. And he answered, HereH2005 I am, my lordH113. 13And SaulH7586 saidH559 unto him, WhyH4100 have ye conspired against me, thou and the sonH1121 of JesseH3448, in that thou hast givenH5414 him breadH3899, and a swordH2719, and hast inquired of GodH430 for him, that he should riseH6965 against me, to lieH693 in waitH693, as at this dayH3117? 14Then AhimelechH288 answered the kingH4428, and saidH559, And who among all thy servantsH5650 is so faithfulH539 as DavidH1732, who is the king’sH4428 son-in-law, and is taken into thy council, and is honorable in thy houseH1004? 15Have I to-day begunH2490 to inquire of GodH430 for him? be it farH2486 from me: let not the kingH4428 impute anything unto his servantH5650, nor to all the houseH1004 of my fatherH1; for thy servantH5650 knoweth nothing of all this, less or more. 16And the kingH4428 saidH559, Thou shalt surely dieH4191, AhimelechH288, thou, and all thy father’sH1 houseH1004. 17And the kingH4428 saidH559 unto the guard that stoodH5324 about him, TurnH5437, and slay the priestsH3548 of Jehovah; because their handH3027 alsoH1571 is with DavidH1732, and because they knewH3045 that he fledH1272, and did not disclose it to me. But the servantsH5650 of the kingH4428 wouldH14 not putH4191 forthH7971 their handH3027 to fallH6293 upon the priestsH3548 of Jehovah. 18And the kingH4428 saidH559 to DoegH1673, TurnH5437 thou, and fallH6293 upon the priestsH3548. And DoegH1673 the EdomiteH130 turnedH5437, and he fellH6293 upon the priestsH3548, and he slew on that dayH3117 fourscore and fiveH2568 personsH376 that did wear a linenH906 ephodH646. 19And NobH5011, the cityH5892 of the priestsH3548, smote he with the edge of the swordH2719, both menH376 and womenH802, childrenH5768 and sucklings, and oxen and asses and sheepH7716, with the edge of the swordH2719.
20And oneH259 of the sonsH1121 of AhimelechH288, the sonH1121 of AhitubH285, namedH8034 AbiatharH54, escapedH4422, and fledH1272 after DavidH1732. 21And AbiatharH54 toldH5046 DavidH1732 that SaulH7586 had slainH2026 Jehovah’s priestsH3548. 22And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto AbiatharH54, I knewH3045 on that dayH3117, when DoegH1673 the EdomiteH130 was there, that he would surely tellH5046 SaulH7586: I have occasioned the death of all the personsH5315 of thy father’sH1 houseH1004. 23Abide thou with me, fearH3372 not; for he that seeketh my lifeH5315 seeketh thy lifeH5315: for with me thou shalt be in safeguard.
